Reactions like this is the reason I try to be as offensive as possible at times. It's really all just too damn funny.

We have the economy hanging by a thread, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, North Korea's sabre rattling and several other bad situations. Yet lets focus on some off-handed remark on an entertainment show.

Which of course totally misses the point. No one is saying that focus shouldn't be on those issues. It's stupid to say otherwise. But it shows a great deal of insensitivity by Obama to make the comment and anyone else who insists it's not that big of a deal.

Which is why he should have never been on the show in the first place.

That's because most people here don't care about your opinion.

I'd consider it insensitive if he truly was trying to disrespect the Special Olympics. He just said something that we all say privately out loud. It was extremely stupid but I still don't think it's a big deal unless his intentions were to take a shot at them.

Well, does anyone think he meant to offend? Really? I can understand being annoyed or upset by his comment, but do you honestly think he set out to offend the mentally handicapped with his comments?

You really think he has some secret vendetta toward the Special Olympics and realized this was his one shot to let it out?

You must really say these things in private all the time as well as publicly to get so worked up. Of course I don't think he has a vendetta. Then again, at least he had the common sense to appear remorseful.

I cheer for MBBF on this and am glad to see him championing equal rights and pointing out discrimination or disrespect when it occurs and look forward to his championing the same when it comes to human rights, civil rights, etc. Hear Hear!

/Admitted slight sarcasm to the above BUT if he shoves that sarcasm down my throat by being the Champion I hope he is and will be than that is good for everyone and Ill be keen to eat crow.

Fuck you MBBF. Fuck you.

I can see it coming already. MBBF will create a nice little PR appearance where he rides a bus somewhere with some kids from Special Olympics and then makes a joke noting that disabled people ride better than him. This just in......that doesn't change what you've already said. Disable people can do anything they want to do. You fucked up.

Check your ignorance at the door and actually attend a Special Olympics event. You might actually learn something about what motivated disabled people can achieve. Their effort in their endeavors even with their disabilities often dwarfs the efforts of lazy people who have no excuse for their lack of effort.

By the way, I hope the Kennedy family publicly hammers MBBF for this comment.

Millions of Americans are smart enough to know that this kind of ignorance needs to be battled at all levels. Disabled people have enough people who use them as the butt of jokes.

But it shows a great deal of insensitivity by MBBF to make the comment and anyone else who insists it's not that big of a deal.

Well well well. So what about the kids who ride the short bus? Just because they ride on a different bus they aren't as good as the kids who ride the regular bus, right? I just can't believe someone would joke about these poor little children who fight so hard everyday despite being at a disadvantage. YOU MONSTER! That's the problem with partisian politics. You guys pick the dumbest things to make news. We have two wars going on, worst economic situation since the depression, and major issues with our health care system. But the big news for you guys is a comment about the Special Olympics on the Jay Leno show.

And the comment has been socially acceptible for a long time. I admit that it was really stupid and he should apologize, but the "outrage" by people is laughable. I'd bet most people have called someone a retard, something retarded, or made a short bus joke. If your friend called something retarded, you wouldn't take offense. Unless you're someone fighting for the civil rights of special needs people who has been advocating the stoppage of those insults, it just makes you a hypocrit.

I'm not sure what's worse... MBBF's outrage over Obama's comment, or the fact that Larry searched the archives for something that would nail MBBF... all the while ignoring the wise adage that arguing on the internet is like winning a medal at the Special Olympics: at the end of the day, you'll still never be invited on the Tonight Show.

If you'll check, I was annoyed at Obama's comment, too. But I got the sense that MBBF was being hypocritical, especially in response to someone that said it is a common joke. It took less than a minute to confirm that suspicion.

I'm also amused by someone that comes to this board (or any board) to argue that it's lame to argue on the internet. The lack of perspective is hilarious.

It's even more amusing to state someone has a "lack of perspective" about someone making such a statement as though they are above it.

I don't know how to make it work, but allowing shareholders to have a greater say in top level compensation is something I'd generally be for. I'm also very much in favor of more transparency in reporting for publicly traded companies. Where I would draw a hard line is at totally private firms. They should be allowed to structure and report as they please.

I totally agree with all that - but it's too bad that sentiment doesn't seem to go both ways in this board. We spend so much time getting worked up over similar Republican gaffes. We're more concerned with Bush's grammar and Palin's wardrobe than their actual incompetence (not you, but certainly others here that are piling on).

While part of the article talks about that, that's not what I'm getting out of it in terms of giving shareholders the power (instead of government regulations).

"One proposal could impose greater requirements on company boards to tie executive compensation more closely to corporate performance and to take other steps to ensure that compensation was aligned with the financial interest of the company."

This surprises you? When the object of the game is to get all of the money to Washington & then let them divide it to the rest of us as they see fit, it seems like a pretty logical step.

Im actually with the Republicans on the AIG taxation thing. I dont want Congress to retroactively tax something in a punitive manner and Ive listened to dialogue about it today on both sides and think that we should pursue legal means in lieu of taxing means to get the money back.

The compensation issue should have been settled pre-bailout. That being said, I don't understand the outrage about retroactive changes. Doesn't that happen all the time? My rebate last year was the effect of a tax change applied to money that I had earned earlier in the year. I know it's better to get money than to lose money, but weren't both retroactive? As long as it applies to the current tax year it seems like retroactive tax changes happen rather frequently.

Am I wrong on this?

but it's being used punitively and that could be a slippery slope to allow Congress or Gov't to use tax law punitively. Its no good IMO

But that's a completely different issue than it being retroactive.

The link you posted wasn't a news article, it was a blog entry that was auto-posted. Do a search on the word 'mandatory', and there are two hits in the text of the bill. One is using it as a definition of a "service-learning curriculum", and the other is in a list of prohibited activities.

The blog article is not too accurate on their interpretation of the bill.
