Outlook: I expected this team to perform much better than they did. The good news is they return 4 starters. The bad news is their new players aren't very good. PG Murray is the best incoming player, and he's a walk-on who is suspended. Their best Post defender PF Stevens (62/A) will be taking a shirt this year. I don't have high hopes for a much better season.

Outlook: What the Bucs needed this season was someone who could create some offense. And they really didn't get it. Walker Tuggle is the highest rated of the FOFC recruits, but won't immediately help with what they need. I look more to C Joe Fisher, a ** recruit who has a bit of an inside game and is a solid rebounder. My guess is another season of ugly basketball with a few surprise upsets sprinkled in.

Outlook: Last season's best FOFC team made some solid additions. Thielen and Swett should be able to contribute immediately. They also have a very young team and will certainly return all 5 starters next season. The missed opportunity is a big man with offensive skills. Harris scored 15 ppg last season due solely to quickness. A C/PF with some INS would be hard to stop.

January Update

Hartford (7-7, 2-0), RPI: 98th

The Hawks had an uneven start to the season, with a nice win against Rutgers and a terrible loss to Delaware State. The good news is ending the month with two conference wins. Pace continues his excellence with 16.2 ppg and Tibbets adds 12.7 ppg off the bench.

Kennesaw State (4-10, 0-0), RPI: 226th

After starting off 4-2, the Owls have dropped 8 straight games, although a few were against tough competition. In fact, they came very close to beating #11 Virginia, holding a 14 pt halftime lead only to fall apart in the final minute. As expected, Octavio Jones has been great so far, with 16.9 ppg and 4.3 rpg.

Not a good start for the Vikings, but they have played a tough schedule. Hopefully, they can take advantage of the easier conference schedule. Gravely leads the way with 13.7 ppg.

Charleston Southern (5-7, 3-1), RPI: 133rd

The defense hasn't been quite as good as last season, but maybe that'll change with conference play. Charleston Southern broke a 5 game losing streak to win 3 consecutive conference games. Freshman PF Fisher has performed well, with 7.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg.

Note: I realize that I never clarified what happens if a team makes the First Four. Since that is the situation Lamar is in right now, here's how it will be handled:

1) Making the field of 68 will qualify for unlocking the 2nd skill.
2) The 3rd skill will only be unlocked with a victory in the round of 64.

The 2nd rule is so teams don't get punished for being a little bit better and getting a 15 seed.

Having said all of that, Chas in Cinti may now pick a 2nd skill. It will be applied at the start of next season.

Along with Jones, they return solid PG Hoover and have two exciting new recruits. SG Ducourouble (another JUCO find) is even better than Jones, and Freshman SF Sims should be able to contribute immediately. They still lack big men in the middle, but they should put up a ton of points this season.

Outlook: The Vikings made a nice run at the end of the year, showing some promise after dismal early results. And they may have finally got the player they've been looking for in PF Lonny Locke, a versatile scorer who can play defense and handle the ball. I hope they move him to SF. It'll be interesting to see if they let PG Antione Mauney play. Despite being a walk-on, he's their best PG, but only played in one game after last season's suspension. Mauney and Locke could provide the turnaround that Portland State needs.

Since that is the situation Lamar is in right now, here's how it will be handled: 1) Making the field of 68 will qualify for unlocking the 2nd skill. 2) The 3rd skill will only be unlocked with a victory in the round of 64. The 2nd rule is so teams don't get punished for being a little bit better and getting a 15 seed. Having said all of that, Chas in Cinti may now pick a 2nd skill.
