Rio <3
Round 2.5 selection: Frank Lampard, central midfield, Chelsea Lampard is a great goalscoring midfielder (20+ goals each of the last three seasons and 15 so far this season) whether it's from long range or in the box and his creativity and work rate have been needed more than ever this season with Drogba only occasionally showing up and Essien missing eight months of the season. Arguably the EPL player of the season so far. |

Maybe it's just because I personally dislike the guy, but I was not going to pick Lampard. His reputation as a scoring midfielder ensures he'll go first 15-20 picks, but I feel like you need to build a team around him. His inability to work with Gerrard makes me question how you'll fit him in on a team with other star MF's.

I have 1 I'm really hoping will fall, and a 2nd/3rd I wouldn't mind at all, although it's not the direction I want to take my team now. If all 3 are gone in the next 5 picks, I'm deleting the thread

Pick 2.6: Nemanja Vidic, CB, Manchester United
who I would argue has actually been in better form this season than Ferdinand. |

I think Lampard's inability to work with Gerrard was mostly down to the fact that Gerrard's a horrible fit for a flat midfield four - he's not the most positionally disciplined player on the planet, and there's a reason that Benitez has switched to using him as a support striker. Lampard's currently the runaway player of the season for a team with Ballack, Mikel, Essien, and Deco (not all of whom have been fit, admittedly). He's previously played well in two-man midfields (the last couple of seasons under Ranieri) and in a three-man midfield with Eidur Gudjohnsen as a midfielder (the second half of Mourinho's first year). He can adapt to different midfield setups. |

so can i presume by "current form" we're talking about like...2008-2009, and not like "the last 3 weeks" or something? lol

Nice picks - Xavi, in particular, I was seriously considering. Instead, I'll go for a clubmate of his, who's really the standout player at his position:
Pick 3.2 Dani Alves, RB, Barcelona |

nice pick with Dani Alves!!!
I'm not really "surprised" Zlatan was still on the board, but I'm relieved. Thought I might have to go a level down from him for my first striker. I might look elsewhere for a RB but I can respect Dani |

The strikers are going quick, I need to go ahead and pick one.
Pick 3.3 - David Villa, striker, Valencia The Spanish forward has been banging them in for club and country the past two years (37 La Liga goals in 49 appearances, 13 in 19 for Spain including a Golden Boot on the way to their Euro 2008 victory). With his quickness and deadly skills around the goal he is one of the very best at his position. |

Xavi was the one I was really hoping would fall, and Vidic one of the two I mentioned as not being the way I wanted to go - 2 CB's in the first 3 picks would have been a bold strategy, even if it's the best 2 in the world. As for Vidic vs. Ferdinand, I was debating too. Vidic might have slightly better form this season, but I feel like Ferdinand's leadership abilities outweigh any slight difference there.

It's close between them. Ferdinand is quicker and better on the ball, Vidic scores more often from corner kicks.

Haha - and Villa was the other one, but again, 2 strikers would have been bold. For my pick, he may not be the best pure Defensive mid out there, but I'm going with Daniele De Rossi, CM AS Roma/Italy. I think he'll fit in nicely and gives me some flexibility in the middle of the pitch.

3.5 John Terry - CB Chelsea
Someone to ensure that my box is kept tidy and has the ability to score off set pieces as well.

3.6 Gianluigi Buffon - GK Juventus/Italy - injured early in the year, but back and playing well. Still the clear #2 goalie in the world IMO. If nothing else, I'll have more international team captains than anyone else

4.1 - Wayne Rooney - I need a holding striker, and who better fits that then this guy? He scores goals, holds the ball up well, and bitches like no one else. Only concern would be his numerous injuries.

I was conflicted on whether to take Rooney or not with Kaka already on board. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that any more. I still need a target man, but I can only think of one guy here and I'm not sure he's playing well enough this season With that said...

I'm going to need a ball winner, and Essien and Mascherano are already gone. Next up, then, is Esteban Cambiasso DM, Inter. He will win the ball and link up with Gerrard and Ribery to start the attack.

NOTE: BishopMVP PM'd me saying he wouldn't be at a computer until 11pm tonight and gave me a list of players to choose the top one remaining for him and keep things moving
Round 4.4 - Maicon, right back, Internazionale The Inter fullback is one of the top players in his position with quickness, defensive skills, in supporting the attack, and scores a decent amount from defense. Although perhaps overshadowed by Dani Alves on the club scene, Maicon is preferred by the Brazilian manager Dunga for his superior defensive qualities. |

Pick 4.5 - Patrice Evra - left back, Manchester United
Initially I was reluctant to take a fullback so soon but looking at some of the other positions I feel there are a few players of similar quality around but the fullback positions aren't the deepest. Anyhow Patrice Evra is the world's best player at his position, good in the air, strong in the tackle, fast as hell, good dribbling skills, and covers tons of space. One minute he will make crucial interception in his own third, then the next he is behind the defense receiving a through ball from midfield and looking to send in a cross. The prototypical 21st century do-it-all fullback. |

if Katon doesn't make it back on to pick before i book out of here around 5 EST then my pick will have to wait till close to 7 EST when I get home in front of a computer. Assuming he doesn't take who I want I have at least one of them picked out but I want to think on the other...

Annoying that Cambiasso went - he would've been my next pick. Instead, I'll go for a player who's always been world-class when fit, and has actually been having a healthy year for once.
Pick 4.6 - Arjen Robben, LW, Real Madrid |

4.7 Sergio Ramos, RB/CB, Real Madrid
5.1 Marcos Senna, DMC, Villareal There might be other players I could take (in fact I have a couple in mind who are higher on my mental board), but I feel like there's somewhat of a shortage in these two positions. The gulf in class starts to drop off precipitously. |

Senna was definitely the pick of the remaining DMs, but I thought the gap from him to my backup plans at the position was a bit less than the gap between a fit Robben and any of the undrafted wingers - especially after Silva went. Pick 5.2 Giorgio Chiellini, CB, Juventus |

Pick 5.3 - Lúcio - central defender, Bayern Munich
Kind of an underrated player imo, in part because the German league doesn't get as much pub as the big three perhaps. He is an excellent defender, strong and fast, and can even join the attack occasionally. He is quite experienced and has been a part of three Bundesliga winning sides in addition to the Brazilian 2002 WC winner's squad. |

Sorry for the hold-up, didn't think it would get back to me this quick. I'm going with Sergio Aguero, Atletico Madrid/Argentina. Can play as a 9, a 10 or a side striker in a 4-3-3.

He has found his role this year with Barca playing opposite Messi on the wing, and he will fill that same role on my team opposite Ribery.

I was strongly considering Lahm as my pick and pairing him up with Maicon... but I just couldn't pass up Aguero this late. DT - doesn't Ramos play more CB now?
