Another positive of last night's episode was that two plotlines that had been stretched a bit too thin finally came to an end.

The death of Shane should free some other things up. There was just too much time spent on the whole "Shane is dangerous!" stuff and the Lori-Rick-Shane-Carl thing. There really wasn't much left to do about it. You couldn't have another Rick v. Shane smack down. This was the logical and, really, only conclusion after Shane went off the rails and, if anything, it likely went on a bit too long. I liked aspects of Shane too, so I am sad to see him go, but it should give an opportunity for other characters to do more and introduce new characters.

Another bonus was getting rid of Randall. Again, there was too many episodes and too much time devoted to what to do with the guy. I like that they explored the moral implications of what to do with him and all, but, again, it could have been done a little more efficiently and probably a bit better.

They have now eliminated the two big internal threats - Shane and Randall - and finally it looks like we can start looking to some external threats. Like, say, a giant herd of zombies!!

The whole episode was beautifully shot.

Agreed, last night's epsiode was terrific in many ways. Frankly the first thru third episodes and last night's episode of this second half of the season have been some of the best of the series so far, all much better than anything from the first half except for maybe the first episode and the midseason finale.

Last night's episode was really good stuff...the tension building with Rick and Shane walking through the woods was good stuff. The scene at the end with the moon and all was great also. We don't know all the back history between Rick and Shane but they were best friends for the better part of their lives...practically brothers. Rick was very believable in the scene...

I had a question for anyone who's read the comics, you can PM me as not to spoil anything for the rest of the group...

Is the settlement the end up going to (the one they've hired an actor to play the mayor) the same settlement that Randall had been at?

This one spoil anything.

It's impossible to say.

There was no Randall character at all in the comics. And we don't know enough about the Governor and his settlement or what Randall's camp was really like. If Randall was telling the truth about his "camp", if anything, it sounded a bit small, but the show and comic have deviated so much by this point, you can't really know.

Yup.

I'm amazed at the number of people I know who think this show is better than Breaking Bad.

I had more of a feeling of that with Dexter though Walking Dead isn't far behind.

Hmm ... I don't know that I could honestly say it's "better" (even as someone who doesn't watch BBmore than sporadically at most), but it's more entertaining to watch. The two things aren't necessarily always the same (much like the Hot or Not debates I think)..

Predictions for next Sunday? Okay, I'll play along.

Ol' Herschel is a dead man walking, as are all of his people except for Maggie.
I think Carol is probably a goner as well, although perhaps doing something heroic like saving Daryl or Carl.

Survivors are Rick, Carl, Maggie, Andrea, Daryl, Lori (we won't be denied at least a zombie baby nightmare scene next season).

Questionable/day-to-day is T-Bone. I could see him going now or I could see him going very early next season.

If I had to pick a sleeper to die though, I'd go with Andrea.

Perhaps these people died early enough that they didn't catch the virus that it hadn't spread quick enough to infect them before they died.

Considering the stuff I've read when Kirkman is interviewed I predict the people that will die will be all of Hershel's people except for him and Maggie. Other than that Carol could be a goner sooner rather than later.

Yeah. I just recently started to watch "Breaking Bad" on Netflix. I am a few episodes into season 3. I think it's a great show. And, as much as I love "The Walking Dead", I can't really say that it's better than "Breaking Bad." "Breaking Bad" is just better in terms of acting, writing, directing and overall plot construction.

That said, if someone told me that I could only watch one of these shows, it'd be "The Walking Dead", because I loves me the zombies.

As for this...

Definites: Lori, Rick, Carl, Darryl, Andrea, Glenn, Maggie

Iffy: Carol, T-Dog, Hershel

Gonners: Hershel's younger daughter, her boyfriend and Otis' wife.

I've read that twice now. Is the answer: We really don't know enough about the virus to say? I am perfectly fine with that.

That comic is hilarious.

That episode was easily the best of the season. Unreal.

They've already killed off two of the better characters, Shane and Dale, so they better keep the few decent ones they have left. They need to keep Daryl, Glenn and Hershel. T-Dogg's expendable. So are all of Hershel's people except Maggie. Carol and Lori can die and nobody would care. Looks like the farm will be swamped with walkers so at least next season they'll have a different setting and hopefully new characters.

well, I didn't think they were going to kill of Shane and it was nicely handled. I really think many of the differences between the comic and the show have been for the better.

I agree with the sentiment above that this was a beautifully shot episode.

Hopefully next season won't be 12 or 13 episodes at a mall looking for someone that got separated from the group.

Cool cool. I'm just hoping for a little bit more action and less soap opera this next season.

I could do without the headshot after headshot at distance with a handgun from a moving vehicle.

Seriously, did these people every study history before the outbreak? All that time they were wasting ammo with shooting practice could have been spent making shield and long spears and learning a phalanx formation.

Nah, the fact that he had some dialogue this week was already revealed in a lot of print interviews earlier in the week.

Why is Lorie mad at Rick? That makes less than zero sense? If Rick had told Shane they were turning back on the Randall search after he figured it out, he would have just killed Rick anyway.

Also, why does the big reveal even matter? It changes practically nothing. It's not like they're immortal, they're going to die anyway.

Rick is more like Shane (already spoilered to that effect)
Andrea's savior is a much anticipated character from the source material
The last thing we see is the prison

The big reveal wasn't exactly much to write home about, but only because most people had already figured it out.

edit to add: re: Lori's anger -- Rick thinks she's pissed about Shane, I'm thinking it's more about not protecting Carl from having to kill + not revealing the infection to her while convincing her to have the baby

And their next location, the prison. Which is widely considered to be one of the best story arcs of the comic.

Their reactions to Rick made no sense. The idea that they were all appalled that he killed Shane under those circumstances was something they couldn't understand. Didn't Herschel watch Rick kill 2 guys in a bar for the exact same reason 2 weeks ago?

That's my m with the ending. I wasn't talking about the appearance of a character and te setting for next season. Although, i don't really consider that foreshadowing, it's more of a fanboy shout out, since it don't provide any context, instead it opted for cool visuals.

Not sure how many people were appalled. Herschel in particular seemed very content with his closing monologue. I think the others are going to come to terms with it in their own way, the reaction is going to vary roughly from Carol to Herschel. Seems fairly realistic to me.

Really good episode, other than the fact that useless Carol and Lori are still alive.
