Bulging pupils get special treatment from female teachers
Entrusted as they are with the sacred task of molding their students' minds and characters, teachers in Japan are accorded the same degree of respect as are members of the clergy. But like the clergy, they sometimes give in to their baser human instincts.

Such may have been the case for Mayumi Taniguchi, a 47-year-old Nagoya home tutor, who has been charged with violation of a local ordinance aimed at protecting minors from sexual abuse. Police allege that in February 2004, Taniguchi engaged in sex with a male pupil who was then in his third year of middle school.

Shukan Jitsuwa (9/15) reports her indiscretion came to light when the boy's mother consulted with the police. Under questioning, Taniguchi admitted that after their first tryst at a love hotel, the two had conducted a three-month affair. At the time, she was living with her second husband, a man five years her junior. Her first spouse was also reportedly several years younger.

"She's not a brassy type, or what you could call especially beautiful, but she always carried an expensive designer brand handbag," says a resident of the complex where Taniguchi lives. "There were few restraints on her life; I wonder what got into her to do something like that."

If found guilty, Taniguchi faces up to two years imprisonment or a fine of up to 1 million yen.

"It was a first violation, and it's possible the victim might not press charges," says a local reporter. "In that case, she'll probably just be let off with a fine, maybe 200,000 yen."

According to official data, 148 teachers were punished for engaging in obscene acts. While most were male teachers who preyed on their female wards, Shukan Jitsuwa suggests the reverse phenomenon may be more widespread than many realize. One case involved a 32-year-old female teacher at a high school in Mie Prefecture, who was summarily dismissed for seducing a student.

Encouraged by a pledge of full confidentiality, several female teachers agreed to discuss their own situations at school.

"I'm not trying to justify such behavior or make excuses," says one, a teacher at a public middle school in Tokyo. "But it's easy to start feeling attracted to them. Today's boys grow up fast, and I can feel them undressing me with their eyes.

"Teachers these days are really overworked," she continues, "and the more serious and dedicated the person, the less time she will have for herself. In many cases we have to work on weekends, so have little time for dating or socializing. As the stress builds up, some women feel a strong sexual urge. And at schools full of young guys, they are surrounded by temptations."

"When fatigued, I feel beset by all sorts of urges, and to be honest, those young guys appeal to me more than the male teachers at the school," admits an attractive math teacher at a Kanagawa prefectural high school

Teachers who give one-on-one lessons in such disciplines as music, art or home economics seem to be in the best position to milk the situation to their advantage. One, a piano teacher in her 30s, admits to getting a perverse thrill out of teasing adolescent boys.

"Many are hoping to apply to music schools," she says. "During a private lesson, while they're sitting on the stool, I will 'accidentally' nudge their shoulder with my breast, and I see them stiffen --- in more places than one," she winks. Police and prosecutors say she had a four-week affair with a 16-year-old student. Kristen Margrif of Mayville faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on seven counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. She is free on a $45,000 personal recognizance bond until her next court appearance is August 22nd. Authorities say Margrif met the student for sex in June and July in her car and at the teen's summer job. Margrif is a four-year employee of Kingston Community Schools. The student will enter either eighth or ninth grade in the fall.

But few know about the graphic photos police took of the former Greco Middle School teacher. On Tuesday, Lafave's attorney filed a motion to block public access to six photos taken of her last year, saying officers violated Lafave's constitutional right to privacy when they shot close-ups of her genitals.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne S. Timmerman is scheduled to hear the motion next week.

"We don't believe that the search warrant issued by the judge authorized them to do this," said John Fitzgibbons, Lafave's attorney. "At this point, anybody could literally go into the State Attorney's Office, get copies of these photographs, put them on the Internet, and the world would have access to them."

There's been no shortage of public interest in Lafave's case since she was arrested in front of her former student's Temple Terrace home on June 21, 2004. The teenage boy told police he had sex with Lafave, 25, on three occasions.

Questioned by detectives a week before Lafave's arrest on charges of lewd and lascivious battery, the boy told them things about his teacher that only intimate contact would have revealed. He mentioned belly button rings and butterfly tattoos. Then he told them about Lafave's "V" shaped tan line along her waist and that she had shaved her pubic area in a "unique" pattern.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Michelle Sisco issued a search warrant last year authorizing Temple Terrace investigators to collect evidence that would verify the victim's account. When detectives brought Lafave to the county jail, they told her they had a warrant to photograph her body, according to the motion filed Tuesday.

A nurse draped a sheet over Lafave and a female jailhouse deputy snapped four pictures of her hips, legs and back. Then they placed Lafave's feet in stirrups and took two close-up photos of her genitals that Fitzgibbons described as "pornographic."

When they tried to take pictures of Lafave's breasts, she refused, Fitzgibbons said.

"They didn't need to do it this way," he said. "It's just outrageous."

Under Florida's public records laws, any citizen can request access to the Lafave photos.

How long can it possibly take until there is net access for one and all? An eager public demands it!

Florida's public records law (and generally, the open government laws (the Sunshine Law)) is one of the nation's most liberal public records laws. Pretty much anything that is created by or for a governmental agency is available for inspection for free (unless it costs money to gather), and copies are available for a fee, unless the documents fit under specific exemptions found in s. 119.07 or in various specific statutes through Florida law. Investigative information, identifying information as to crime victims, law enforcement addresses, SSNs of people who are required by law to provide that kind of information, etc., are all exempted. But otherwise, most everything is fair game.

In fact, we're able to use it as an advantage in discovery when we're in litigation with a state agency, because we aren't bound by the "reasonably calculated to lead to admissible evidence" standard if we just request information through a public records request, as opposed to a Request for Production of Documents through the court.

Typically, what happens is if a state agency has documents that are being requested, and someone has indicated that they believe the documents are exempt or otherwise confidential, the agency will notify the interested person(s) of the request for the documents, and in some form or fashion, the issue will end up in court, with the agency and the person asserting confidentiality on side and the requestor on the other, and the agency will usually tell the judge they don't care which way the judge rules, they just want to comply with state law.

Regardless of how the criminal element of this comes out, there may be another fight when reporters start asking for copies of the pictures. Maybe the judge will address all of that in his order. I'm not clear on how the criminal part of this affects the ability to copy public records.

Woman Admits Lengthy Sexual 'Relationship' With 8-Year-Old

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A 30-year woman admitted in court Monday that she had a lengthy sexual relationship with an 8-year-old neighbor whom police say she considered a fantasy boyfriend.

In a deal with prosecutors, Tammy Imre pleaded guilty to a charge of risk of injury to a minor. She faces six years in prison when she is sentenced Nov. 4.

Imre was arrested last November on sexual assault charges after the boy's mother found a letter Imre allegedly had written to him, police said.

In the letter, police said Imre told the boy that she doesn't "want anyone but you. Now tomorrow it's supposed to rain, you can come over we can (you know what). Love ya! I want you!"

Police said the boy, the playmate of Imre's 7-year-old daughter, initially denied doing anything with Imre because he feared getting into trouble. When confronted, police said Imre acknowledged engaging in sexual acts with the boy.

According to the arrest affidavit, she told investigators she considered the relationship "like a fantasy and she was the girlfriend and he was the boyfriend."

Defense attorney Donald Papcsy said Imre suffers from a mental problem that made it hard for her to admit that what she did was wrong.

"She really believed she was in a fantasy relationship," Papcsy said.

The family of the young boy agreed to the plea deal, saying they wanted to spare him and Imre's daughter a lengthy trial in which the children would have to testify.

"This was a big step forward for the family," said George Ganim, the attorney for the victim's family.

Teacher sex-with-student allegation is investigated

HAMILTON - Police are investigating allegations that a female teacher at a township high school engaged in a sex act with a 17-year-old male student during the summer at the teacher's home in Bucks County, Pa., police and school officials confirmed yesterday.

Criminal charges had not been filed in New Jersey or Pennsylvania against the Nottingham High School teacher as of yesterday, officials said.

The teacher's name - obtained by The Times and subsequently confirmed by law enforcement sources - is being withheld pending a determination by authorities on the veracity of the allegations.

Hamilton police yesterday confirmed they began an investigation Tuesday evening after being notified of allegations that a "sexual assault" had taken place between a Nottingham High School teacher and a student.

Hamilton detectives interviewed the 17-year-old male. A source said the teen confirmed a sexual act had taken place, but maintained it was consensual and occurred over the summer at the teacher's Middletown, Pa., home.

Despite the boy's assertion the alleged act was consensual, it would be illegal in New Jersey because of the teacher's position of authority over the boy, the source said.

As a result, Hamilton detectives notified the police in Middletown.

Hamilton Detective Lt. James Kostoplis last night declined to comment on the alleged incident and referred all media calls to the Middletown police.

A spokesman for the Middletown police did not immediately return messages from The Times.

Officials with the Mercer County Prosecutors Office confirmed the office had been notified of the Hamilton police investigation and was monitoring it. But they said the prosecutor's office's involvement in the case ended when the probe was turned over to Bucks County authorities after it was learned the incident in question allegedly occurred in Pennsylvania.

Hamilton school board President Joy E. Tozzi last night said the district was aware of the allegations but said no action will be taken until authorities complete their investigation.

She declined to comment whether the teacher had been reassigned or suspended.

Tozzi said she spoke about the allegations Wednesday with Superintendent of Schools Neil A. Bencivengo. Typically, all such allegations are referred to the township police and the state Division of Youth and Family Services, she said.

The district's policy is to take no action on criminal allegations until the outcome of the police investigation is known, she said.

Tozzi said she would not comment on details of the current allegation because it is a personnel matter.

"It would be improper for me to comment any further," she said.

Shelby Shelton is accused of abusing a female student from 1996 to 1998. She was a teacher at Beverley Manor Middle School in the mid 90's. Two charges of indecent liberties have been dropped, but two charges of carnal knowledge are now certified. Shelton was arrested in California back in June.

SHERIDAN, Ore. - A female Sheridan high school teacher has been charged with sex abuse with a 15-year-old male student.

Adrienne Raymond, 38, was charged Friday with six counts of sex abuse following a short initial investigation of Sheridan.

Raymond is a teacher at Sheridan high school and a mother of two children. Investigators with the Yamhill County Sheriffs' Office say the sexual contact did not take place at the school.

The principal of the school says Raymond is now on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

A 'safe room' has been set up in the school and counselors have been called in to talk to students and parents about the incident. A deputy said the incidents took place at the teacher's home

Her attorney entered the plea on her behalf and waived her right to an arraignment Tuesday.

Harrell cut her wrists with broken glass in front of her class at Holley Elementary School, according to the indictment.

Authorities also say she performed oral sex on a 9-year-old boy in her classroom, let students peek down her blouse and talked to some of the children about sexual matters.

Between August 2004 and May, authorities claim she abused a total of 7 students. She has resigned from the school.

If convicted on all charges, she could receive maximum sentences ranging up to hundreds of years, prosecutors said.

SYLVESTER, Ga. (AP) -- A third grade teacher who slit her wrist in front of her class has been arrested on suspicion of molesting a student, police said.

Georgianne Harrell, 24, apparently used a piece of broken glass to cut open one of her wrists in front of 21 pupils in her class on May 4, said Sylvester Police Chief Tony Strenth.

“I don’t know if it was a cry for help or she was just trying to scare them or what,” Strenth said. He said the cut drew blood but wasn’t deep and didn’t require stitches.

As police investigated the incident, a boy in her Holley Elementary School class told authorities about two molestation incidents that happened this school year, Strenth said. He would not elaborate on what the boy said happened.

Harrell was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation. She remained in Worth County Jail Wednesday and had not talked to police on advice of her lawyer, Strenth said.

Police still aren’t sure what to charge Harrell with for the wrist-slitting. She resigned from her teaching job last week.

“We’re still trying to figure that out,” Strenth said. “We could have 21 victims here.”

Superintendent Gary Russell described Harrell as “popular with the kids” and said the school district had no prior problems with her employment.

Counselors have been brought in to the class, and the students have a new teacher, he said.

“It’s just an unfortunate situation. Hopefully we’re going to get through it,” Russell said.

Sylvester is about 20 miles east of Albany in south Georgia.

LECANTO -- A Citrus County high school teacher and former coach has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student, authorities said.

Amy Gail Lilley, 36, was released from Citrus County Jail on Wednesday morning after posting $5,000 bail. She is charged with one count of lewd and lascivious battery on a child stemming from her alleged relationship with the girl.

The day before Lilley's arrest Tuesday, a female Tampa teacher and girls basketball coach, Jaymee Lane Wallace, 28, was charged with having an 18-month relationship with a female student.

Lilley's alleged victim told school officials Monday that she and the teacher were in love and had sex several times since September, a sheriff's office report said.

Lilley first denied there was a sexual relationship, then admitted it, the report said.

The report said she lives in Crystal River, but her telephone number has been disconnected. Information about her legal representation was not immediately available.

Citrus County school officials said Lilley has been put on paid administrative leave pending completion of the sheriff's investigation. Lilley's personnel file shows she graduated from Lecanto High in 1987 and went to work there as a business education teacher in 1993. She also coached girls softball at the school.

Tampa, Florida - The news came as a shock to students at Tampa’s Wharton High School. Math teacher and Basketball Coach, Jaymee Wallace, was arrested and charged with having a sexual affair with a female student.

Laura McElroy, Tampa Police:
"This woman used her position as a coach and as a trusted teacher to gain more access to the female victim."

Police say the student-teacher affair went on for 19 months and began back in December of 2002. The police report says that the victim described the relationship with Coach Wallace as sexual in nature. According to the report, the victim told Coach Wallace that she wanted to be with her for a very long time.

Wallace is no longer teaching in the classroom. The district pulled her out after learning of the allegations. Wallace is now assigned to an office job outside of the school.

Tampa Bay’s 10 News tried to contact Wallace at her home, but no one answered the door. She bonded out of the Hillsborough County jail last night. The female victim now goes to another school.

Police say the more than 50 sexual encounters took place in the Wallace’s car and in her apartment. The report also says that Wallace routinely picked up the students at their homes at all hours of the day and night to take them places. Parents got alarmed and reported the excessive out of school contact to the school district, which in turn alerted police after learning of an alleged sexual relationship.
