Re: the Harrison suspension

Report: James Harrison could face suspension - CBSSports.com

Quote:
Here are Casserly's full remarks on the Harrison situation from Sunday's The NFL Today.

"Let's take a look at the facts: last year he was fined four times with the largest fine being $75,000 which was reduced to $50,000," Casserly told James Brown. "This hit [against McCoy Thursday] is worse than the $75,000 (hit).

"The second thing is, the league office told [Harrison]: next infraction, escalating discipline, including a possible suspension. Head coach Mike Tomlin went to the league office this year to do what I call 'a review of the rules.' From the league's point of view, there's no excuse for any Steeler not knowing the rules.

"In my opinion," Casserly continued, "I would not be surprised at all if the league suspended him for one game, the cost being $73,500 for one game check. And, in my opinion, if I was doing this, I would absolutely suspend him. Either he doesn't know the rules, or doesn't understand the rules. A stronger message than a fine has to be sent in this situation."

The bolded part of the statement made me laugh. Officials get piled on plenty, but I think most people can agree there are times it seems like they do not know the rules, or don't understand them, either. Difference being they have the benefit of review/conferring with the other officials and changing a call.

Mike Nugent is automatic.

Rob Gronkowski has set the NFL single season TD record for a TE. Kid is a monster. He had an incredible play before the TD, diving for a catch at the 50, not getting touched, breaking three tackles on his way to the 10.

In contrast, we have fans and commentators who see more reviews than the officials do, confer with other fans and commentators, and a year later, they still don't understand the rules they're squawking about.

You are looking for at least two wins from the list of Balt, Tenn., Houston, and Jacksonville, who they already lost to at home.

Taylor has two sacks on Vick today already, both on 3rd down.

I really wish we hired a better coach in the offseason. There's no way this team should be 4-8.

While I understand what you are saying here, exactly how hard is "don't lead with your damned head into another guys head, EVER. If it happens by accident to an RB or QB outside the pocket, it's ok, but it is NEVER allowed to target another players head."

I really don't understand it and I don't understand people trying to defend it either. I don't care who the ball carrier is, when you take a running start and line up a guy to pop him in the head, you are a first class A-Hole who has no business in this league.

Even if you factor in the two TOs by Ponder, the rest of the team is pretty much no showing. If Detroit knows one thing, it's how to maul the bad teams.

Detroit is the best team in the NFL. They beat Tim Tebow.

I wouldn't say just bad teams. I think they are terrific front runners. They don't jump on somebody early that often, but when they do, a lot of their shortcomings on defense get hidden. They can pin their ears back and just play pure attack football. Combine that with play action working really well with a lead even if you don't have a running game and I think the Lions will be a team you do not want to fall behind early in the future.

Yep. They struggle against the run, so if they get the lead they don't have to face it as much. If they get behind and the team doesn't pound the ball on them, they get a chance to come back.

Bolded is the problem. Make it THE rule, period, for all players. And call it. Every single team. Then I've got no problem fining, suspending, or kicking him out of the league, or sacrificing him at the 50 for a halftime show.

1 Mini-Tebow vs. the all time great Packer team? I'd have to say Tebow's 42 Packers 3.

You give them 3? Seriously? 140-0, Mini-Tebow with 10 TD's passing and 10 TD rushing to go with 45 QB sacks.

Redskins with some trickery to take the lead on the Pats. Brandon Banks 49 yards to Moss. Skins up 3.

Dat Ponder arm strength. Can't hit an out route, throws another pick 6.

The Gingerhead Man finds Jerome Simpson for a 17 yard TD. 13-3 Bengals with 3:02 left in the half.

What will the vikings do with the #2 pick? Will they have the balls to pick a QB at that spot?

I'm surprised in this day and age there isn't a known range of how fast a ball needs to be thrown for QB to have the proper arm strength to be a NFL QB.

Carolina is looking outstanding vs another divisional opponent today. Its looking more and more like 9-7 will be good enough for at least one wild card in the NFC.

I tend to think you follow the golden rule if there is a franchise type of QB there, you take him. They did a bad move in drafting Ponder in the first place since he never had the look of a franchise guy. If the franchise guy isn't there, build elsewhere, which is what the Vikes should have done last year.

God I hope so. Building around Ponder could set the team back a decade. If they can build up elsewhere they're going to be right back where they were a few years ago with a good team everywhere but QB and not able to find a long term solution.

Agreed, if you don't have a franchise QB and get a chance to draft one you do it, no matter how badly you screwed up your first rounder the year before.

I'm tired of Harrison. Commissioner needs to suspend him indefinitely and get him out of the league before he kills somebody. Guy is a dirty dirty player.

Agreed. Very weak call. He hit him in the thigh and his arms naturally went down to wrap.

Oh stop. Pats just got flagged for a BS PI call on Grossman a few minutes ago...maybe the refs were subconsciously trying to equalize, or maybe they're just being super-sensitive this week.

Obvious awful call against London Fletcher there. I wonder if that was somehow a make-up call for the call against Andre Carter. The Carter call was bad, but the Fletcher call... I don't even have a word to describe how bad that was.

It will be interesting to see who gets the #2 pick in the draft though. If the Rams get it, I can see people trading with them to try and get RGIII. You kind of have to wonder how much Jacksonville is in love with Gabbert as well. Another case of a team grabbing a non-franchise QB when they didn't need to.

Kansas City has 21 plays for 4 total yards in the first half. Wow

Bucs let a 14-0 lead disintegrate and are now down 28-14. Unless a miracle happens, I'm not sure the Bucs have another win in them. I'm not sure if a 4-2 team has ever finished 4-12 before, but I know we can do this.

One of the pregame shows was saying they expected Wayne and Mathis to leave via FA. With hints of Saturday retiring, the Colts are likely in rebuilding mode. This season obviously would have been better with Manning and I don't think anyone would be talking about Wayne and Mathis leaving if Manning was playing and they weren't 0-12.

It is going to be an interesting off season.

If the Colts traded Manning on released him, who could use him? Who has a team good enough to make a Super Bowl push and doesn't have a good QB already?
