Maybe "Crazylegs" Trout still has one good 40+ season in him to keep his remaining (3/6 popularity :o ) fans happy.
Update:

As of June 1st, Crazylegs Trout is still in the everyday lineup for Dunwoody, rated 48/92/50. However, he's batting only .218, but with 12 homers and 42 RBI. He's still productive, and on pace to drive in over 120 runs this year.

THIS MONTH’S RECORD: 10-17
OVERALL RECORD AT MONTH-END: 36-45
CURRENT STANDING: Last. 12 ½ games behind Lakeside

MAJOR INJURIES:
Adan Mann plays like he belongs in the bigs for the first 22 days of the month, but then he breaks his cheekbone on the 23rd. Luckily, it isn't long before Drumm's return. However, when Mann comes back (around the beginning of August), I have a feeling that 3B Thomas Sheahan is going to be out of an everyday job.

TEAM NEWS OF NOTE THIS MONTH
1B Linquiet earned player of the week honors once this month.

Crazylegs had a banner month in July, winning Batter of the Month with .357-7-23 numbers. He's now 15 homers away from the magic 500, and he passed 1,500 RBI earlier this season.

Wilcox was a well-traveled first baseman. He was originally drafted in the third round by Redan, but was a regular starter for Brookstone, Lassiter, Wheeler, Harrison, and Brookstone again during his career. His best season was 1992, for Wheeler: .296-18-84. He won a Gold Glove with Wheeler in '94. Lassiter waived him in '99 after he was no longer a starter, and he spent his last three seasons as a backup 1B for Druid Hills. He leaves the game with 133 career homers, 5172 at bats, and 633 RBI.

2002 POSITION REPORTS

CATCHER
Amos Olivares is signed through 2005 now, and Avelino Valera is a solid backup. hit .303 backing him up last year. We have no catching prospects whatsoever.

FIRST BASE
I couldn't afford to re-sign Robert Linquist, and we didn't have a prospect, so now we're without anyone who I'd put out there every day. We must find someone to play first this year. I may even trade some of that young starting pitching...

SECOND BASE
Another position where we could be in big trouble, due to the so-far non-development of prospect Dalcio “Thunder” Meras. I probably need to sign or trade for someone to start here.

THIRD BASE
Whew! Help at second base, due to a surprise development. Last year's 2nd-round pick, Robert Swisher, batted .333 in AAA last year, and has a 54 in contact hitting, along with pretty solid defensive ratings. Our financial situation is tight, so I'll probably start Swisher at 3rd, and go with Adan Mann at second.

SHORTSTOP
Adam Drumm dropped from .305 in 2000 to .228 in 2001, but he's not out there for his bat. He still gives us solid defense at a critical position

LEFT FIELD
Daniel Primmer (vs. RHP) and David Gilley (vs. LHP) give us a nice platoon out in left. 3.5-star prospect Dirk Otterson, Jr. can play all three OF positions, but LF is his best defensively.

CENTER FIELD
Pedro Pachecho could stand to improve from last years' .226 average and .331 OBP, but he looks like he has the skill to do it. If he can get on base more, 100SB's is a possibility.

RIGHT FIELD
Leland dropped off to .239 last year after hitting .316 in 2000. He's only 25, so I expect that he'll bounce back just fine.

STARTING PITCHING
Current—Dudley Anderson put up a 3.97 ERA in 34 IP's in his September call-up, and in so doing has forced his way into the rotation this year. He'll be 22 on April 6th. He joins Gould, Warrick, Rikyu and Gerlach in an improving rotation. We still have another 5-star SP prospect in Travis Halloran. I may look at trading him for a 1B.

RELIEF PITCHING
Luis Rodriguez is now a 3.5-star closer, rated 73/84/78. I'm hoping for 35-40 saves out of him this year. We've got some pretty solid guys before we get to him, too, in Charles Grieco, Jermaine Crumb, Ezra Luna, Antonio Lira. Young left Andrew Strong looks like he'll earn a spot on the big club this year. If we can sign one more solid lefty, the 'pen will be very solid.

I should be back in the T-U-C early next week, and I expect the GBA to resume play (with new settings) sometime within a week or so of my return.

NOTE: Settings changed on 1/31/2002 to use THESE. There could be some stats fluctuations over the next few seasons as the league adjusts. Based on comparing 5-year totals in the GBA to 5-year totals in my test league, here's what we should expect to see happen eventually:
  • an increase in overall league batting average (.2588-->.2652)
  • a slight increase in runs scored (81.08 per 600AB-->81.53)
  • Doubles and triples should stay virtually the same.
  • A drop in homers (16.02-->15.14)
  • A drop in strikeouts (118.06-->111.67) and walks (58.81-->56.96)
  • a small increase in overall OPS (.7243-->.7299)

I don't want to increase the payroll much at this point. I'll just try to sign a serviceable first baseman.

SIGNINGS
I sign 35-year-old 1B Chris Chai to a 2-year deal worth $5.6M per year. He put up a .274-20-92 season last year, and is a three-time All-Star, with 59/60/57 ratings currently. He's a switch-hitter, and a very good defensive first baseman as well. I'm hoping he can hold down the fort there for a couple of years.

BIG-DOLLAR SIGNINGS AROUND THE GBA
Pius inks C Kennith "Crusher" Trevino for $18.4M per year for five years. This 30-year-old has 77 HR and 282 RBI over the past three seasons, and has a lifetime .296 batting average.

McEachern gets CF Albert "Dandy" Schneider for $21.6M per year. The 32-year-old is an 8-time All Star, and put up .338-30-115 numbers last season.

POST-FREE AGENCY THOUGHTS
Couldn't afford to do much this year. Hopefully the youngsters will improve, bring the fans in, and allow me to bring in a top-tier FA in the next 2-3 years.

2 5 Looks to be poised for a breakout season.

The rotation looks ready to come around, as do young hitters like Mann and Repass. However, the lineup is very anemic at the bottom. If the top guys falter, scoring runs could be a real problem.

OK. Time to speed things up a bit. No more month-to-month reports. I'm thinking I'll report on the draft, a midseason check-in, any deadline trades I make, and at the end of the year.

NOTABLE PLAYER DEVELOPEMENT THIS SEASON:

1(10) pick LF Willie Swinford increased in both contact and power, and is 67 in contact by year-end. He hit .346 in AAA, and should begin 2003 in the everyday lineup.

2B/3B Adan Mann suffered significant losses in defensive range, to the point where I'd prefer not to play him at 2nd any more (range=47) after this season. however, with the way his bat is looking, he may not give me much choice.

AWARDS
We were shut out of all awards this year. Of note is that Gregory "Goldilocks" Caulder won his fifth Cy Young Award, all with South Cobb. He was 23-6 with a 2.02 ERA and 292 K's for the year.

THOUGHTS
We continued to improve, and several youngsters made progress. However, we failed to draw 2 million fans for the second consecutive year. We're going to need to start putting some butts in the seats if we ever want to sign any quality FA's.
