That was a tough loss. We got away from what we do best when we tried to make the tough play at the plate rather than take the easy out at first. Typically, we realize the other teams are going to score and we'll let a run cross to eliminate the big inning. But in the heat of the moment at this point in the season, late in the game, clinging to a half game lead, when the opportunity presented itself Jeebs tried to get the out at home rather than geting the out a first...and not only did we not get the out at the plate then Palmer did the same thing with the very next batter and we ended up giving up an extra run. When that happens and you lose by 1 run, you just shake your head at your poor luck... |

That play keeps the FOFCers hopes alive as they remain half a game back with 1 to play... |

So I screwed up getting the box score for the game. I've rebuilt it best I can from the play-by-play and I'll post it tomorrow. But not everything in it will be accurate and it will be formatted differently... |

WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
"So we have the match up in the World Series that many predicted before the start of the season - The Post Nationals and the Negro League 1s...it wasn't as easy as many thought, as the upstart FOFC All-Stars gave the Post Nationals all they could handle. Taking it down to the last game of the season, and more accurately the last couple of innings before finally falling off the pace. They deserve a lot of credit for their efforts and we hope they will be back next season to give it another run, they were a fun team to watch...," Hack Jobb states. "However, our focus tonight it to compare these two great teams that will be starting to play for the championship tomorrow. They are both dominating on a lot of levels and we are going to take a peek at the different aspects of the teams to try and determine who has the edge..." "We'll start by looking at the pitching, as pitching is always so important in the post season, and both of these pitching staffs are strong. To help me break it down, I've brought in former pitching great Jim Kaat to get his opinion on the situation. So Jim, lets start by comparing the rotations of these two teams...the Negro Leaguers will probably rollout... - S.Paige 3.51 15 /12 - L.Day 3.73 13 / 4 - H.Smith 3.81 15 / 7 and if they elect to use a forth starter it will most likely be - B.Rogan 4.22 15 / 9 And the Post Nationals will counter with... - T.Seaver 3.06 16 / 2 - who looks like a front runner for the Most Valuable Pitcher in the NL - S.Koufax 3.30 14 / 3 - who pitched good enough to win a Most Valuable Pitcher award in most seasons - B.Gibson 4.64 12 / 8 And if they go with a fourth...Gaylord Perry or Juan Marichal, not sure which they would choose." "Now Jim, on the surface, the starting pitching edge appears to go to the Post Nationals. In fact, It almost looks impossible to beat Seaver and Koufax twice and the Negro Leaguers will undoubtedly face them both at least 2 times and maybe 1 of them 3 times." Kaat, "Very true. I mean, in total over the entire season those two pitchers only lost 5 times, hard to think they are going to lose 4 games with those 2 guys pitching 4 or 5 of the games in the series, but there are some interesting things to consider. If I'm the Posters, I'm setting up my rotation for Koufax to go first, with the Negro Leaguers being such a lefty heavy lineup...and I mean a lefty heavy, he stands the best chance of dominating. But the rest of that rotation is all right handed pitching, and that might bode well for the American League representatives. Those lefties on the Negro League team can really hit and they could give the Gibsons, Seavers, Perrys trouble..." "Hard to believe anyone could give Seaver trouble this year..." Hack Jobb quips..."what about the other way around." We'll the Nationals are a bit more right handed than left, with Aaron and Banks, both MVP possibilities, teaming up with Mays, Clemente, and more...but you have to be careful, because if you get too righty happy, Musial and Matthews will kill you...all that said, I believe Paige will do great in this series, and the rest of the rotation is good enough to win, but if you put me on the spot I'm giving the rotation edge to the Nationals." "What about the pens?" Jobb follows up. "Now that is a different story. The pen for the Negro Leaguers is deeper led by Bill and Rube Foster and MacDonald. The Nationals, have good arms, but they really lack a closer. Bunning served in that role must of the season, but he got killed a bunch. He gave up 25 more hits than innings pitched and he walked a batter every other inning. The edge here, clearly goes to the Negro Leagues..." "Is the pen disparity big enough to give the pitching edge to the Negro Leaguers?" "Probably not, but if I'm a Post Nationals fan, and it's tight late, I'm holding my breath for sure." "Jim, thanks for the insight, and before I let you go, is it true that you have been approached about being on a team in this league next time around?" "There have been some discussions floating around about the league expanding, and I've been contacted to gauge my interest. Not sure where this will lead at this point, but I'm open to having the conversation." "Thanks again Jim...and after the break, we will look at the defenses and then we'll finish up with the lineups..." - Last edited by Breeze : 07-26-2013 at 10:39 PM. |

WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
"So when we look at the defenses of these two teams, you get an idea why they are both here. I doubt there is a team in the league that can claim to have a better defense than these 2...maybe as good, but certainly not any better." Jobb explains. "To go over these defenses we've brought in Dick Allen..." "Why the hell did you bring me in here to talk about defense?" "Well, you played a lot of positions..." "Yeah, played them like crap...defense was a waste of time. It was something I did between at bats. They didn't pay me to play defense...they paid me to rake, and man could I rake. Now a days, I'd be a DH and I'd be so good at it, they'd have put my ass in the Hall of Fame and I'd be playing in this league rather than talking to some stupid shit like you...You and your producers are dumbasses if you thought I could break down defenses...I'm leaving..." "Um...we'll, yes...that was, um...interesting...we will be back shortly..." |

World Series Preview
"We're back after the very awkward session with Dick Allen, and with me now to talk about the defenses of the two World Series participants is Dwight "Dewey" Evans, an 8 time gold glove winner...Dwight, how do you access the defenses of these two teams?" "We'll Hack, both of these defenses are very good...you have gazelles in the outfield...Mays, Aaron, Clemente, vs Charleston, Bell, and Torriente...I don't think there has ever been to outfields with more range. It will be difficult to find gaps out there during the series. Both teams have great catchers with good arms, and excellent defense up the middle of the infield. The only areas where I think there is an advantage it at third, where when the Post Nationals use Eddie Matthews they give up a little on defense." "Of course they get 48 homeruns on offense..." Jobb counters... "Oh sure, and you'd and anyone else would take that trade off every day of the week, but from a defense only perspective that is a ding. Also Banks, and I know 50 Homers...isn't as good defensively as Lloyd." "So your overall opinion..." "The Negro Leaguers are better on defense..." "Thanks, Dewey...and before we let you go...I have to ask like I did to Kaat, we here you name as a possible member or an expansion team in this league. Is that true?" "Not sure, there are a bunch of good outfielders that are being mentioned like Murphy, Parker, Frank Howard, Bernie Williams, and I'm honored to be included in the conversation. We'll just have to see how it all breaks down..." "Up next what most of you have been watching for...a breakdown of the offenses...." |

World Series Preview
Hack Jobb smiles as the camera zooms in, "Finally, we are going to take a look at the offenses of the two league champions, and to help me with that we have Gil Hodges. Gil, on the surface the better offense seems pretty obvious, but is it?" Gil nods as he replys, "Well, it is pretty hard to argue with a team that has one 50 Homerun guy, three 40 homerun guys, and 3 or 4 more 20 home run guys...not to mention players like Mike Schimidt who only hit 14 but did it in just over 150 ABs...When a team has that kind of fire power it is awfully difficult to beat." "Just ask the FOFCers about that," Jobb chimes in. "Exactly, The FOFCers had a good offense. In some ways very reminicient of the Negro League team, with power, average, speed...but launching bomb after bomb the way the Posters can, just make it so tough to beat them." "Your really think the FOFC Offense was similar to the Negro Leaguers?" "Oh sure, and I think if you look at it closely the numbers will bear that out. The Negro Leaguers have a bunch of guys that can hit. Cool Papa Bell is a terrific table setter, and while Gibson was disappointed with his season, for a catcher it was extremely good. Charleston is tough, so is Leonard and Torriente. Also, if you look at the middle infield, most teams would kill to get the production the Negro Leaguers got from DiHigo and Lloyd, but when you compare the NL Posts, it isn't close. The one wildcard I'll give the Negro Leaguers offensively is speed. Almost everyone on that team can scoot...and if they get on base enough, they could make things happen, force the issue, maybe force the Posters to make a few mistakes, and they might be able to steal the series..." "Do you think they will steal the series," Jobb asks? "No, I don't. I think the Post Nationals are too strong, and I think they'll win in 5." "Your prediction, is very similar to our other guests so far. Kaat said NL Posts in 6, Evans said in 5, and Dick Allen told me to go screw myself, but in a much more vulgar way..." "We hope you enjoy the series..." |
