It would have eliminated Mexico from the World Cup. Enough said.

Yeah - was at least nice to see him get on the score sheet if we had to fuck it up.

The general sentiment coming out of Mexico toward 'El Tri' is basically "Why can't you have balls and heart like the Americans?" #Priceless

Mexico Spanish Language broadcast of the games speaks in English when the USA scores:

"We love you! We love you forever and ever! God Bless America!"

Is it just me or did Panama look like they had half stopped playing as well, maybe expecting us to lay down?

I'm still pissed about this. 4 years of Mexico schadenfreude is worth its weight in gold.

Meh, as much amusement as I'd get out of Mexico not qualifying...play to win.

This is the equivalent of throwing games to get a better draft pick, something I also find obnoxious.

Not with 3 minutes left it's not.

If it was a whole game sure...but 3 minutes...give me a break.

US fielded a bunch of fringe WC roster players, looking to make their mark. You really expect them to lay down, *ever*? Fuck that.

It's fun to masturbate to but the thought that players wearing the US uniform would ever lay down just to screw over a rival is patently ridiculous.

"Laying down" - sure. I agree. Don't want them to lay down for a whole match, or hell...even a half.

But they actually upped their attacking intensity with 5-10 minutes left in the game instead of just putting it on cruise control, that's where I have issues. There was zero need for that.

You are talking about guys trying to impress Klinsman. Here is the thing, I know Mexico probably would have laid down. I'm happier we didn't. Why go to their level? Seriously. When Costa Rica comes here next time, do we pull the same garbage they did with us? No, there is no need.

You compete to win. Good on the kids they did that.

I agree, as much as Mexico would have run out the clock if roles were exchanged, the lift from that kind of win is amazing. Remember not that long ago, when we went on the road and a draw was a good match? Remember when we couldn't win on the road at all? This is what the USA should be playing like. Our expectations for the team need to be raised if we are going to compete on the worlds stage. A win like this is just what we need going forward.

First off, good of the US to play it out, and not play down for the sake of putting out a rival. Always play to win.

Second, I wish the World Cup started this weekend (or the weekend after the into-regional playoffs and second place games, etc.). It always feels like a bowl game break between the end of qualifying and the start of the World Cup. Any momentum gained during qualifying is utterly lost over 8 months, and the team can look and feel completely different by the time it gets to Brazil.

A friend of mine on another board posted a rough translation of the Spanish announcers:

I'm taking the opposite view of DT... the amount of self-recrimination and actual HATRED between the nation and their national team is the best possible thing ever. If we had played down and eliminated them, they would have focused on that instead.

Basically, it's the movie ending where at the last second, the hero doesn't shoot the bad guy and say "No. Killing you would be too easy. I want you to know that every breath you take from now on, is because I'm better than you ever could be." and leave that like a knife twisting in the bad guy's guts.
"Know this.

GOAL BY UNITED STATES! WE LOVE YOU! WE LOVE YOU FOREVER AND EVER!

GOD BLESS AMERICA! UNITED STATES! YOU PUT US IN THE PLAYOFF!

THOSE OF YOU IN GREEN DID NOT! THEY DID! YOU DIDN'T! THEY GAVE THEIR WHOLE LIVES! YOU PEOPLE DON'T DO ANYTHING FOR THE JERSEY! YOU GUYS DIDN'T GIVE YOUR LIFE FOR THE TEAM! YOU DID NOT GET US INTO THE WORLD CUP! YOU DID NOT KEEP US ALIVE! IT WAS UNITED STATES, NOT YOU! NOT YOU AND YOUR PRIDE! NOT YOU AND YOUR HISTORY! NOT YOU AND YOUR THUNDER!

This is a failure... and apart from that it was deserved, you had control of being in the playoff.... United States, with many substitute players, remember that, with lots of substitute players went to Panama, was dignified, the United States showed they understand this sport, while the Mexican team is shitty, horrible, terrible, a failure -

GOAL! GOAL UNITED STATES! WE ARE IN THE PLAYOFF!

UNITED STATES! SO THAT WE STAY MEXICAN! SO THAT WE SAY..

UNITED STATES HAVE PASSED US! UNITED STATES ARE BETTER THAN US AT SOCCER! UNITED STATES AND THEIR SUBSTITUTE TEAM HAVE KEPT US ALIVE!

HOPEFULLY VUCETICH... PUTS ON HIS PANTS AND RESIGNS TODAY! HE IS FAILING AS WELL A HEAD COACH! HE ISN'T WORKING AS A HEAD COACH!

WE NEED SOMEONE WITH PANTS WHO ROUSES THE EUROPEAN PLAYERS AND GETS THEM TO COME OUT WHEN SELECTED! THE EUROPEAN PLAYERS DO NOT EXIST ON THIS TEAM AT THIS MOMENT!

Wow, it does feel good to hear that after all the years of shit that we have had to deal with. I realize it's in the moment, but damn if those boys should deserve it and revel in every bit of it regardless.

The Moratti family has sold off 70% of Inter Milan to an Indonesian group headed by Erick Thohir. Thorhir also co-owns DC United and is part of the group that took over the 76ers.

It will be interesting to see if they continue to share San Siro with AC Milan, or if they build their own stadium.

I won't be shedding a whole lot of tears if they lose, but as much as I hate the Mexican arrogance and love beating them, it's better for us if they make it and do well at the WC. There's always a chance next cycle we could be the nation needing that extra .5 qualifying spot CONCACAF is tenuously holding on to.

CONCACAF being put with Asia doesn't help us at all. Pots A&D are pretty brutal. Hope to avoid Chile from C and Netherlands from D. Group A my initial reaction is hope for Switzerland/Belgium/Colombia, but those aren't exactly easy teams. Or hope a really weak team sneaks through into a remaining spot and we draw them.
