I've used this video which explores all the ramifications of an intriguing new technology a few times now. Makes me smile almost every time.

It's a big nerdfest (and I mean that lovingly). It's the fan fest for the Penny Arcade website and deals mostly with video games but also has a large section for tabletop/card/roleplaying games, too (at least, PAX East did). I fly in from London on the 30th and fly home on the 2nd. Thankfully, I'll miss the Olympics in London. /tk

Don't know why it took this long to occur to me, but we should (have) run an Olympic athlete HON.

For those that have been following at home regarding my job. I finally got my offer today after being told I got my job back. They want to give me a 5% raise as well. Sounds good to me!

Aaaaah summer Fridays. Only one in the office. 90+ degrees out. Just cracked both my windows (to get a cross-breeze) and leaned back in my chair and took a nap for an hour.

I got a scheduled test with a company I need to take to see if I can even get to the interview stage with them. They said the test takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Ugh.

I was reading about poker last night and I had always assumed Chris "Moneymaker" was a douchey stage name. Really surprised to find it was really his surname.

That awkward moment when you let your 10mo old play with your phone and she somehow gets to the video section and plays a video of your wife giving you a BJ.

I think we need a poll. Based on the amount of celebrity phones that apparently hold nudes/sex tapes, I'm guessing that an even larger number of regular peoples' phones do. I'd like a poll to see if this is true . And then I'd like to post a follow-up question. WTF were you people thinking? "Oh it's on my phone, this small mobile device that can easily be left anywhere. What's the risk?" |

Wait? Real people actually do that? I thought "hacked cell phone pictures" was just code for new publicity like celebrity "leaked sex tape" used to be

On a related note, I met some coworkers at the bar. One pulls out his phone & says "You want to see a great BJ?" I replied "Not if it involves your d*ck." He then looks disappointed & puts his phone away. Another coworker had the look on his face that told the story that he did not ask the qualifying question.

I would never even possibly consider recording anything like that. I guess I could understand it for long-distance relationships. But even if I would consider it, implied in my wife's willingness is a "don't ask about recording it," so I'm more than happy with the status quo.

My brother's wife and my wife both have problems that made having children seem unlikely. My brother's wife pulled it off yesterday though pulling off a 26 hour labor with no drugs popping out a 9 pound 12 ounce baby thus making me an uncle.
That thought is not my random thought. My random thought is I've been thinking about how strange the word "uncle" is. |

Grats Uncy Row!
Anybody have any experience with renting a college textbook rather than buying it outright? I've been perusing various websites (textbooks.com, chegg.com, etc etc) and the price to rent is significantly lower and books need to be returned by 12/21 for the Fall semester. I'm considering going this route, rather than shelling out $150/book.

I've used Chegg for the past year and a half. It's easy as hell.
I either use Chegg, Amazon used, or the school if both fail. Chegg is always my first place to look. They mail the book to you. You keep the box they send it in. When you are done, you put the book back in the box, print the shipping label from your account that is linked to the book, and drop it off at a UPS store. That is it. It's a great service. |

Awesome. Paying $40 to rent a book for 3-4 months is much more palatable than paying $200 to own it.

Chegg is probably the way to go. Depends if you get some class with nasty lockout software though. $150a book is worse case scenario though. Most of the shit I've used has been well south of $100.
Also not a bad idea to wait until class starts before buying. You can tell what the emphasis on the text might be. For example. I bought a 70$ reader for an English class. I could have just knocked the 10 responses out in the library and saved the money. |

Yea, this last quarter I got an A in a 300 Psychology class and i didn't even buy the textbook. Everything on the exams came from his powerpoint notes.
I am really going to be doing that now that I start Nursing in a couple weeks. The required books just skyrocketed, and they are not getting any cheaper. |

You know, my first reaction was "Ugh! Who wants that kind of spicy in a drink??" Then I remembered that the best tequila shots I've had (which admittedly isn't many, especially given my handle) have been Mexican Prairie Fires.

Just back from our weeklong summer vacation to Hershey, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach with a variety of thoughts:
- To the motorcyclist popping a wheelie on US 15 north in Maryland at 60+, I would have laughed if you would have wiped out. I might even have felt bad at laughing, maybe. - Same to two kids that went flying past us running and tried to stop on the wet pebble downhill walkway at Busch Gardens. - How do you have a hotel on the beach and NOT provide a way to wash the sand off before re-entering the hotel? I get that Virginia Beach provides these as well off the boardwalk, but they are at the public entrances to the beach, and the foot wash near our hotel was broken. We either had to walk up the beach a ways, or do what everyone else did and wash the sand off in the hotel pool. Ugh. - Maybe it's that we usually go to the beach in the Fall when crowds die down, but I couldn't believe how much little trash bits were on the beach at Virginia Beach. Bottle caps (metal and plastic), cigarette butts, and the like. Maybe it's having a boardwalk, but I don't remember seeing anything like this on the beaches in Wilmington. - Hershey is really commercializing the park. Apparently there is now a Hershey Museum, and all of the Hershey history has been pulled out of the ride at Chocolate World and into there. Plus the ride had the sound effects loud and the narration quiet, so we could barely hear. The kids had fun in the park, but boy do I miss my childhood days when you got to tour the actual factory. - Don't eat at the 21st Street Grill in Virginia Beach. We watched an employee cut raw chicken right next to the fixings bar they use for the sandwiches, drape the knife used across the tomatoes, work the register without washing her hands, and carry the bucket of raw chicken across the restaurant. They need some basic sanitation training there. Luckily we all made it back without getting sick. - We couldn't see the Giovanni's kitchen, but the food was excellent. - Loved watching F-18s constantly running landing patterns across the beach. I never got tired of that. - The Virginia Beach Aquarium is expensive and not well laid out. The exhibits were good, but they need a loop, rather than an out-and-back, layout to improve flow. It was pretty crowded trying to push through people to get from the end to the exit. The creek boat tour was nice and relaxing, though. We never got over to their second building (15 minute walk or drive up the road and park again). We had a great time overall.

Golfed for the first time yesterday on a real 18-hole course. I had only been on a driving range a couple of times, and had one trip to a 9-hole par three.
Played legit rules with penalty strokes and no do-overs - shot a 192. I bet I'll do better next time. |

Ha, close to 4 1/2 hours, but we spent a lot of time waiting for the 4-some in front of us (I was in a 2-some). My obscenely-poor score actually didn't slow us down very much, there were a lot of times I'd hit the ball 10 feet, and then I'd just walk up and hack at it again. I couldn't hit it far enough to say, spend time looking for it behind the green. It was still fun though, and there were a handful of times when I had a shot that very much resembled a golf shot. Edit: Or if you mean course length, it was 6,691 yards, par 72. Last edited by molson : 08-05-2012 at 11:09 AM. |

The Curious Case of Chavis Carter - NYTimes.com
Filed under things that are completely impossible. I really hope this isn't a case of two police offers essentially committing murder, but it seems rather implausible that they wouldn't find a gun on two searches and that a man, handcuffed behind his back would be able to retrieve the gun and shoot himself in the temple.

Please Michael Jordan, for the love of god, stop doing Hanes commercials (just saw the new one where he burns a talking tag from pants on a bbq grill. I wish I was making this up) You can't need the money...if you do, I will offer you a 20, heck I will offer my life savings. These commercials are that bad.
