Yeah, she'd probably be pretty hot without the bruise. The media uses mugshot photos for two reasons: One, they are the easiest to get. Two, the police are quick to get them out because it makes the person look guilty. Her lawyer will be quick to get out more flattering photos (if he/she is worth anything), but the media often acts in the best interest in the prosecution on these cases (because they milk that relationship for info), so mug shots will continue to be the most often used photos. |

Just to keep it moving along:
hxxp://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-pflannigan29mar29,0,1121516,print.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines Teacher accused of having sex with student is on house arrest until trial A former music teacher facing life in prison for allegedly having sex with a student, beginning when the child was 11, can leave jail and return to house arrest while awaiting trial. Since late February, Carol Flannigan, 50, has been in the Palm Beach County Jail after she drove about a mile and a half into an area off limits to her because of potential proximity to the former student. Flannigan is accused of carrying on a 19-month sexual relationship with a former student at Rolling Green Elementary School in Boynton Beach beginning in June 2002. The boy told investigators the two had sex at the Boca Raton home Flannigan shared with her husband, Douglas DePue, who has filed for divorce. Terms of Flannigan's house arrest had permitted her to leave home to visit her child and to meet with her attorney, Kenneth Ronan. Flannigan was monitored by a global positioning device that tracked her whereabouts. The violation occurred as Flannigan traveled to see her autistic son in a facility off 45th Street, according to testimony Monday. When she was placed on house arrest, Flannigan was instructed to avoid specific boundaries bordering the child's home and school, according to testimony. But on Feb. 19, as Flannigan drove north, she exited Interstate 95 at Gateway Boulevard and drove east to Seacrest Boulevard before getting back on the interstate at Hypoluxo Road. Ronan told Circuit Judge Lucy Chernow Brown that since his client only had an hour to visit with her son, she exited the interstate to avoid a traffic jam. Ronan told the judge the incident occurred on a Saturday when school was not in session. "I think it's a big misunderstanding," Ronan said. Assistant State Attorney Jennifer Millien disagreed, arguing that Flannigan specifically was ordered not to exit the highway under any circumstances. "We all endure traffic every day," the prosecutor said. As soon as Flannigan entered the forbidden area, the tracking device sounded and instructed her "to leave the area immediately or go to jail," testified Deputy Kasandra Smith, who supervises Flannigan's house arrest. Smith said Flannigan called and left a voicemail explaining what happened but was arrested and sent to jail. Brown found that Flannigan "willfully violated" the house arrest agreement but allowed her to return home. She can only leave for court appearances and to meet with her attorney. Flannigan's son is now in a facility in Miami and she will not be able to visit him. Missy Stoddard can be reached at [email protected] or 561-832-2895. Copyright © 2005, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Gwen Ann Cardozo taught English at Wasson High School. Gwen Ann Cardozo, 33, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old boy numerous times during the past two months. Cardozo originally denied having a relationship with the boy until threatened with a lie detector test. Cardozo told police she is separated from her husband. Former Ponderosa High School teacher Nicole Andrea Barnhart was arrested in March for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student. She's facing charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and demonstrating a pattern of abuse. She faces up to 18 years in prison.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/st...041010787.html Nevada teacher arrested in alleged flashing ASSOCIATED PRESS LOVELOCK, Nev. (AP) - A Lovelock high school teacher was arrested on suspicion of exposing her breasts to students and possessing marijuana. Lori Ann Robinson, 35, a special education teacher at Pershing High School, remained in jail Sunday in lieu of $537,211 bail. "We've got a couple of complaints she had bared her breasts to several different students," said Steve Von Rumpf, a detective with the Nevada Division of Public Safety. Von Rumpf declined to discuss specifics, but said the alleged incidents occurred over the last two years. The case surfaced after authorities investigated her brother, Joey Wilson, 32, also of Lovelock - a small farm town 90 miles northeast of Reno. Wilson remains in jail on suspicion of sexual assault in lieu of $535,000 bail. The alleged flashing led to Robinson's arrest last week on suspicion of open and gross lewdness, Von Rumpf said. She also was booked on suspicion that she failed to report child abuse, conspired to commit sexual assault and intimidated or dissuaded a witness. Pershing High Principal Anita Fisk said the teacher's arrest shocked the community, but students and staff were carrying on. "We are trying as a staff and a district to maintain what we feel is a safe and educationally sound environment," Fisk said. |

Sub Teacher Accused of Sex with Teen (04.12.05 - AP) — A substitute teacher in Fairfax County has been released from jail after being charged with having a sexual relationship with a 14 year-old male student. Authorities say 24 year-old Dana Snyder of Edenvale Road turned herself in on Monday morning. Police say they received a tip about the alleged relationship over the weekend. A spokesman for Fairfax County Public Schools says Snyder was hired as a substitute in September 2003. Paul Regnier says Snyder likely worked at many of the county's schools. Still, officer Richard Henry says authorities don't believe Snyder was involved with any other students. Snyder has been charged with two counts of carnal knowledge with a minor and was released on a personal recognizance bond. She faces at least two years in prison if convicted.

TRYST TEACHER'S SHAME By DAVID ANDREATTA April 13, 2005 -- EXCLUSIVE A Manhattan high-school teacher slept with her student for months and got pregnant with his child — but gave him only a barely passing 65 in social-studies class, according to a bombshell report obtained by The Post. The 18-year-old boy toy from the HS for Health Professions and Human Services shrugged off the grade, but couldn't forgive his teacher, Rhianna Ellis, 25, for reneging on her promise to abort the pregnancy. The details of the sordid 10-month affair — which included romps at a Queens motel and "one last time" in Ellis' Queens home — were chronicled in a recent letter from Special Schools Investigator Richard Condon to Chancellor Joel Klein. A spokeswoman for Condon's office confirmed the authenticity of the letter, but declined to comment on the case, which was closed in late February. The teen, whom investigators describe only as "Student B," said he had sex with Ellis four times a week at the onset of their affair in August 2003 — settling for three times a week as the relationship wound down in March 2004, according to the letter. By the end of May, the student had broken up with his teacher because she was "jealous, possessive and paranoid," but not before engaging in a final tryst at her home — with disastrous consequences. The student told probers that Ellis called him in June to tell him that she was pregnant with his child, investigators said. When he blew up in anger and suggested she have an abortion, Ellis allegedly agreed. By last fall, however, Ellis was five months pregnant, and in October filed for an unpaid "restoration of health" sabbatical, investigators said. Ellis, through her lawyer, declined to be interviewed by detectives. But yesterday, she denied that her 2-month-old son was the result of an affair with her former student. "The claims are false," Ellis told The Post, cradling the newborn in a mobile car seat outside her Glendale home. But phone records seized by probers confirmed that a very long relationship took place. In fact, the investigators said the pair exchanged more than 1,000 calls and text messages in an 11-month span over two cellphones owned by Ellis — one of which she bought for her teen lover after his phone was taken from him as a result of a $700 bill. He also called Ellis some 450 times from his dad's home at all hours of the day and night between October 2002 and April 2004, the probers said. The teen first became smitten with Ellis when she was his teacher in the 10th grade, telling investigators that she was "hot," according to the document. He was so lovestruck that he didn't even mind when she gave him a grade of 65 two years later, investigators said. "According to Student B, that grade 'wasn't bad,' considering he did not do any homework, did not pass any tests, and was late almost every day," Condon wrote to Klein. It was not clear precisely how old the boy was when the two allegedly began having sex. The age of consent is 17. Investigators began probing the affair last August, when the high school's principal reported receiving an anonymous letter about the matter in her school mailbox. Even though the probe was being conducted before Ellis filed for sabbatical, she was not removed from the classroom, as is normally the case with teachers under investigation for misconduct. Condon has recommended to the city Department of Education that Ellis be fired from her $40,225-a-year job and barred from working in the school system again. |

I realize I’m just an amateur in this thread, but it amuses me the range of charges that come up in these cases. Just in the last several cases posted, we see these:
Quote:
pretty boring, but things get better… Quote:
I like that, it’s extremely specific, and very directly inflammatory. Reeks of a micromanaging state legislature, actually. Bonus points to Colorado. Quote:
Now that has an old-school, Hester Prynne sort of ring to it. But to me, it lacks the sort of flair that the Colorodans have for theirs. I haven’t taken the time to dig back and find all the charging references… but it amuses me that the catalog seems to be wide open for policymakers and prosecutors to come up with something that so very specifically fits the circumstance. I wonder what the “alleged flasher” will eventually get charged with? How about: Improper personal exposure to individuals beneath age of majority in an academic or custodial setting? Oh, yeah, and giving out weed. |

I don't think this one was posted, given the date on the article. I gave it a quick search from February forward, so if it's old, sue me.
A Lexington woman pleads not guilty to having sex with a minor. You could call it a story of trust, as police look into allegations that a neighbor may have taken advantage of a trusting kid, and in the process allegedly broke the law. 35-year-old Pamela Charles is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy. Police say the alleged victim is a neighbor of Charles, living near her Russell Cave home. Tuesday, Charles appeared in court where she pleaded not guilty. For now, Charles is suspended from her job as a teacher's aide with pay pending the outcome of this case. Charles is a teacher's aide at Bryan Station High School. The alleged victim is a student at Bryan Station Middle. Fayette superintendent Stu Silberman says all the alleged activity happened off school grounds. Charles is to return to court on April 14th. She remains free on bond. She's been employed by the school since 1998. Silberman told 27 NEWSFIRST some teachers at Bryan Station High saw some suspicious activity between the two and contacted school officials, who called police. "This situation was discovered by our teachers. They took immediate action to report that to our administrators. They found some text messaging that looked inappropriate." This makes the fifth teacher this school year accused of inappropriate behavior with a student. Two employees have been cleared. One case is still under investigation, and two others, including Charles' case, are working their way through the court system.

And the follow-up from yesterday:
A Fayette County school teacher facing sexual abuse charges returned to court Thursday. Pamela Charles is accused of raping and sodomizing a 14-year-old boy who lives near her Russell Cave home. It was a story 27 NEWSFIRST first brought you last month. Charles' preliminary hearing was set for Thursday, but her attorney asked that it be continued for one week. Charles was also ordered to stay away from a nearby bus stop where her child and the alleged victim both catch the bus for school. She was also ordered to avoid any potential interaction that may happen because the two are neighbors.

This one appears to be from across the pond:
Female teacher suspended in sex probe Teenage pupil tells police of affair A female teacher from Luton's Halyard High School has been suspended – accused of having sex with an under age pupil. Police arrested and bailed the teacher after the teenager made a statement to family protection officers about the relationship, which allegedly started when he was 15. The boy's father has criticised the school's handling of the case, accusing it of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet. He said Halyard only suspended the teacher after he complained she was still teaching three school days later. The dad also claimed the school failed to act on an anonymous phone call, which he discovered had informed police about the alleged relationship a month earlier. He said: "I want to make sure they are investigating things properly for our benefit and for other parents. "It's the second situation at the school and it seems like they are trying to hide this one because it's the last thing they want." Former Halyard assistant headteacher Paul Douglas, 38, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for child pornography offences at Luton Crown Court earlier this month. Police this week confirmed a Halyard teacher had been arrested and an investigation was under way, with support from specialist family protection officers. Luton Council spokeswoman Lisa Levy said: "It's not our usual policy to comment on individual members of staff. "However, we can confirm a teacher working at Halyard High School has been suspended pending a police investigation. "We are unable to make any further comments until the investigation is complete." 30 March 2005

hxxp://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/brooklyn/nyc-teach0421,0,1674172.story?coll=nyc-manheadlines-brooklyn Story: B'klyn teacher arrested for sexual abuse BY LINDSAY FABER, WIL CRUZ AND ELLEN YAN STAFF WRITERS April 20, 2005, 7:34 PM EDT A well-liked Brooklyn math teacher was arrested Wednesday after she was allegedly seen making out with a 15-year-old student in a classroom at their school, police said. Joanna Hernandez, 27, was charged with sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, police said, after another teacher apparently spotted her and a student kissing in full embrace in an empty classroom during the school day, police said. The alleged incident took place Tuesday inside of IS 55 at 2021 Bergen St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police said, where the boy is an eighth-grader who used to be in Hernandez's math class, police said. Police were investigating whether the teacher and the student were in a relationship or whether the alleged incident was a first. The incident follows a newsletter sent out to principals by Schools Chancellor Joel Klein that referred to recent sexual incidents involving teachers and students. A guidance counselor and a social-studies teacher from Manhattan's High School of Health Professions were investigated for having relations with male students. One of them, teacher Rhianna Ellis, 24, is accused of sleeping with a senior and having his baby. She is on medical leave. "These incidents are deeply disturbing to all of us, for we know how traumatic this betrayal of trust can be for the children involved, and indeed for entire school communities," Klein wrote. "Abuse of this sort is absolutely unacceptable." In the alleged incident with Hernandez, a math teacher since 2001 who began as a substitute in 1999, Department of Education officials said she would be reassigned to a regional office in Queens until the investigation is complete. Department spokesman Keith Kalb said if Hernandez were convicted, she would be fired. Hernandez makes $45,583 a year. United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten came to Hernandez's side, calling her an "excellent" teacher and a "very hard worker" who denies the allegations. "If the charges are proven to be true, then she should not be in a classroom," Weingarten added.

And the problem in New York City appears to be surging, with the number of inappropriate relationships between teachers and students projected to double this year compared to last, reports from Special Schools Investigator Richard Condon show. The Post spoke to several experts on the recent spate of female teacher-sex incidents who said such abuse is more common than one would think and, in fact, on the rise. While an older woman in power seducing a boy is a turn-on to some, the woman is actually a selfish predator whose actions will wreak long-term emotional damage, they said. "The women aren't that different from the men," said Hofstra University professor Charol Shakeshaft, who was commissioned to write a report on the subject for the federal Education Department's No Child Left Behind policy. "On the one hand, we see a bunch of women who say they're in love and they're going to make a life together — these women are not really fully emotionally developed. "We also find women teachers who say, 'Wow, there is a hot kid. I'm going to have sex.' " Students outside Manhattan's HS for Health Professions and Human Services — where two affairs between female teachers and male students were alleged by city officials in a two-day period two weeks ago — agree pure lust can be a motivator for teachers, adding many sexual incidents between students and staff go unreported. "Guys walk along the halls bragging they can have sex with any [female] teacher they want," said junior Jasmine, 16. "I've heard of kids kissing teachers and going out on dates with them since I started high school." Sophomore Michael, 15, said, "Some girls dress up so they can look good for their teacher and try and impress them — I think it's sick." In the first three months of this year, 11 inappropriate teacher-student relationships were reported to Condon's office, compared to a total of 24 in 2004. This does not include incidents reported directly to police, such as the latest scandal involving IS 55 teacher Joanna Hernandez, who was arrested Wednesday for allegedly kissing a 15-year-old student in the classroom. About 9.6 percent of U.S. students will experience some form of teacher sexual misconduct between kindergarten and 12th grade, Shakeshaft said in a July 2004 report. "What these [teacher] offenders have in common is that the adult puts their needs ahead of the children," she said. "No matter what they say, a teacher's responsibility is to make sure the child is safe. There is no rationale for sex, no exception." Exposing these offenders has never been a priority for the school system. Shakeshaft analyzed 225 cases of teacher sexual abuse in New York in 1994 in which all of the staffers had admitted they committed the crime. None of the perpetrators was reported to police or school investigators, and only 1 percent lost their license to teach. And Shakeshaft said Mayor Bloomberg's comment that the latest spate of teacher student sexual incidents is "business as usual" hinders child advocates' push for better training and reporting. Educators can keep a lookout for common patterns among teacher offenders, such as "grooming" potential victims by spending more time with them after class or giving them gifts, said Terri Miller, president of the organization SESAME (Stop Educator Sexual Abuse, Misconduct and Exploitation). "It may be a female who was not particularly popular and wasn't feeling that attractive at school, and here she is getting the respect and adulation as a teacher," Miller said "That's when children can be exploited."

What have we learned about women who prey on pupils?
By Connie Lauerman Tribune staff reporter Published May 11, 2005 The upcoming wedding of ex-teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, 43, and her former pupil Vili Fualaau, now 22, shines a spotlight on female teachers who cross the line into illegal sexual relationships with underage male students. Letourneau served 7 1/2 years in prison on a conviction of second-degree child rape for having a sexual relationship with Fualaau when he was 12. That she is marrying him may be unusual, but she is not the only female teacher accused of having a relationship outside the classroom with a male student. The vast majority of sexual offenders are men, experts believe, but this year, based on media reports, it would seem women are catching up--or perhaps finally getting caught. From coast to coast, there were cases in which female teachers were accused of having sexual relationships with their male adolescent students during this school year. - Margaret De Barraicua, a 30-year-old California teaching intern, was arrested in February after police found her and a 16-year-old male student parked behind the school with the car windows steamed up. - Pamela Turner, 27, a physical education teacher in Tennessee, was charged in February with having sex with a 13-year-old student at his home and in the school over a two-month period. - Around the same time, police arrested Katy Tew, 30, a Winterville, N.C., English teacher, and charged her with having sex with a 16-year-old student. Female teachers who become sexually involved with adolescent males are unusual among sexual offenders because they generally target one person and remain involved with them for a period of time, according to Stephen Thompson, sexual aggression services coordinator at Central Michigan University. "[Women] truly believe they've got a relationship being established with that one person," Thompson said. "They understand that it's not right, but they can justify it because they are saying they're giving the gift of love." Dubbed "teacher/lovers" by some researchers, these women, Thompson said, see the adolescent victim as "this person they have been around for a while and then all of a sudden this fantasy process starts. They cultivate by flirting, by creating little secrets, saying `this is our secret' by making the person feel special." That courting ritual differentiates male and female teacher predators, said Robert J. Shoop, professor of educational administration at Kansas State University. "In most of the cases of male perpetrators, there are several victims sequentially over a period of time" with no expectation of "living happily ever after." There is no psychiatric literature on female teachers who have inappropriate relations with male students, according to Janet I. Warren, associate director of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Most information is based on individual case studies and court cases. "You don't usually have women who are sexually attracted to children," she said. "It could be that you have women who are psychopathic and [will] have sex with anybody that is attractive to them. You could also say these are lonely women, depressed women or women who are immature and have poor judgment. It's problematic, but it's not a form of diagnosable mental disorder." Pop culture's effect Popular culture, especially movies like "The Summer of '42" and "The Graduate," seems to normalize such encounters as a rite of passage, with the older woman serving as a mentor in the transition from childhood into adulthood for a boy who wants an opportunity to lose his virginity. A light-hearted article on the recent teacher/lover cases in the April issue of Details magazine suggested "maybe we ought to be happy for these pubescent pioneers. Right now every one of the teacher-bagging twerps is probably being carried atop his classmates' shoulders like some conquering homeroom hero." No one knows how common teacher/lovers are, but a U.S. Department of Education report released last year showed that 40 percent of students report some form of sexual misconduct from a female teacher, including about 7 percent reporting unwanted physical contact. "When you look at official reports [from schools], you see maybe 95 to 97 percent of the offenders are male," said Charol Shakeshaft, a professor in the education department at Hofstra University, who wrote the report. "But the data we have from the students indicates that a much higher percentage of students identify offenders as females." Shakeshaft said some of the boys don't report such teacher behavior because they don't think of it as abuse at the time. Even if they do think of it as abuse, she said, they think they'll be ridiculed for reporting it. Boasting shines light "The typical response [by school officials] to the boy is `Well, gee, I wish I would have had that kind of problem when I was in high school,'" Shakeshaft said. In some cases, the boy's boasting brings the situation to the attention of authorities, according to Steven B. Blum, consulting psychologist at the Lincoln Regional Center sex offenders services program in Nebraska. Still, Blum said, "most adolescent males are pretty curious about sexuality and a lot of them don't have a lot of experience. They're vulnerable to a coercive female, who is aggressively pursuing them." Often a vulnerable male is pursued, Blum said. "They have poor self-esteem and tend to be devastated after the fallout. It undermines self-esteem." In recent years Blum said he has encountered four or five women who fall into the teacher/lover category, meaning adult women, not necessarily teachers, sexually involved with a young male adolescent. "The women ... have had pretty dysfunctional childhoods, chaotic childhoods, and, typically, poor relationships as children with their fathers as well as a lifetime pattern of abusive relationships. ... They tend to turn to a younger, adolescent male to feel more in control, more comfortable in a relationship."

Female teacher jailed for sex with pupil
Last Updated Wed, 04 May 2005 23:55:25 EDT CBC News SYDNEY - An Australian teacher has been jailed for six months for repeatedly having sex with a 15-year-old student. A lower court had given Karen Louise Ellis a 22-month suspended sentence after she pleaded guilty on six counts of having sex with the teenager – but an appeal court overturned that decision on Thursday. The judge upheld an appeal by prosecutors, who criticized the earlier sentence as too lenient. Justice Frank Callaway said Ellis, a 37-year-old physical-education teacher with three children, should have been incarcerated for years. "This was not a foolish lapse on one occasion that was not repeated," he said in a written judgment as he upheld an appeal by prosecutors. "There were six counts and two distinct periods of offending." He said the law has a responsibility to treat men and women according to the facts of their case, not their gender. Callaway added that the law must act to protect all children from abuse, especially from those who hold positions of power and authority. He sentenced Ellis to six months in jail, followed by a suspended sentence of 26 months. At the earlier trial, Ellis testified that she had unprotected sex with the teen at her home while her husband was away.

I saw a commercial over the weekend that absolutely stunned me.
I don't remember specifically what it was for, but it was some kind of cologne or male body spray. The gist of the commercial was a teen-aged boy arriving at his date's house to pick her up. The mother answers the door, invites the boy in, and as he walks by, she gets a whiff of his "scent" and is obviously drawn to him. Then there's some awkward talking between the two, as she draws closer, and then the top button on her blouse pops off as she appears to begin moving in...when the daughter either calls from upstairs or comes downstairs, interrupting "the moment." I guess I shouldn't ever say "I can't believe I just saw that" these days, but...!

Debra Lafave hearing this morning
Tampa, Florida - Debra Lafave was in court today for a pretrial hearing, that ended up being postponed until June 16th. The prosecutor says they are awaiting the completion of two psychological tests, one being performed by the defense, the other by the prosecution. After the tests are completed, a plea deal may be worked. Last month, a judge pushed back the July 18th court date to give both sides a chance to settle out of court. Both the prosecution and defense want to avoid a trial, to prevent the boy from having to take the stand. Tampa Bay's 10 News |

Lafave plea deal in the works
The prosecutor stressed that the 24-year-old teacher was not insane at the time of her alleged affair with a teenage student.By SHANNON COLAVECCHIO-VAN SICKLER, Times Staff Writer Published May 18, 2005 TAMPA - The state's psychologist recently concluded Debra Lafave was not insane at the time of her alleged affair with a teenage student, but prosecutors will nonetheless spend the next few weeks exploring a possible plea deal for the former teacher whose case has generated international attention. Prosecutor Mike Sinacore told Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman on Wednesday that he will work with Lafave attorney John Fitzgibbons toward "a resolution" in the case against 24-year-old Lafave. But later, Sinacore stressed: "The doctor says she is legally sane. She was sane at the time of the offenses." Timmerman scheduled another pretrial hearing for June 16. Lafave's trial is scheduled to begin July 18. Sinacore said in a previous court proceeding that for the sake of the alleged victim, who would have to testify, he wants to avoid a trial - which is expected to garner the attention of newspapers, tabloids and other media outlets. Investigators say Lafave began having sex with the teen, a recent graduate of Greco Middle School where she taught reading, just a few weeks before Temple Terrace police arrested her in the teen's driveway. Fitzgibbons is pursuing an insanity defense for Lafave, who pleaded not guilty to four felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition following her arrest last June. Each count carries a maximum 15-year prison term. Fitzgibbons' psychologist already evaluated Lafave and determined she has "issues," the attorney said. He has not released the reports from the evaluation, nor has the state released its psychologist's findings. But Lafave's older sister Angela Beasley, pregnant at the time, was killed in April 2001 by a drunk Army captain. Lafave's mother testified during the court martial for the captain that her youngest daughter became "pretty much a basket case" after Beasley's death. Lafave bought a statue of a butterfly for her sister's grave, and she has two butterfly tattoos on the small of her back. Wednesday, she wore a butterfly pin on the lapel of her olive green skirt. She also wore a cross around her neck. She stood between her parents and Fitzgibbons but said nothing, as Fitzgibbons told reporters his client clearly meets one half of the two-pronged criteria for the insanity defense. "I don't think any of the doctors from either side will disagree that Debbie is ill and has suffered a great, great deal over the years," he said. Fitzgibbons did not address whether Lafave knew right from wrong regarding the alleged affair - which also must be proved for an insanity defense. During a June 21 phone conversation between Lafave and the teen that was taped by authorities, Lafave told the teen she was coming to pick him up. She wanted to know if his mother had left for work. He told Lafave she was gone. "Pinky promise?" Lafave said. "Yes," the teen answered. "Say pinky promise," she said. An hour or so later, Lafave was in police custody. |
