The UK price is going to harm them. £430 is higher than the hugely overpriced PS3 at launch, and not far short of $700. If Sony offers the PS4 at the same price on both sides of the Atlantic they will have a huge price advantage, even if they decide to charge $500. |

The UK price won't /help/ them, for sure, but the UK is a smaller market than Europe at-large, where the price is closer to parity with the US.
I mean, the price in general is just a disaster waiting to happen if Sony have any ambition at all here, but the price in the UK won't matter hugely relative to the overall pricing scheme. |

Yeah, $499 is ridiculous. I have a Xbox 360 where I own my games. I can "upgrade" to the Xbox One and license my games and lose control of what I can do with them. I don't see any touch points so far that make me want to buy it.

No. Used games will happen, despite whatever spin you want to put on it. I'm sure some publishers will charge some sort of fee which sucks, but I bet some will go free. Microsoft will not charge any fee. Furthermore, Pachter (one of your favorites) believes that no publisher will disable or charge any significant fees: Pachter: Publishers won't block Xbox One used games - GameSpot.com

Tonight will decide whether it matters. If: 1. Sony produces a sub-$400 price point and/or 2. Sony goes out of its way to say used games will proceed much the same as they did in the previous generation ......then MS has big problems on its hands. If Sony comes out with a $499 price point and says nothing about used games, then you know it's not nearly the big deal that it could have been. It's really that simple. |

The £430 UK price is $670 and the €499 Euro price is $661, so you are screwed no matter where you live in Europe. I know that taxes may be different, but that pricing is just crazy. |

I don't think used games will be that much of an issue when it is all said and done. Publishers aren't going to be willing to cut their own nuts off.

Some stuff on pricing from reddit.
The Xbox 360 launched at $299.99/$399.99 and €299.99/€399.99. The PS3 60gb was $599.99/€599.99. The Wii was $249.99/€249.99 This is neither new nor exclusive to Microsoft. |

Perception is everything. Will it alter habits of the core gamers? Not that much. They don't sell that many games back anyway. Will it cause a public backlash much like the PS3 launch that could set them back for the entire generation? Definitely could. |

Based on the opinions that were thrown around here during the 360/PS3 war, I'm pretty sure the Xbox1 is going to do fairly well.

It looks like they're really going to be pushing it as a selling point. Though unfortunately this video confirms that PS Plus is required for multiplayer. :/ Last edited by mckerney : 06-10-2013 at 11:00 PM. |

The post-game on some of these streaming feeds will likely be filled with total disbelief. I don't think anyone thought that Sony would do everything correctly in this press conference.

Game over Mircosoft. Wow.
So, to recap... PS4: No always online DRM. No resale limitation $399 start price. Sony back on top.

Is there any chance MS comes out and says tomorrow, "Sorry, but we had a total miscommunication yesterday in our conference. Our console will release at $399, won't include Kinect, and will have no used game restrictions. Sorry about that."

Sounds like PSN Plus will be required if you want to play PS4 games online. That's really lame.

It's an amazing game of cat and mouse. Putting on my tinfoil hat here, I really think that Sony strategically leaked out info to their partners to try to convince MS that they were going to start at a $449-499 price point. It's like MS was confident that they were at a good price point and had no concerns that what happened tonight would actually happen. They showed no hints that they thought they might be in a pickle. I can't even imagine how the MS personnel felt when the used game announcement and price announcement were met with applause. They had multiple crowd shots during the applause where you could see media members just shaking their heads in disbelief at what had just happened. Easily one of the most amazing moments I've ever seen at E3. |

It was bound to happen. I don't play online but love my PS+ membership because it's a very good value. From a competitive standpoint, it doesn't hurt them because MS already requires it. |
