Minor hiccups aside post major skill tree rework, I'm back up and running Path of Exile. I got my ranger through normal and kind of pumped to play some other builds as well. There's three of them I want to try out. One being a physical wanderer. A planned out a build just before I took a break and then came back to see people posting some builds that are very similar to what I was coming up with so it is nice to see I was close. An experimental build since nobody is talking about a couple of skills so I figured I would try to build around them and see if why nobody talks about them is do to them sucking. It is basically ranged weapon totem, lesser multiple projectiles, pierce, and chance to flee. Piece by itself isn't impressive unless something starts to run. Add in chance to flee and a bunch of said arrows, and I'm guessing it might work out well enough. Go dual totem with some summoning in there and it is the idea that you basically toss enough stuff at the AI that is doesn't know what to do with you. Last is a melee character I have planned out based on a Thor like theme. I play my ranged characters so much like melee guys with herding and such I figure I might as well actually play the tank type. I need to fit in a Shadow in there as well.

Shadowrun was awesome. Well worth the $20. Hopefully some nice user generated content makes it out there - I opened up the editor and jebus does it need a UI. We'll see if I ever get around to trying it for real...my coding skills need a brush up anyway, and that would be a fun little project.

I still have the disc for that one. I wonder if it will try to use the Glide driver for nVidia cards.

Another note on this, if it looks interesting to you check out Gone Home which came out yesterday to rave reviews. In it you play a character who returns home after a year abroad only to find the house empty with a note on the front door and you discover what has happened by exploring the house.

Disappointing week for board game releases on PC, first a Settlers of Catan game with no online multiplayer comes out and now it looks like Space Hulk is terrible.

From what I've heard about it it's basically Skylanders but with Disney characters so kids are probably going to go fucking crazy for it.

I've heard good things about Skylanders but have never played it. My kids have been too young until now. Plus the Disney aspect is likely more interesting to my daughter.

Picked up the Starter pack and Sidekick pack of Disney Infinite at Best Buy. I grabbed the last PS3 copy at Best Buy. Cashier said they were selling really well. Can't wait to give it a spin this evening with the kids.

Finally fired up XCom (on 360) again last night, first time in months.

Started fresh since it'd been so long I was still relearning/trying to remember almost everything, and I think I've figured out what sorta feels off to me about the game.

On regular difficulty, it just feels rushed to me somehow. Since I basically try to just play with what makes sense to me rather than look up some of the (I guess) perfect strategies & whatnot ... you know the clock is ticking, you know that country's are gonna be getting pissed, you know (if you're me anyway) that you're probably going to get your ass handed to you sooner rather than later.

But there's just some immersion missing for me somewhere. There's such a sense of "need this, need that, gotta figure out what you'll sacrifice" etc that my brain nor my emotions ever really settle in long enough to feel vested.

I think, just personally, I would have preferred twice the missions gaining half the benefits (and half the pace of the aliens intensifying/improving), just so I could play long enough to actually get into the game.

If you downloaded the second wave DLC(it's free) there is a marathon option when you are creating a new game.

Dual Claw Ranger in PoE ended up being a nice counter to my two main ranged builds. I blew through level 1-21 in record time. A couple nice drops really helped though. I still need to work on some other melee guys, but this for now works.

This looks potentially amazeballs, but with this premise, the writing needs to be exceptional and the universe immersive or it'll be a disappointment.

Destructoid seems to have accidentally broken the embargo on The Bureau: XCOM Declassified reviews putting up a review and then pulling it down. There is a cached version up though and it doesn't look good.

Quote:
The story is, to put it nicely, as boring as boring can get, and large sections of dialog make very little sense. Carter is little more than an outdated archetype, a grumbling misery with a store-bought tragic past and nothing remotely likable about him. His supporting cast are possessed of even less personality, while the Outsiders themselves are only slightly more compelling. The game pitifully attempts to throw dialog options to try and spice things up, but they are half-heartedly implemented in such a way that, in one scene, a hostile character devoted to his cause suddenly changes his mind after one or two sentences.

...

The campaign itself is surprisingly shallow, with only a handful of optional messages and very limited customization options spread across an eight hour game that features almost as much back-and-forth walking between NPCs as it does actual combat. Though the game entices with a map of the United States, littered with hotspots and the promise of a strategic romp to take back the nation, the reality is an eight hour, fairly linear jaunt through repetitive missions with a handful of bonus stages. It would appear the groundwork was in place for something much more expansive and involved, but such things were abandoned for one reason or another.

...

When this game was a first-person shooter titled simply, XCOM, a bold and definitive statement was made. It was a statement that drew intense backlash from series fans, and even though 2K Games won back player trust with the release of Enemy Unknown, the damage had already been done to its nerves. After years of troubled development that saw several major overhauls to the game, it's actually impressive that The Bureau isn't far worse than it is. That it's at least playable and more than four hours long is remarkable, but that is the only noteworthy thing about it.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified desperately wants to be liked, but by failing to satisfy in any direction, all it succeeds in being is a disappointment. It wants to be a strategy game without being a strategy game, it wants to be a shooter without being a shooter, and it wants to be XCOM without being XCOM. As such, it is nothing. It's an inconsequential waste of time that does nothing for anybody, and saying that makes me feel guilty because its cloying pleas to not be hated are worthy of pity.

I feel like I've kicked a puppy that just wanted to be my friend, but it really was a crap puppy.

4.5/10

One more thing from the review of The Bureau review, I've seen some bad situations of two things being bound to the same key but The Bureau having reload and pick up weapon being on the same key sounds incredibly terrible. If there's no option to bind them to separate keys that could be worse than Mass Effect with sprint and cover.

We put in about four hours. My six year old loved it. Played the Monsters U playset quite a bit. It's got lots of little missions that they can complete to level up. She also loved just walking around, picking up characters, and throwing them across the play area. I'm actually moving the PS3 into her room once the PS4 comes out, so I'm sure she'll get a ton of gameplay out of it.

We did have some issues with the freeze bug that they've had with the PS3 version. My three year old switched characters mid-game which caused the freeze up. Nothing like explaining to a toddler what a 'bug' is, though the fact that I was able to reference Penelope in 'Wreck it Ralph' as a 'bug' seemed to calm them down. Told them we'll have to wait a couple days to play again when they release the patch.

While it wouldn't need to be a Ranger, my Dual Claws Ranger is as close to City of Heroes scrapperlock as I have seen. My deaths while completing Normal can be summed up in me being stupid, or me trying to test the limits of the build.

So, who here is getting a payout from the EA Sports litigation? It looks like I'm going to get $100 or more.. last I heard in July someone was appealing it due to the attorney's fees, but I see the latest note on the site is that the appeal was dismissed and disbursements will be out soon (there's so few claims that they're offering $20 per Sixth Gen game you bought (PS2/Xbox) and $6 per 7th Gen (PS3/360)

More info on XCom DLC.

XCOM DLC News: ‘Enemy Within’ Releases Nov. 12 And Gives Fans Everything We Wanted [VIDEO] - International Digital Times
Quote:
Now some numbers on XCOM: Enemy Unknown. There will be 40 new maps added to the game (currently there are 80 in single player mode). Eight new multiplayer maps will also be added. Retail cost? XCOM: Enemy Within will be a $30 expansion for PC users (no word on an iOS version or Mac support, but cross your fingers). For console gamers, XCOM: Enemy Within will be a $40 standalone game on Xbox 360 and PS3. It's almost the cost of a brand new game, sure, but mainly because it basically IS a whole new game. We get 50 percent more maps, a new soldier class, tons of new weapons, tech and tweaks and Meld, whatever that is.
