Ok, time for the second half of the season. Still 13 of the 14 teams realistically in contention.

No-Hitter!!

Sunday, July 24th, 2044: Correa Brilliant -- Fires No-Hitter
Carlos Correa was untouchable today at Charm Ballpark, displaying a good fastball, a wicked curve and an unhittable change in his 10-0 win against the Apex Assassins. The Baltimore hurler did not allow a single hit, fanning 4 while walking 3 and entering the record books.

"Hey, this is great," Correa told reporters after the game. "Every pitcher wants a no-hitter. This is nice, but I just want to win. The no-hitter is just a little extra icing on the victory cake."

This season Correa has a 6-4 record with a 3.97 ERA in 24 starts.

Sunday, July 31st, 2044: Razor-Sharp Rodgers Blanks Baltimore
Everything clicked on the hill today for John Rodgers of the Edmonton Edge as he hurled his club to a 11-0 shutout win over the Baltimore Charm, limiting them to 4 hits while recording 11 strikeouts and yielding 2 walks. He overpowered some batters with his fastball and buckled knees with his sharp breaking pitches.

"We had our shot at him a couple of different times," the Charm manager said, "but we weren't able to get to him."

His record in 2044 is 14-7 in 26 starts and Rodgers has a 3.27 ERA.

Monday, August 1st, 2044: Republic League Names #1 Pitcher in July
Alastair Coggins nailed down July's Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on New York to get a deal done before the 28-year-old becomes a free agent.

Coggins seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 5-0 record, reeled off 23 strikeouts, worked 39.2 innings and held batters to a .252 average for the month as he posted a 2.50 ERA.

In 21 starts this year Coggins has posted 8 wins while suffering 8 losses. He has pitched 143 innings, allowed 153 hits, struck out 83 and has a 4.03 ERA.

Monday, August 1st, 2044: CL Top Pitcher in July - Moya
The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Albert Moya of Edmonton for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," Moya told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the Edmonton starter notched a 4-1 record with a 1.42 ERA last month. He made 7 starts and struck out 36 in 50.2 innings.

This year Moya has a 14-5 record and a 2.72 ERA.

Wednesday, August 10th, 2044: Rodgers Shuts out Boston
He didn't put a spell on them. It wasn't black magic, it was just old-fashioned good pitching. That's how John Rodgers of the Edmonton Edge blanked the Boston Settlers 5-0.

After tossing a complete-game 3-hit shutout, he was all smiles, saying, "I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game. I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."

His own skipper said, "He's at his best when he gets ahead of the hitters." Rodgers walked 1 and struck out 8 in the victory.

The Settlers manager commented on their lack of success against him, saying, "He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes."

In 28 starts this season Rodgers has notched a 15-7 record and a 3.09 ERA.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2044: Aitken Pitches Tokyo to Shutout Victory
All went well for Jeremy Aitken of the Tokyo Cyclones as he pitched his team to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Napa Valley Winemakers, limiting them to 4 hits while ringing up 11 strikeouts and surrendering 1 walk.

In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Aitken.

His manager described him this way: "He's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy. He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."

The Napa Valley skipper said, "He doesn't give you anything twice. It's a guessing game with him and today my club was always guessing wrong."

In the 2044 season Aitken has 14 wins and 9 losses and a 3.28 ERA.

Monday, August 22nd, 2044: Gonzáles Twirls Assassins to Shutout Win
Cristo Gonzáles of the Apex Assassins was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Napa Valley Winemakers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 3-0 shutout.

In the postgame comments, the Napa Valley skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Apex hurler had 11 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.

Gonzáles told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."

This year Gonzáles has gone 12-8 with an ERA of 2.88 and has 112 strikeouts in 178 innings.

Saturday, September 17th, 2044: Chávez Finally Fails, Streak Ends at 29
His 29-game hitting streak is over. Roberto Chávez failed to get a hit today against the Hartford Harpooners and had his consecutive-game hitting streak broken. The 26-year-old Hooligans right fielder went 0-for-3 in his club's 3-2 victory over the Hartford at Ballpark of Hammersmith.

This season Chávez is batting .357 with 37 home runs. He has scored 129 runs and driven in 132.

Wednesday, September 21st, 2044: Venagas Smacks 3 Out of the Park
Regardless of where you stand on the "hardest thing to do in sports" argument, one thing everyone can agree on, is that hitting three home runs in one game is quite an amazing feat. That's exactly what António Venagas did today at Ballpark of Colorado. He went deep three times and carried his team to victory in the Colorado Rancheros 12-4 win over Hyannis.

"It all came together. I was seeing the ball well and I got some good pitches to hit," Venagas said. "Good things happen, when that happens."

He blistered the Patriots for 3 hits, batted in 6 runs and scored 3 times.

The Hyannis skipper said, "It ain't like we weren't trying. He was hot and really torched my boys today."

A. Venagas hit a solo-shot off J. Shaw in the 2nd, hit a three-run home run off J. Shaw in the 3rd, grounded out in the 4th, flied out in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off J. De La Cruz in the 8th.

Thus far this season Venagas has hit .275 with 35 home runs, 114 RBIs and scored 95 times.

Tuesday, September 27th, 2044: 300 Homers for Pichette
Hammersmith defeated New York today 11-9 and took some of the joy out of Gaël Pichette's 300th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Pichette said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 27-year-old Heroes first baseman. He had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 3 runs batted in.

The Hooligans manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

Over his career Pichette is batting .322 with 306 doubles, 5 triples, 300 home runs, 1020 RBIs and scored 752 runs in 1119 games.

Saturday, October 1st, 2044: Hammersmith Starter Named RL's #1 Pitcher
It was a sensational September for Jason Holmes as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Holmes locked down a 4-0 mark in 5 starts last month, striking out 35 while walking 7 in 38 innings and posting a 1.42 ERA.

This year Holmes has a 24-2 record with a 2.11 ERA in 30 starts.

Saturday, October 1st, 2044: September's Best CL Hurler is Caulfield
The Apex Assassins owe Arnie Caulfield a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in September, Caulfield tore up the opposition with a fine 5-0 mark on his way to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Caulfield, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Caulfield who did the banging in September as he tossed up 31 strikeouts in 43 innings, holding opponents to a .237 average and posting a 1.47 ERA.

In 31 starts this season Caulfield has chalked up a 16-8 record and a 3.17 ERA.

This year García is batting .299 with 168 hits and 43 home runs. He has scored 94 times and has batted in 138 runs.

Saturday, October 1st, 2044: Hyannis Left Fielder September's Top Rookie
The Republic League Rookie of the Month Award for September goes to Nick Chaney, the left fielder for Hyannis. He took the league by storm, hitting .387 and looks like he might just be a legitimate contender for the Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award.

Chaney tagged 41 hits in 106 at-bats, including no home runs, produced 13 RBIs and scored 18 times.

Thus far in 2044 Chaney is batting .309 with 8 home runs, 83 RBIs and 97 runs scored.

Saturday, October 1st, 2044: Pagán Gets CL Rookie of Month Honors
Almost everyone agreed -- fans, teammates, peers -- and BNN sportwriters, too -- that Manuel Pagán was worthy of the Continental League Rookie of the Month award.

In the month of September the Tokyo right fielder was a bigtime threat. The 25-year-old Tokyo right fielder played in 26 games and hit .278 with 6 doubles, 1 triple and 3 home runs. Pagán also scored 24 times and drove in 8 runs.

In his stats this season, Pagán has posted a batting average of .293 with 180 hits in 615 at-bats, 10 home runs and 60 RBIs. He has also scored 109 runs, walked 71 times and compiled a .369 OBP.
