Can you even live in L.A. on $2m/year?

$2M plus $25M in endorsements, probably.

Seems like a big win for the Dodgers. But yeah id expect a potential rule change even if i doubt many others would do this.

I read that deferred money doesn't count against the luxury cap threshold now, but will it ever count? Will it count when they start making deferred payments or that basically money that the Dodgers are never really accountable for from a competitive balance standpoint?

I thought it counted based on average annual salary calculation which was $46M.

Ohtani is going to make anywhere from 25-40 million dollars in endorsements. Baseball players generally cant dream of that kind of money in endorsements.

That is still going to be 20+ million a year in savings. 20 million will buy you a pretty good baseball player to fit under the limit. My question is what happens to that 240 million that the Dodgers seemingly will never have to be responsible for as far as competitive balance goes. Does it just disappear into Ohtani's pockets eventually or are they eventually going to have to take responsibility for that money as far as luxury tax goes.

Never accountable is the correct answer.

They’re also dodging about 12M a season in Luxury tax payments. They’ll pay 23M in tax on the 46M value vs the 35m they would spend on 70m

Pirates now lose their (presumed) starting catcher in the Dominican Winter league. This offseason is going great. But at least we signed Rowdy Tellez

Yamamoto 12/325 to dodgers. Combined with the posting fee, it's over 375 million. Ladies and Gentlemen, it used to be a "WOW" when the entirety of free agency spending went over 1 billion dollars. This year, the Dodgers themselves have guaranteed a billion dollars... to two players.

Also, from what I read, the way the Ohtani contract is structured, LA may make $500M to $1B off the deferred portion. So, I don't even know if it counts as anything more than a payable on the books.

I cant imagine any other players doing the same but the Ohtani signing could be one of the best ever given the contract structure.

Rowdy Tellez and Martin Perez signed with the Bucs.

The all-unsigned team is really good right now.

C-Gary Sanchez
1b-Rhys Hoskins
2b Merrifield
Ss-Amed Rosario
3B-Matt Chapman
OF-Joc, Bellinger, Soler, Michael A Taylor, Tommy Pham

Rotation-
Snell
Montgomery
Kershaw
stroman
Greinke

Others

Isn’t that like a 85-90 win team

Roughly an 82 win team based on WAR last year not including relievers and bench players (assuming a team of 0 WAR players goes 48-114)
