Allens kickoff goes 3 yards into the end zone, Besbeas returns it 18 to his own 15.
1st and 10 for Southern Miss. Roberson runs around the right end and gains 4 - he's topped by Westbrook and Durham. Oddly, I have not seen Herman Sanderson's name ONCE today. 2nd and 6. Illegal Shift on S. Miss. 2nd and 11. Cassidy to Besbeas and he connects - gains of 10. 3rd and 1. Cassidy fades to pass on 3rd and short - but we blitz Arnswaldt and slams Cassidy to the ground! A sack and a loss of 5. 4th and 6. 41 yard punt, fair catch by Kenneth Wertz. 1st and 10 Wolfpack at our own 40. Amaya fakes the handoff to Macri and throws it up to top to Donald Clark - it takes all 6 feet 2 inches of him, but he comes down with it for the 26 yard completion. 1st and 10 at the S. Miss 34. Amya to Wertz on the slant - complete for 10 yards! We can smell it now...1st and 10 at their 24. Macri goes offtackle and gains 5 behind the KRB by Cedric Wayne. 2nd and 5. Linquist goes around the right end and is stopped just beyond the first down marker. 1st and 10 at the 14. Macri off the right guard - big hole (KRB by Wayne) and a 7 yard gain. 2nd and 3 at the 7. A counter to Macri nets 1. 3rd and 2 at the 6. A reverse (of all things) to Clark gets 3 and the first down. 1st and goal at the 3. A trap to MAcri and he busts through into the end zone! Extra point by Allen is good! North Carolina State 19, Southern Mississippi 0, 4:40 left in the 3rd. Drive: 8 plays, 60 yards, 4:04 off the clock

Allens kickoff travels to the goal line - it's returned by Camarillo to the 21.
1st and 10. Cassidy screens it to Rodgers...somehow there's NO ONE there and he picks up a couple blocks. He's finally dragged down after a 48 yard gain! 1st and 10 S. Miss at our 31. False start, S Miss. 1st and 15. Cassidy pass to Roberson is dropped. 2nd and 15. Roberson goes around the left end and gains 1 - he's stopped by Steve Durham. 3rd and 14 at our 35. Rodgers runs around the right end is stopped after a gain of 7. 4th and 7 at our 28. 45 yard FG falls short of the crossbar . Our ball at our 28. Macri off the right guard, KRB by Bednarsh - gain of 12. 1st and 10 at the 40. Another KRB by Bednarsh, another run by Macri, and another big gain for him - 9 yard gain. 2nd and 1. Macri is stopped for a 2 yard loss (I think he may have just collapsed from exhaustion . that's the end of the wquarter.... North Carolina State 19, Southern Mississippi 0, end of the 3rd quarter

The 4th quarter begins for us..3rd and 3 at our own 47. Fake handoff to Macri and Amaya spots Jack Mackie on a crossing pattern - complete for 10 yards and the first down. 1st and 10 at the S Miss 43. Macri runs the trap and gains 3 on first down. 2nd and 7. Macri off the right tackle, but he loses 1 (188 yards on 33 carries for Macri thus far). 3rd and 8. Amaya goes long and he's picked off by Bullock at the 22 - a return of 4, and Souther Miss will have the ball at their own 26.
1st and 10 for S Miss. Cassidy's pass to Brown on first down is dropped. 2nd and 10. Cassidy goes long to Camarillo and he finds him open for a 47 yard gain. 1st and 10 at our 27. Delay of game, S Miss. 1st and 15. Pass to Besbeas is dropped. 2nd and 15. Cassidy throws away from the double coverage but doesn't see Ralph Spaulding step in front at the last second...intercepted! Ralph saves the shutout! 1st and 10 for the Wolfpack at our own 3 yard line.

Amaya (as he has done all this year) comes right back and attempts a pass after an interception. Amaya shocks everyone by catching Trent Brodie in stride on a slant and it nets us 24 yards! 1st and 10 at the 27. Macri gets the call and gains 5 before being pushed out of bounds. 2nd and 5. Macri gets the handoff and blasts through the line behind Cedric Wayne's crushing block - gain of 15! 208 yards on 35 carries for Macri on the day . 1st and 10 at the 47. Macri's dropped for a one yard loss. 2nd and 11. Linquist offloads Macri and takes a carry for a gain of 4. 3rd and 7. Amaya passes to Kenneth Wertz on 3rd and long and it gains 12 - first down! 1st and 10 at the 38. Macri off the left tackle gets 6 yards. 2nd and 4. Macri falls to the ground and loses 3. He's still breathing, right? 3rd and 7. Macri is stopped for no gain, bringing up 4th and 7. Amaya goes for it on 4th down...he fades and finds Orlando Macri gimping his way across the middle - complete for an 11 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the 24. Macri needs a rest, so he takes the ball and gallops his way 24 yards for his 3rd TD of the game.
North Carolina State 26, Southern Mississippi 0, 6:03 left in the game Drive: 11 plays, 97 yards, 5:55 off the clock

Allen's kickoff is 9 yards deep into the end zone. Touchback.
1st and 10 Southern Miss at their 20. Temes runs around the left end, picks up a block and gain 10. 1st and 10. Rodgers goes up the middle and is stopped by Westbrook and Murphy after 2. 2nd and 8. Cassidt passes and it's compete to Brown for another 2. 3rd and 6. Cassidy to Meadows...complete for 7 yards and a first down. 1st and 10 at the 41 - 3:23 left in the game. Cassidy to Alcott nets 19 - tack on an Unnecessary roughness and it's S Miss ball at our 25. Have I ever told you how much I love the prevent defense ? 1st and 10 at our 25. Temes runs off the left tackle but he's nailed for a 2 yard loss by C.J. Schmaltz. 2nd and 12. Rodgers up the middle nets 3- DT Myron Branch is hurt, but it doesn't look too serious. 3rd and 9. Cassidy completes it to Copeland in the end zone for the 24 yard TD. Oh well...no shutout. N.C. State 26, Southern Mississippi 7, 2:05 left

Kickoff is a touchback. Do we bring in the seniors?
Well, maybe not the seniors but the subs come in. Billy Joe Ramirez goes off right tackle for 13 yards - KRB by freshman Glenn Buckner. 1st and 10. Linquist goes off the right guard for no gain. Ramirez runs up the middle for 2 yards. 3rd and 8. Macri (!) runs up the middle for a yard. 235 yards on 41 flippin' carries. 4th and 7. We punt, they return...holding penalty on them...they have the ball at their 38 with 1:05 left. Nickel defense - yay, no prevent! Cassidy pass is intercepted by true sophomore Roy Murphy and returned 53 yards for the TOUCHDOWN! WAHOO! N.C. State 33, Southern Miss 7, 57 seconds left

Our offensive line had 26 KRBs on the day. 6 each by Bednarsh, Wayne and Frederick, 5 by Matthews and 1 each by Sweeney, Buckner and Miller.
Orlando Macri is a machine.

A solid end to a good first season. What happened to Sanderson in that last game? Was he just talking to the cheerleaders on the sideline?

We were 28th in one poll and I think 35th in another. Despite big wins (over FSU) and losing to Miami by only 3, it was very hard for us to move up in the polls.

New files are available for download. Raven and Mike, I'd like you each to recommend a new coordinator for your side of the ball. Both of our coordinators last year were just plain awful and I'd like to remove both
I'll work on the Syndicate position.

A Look at Our Incoming Class
Name (current/potential) T Bo Blackwell (19/81) - 75 endurance, looks equally impressive blocking for both the run and the pass (95/91 potentials). QB Ty Chavez (4/75) - Scrambling-type QB, excels in shorter passing game. Will be excellent in keeping the ball out of the opponents hands via the pass, but may have a propensity to fumble. Seems to have a lot of potential. OLB David Palma (9/66) - Hmmm...looks like a bust. May eventually become halfway decent against the run and may become a good pass rusher. Seems destined to become a backup. DT Casey Batista (15/65) - Excellent endurance. Green bars up the wazoo, but will he ever tap that potential? G J.T. Torres (14/63) - Low endurance. Another guy with LONG green bars. Definitely a project. OLB Riddick Perry (10/62) - Another backup. May become decent as a blitzer. C Richie Harmon (17/60) - 100 endurance and long green bars. DE J.J. Heath (18/56) - 43 endurance, potentially better against the run than the pass. Another guy with tons of potential, but also the chance of doing absolutely nothing. S Ellis Compton (19/55) - May have the chance to become an insta-nickel back as he can come up with the big pick. Eventually, may also help as a run stopper. Coverage skills are average at best. TE Corey Adams (16/51) - Our first signee. Already pretty good on 3rd downs and over the middle. Has the potential to be a very good receiving type TE and about average as a blocker. May also excel as a special teamer. Has a lot of heart. Tends to cough up the ball CB Marshall Spencer (13/48) - Another guy who has shown in practice that he can come up with the big interception. Other than that, looks like he'll be riding the bench. The remaining guys are non-scholarship walk-ons who will excel off the field

A Look at Our Returning Players
Quarterbacks Kenny Spragan, Senior. Started 4 games for us last year before his season ended with a torn ACL. Returns to spring practice still nursing the injury, but he should be ready by week 2 of the season. Completed 49.5% of his passes last year (against stiff competition like VTech and Ohio State) along with 7 TDs and 5 Ints. Excels at the screen and long pass. More of a pocket passer. Arnold Dudzik, Senior (2 years eligibility left). Has a strong but inaccurate arm. Will probably back up Spragan this year and vie for the starting job next year with Ty Chavez. Leslie Harper, Sophomore (4 years eligibility). A walk-on, but he actually has decent potential to be a viable backup. Likes to run. Runningbacks Orlando Macri, junior. Rushed for 1274 yards and 14 TDs last year. Some scouts say he played over his head. Excels as a pass catcher. Robert Low, junior (3 years eligibility). Redshirted last year. Some feel he may challenge Macri for the starting job this year despite Orlando's incredible year in 2004. Billy Joe Ramirez, junior (3 years eligibility). 85 yards on 29 carries last year. Worked hard to improve himself in the offseason. Some see him as a possible 3rd down runningback. Has a lot of heart. Al Pryor, senior. Ineligible. Whispers around campus say he has more problems than just academic. May have been the most talented back in the Wolfpack backfield, but we probably will never know. Fullbacks Clyde Hickman, junior (3 years of eligibility). Played as a backup last year. Caught 2 passes for 6 yards. A walk-on. Adam Withers, senior. The coaching staff redshirted him last year to start this year. Not a good blocker, but has the ability to catch a pass now and then. Tightends Calvin Stephenson, senior. Redshirted last year to start this year. Pretty good over the middle and doesn't drop the ball often. Purely a pass catcher and negligible as a blocker. Kevin Gilman, sophomore. Caught passes last year for 18 yards and 1 TD. Has the skills to become a good possession receiver but has a hard time getting open. Potential as a run blocker. Rob Rivers, sophomore. 2 catches for 28 yards last year. A walk-on but isn't afraid to go over the middle, which is rare. As most with most walk-ons, doesn't have the athletic ability, but has all the heart necessary. Wide Receivers We are STRONG here! Rodney Givens, senior (2 years eligibility). Could be a breakout player. Due to depth at this position, redshirted last year. Does everything equally well. Donald Clark, senior. Can do it all. Doesn't like to go over the middle, but with his size and speed doesn't have to. Caught 61 balls last year for 1128 yards. Wants to catch more TDs this year. Earl Forbes, junior (3 years eligibility). 5 catches for 63 yards last year. Will find it hard to find playing time on this team. Trent Brodie, senior. 29 catches, 410 yards and 5 TDs a year ago. Excels over the middle and doesn't drop the ball once it's in his hands. Not a blazer, but big at 6-1, 201 lbs. Kenneth Wertz, senior. Began the year as a starter but stepped aside for Donald Clark. A team player as he never complained a bit. 26 catches for 302 yards and 5 TDs in 2004. Big play type receiver who can get open. Also excels as a punt returner. Butch Washington, senior (2 years eligibility). Redshirted last year. Is okay at getting open, but once he does, watch out! He may be a guy who averages 20+ ypc. Julio Harmon, junior (3 years eligbility). Excellent on 3rd downs and isn't afraid to risk life and limb across the middle. Never seems to get tired - always volunteering to help in any way he can. Staff seems to think with additional coaching he can cut down on his drops in practice. Very skilled for a walk-on. Offensive Line C Albert Hein, senior (2 years eligibility). Equally good as a pass blocker and run blocker and excels at both. Probably won't win any awards, but is very solid. C Ricky Bednarsh, senior. Started all 12 games for us last year and contributed 32 KRBs and allowed only 3 sacks. Good student. C Leroy Koester, senior. Walk-on backup and, as walk-ons will do, allowed 1 sack in only 2 pass plays. G Nathan Matthews, senior. Started all 12 games last year. 17 KRBs in 38 opps. Allowed 4 sacks. Better at defending the pass - okay as a run blocker. G Glenn Buckner, sophomore. Played in 9 games last year as a backup. 1 KRB in 9 opps. Has the potential to be an average Div-1A player, but may be forced into a starting role this year. G Kim Garay, sophomore (4 years eligbility). A walk-on, but has the potential to be a capable backup. Unfortunately, we may not have that luxury down the road. T Newt Lentzner, senior (2 years remaining). Started in 8 games last year, before injuries vut his playing time. 15 KRBs in 53 opps, allowed 5 sacks. Has a lot of potential, but needs to start doing the extra work required to be a great one. T Hugh Frederick, senior (2 years remaining). Filled in last year when injuries took their toll and took full advantage of this increase in playing time. 16 KRBs in 31 opportunities . This may be a sign of things to come as he has the potential to dominate as both a run and pass blocker. T Kelvin Miller, senior (2 years remaining). Started all 12 games. 14 KRBs in 43 opps. Potential to be a great run blocker but will proably never be more than adequate as a pass blocker. Special Teams P Grant McCarthy, senior. Averaged 35.0 yards per kick last year. P Pat Hilton, sophomore (4 years remaining). Probably will become the starter when McCarthy leaves - just a notch below him as a kicker. K Vincent Allen, sophomore. All-Freshman NCAA and 1st Team ACC. 20 of 23 on FGs, 42 of 42 on EPs. Incredible accuracy and pretty good power. We really lucked out with this guy. K Martin Bolton, senior. A good kicker in his own right, but doesn't have much chance of playing with Allen on the team. Overall impression offensively: My concerns are - starting guard and Kenny Spragan. We may have to move one of our centers to guard position if we think the move will be beneficial. At wide receiver we are LOADED. Please, please let Kenny Spragan be able to get the ball to them! If that happens, we should be a lot of fun on the offensive side of the ball!

Defensive Returnees
Defensive Line DE Mario Beethoven, junior (3 years remaining). Played in 12 games last year as a backup, but still managed 4 sacks. May be one of those guys who plays better than his scouted ratings. DE Wayne Davidson, junior (3 years remaining). Redshirted last year. Has excellent portential, but very little skill at this time. Another one of those guys who is running out of time to show his stuff (if he has any). DE C.J. Schmaltz, senior. 38 tackles, 10 sacks, 17 TFLs last year as a starter. Equally good against the run and the pass. Will definitely anchor the line. 2nd Team All-ACC. DE Timothy Carter, senior. Average Div-1A player, but that's not bad for a non-scholarship walk-on. Played in all 12 games last year and picked up a sack in 37 pass plays. DE Leslie Davis, senior (2 years remaining). Another walk-on. Played in 11 games last year and picked up 2 tackles and half a sack in only 72 plays. A step below Carter, but again not bad for a walk-on. DT David Finley, senior. 29 tackles, 6.5 sacks in 12 starts last year. Average Div-1A player. DT Myron Branch, sophomore. 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks last year as a walk-on backup. Neglibile skills. DT Ian Lynwood, sophomore. 6 tackles and a sack in limited playing time. Yet another walk-on. Has the longterm potential to be a runstopper. Linebackers ILB Neal Hollins, senior. Stared 4 games when Thurman Arsnwaldt went down due to injury. Decent backup. 13 tackles and 2 sacks in 4 starts. Better against the pass than the run. ILB Levon Poston, sophomore (4 years remaining). Redshirted last year. Potential to be an excellent passrusher. Probably will never be very good against the run, and that's disappointing. ILB Herman Sanderson, senior. Led the team in tackles and TFLs. Quite frankly, IS the defense. Only 1 tackle in the bowl game leading to speculation that he was nursing an injury. ILB Ethan Alexander, sophomore. Walk-on who has a chance to be very good against the run. May play his way to a scholarship as runstoppers are needed here. OLB Steve Durham, senior. Started all 12 games last year. 29 tackles, 20 assists, 10 TFLs. Excellent against the run and a great cover linebacker (4 passes defensed). Would like to see him step up his tackles this year. OLB Erik Hoke, senior. Redshirted last year, but is chomping at the bit to start this year. Very much in the Steve Durham mode as a linebacker - good against the run and like to help out on the pass coverage. OLB Darryl Staggs, junior. Walk-on backup. Appeared in 9 games last year and contributed 3 tackles in 10 plays. Secondary CB Shane McNeil, senior. Redshirted last year to start this year. Excels against the run and against the pass on the man-to-man and zone. He will start and will play well. CB Jorge Montgomery, junior. Backup last year who chipped in with 2 interceptions. Coverage skills are average. CB A.J. McKenzie, junior. Walk-on. Played in 12 games but contributed very little. S Bubba Flynn, senior. Started all 12 games. Defended 5 of the 18 passes in his area. Had 44 tackles, 10 of them for a loss. A solid performer. S Roy Murphy, junior. Backup last year, but has the potential to become good against the pass. Never has shown the ability to help out on the run defense. Had 2 interceptions in a part-time role in 2004. S Jessie Cortez, junior. Walk-on. Had 1 interception in very limited playing time. Defensive Impression: We are one injury away from starting a true freshman at DT. Our OLBs excel at dropping back and helping out in the coverage, which is good because we only have one good cornerback. Our secondary is very thin, and unfortunately the true standouts are seniiors. I think we're in for a world of hurt defensively in the next few years. We need to recruit on this side of the ball and come up with some big wins.

Hi folks, could someone recap the evaluations of the new recruits listed above. I want to see how those numbers compare to your first local scout evaluations. Because I'm nosy and haven't been playing long. Thanks.. Go Wolfpack...kill miami...

I was doing Koester a favor. He shouldn't be dating senior citizens anyhow. As for it being my actual faut . . . I did tell her that he had the clap.
A couple of notes: I'm glad that I'll have a game or two to see what Dudzik can do before I put Kenny Spragan back in the lineup. If Arnie can do a decent job, Kenny may end up having continual problems with that knee . . . at least until Dudzik screws up. I was planning on probably having Bednarsh or Heiny move out to guard. We'll see if they can handle that or not. At WR and RB, I've got a couple tough choices to make. I'll find it very hard to bench Orlando "Mack Truck" Macri . . . so he'll probably end up getting the start in game 1. |

I'm going to offer our Syndicate Coordinator job to 53 year old Vinny Baker. He's excellent in academics and decent at soliciting donations. He's terrible at investigations, but that won't impact us.

He's also got a killer outside jump shot that we can use in the coaches - players charity basketball game. I'll get my business done tonight. |

Vexroid - are you still our recruiting coordinator? I admit I stink at recruiting as it takes a lot of patience, and I am void in that category. If you're not up to it, I say we ask in the main section if someone would like those duties. What do you guys think?

If Vex doesn't want to do Rec Coord, I'd be happy to take over that aspect of the game. If that is the case, though we'd have to backfill the Off Coord position. I've always enjoyed the recruiting aspect more than the game planning aspect of TCY anyhow. |

I'd hate to lose you as OC, but I'd rather have you do something you enjoy. Also, I'd be more comfortable doing gameplanning for the offense than recruiting, though I would still hope we can find a new OC to fill the void. Let's give it a couple days to hear back from Vex...if we don't hear anything, feel free to take the position .

Well for OC, I like Samuel Brady (or Brady Samuel). I forget because the board was down when I was originally trying to post this. Now I'm just working from memory. Anywho, I believe his stats looked something like this:
Play Calling - Pretty Good Injuries - Excellent Rehab - Excellent Congeniality - Poor QB - Excellent RB - Terrific WR - Terrific OL - Decent K - Terrible |

Coach Craig? Please go hard after 29yr old Ben Browning.
Play Calling - Terrific Injury Avoidance - Pretty Good Rehabilitation - Excellent Congeniality - Terrific Defensive Linemen - Lousy - Can't have it all. Linebackers - Excellent Secondary - Good I'm big on the whole injury avoidance/rehab thing...and he's the best out there overall.

Yep, slight FM2005/Christmas break, but I don't want to let this fall by the wayside. If I have time (which is questionable at this point), I'll probably restart this one the weekend.

I'll have to check my PC - but I know I've since gone through a hard drive loss. This was going to be an exciting team, too .
Just seems like we gradually lost everyone to attrition... The kids around here still talk about Justin Amaya - something about him being 9 feet tall, 400 lbs., and could throw a football over the upper deck and through the window of his car...while blindfolded.
