Week 7 Vermont- 54, St. Johns- 50 MD Eastern Shore- 62, Missouri St.- 57 Duke- 84, Cal St. Northridge- 70 Kyree Jones had a 16 point, 8 rebound effort to lead MD Eastern Shore to their first win of the tournament, while St. Johns continues to shoot themselves in the foot at the free throw line. They were just 8-21 from the line, good for 38.1%. Apparently they don't comprehend the FREE in free throw. And our key game saw Duke handle Northridge with ease. That big time defense just wasn't there tonight.. but then again there is a far cry between Duke and St. Johns in this tournament. Week 8 Duke- 77, Missouri St.- 62 Cal St. Northridge- 68, Vermont- 58 St. Johns- 75, MD Eastern Shore- 64 The battle for second place was a doozy for a while, but Northridge scored the last 8 points of the game to take control of the 2 spot. Mason Plumlee had a 13 point, 11 rebound performance to lead Duke to a fairly easy victory. And the Johnnies bolted to a 19-1 start to handle MD Eastern Shore. Week 9 Cal St. Northridge- 74, MD Eastern Shore- 57 St. Johns- 66, Missouri St.- 62 (OT) Duke- 62, Vermont- 56 Too little too late for St. Johns who is finally starting to pick it up late. Duke led by 12 with a minute and a half to go and had to hold off a furious rally. ------------------------------ Here are the standings after week 9: Duke 9-0 (+98) Cal St. Northridge 7-2 (+90) Vermont 5-4 (+33) St. Johns 3-6 (-63) Missouri St. 2-7 (-64) MD Eastern Shore 1-8 (-94) Week 10 Schedule: Duke @ St. Johns MD Eastern Shore @ Vermont Missouri St. @ Cal St. Northridge Everything in this group is already decided. Duke will be the group winner and will be playing for an undefeated run in group play. Cal St. Northridge, even with a loss, will finish second. And Vermont will finish third no matter what. Duke and Northridge are playing to solidify their seeds in the round of 128, and Vermont will be playing to try and boost their at-large chances, which could be slim already. |

Week 10 Duke- 67, St. Johns- 61 Vermont- 60, MD Eastern Shore- 50 Cal St. Northridge- 68, Missouri St.- 60 I'm very glad to see the bottom 3 teams in the group not just roll over to the top 3 teams. All the games were close all the way through. Vermont was tied at halftime with MD Eastern Shore. What could have been a very boring, blah, week 10 with everything already decided was turned into an exciting week with 3 tight games. --------------------- Final Group 2 Standings #1 Duke 10-0 (+104) #2 Cal St. Northridge 8-2 (+98) #3 Vermont 6-4 (+43) #4 St. Johns 3-7 (-69) #5 Missouri St. 2-8 (-72) #6 MD Eastern Shore 1-9 (-104) Duke becomes the first team to go undefeated in group play, although it is very early in the tournament. You would think this would solidify a top 5 seed in the round of 128, but with 56 groups still to go, anything can happen. Not to mention everybody played Duke close, their average margin of victory was only 10.8 points. Not very sharp for the #2 ranked team in the entire tournament. Cal St. Northridge becomes the second surprise team to move through group play, and sets themselves up for a very nice seed among the second place teams. Vermont will have to have some luck to get a wild-card berth.. I just don't see 6 wins being enough. St. Johns was the most disappointing team in the group, but lets be honest, they were only one game over .500 in the actual 2012-2013 season, so maybe they weren't so disappointing? I vote for overrated. We got about what we expected out of Missouri St. and MD Eastern Shore, and say bye bye to them as well. |

#3 Gonzaga (WCC, 32-3, 16-0) Mercer (Atlantic Sun, 24-12, 14-4) Western Michigan (MAC, 22-13, 10-6) IPFW (Summit, 16-17, 7-9) Rhode Island (Atlantic Sun, 8-21, 3-13) Binghamton (America East, 3-27, 1-15) ------------------------------ Week 1 Gonzaga- 79, Binghamton- 54 Mercer- 64, Rhode Island- 53 IPFW- 71, Western Michigan- 68 Gonzaga only led by 3 at halftime in this opening game, and it looked like they would be in a dogfight. Then they scored the first 15 points of the second half. IPFW led by 13 at half in their game and had to hold on. Week 2 Mercer- 84, Western Michigan- 74 (OT) IPFW- 72, Binghamton- 66 Gonzaga- 78, Rhode Island- 68 That Mercer game was a wild one. Mercer scored 20 points in the 5 minute OT period. Had they kept that pace the whole game they would have scored 160 points! Wow. IPFW again had to hang on late, and Kelly Olynyk had 16 points and 11 boards to lead Gonzaga. Week 3 Gonzaga- 83, IPFW- 79 (2 OT) Western Michigan- 73, Rhode Island- 63 Mercer- 71, Binghamton- 64 Wow what a game! IPFW had 4, count em, 4 chances to win in regulation but just could not get the basketball to go down. Gonzaga stepped up the D in the second OT, holding IPFW to just 2 points and escape with a win. --------------------------- Here are the standings after Week 3: Gonzaga 3-0 (+39) Mercer 3-0 (+28) IPFW 2-1 (+5) Western Michigan 1-2 (-3) Rhode Island 0-3 (-31) Binghamton 0-3 (-38) |

Week 4 Rhode Island- 60, Binghamton- 57 Mercer- 78, IPFW- 62 Gonzaga- 74, Western Michigan- 69 Mercer took care of business, shooting 51% and never trailed once the entire game. Gonzaga needed 22 points from Elias Harris to survive. Week 5 Gonzaga- 73, Mercer- 71 Western Michigan- 66, Binghamton- 51 Rhode Island- 69, IPFW- 53 Mercer led by 9 with 10 minutes to go but couldn't hang on to pull the upset, as Elias Harris saved the Zags again, hitting a lay-up with 1 second left. Mercer's 3/4 court heave fell well short. Andre Malone had 21 points as Rhode Island gets a big win against IPFW. Week 6 Gonzaga- 83, Binghamton- 59 Mercer- 59, Rhode Island- 41 IPFW- 84, Western Michigan- 78 Huge game for Frank Gaines as he scored 26 points in the IPFW win. Mercer and Gonzaga continue to roll. -------------------------------- Standings after Week 6: Gonzaga 6-0 (+70) Mercer 5-1 (+60) IPFW 3-3 (-21) Western Michigan 2-4 (+1) Rhode Island 2-4 (-30) Binghamton 0-6 (-80) |

Week 7 Western Michigan- 75, Mercer- 63 IPFW- 63, Binghamton- 42 Gonzaga- 67, Rhode Island- 54 16 turnovers did Mercer in, as W. Michigan put up some good defensive pressure, especially late in the game. The Zags continue to roll. Week 8 Gonzaga- 69, IPFW- 67 Western Michigan- 68, Rhode Island- 63 (OT) Mercer- 59, Binghamton- 49 Again, Gonzaga has to hang on for their life, and this time Kelly Olynyk was the hero, getting a layup at the buzzer to keep the Zags undefeated. Western Michigan trailed by 12 at halftime but held Rhode Island to 22.5% shooting in the second half to get to OT, where they continue their sparkling defense. Week 9 Rhode Island- 59, Binghamton- 50 Mercer- 74, IPFW- 64 Gonzaga- 74, Western Michigan- 38 Wow, Gonzaga held W. Michigan to 11 points in the second half. An unbelievable defensive performance. For the game W. Michigan shot just 26.9%. Not much else to report this week, some of the teams appear to be going through the motions now. -------------------------------------- Standings after Week 9: Gonzaga 9-0 (+121) Mercer 7-2 (+68) IPFW 4-5 (-12) Western Michigan 4-5 (-18) Rhode Island 3-6 (-39) Binghamton 0-9 (-120) Week 10 Schedule: Gonzaga @ Mercer Binghamton @ Western Michigan IPFW @ Rhode Island Here's what we do know about this group: no matter what happens in the Gonzaga-Mercer game, Gonzaga has won the group and Mercer has finished second. Both teams advance to the round of 128. Not a big surprise but Binghamton is eliminated (and has been since about week 6). Here's what we don't know: who is going to finish 3rd place in this group and move into wildcard contention? If IFPW and Western Michigan both win, then IPFW will get 3rd place due to them beating Western Michigan both games they played. Rhode Island has an outside shot at getting 3rd place.. they have to beat IPFW (which they did convincingly the first time they played) and pray for a Binghamton upset over Western Michigan. That would put all 3 teams at a dismal 4-6. Now, if Rhode Island beats IPFW and W. Michigan beats Binghamton, W. Michigan gets third place. Confused yet? To simplify it, if IPFW wins, they take third no matter what happens with the Binghamton-W. Michigan game. But if IPFW loses, then we may have a situation. My honest opinion is that it doesn't matter.. whoever takes third with a 5-5 (or 4-6) record as the case may be, pretty much has no chance to earn a wildcard berth. |

Week 10 Gonzaga- 64, Mercer- 45 Western Michigan- 65, Binghamton- 46 Rhode Island- 69, IPFW- 59 So Rhode Island does play spoiler, keeping Western Michigan in the tournament temporarily. Gonzaga had no trouble with Mercer. Let's look at the final standings for group 3: #1 Gonzaga 10-0 (+140) #2 Mercer 7-3 (+49) #3 Western Michigan 5-5 (+1) #4 Rhode Island 4-6 (-29) #5 IPFW 4-6 (-22) #6 Binghamton 0-10 (-139) So as expected Gonzaga doesn't have much trouble getting through this tournament. They are the second team to finish undefeated in group play. We know they will be a higher seed than Duke based on point differential, as Duke was only +105. So there's still a chance for the Zags to be the #1 seed in the round of 128. Mercer finishes second but that point differential is way lower than any other team so far that finished second. I look for Mercer to be seeded 100 or lower. Western Michigan takes 3rd place and for right now holds a wildcard spot. They will hold one at least until Group 12 is completed, but with that 5-5 record, don't be surprised if they are bounced from the tournament by Group 13. Rhode Island, due to their sweep over IPFW in their 2 games played, actually finishes higher even though their point differential was worse. And of course Binghamton was Binghamton. |

#4 Kansas (Big 12, 31-6, 14-4) Iona (MAAC, 20-14, 11-7) Kent St. (MAC, 21-14, 9-7) Louisiana Lafayette (Sun Belt, 13-20, 8-12) Loyola Marymount (WCC, 11-23, 1-15) Kennesaw State (Atlantic Sun, 3-27, 2-16) ------------------------------------- Week 1 Kansas- 75, Kennesaw State- 50 Loyola Marymount- 65, Iona- 60 Louisiana-Lafayette- 72, Kent State- 62 33 points from Ionas Lamont Jones wasn't enough as Loyola Marymount pulled the week 1 upset. Elfrid Payton led LA Lafayette with 21 points, 6 boards, and 7 assists in a balanced effort. Kansas had no trouble with Kennesaw St. Week 2 Iona- 73, Kent St.- 58 Louisiana-Lafayette- 68, Kennesaw St.- 59 Kansas- 73, Loyola Marymount- 43 Those darn Jayhawks held Loyola to just 26.8 shooting and led 39-18 at halftime. Meanwhile, Iona took care of business and Kennesaw St. had Lafayette down early but couldn't hang on. Week 3 Kansas- 80, Louisiana-Lafayette- 46 Loyola Marymount- 70, Kent St.- 66 Iona- 93, Kennesaw St.- 62 Sean Armand had 26 and Lamont Jones had 23 as Iona blasted Kennesaw. Kansas rolled over Lafayette in a big way, and Loyola Marymount had to hold off a furious rally to keep Kent St. undefeated. ------------------ Here are the standings after week 3: Kansas 3-0 (+89) Iona 2-1 (+41) Louisiana Lafayette 1-2 (-15) Loyola Marymount 1-2 (-21) Kent St. 0-3 (-29) Kennesaw St. 0-3 (-65) |

Week 4 Loyola Marymount- 60, Kennesaw St.- 46 Iona- 75, Louisiana-Lafayette- 49 Kansas- 87, Kent St.- 62 Ben McLemore led the Jayhawks with 24 points as they continue to dominate. Iona got another 30+ effort from Lamont Jones, as he scored 30 even in this one. That is his second 30+ point effort in 4 games in group play. Week 5 Kansas- 80, Iona- 62 Kent St.- 77. Kennesaw St.- 57 Louisiana-Lafayette- 59, Loyola Marymount- 53 Kansas was tied with Iona at 44 at halftime, then they had lockdown defense in the second half. Despite 16 turnovers, Louisiana-Lafayette was able to hang on and defeat Loyola Marymount. Week 6 Kansas- 66, Kennesaw St.- 42 Loyola Marymount- 57, Iona- 48 Louisiana-Lafayette- 77, Kent St.- 59 Louisiana-Lafayette held Kent St. to just 33.3% shooting as they walloped the Golden Flashes again. Also, Loyola Marymount held Lamont Jones to 22 (a tournament low for him), and shut down the rest of the team. ----------------------------------- Standings after Week 6: Kansas 6-0 (+156) Louisiana-Lafayette- 4-2 (-17) Loyola Marymount 4-2 (-4) Iona 3-3 (+40) Kent St. 1-5 (-52) Kennesaw St. 0-6 (-123) |

Week 7 Iona- 82, Kent St.- 54 Kennesaw St.- 69, Louisiana-Lafayette- 63 Kansas- 72, Loyola Marymount- 67 The big upset is Kennesaw getting their first win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Kennesaw was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the last minute to seal the win. Kansas played by far their closest game of the tournament, as Loyola had as big as an 8 point lead at times. Iona got 30 from Lamont Jones, as that makes 30+ point game #3 for Mr. Jones in the tournament. Week 8 Kansas- 59, Louisiana-Lafayette- 51 Kent St.- 74, Loyola Marymount- 47 Iona- 83, Kennesaw St.- 50 To say that the Jayhawks have put it into cruise control is an understatement. Lafayette led by as many as 15 in the first half and led 28-19 at halftime. Bill Self's halftime speech consisted of words never before heard. I understand thanks to Selfs halftime speech, a new dictionary is in the works. And Kent St.... well can we say too little too late? They finally played the way they should have been playing. Week 9 Loyola Marymount- 57, Kennesaw St.- 43 Iona- 87, Louisiana-Lafayette- 57 Kansas- 71, Kent St.- 56 The shocker in this one is that Lamont Jones scored only 19.. yes, 19 points in Ionas blowout win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Kansas shot 47.4% to get by Kent St. ----------------------------- Standings after Week 9: Kansas 9-0 (+184) Iona 6-3 (+131) Loyola Marymount 5-4 (-22) Louisiana-Lafayette 4-5 (-61) Kent St. 2-7 (-68) Kennesaw St. 1-8 (-164) Week 10 Schedule: Kansas @ Iona Kennesaw St. @ Kent St. Louisiana-Lafayette @ Loyola Marymount Kansas has already clinched the group, and with a win over Iona in Week 10 will have a very, very good chance to get the #1 seed in the round of 128. Iona can really solidify the #2 spot in the group with a win. Loyola Marymount can clinch the third seed in this group with a win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Still a lot to play for in this group, Kent St. and Kennesaw St. are playing for pride. |

Week 10 Kansas- 66, Iona- 51 Kent St.- 71, Kennesaw St.- 62 Loyola Marymount- 60, Louisiana-Lafayette- 42 20% shooting from the three point line doomed Iona in this one, and Anthony Ireland had 22 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists as Loyola Marymount hammered Louisiana-Lafayette. Final Group 4 Standings: #1 Kansas 10-0 (+199) #2 Loyola Marymount 6-4 (-4) #3 Iona 6-4 (+116) #4 Louisiana-Lafayette 4-6 (-79) #5 Kent St. 3-7 (-59) #6 Kennesaw St. 1-9 (-173) Kansas wins the group and has a very good chance to be the #1 seed in the round of 128, especially with that point differential. Loyola Marymount gets second place in the group and an automatic spot in the round of 128 due to the fact that they swept Iona, winning the tiebreaker. But lets be honest, that 6-4 record along with a negative point differential could see Loyola Marymount as a very very low seed. In fact, I could easily see them being seed #116, which would be the lowest possible seed for second place finishers. Iona on the other hand, should have a great chance at a wildcard berth, especially with that high point differential. Kent St. was the most disappointing, I thought for sure they would sneak in and grab that second spot. |

Guys, I've made a decision, at least through group play to get through it faster, to just report on a few games per group. For the most part, it'll just be scores, but I will still highlight a game or 2 in each 3 week post, games that are key or have a really good performance. This should get me through group play a lot quicker, as opposed to giving a wrap-up every single week.
Group 5 #5 Indiana (Big 10, 29-7, 14-4) Dayton (Atlantic Ten, 17-14, 7-9) Canisius (MAAC, 20-14, 11-7) Buffalo (MAC, 14-20, 7-9) Lipscomb (Atlantic Sun, 12-18, 7-11) Lamar (3-28, 1-17) ----------------------------------- Week 1 Indiana- 79, Lamar- 46 Dayton- 77, Lipscomb- 71 Canisius, 73, Buffalo- 67 Week 2 Dayton- 72, Canisius- 70 Lamar- 67, Buffalo- 65 Indiana- 84, Lipscomb- 62 Lamar becomes the earliest #6 seed within a group to get a win, in a game in which neither team had a lead bigger than 6 points. Week 3 Indiana- 88, Buffalo- 60 Canisius- 70, Lipscomb- 47 Dayton- 83, Lamar- 65 Billy Baron was the highlight of the week, as he scored 23 points, had 8 boards, and 7 assists for Canisius in their win over Lipscomb. ------------------------- Standings after Week 3: Indiana 3-0 (+83) Dayton 3-0 (+26) Canisius 2-1 (+27) Lamar 1-2 (-49) Buffalo 0-3 (-36) Lipscomb 0-3 (-51) |

Week 4 Lipscomb- 72, Lamar- 58 Dayton- 74, Buffalo- 73 Indiana- 85, Canisius- 80 Vee Sanford hit a buzzer beat from the free throw line for Dayton in their narrowest of wins, and Indiana struggled a bit, never leading Canisius by more than 12. Week 5 Indiana- 62, Dayton- 60 Canisius- 89, Lamar- 48 Buffalo- 68, Lipscomb- 65 Dayton led Indiana by 4 at halftime but couldn't hang on. Week 6 Indiana- 78, Lamar- 61 Dayton- 71, Lipscomb- 56 Buffalo- 83, Canisius- 75 Javon McCrea had a nice all around game for Buffalo in their win over Canisius. He scored 23 points, had 8 boards, 4 assists, and even added 4 blocks. --------------------------- Standings after Week 6: Indiana 6-0 (+107) Dayton 5-1 (+40) Canisius 3-3 (+55) Buffalo 2-4 (-26) Lipscomb 1-5 (-55) Lamar 1-5 (-121) |

Week 7 Dayton- 68, Canisius- 58 Buffalo- 77, Lamar- 50 Indiana- 72, Lipscomb- 54 Week 8 Indiana- 68, Buffalo- 57 Lipscomb- 74, Canisius- 69 Dayton- 58, Lamar- 56 Lipscomb pulls a mild upset, getting 23 points from Deonte Alexander, and Dayton needed a three pointer at the buzzer from Kevin Dillard to avoid what would have been a huge upset. Week 9 Lamar- 68, Lipscomb- 66 Buffalo- 68, Dayton- 61 Indiana- 85, Canisius- 82 (OT) Buffalo forced 15 turnovers in the upset over Dayton, and a Cody Zeller putback in regulation is the only thing that saved the Hoosiers from their first loss, as we had our first OT game of this group. -------------------------------- Standings after Week 9: Indiana 9-0 (+139) Dayton 7-2 (+45) Buffalo 4-5 (-3) Canisius 3-6 (+37) Lipscomb 2-7 (-70) Lamar 2-7 (-148) Week 10 Schedule: Indiana @ Dayton Lamar @ Canisius Buffalo @ Lipscomb The only thing left in this group that needs to be decided is third place and the potential wildcard berth. Indiana has clinched the group but really needs to beat Dayton convincingly to stay in line for a top seed. Dayton wants to shake things up and knock the Hoosiers into a lower seed by giving them a loss. As far as the third place and possible wildcard spot goes... Buffalo just needs to win or hope for a Canisius loss to get third place, but Buffalo would need a very, very big win to even have a chance at a wildcard. Lamar and Lipscomb both have a chance to get into fourth place, especially Lamar if they can upset Canisius. |

Week 10 Dayton- 74, Indiana- 71 Canisius- 74, Lamar- 52 Buffalo- 78, Lipscomb- 71 Dayton wanted this win and it showed, as they led by as many as 14 and really cruised most of the game. ------------------------------- Final Group 5 Standings #1 Indiana 9-1 (+136) #2 Dayton 8-2 (+48) #3 Buffalo 5-5 (+4) #4 Canisius 4-6 (+59) #5 Lipscomb 2-8 (-77) #6 Lamar 2-8 (-170) Indiana lost a chance to go undefeated and set themselves up for a top 10, maybe even top 5 seed. With a 9-1 record, a top 10 to 15 seed is still very doable. On the other hand, Dayton probably bumped their seed a good 20 notches or so with that win over Indiana. 8-2 looks a lot better than 7-3, especially in the second place group. Buffalo does get the wildcard, and they are actually in a better position than our other 5-5 wildcard contender, as Western Michigan only had a PD of +1. However, I just don't think a 5-5 record will be good enough in the long run to get a wildcard spot. Canisius might be the best 4-6 team we've had, especially with that point differential. Lipscomb and Lamar were touch and go. Although Lamar had more blowout losses, I thought they competed well in several games. |

That seeding is going to hurt Indiana. And I imagine they're one of the best teams on paper from last year.

Week 7 Wright St.- 67, Northeastern- 65 Brown- 61, New Orleans- 51 Miami- 72, N. Florida- 43 Miami held N. Week 8 Miami- 58, Brown- 41 N. Florida- 72, Northeastern- 62 Wright St.- 76, New Orleans- 51 With N. Florida's win over Northeastern, that means Miami has already clinched the Group 6 title, and there is now a major battle for second place. Week 9 N. Florida- 67, New Orleans- 66 Wright St.- 64, Brown- 55 Northeastern- 72, Miami- 66 It took a 27 point effort from N. Florida's Parker Smith to squeak out the victory, however the hero of this game was actually David Jeune, who banked in a three pointer at the buzzer and N. Florida still has hopes of moving on. Meanwhile, Northeastern just outplayed the Hurricanes to give Miami their first loss. Standings after Week 9: Miami 8-1 (+103) Northeastern 6-3 (+40) N. Florida 5-4 (+4) Wright St. 4-5 (+1) Brown 3-6 (-44) New Orleans 1-8 (-104) Week 10 Schedule: Miami @ Wright St. New Orleans @ Northeastern Brown @ N. Florida So we know that Miami has locked up the group 6 championship, but that loss was huge. Wright St. is hot right now, and a second loss for Miami would drop them well down in the seedings for the round of 128. Second place is not quite wrapped up yet. Of course if Northeastern beats New Orleans as we expect they will, then second place will be theirs. But if New Orleans shocks Northeastern and beats them handily, then N. Florida beats Brown handily, N. Florida has a chance to overtake Northeastern for second place. I'd say the chances of that happening are about 0.0000001%. As far as the wildcard, a N. Florida win clinches a top 3 spot for them and their standing would depend on the Northeastern game. But if Wright St. can upset Miami and Brown beats N. Florida, there's a chance Wright St. could fight back to take third place. Simply put.. theres still a lot to play for in Week 10. |

Week 10 Miami- 63, Wright St.- 59 Northeastern- 77, New Orleans- 71 N. Florida- 71, Brown- 66 There were some tense moments in all 3 games this week, but as far as seeding purposes, the teams that needed to win did win. Here are the Final Group 6 Standings: #1 Miami 9-1 (+107) #2 Northeastern 7-3 (+46) #3 N. Florida 6-4 (+9) #4 Wright St. 4-6 (-3) #5 Brown 3-7 (-49) #6 New Orleans 1-9 (-110) The one blemish was that loss to Northeastern, otherwise we could be talking about Miami for a top 10 seed in the round of 128. But like Indiana, that one loss could make a 10 to 15 seed difference in the seedings for the next round. Northeastern also hurt their seed with 2 straight losses late in group play. I'd expect them to be in the 80 to 90 seed range. And N. Florida, with those 2 wins against Wright St., takes third in the group and sets themselves up for a good wildcard possibility. At least with a 6-4 record, you gotta think they have a chance, although if there is a heap of 6-4teams battling for a wildcard spot, that +9 point differential could be a negative factor. Wright St., well we've already covered why they will no longer be playing in this tournament.. the 2 losses to N. Florida. Brown wasn't terrible, neither was New Orleans. But alas, both of them are heading home Last edited by collegesportsfanms : 10-09-2013 at 03:43 PM. |

Week 7 Wagner- 71, George Mason- 67 Pepperdine- 78, Miss. Valley St.- 55 Michigan- 77, Appalachian St.- 65 Kenneth Ortiz had 15 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists for Wagner in a big win over George Mason. Week 8 Michigan- 65, Pepperdine- 56 Appalachian St.- 69, Wagner- 67 George Mason- 64, Miss. Valley St.- 53 Appalachian St. led by 12 at halftime, but couldn't let out that deep breath until Wagner's Marcus Burton missed a three pointer at the buzzer that would have completed the Wagner comeback. Week 9 Appalachian St.- 73, Miss. Valley St.- 59 George Mason- 69, Pepperdine- 63 Michigan- 72, Wagner- 59 Big win by George Mason who now controls their own destiny. Here are the Standings after Week 9: Michigan 9-0 (+112) Pepperdine 5-4 (+25) George Mason 5-4 (+17) Appalachian St. 4-5 (-10) Wagner 4-5 (-25) Miss. Valley St. 0-9 (-119) Week 10 Schedule: Michigan @ George Mason Miss. Valley St. @ Wagner Pepperdine @ Appalachian St. So here's what we know about this group... Michigan has won group 7 and will be playing to be the first undefeated team out of group play since group 4. Miss. Valley was eliminated about, oh.. 4 weeks ago. And we have 4 teams in contention for not only second place, but also a possible wildcard. And oh yes, we could potentially have a situation where all those teams could end up 5-5, which would be an absolute nightmare. Pepperdine is in the best shape to finish second place, but they would need to beat Appalachian St.. Since Pepperdine and George Mason split, if they both finish 6-4, it would come down to point diffential, in which Pepperdine holds the advantage. However, if George Mason can upset Michigan and App. St. can upset Pepperdine, then George Mason can grab the second spot. Way, way too many scenarios to talk about for third place and the possible wildcard. Wagner, on paper, has the easiest match since they have winless Miss. Valley St. |

Week 10 Michigan- 70, George Mason- 58 Wagner- 60, Miss. Valley St.- 56 Pepperdine- 68, App. St.- 57 Had App. St. beat Pepperdine that nightmare situation of 4 teams at 5-5 would have taken place. Final Group 7 Standings: #1 Michigan 10-0 (+123) #2 Pepperdine 6-4 (+36) #3 Wagner 5-5 (-20) #4 George Mason 5-5 (+5) #5 Appalachian St. 4-6 (-21) #6 Miss. Valley St 0-10 (-123) I'll just be honest with you, somewhere along the way the numbers got all screwed up, it took me 3 attempts to get them straight. Therefore, I don't think I'd better try to do anymore groups while I'm at work, as it did get confusing when somebody came in and I had to stop. So the point differentials in weeks 3, 6, and 9 may not be correct, but the final point differentials are. That being said, Michigan won the group going away, making the 4th undefeated team in 7 groups. Their point differential is decent, but it's not among the top. They should be a top 10-15 seed depending on how many other teams finish undefeated. Pepperdine gets second place, but will be behind a lot of 8-2 and 7-3 second place teams. Hard to determine where they will be. Wagner, by virtue of sweeping George Mason, gets third place and the possible wildcard berth. But with a 5-5 record and negative point differential, they won't be in contention long. George Mason losing twice to Wagner hurt their chances, and Appalachian State was only a win away from defying the odds and advances to the round of 128, which would have been totally unexpected. What was expected was Miss. Valley St. finishing last and winless. |

I am pretty much going to speed through group play, as I will just be reporting scores for each week and maybe a quick wrap-up after weeks 3 and 6. The wrap-ups after week 9 and 10 will stay the same, but expect a lot less game reporting and a lot more of just reporting scores through group play. This will allow me to get through group play faster (since I have 58 groups to go through), therefore getting to the more detailed reports for the round of 128. Hope you all are still enjoying this dynasty

Probably a wise decision. This would be a great format if your group play were, say, 16 groups.

SI, the problem lies with having every single college basketball D1 team in this. I probably should have done like I've done in the past, taken the top 128 teams or so.
But.. I am exploring with another idea in my head that would scrap this whole project. While I like the round robin stuff, I am tempted to scrap this project and take 128 teams.. all the teams from the 8 best conferences from 2012 (ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) and then fill the remaining spots with teams that you guys want to see in it. Then have kind of a season with those 128 teams. I don't have the exact format in mind, but I'm thinking it would be a whole lot easier. Since you seem to be the main poster besides me on this topic, I'd like your input Would you like me to finish this project out with basically little to no detail, or would you like me to start over with my idea of 128 teams and make a season out of it? I'm not so sure that both ideas won't take about the same amount of time. What do you think? |

I like the giant tourney, personally.
If I were me, I'd condense weeks 1-6 into one writeup. Note if there are any upsets but provide scores only (unless someone pipes up with teams they want to see). Then do the 7-9 and 10 like before. Or, if that's too much, do 1-8 or 1-9 scores/standings only and then a 9-10 or 10. There's just not a lot of drama in group play. Sometimes that 2nd spot is up for grabs but if it is, it's because it's a giant 5-5 or 6-4 scrum between some mediocre teams. SI

SI, I'm liking the way you are thinking. I'm going to condense weeks 1-5 in one post, which will consist of nothing but scores, with highlights of key upsets (unless of course, as you said, somebody wants certain info on a certain team, in which case they'll have to let me know in advance.)
Then I'll have weeks 6-9, with a recap after week 9 like I have been. Again, this will just be scores and highlighting key upsets and teams that I have been asked to focus on. Then of course week 10 will be the same. I guess all I'm really cutting down on is the number of posts per group, instead of 4 there will be 3. But reporting scores only for the most part will definitely speed up the process. |

Air Force can clinch second place with a win, but it won't be easy as they'll have to knock off Ohio St. Even then they are in good shape to take second as they swept Mississippi St. and split with but have a pretty significantly higher PD over St. Francis (NY). The game of the week has to be St. Francis and Mississippi St. A win for Mississippi St. would give them the sweep over St. Francis, while a win for St. Francis would boost them over Mississippi St. thanks to the point differential that isn't even close. |

Week 10 Ohio St.- 74, Air Force- 64 Princeton- 65. Furman- 37 St. Francis (NY)- 73, Mississippi St.- 69 Group 8 Final Standings: #1 Ohio St. 10-0 (+171) #2 Air Force 5-5 (+17) #3 St. Francis (NY) 5-5 (-8) #4 Princeton 4-6 (+13) #5 Mississippi St. 4-6 (-77) #6 Furman 2-8 (-116) No big surprise, Ohio St. runs through this group, and trail only Kansas as far as point differential goes among the current teams that finished undefeated in group play. Granted there are a lot of groups left, but I'd have to say the Buckeyes have all but clinched a top 5 seed in the round of 128. Air Force gets the #2 spot over St. Francis (NY) due to point differential, as they split their 2 meetings in group play. However, Air Force has the worst record among the second place teams and will most likely be the lowest of the seeds coming out of the second place finishers. St. Francis (NY) will hang around for a while in a potential wildcard chance, but that negative point differential won't see them stay much past the next few groups. Princeton had a higher point differential than Mississippi St., and Furman played spoiler to Air Force by sweeping them and really hurting Air Force's seed in the round of 128. So 8 groups down, 50 to go, what do you all think so far? |

Illinois South Carolina St. @ Nebraska UC Davis @ SE Louisiana Not a lot of drama in this group, as Syracuse has clinched the group title and a very surprising SE Louisiana has clinched the group runner up spot. Nebraska will clinch third place by beating South Carolina St., but if Nebraska loses it will set up a 2 way tie for third, and if Nebraska loses and UC Davis wins, we have a 3 way tie for third. Not that it would matter, as a 3 way tie for third would mean 3 teams at 4-6, and that wouldn't even merit a consideration for a wildcard spot. In other words, the only team that has a slight chance left at getting a wildcard spot is Nebraska, and even that is a slim and none chance. |

Week 10 Syracuse- 65, W. Illinois 2-8 (-56) So Syracuse wins the group a lot easier than I expected them to, and becomes the third team in a row to finish group play undefeated. SE Louisiana is definitely the surprise team, as they were seeded 5th in their group. They are just happy to be in the round of 128. Nebraska is in the wildcard hunt for now, while UC Davis just missed out. W. Illinois had to be the most disappointing team in this group, while South Carolina St. definitely played the best out of all the #6 seeds within group play. |

A Michigan St. victory over St. Joes will give them the group title, but a St. Joes victory will go to a tiebreaker. In that case, it would mean the 2 teams split their 2 games and would go to a second tiebreaker which would be overall point differential. No matter what, E. Michigan is locked into third place in the group, because even if they win and St. Joes loses, St. Joes beat E. Michigan both games, so they have already got that tiebreaker sealed up. E. Michigan is basically playing to boost their wildcard chances which are already quite high. |

St. Josephs gets second due to winning the first tiebreaker, as they swept both games against E. Michigan. They should be a middle of the pack team, with a seeding in between 60-70. E. Week 6 Florida- 66, Presbytarian- 45 Cornell- 81, Pacific- 71 Niagara- 64, N. Dakota- 52 Week 7 Pacific- 77, Niagara- 58 N. Dakota- 63, Presbytarian- 62 (OT) Florida- 71, Cornell- 55 Week 8 Florida- 85, N. Dakota- 72 Niagara- 66, Cornell- 55 Presbytarian- 58, Pacific- 56 Week 9 Cornell- 75, Presbytarian- 65 Pacific- 69, N. Dakota- 57 Florida- 79, Niagara- 58 Standings after Week 9: Florida 8-1 (+102) N. Dakota 6-3 (+11) Pacific 5-4 (+24) Niagara 4-5 (-12) Cornell 3-6 (-41) Presbytarian 1-8 (-84) Week 10 Schedule: Florida @ Pacific Presbytarian @ Niagara N. Dakota @ Cornell Florida has clinched Group 11 and will be playing to better their seeding. With a win, N. Dakota can clinch second place. A Dakota loss combined with a Pacific win would force a tiebreaker for second place. Since both teams won once against each other, we would go to second tiebreaker, which is overall point differential. No matter what, Pacific can do no worse than third, because they swept Niagara, so they own the tiebreaker if Pacific loses and Niagara wins. |

Week 10 Florida- 61, Pacific- 51 Niagara- 69, Presbytarian- 59 N. Dakota- 84, Cornell- 82 (OT) Group 11 Final Standings: #1- Florida 9-1 (+112) #2- N. Dakota 7-3 (+13) #3- Pacific 5-5 (+14) #4- Niagara 5-5 (-2) #5- Cornell 3-7 (-43) #6- Presbytarian 1-9 (-94) There were really a lot of close games in this group, as even the double digit wins weren't as big as some of the games the top teams in other groups have won. Florida wins the group with a 9-1 record, and has a decent PD. They should be good for a top 20 seed. N. Dakota gets second place, helped by 2 narrow OT wins in the last 4 weeks. Their PD for the 7-3 second placed teams is by far the lowest. Pacific clinches third place and is in wildcard contention. They may be helped by the fact that of all the 5-5 teams, as of now their PD is significantly higher than the others.. but there are quite a few 6-4 and 7-3 teams ahead of them already. If they don't get a wildcard berth, you can be sure they will be looking back to that loss at Presbytarian. Niagara loses out on the tiebreaker to Pacific, Cornell was largely disappointing, and as mentioned earlier, Presbytarian may have played spoiler by keeping Pacific out of the round of 128. Also, their PD for last placed teams may be one of the better ones. |

Eastern Michigan will the really impressive showing. Did they have good die rolls or was this one of those teams the sim likes more than their season results?

SI, to answer your question about Eastern Michigan, I think they just had a lot of luck. They got some nice dice rolls definitely, and I do think that maybe the WIS sim likes them a bit better than their season results.

Week 6 New Mexico- 63, N. Illinois- 37 Texas A&M- 63, Holy Cross- 56 TX Arlington- 60, DePaul- 52 Week 7 Texas A&M- 65, TX Arlington- 58 N. Illinois 3-6 (-53) DePaul 2-7 (-38) Week 10 Schedule: New Mexico @ Texas A&M N. Illinois @ TX Arlington DePaul @ Holy Cross Texas A&M has clinched group 12, and New Mexico is fighting for their lives if they want to even advance to the round of 128. If either New Mexico or Holy Cross win, it'll help things a lot. If both lose and TX Arlington wins, then we will have 3 teams at 5-5 and have some tiebreakers to sort out. |

Week 10 Texas A&M- 70, New Mexico- 61 TX Arlington- 59, N. Illinois- 49 DePaul- 82, Holy Cross- 69 Final Group 12 Standings: #1-Texas A&M 9-1 (+81) #2- New Mexico 5-5 (+46) #3- TX Arlington 5-5 (-11) #4- Holy Cross 5-5 (-28) #5- N. Illinois 3-7 (-63) #6- DePaul 3-7 (-25) Texas A&M wins the group convincingly, but their point differential will deny them a top seed, as they have the lowest point differential of the 9-1 teams. New Mexico just barely survived using the points differential as a tiebreaker to get second place. They went 3-1 against TX Arlington and Holy Cross, which was the best record of the teams involved in the 3 team tiebreaker. Holy Cross and TX Arlington split their games, so TX Arlington gets third thanks to the point differential tiebreaker, but 5-5 will not be enough to get a wildcard. Look for them to be eliminated soon. Holy Cross is on the outside looking out. N. Illinois started strong but won just 1 of their last 8 games, and DePaul was a huge disappointment. |

Things will start to get more interesting starting with group 13. We have 12 wildcard spots available and we've played 12 groups, so the initial 12 wildcard spots have been filled. Now we will have a wildcard elimination with every group. That means third place winners from previous groups will be sweating it out to remain in the wildcard hunt.
Here is a look at how the wild card race shapes up after 12 groups. N.C. Central 7-3 (+63) E. Michigan 7-3 (+50) Iona 6-4 (+116) Vermont 6-4 (+43) N. Florida 6-4 (+9) Pacific 5-5 (+14) Buffalo 5-5 (+4) W. Michigan 5-5 (+1) St. Francis (NY) 5-5 (-8) Nebraska 5-5 (-9) TX Arlington 5-5 (-11) Wagner 5-5 (-20) This list will be updated following each group, and teams that are eliminated will be listed as well. |
