Ran into a named demon in the far west looking for other towns. After he cast amnesia on me for a couple of items and the confuse wore off, I teleported out into a Bone Golem lair and died. Sigh. So ends Ilbo the II.

Ooof Klayman, that Bone Golem was prophetic there wasn't he. Too bad you had some nice stuff on your guy. You were missing a lot of resistances though which was likely going to kill you sooner or later at the level you were on. I think I will be avoiding the western part of the map for a while
Good run with him though! |

Yeah, I think I was on borrowed time for awhile, with countless near death experiences. Got a little cocky with the Dragon mail and returning Diamond shots though. It's going to be tough starting again.

Sorry about the death, Klayman - you definitely had some nice stuff. Oddly enough, I just found that Catapult sling a few minutes ago. Up to level 28 now and feeling decent. Having a fear and electric aura really helps with all the non-uniques. They hit me, get damaged, and then get afraid and run away. I then heal a little. Lather, rinse, repeat until dead.

Finally feel like I'm getting somewhere with this guy at Level 21. Just found my first very good weapon, off of Robin Hood, A (Trump Weapon) Gusiarme (2d5) (+6, +20%) (+1 to perception). Gives Slow Digestion, Regen, Free Action, Slay and Protection vs Evil, Resist vs Shards and Nexus, and Activate for Teleport. Has a minor nuisance power of random teleportation too-but I can decline the teleport when it happens so I can put up with it. Right after that I got a Javelin of Keeness (+17, +100%) off of Farmer Maggot, which actually boosts my fighting skill to excellent, but I'll be throwing it to soften up a bad guy.
Have only resist cold of the basic resistances though, so gotta work on that. I found a sweet Amulet in a jewelry shop that gives me protection vs natural creatures, evil, orcs, dragons, giants, demons, undead, and trolls. Last edited by Thomkal : 05-03-2009 at 04:06 PM. |

Here's a lesson to never ignore those large rooms filled with rubble-found this artifact in the rubble:
Filthy Rag of Keri the Humble (+1, +20) (+1 to STR, CON, and CHR), sustain strength, slow metabolism, and create food every 100 turns. Since I was still using a non plus Cord Armor I had bought way back when I started the comp, I didn't have any trouble switching it out for the rag. |

Sigh...dead. It's a shame, I was really enjoying this character and things were going great. It was a combo of stupid and unlucky. I was in a vault trying to move out of the line of sight of some mages that were summoning. Unfortunately there was an ethereal dragon I moved away from. In hindsight I should've healed or better yet killed it first (especially since the mages weren't summoning anything threatening). Sure enough I took a step back and...'it breathes light'...no resistance to light and the damage was for roughly 350 hps. EDIT: Oh, and the best part, about 100-200 turns ago I had found artifact gloves that provide resistance to light. Double sigh.

oooof too bad you forgot about those gloves with resist light on them. When you get down to that level there's just so many things you can do-spells, items etc, that its easy to forget something. I die a lot that way. Still a good run with him, we'll just have to see if it holds up. Are you gonna restart him since there's a week left?

I keep getting characters up to 10th level and than get butchered. These rogues take a lot of care. I will keep plugging away.

It took a long while to finish because I didn't have much kill power compared to how tough they were (and my fire branded weapon was useless since they all had resist fire), but yeah, there were some tense moments and it took a lot of healing and a potion of *speed* to pull it off. Oh, and the chaos armor was a big help too, otherwise that would've added another hr or so to the quest to deal with the unique baron of hell. |

Still plugging away with Ilbo II - he's up to 15th level now and just knocked off Lagduf (rods of light vs. Orc are way cool). Still have to wrap up the rest of the Orcs and then gather the loot to take town. Should get me to Level 16. Taking this one slow and steady, still figuring out how to prepare for the quests. Probably won't get up to the stratospheric level that you guys have achieved, but then again I am lucky to play an hour a day.

Up to 31 and plugging away. The best thing about this thread is it opened my eyes to how incredibly useful those Dragon Scale Mails are. Having a big ball attack available every 50 turns or so has made my life so much easier when it comes to clearing rooms. Plus, the fact that they are huge damage (as said earlier) makes killing uniques so much easier. I now have Balance Dragon scale mail, which gives me resistances to sound/shards/chaos/disenchantment - 4 that are hard to find. It does an 840 damage balance ball, which is nice.

Up to level 32. Found my first artifact ring today:
The Ring 'Galdrug' (+1) It increases your strength and wisdom by 1. It sustains your wisdom and charisma. It provides immunity to paralysis. It provides resistance to acid, cold, electricity, poison, bright light, fear, blindness, and chaos. It allows you to see invisible monsters and warps fate around you. It provides protection from natural creatures. The funny part is that I have pretty much all those resistances (except fear) from other sources, but what it allows me to do is have flexibility to shift other things around without losing key resistances. Also, I love a ring of fate, so that's a nice bonus thrown on top.

Heh, I may or may not beat JAG depending on whether I find something that has life draining resistance. My pattern: Go into the dungeon at level 32, exit at level 30 or 31 after 8000 undead drain me of my life. Search every store for a potion of Restore Life Levels, rinse/lather/repeat. I just found a level with 20+ death knights, which not only drain you of your life, but summon indiscriminately. Bleh. I also found my first artifact amulet...which was cursed and all around hideous.

At the end I was finding them pretty frequently strewn about vaults (I died with 3 such potions in my inventory). So long as you stay alive, potion or no, I fully expect to be passed.
Just to goof around, I've played a little bit with a vampire mage (sorcery / death). The hardest level is level 1. My first four mages died before reaching level 2. The 5th one survived and is now around level 12 or so and life is considerably easier. Sorcery / death is a fantastic combination, death for the kill spells, sorcery for most everything else. I miss being able to run into any trap I wanted to as a rogue though. Last edited by JAG : 05-06-2009 at 04:57 PM. |

Up to level 33 now. My biggest issue to date is that I'm still relying on a basic Defender weapon. I could really use a good artifact weapon. I'm also carrying around 4 rods (fire/frost/lightning bolt, plus recall) and 4 wands (lightning/cold/acid ball, cold blasts). I find them invaluable with the recharging spell, but I think I might dump the rods and just carry wands - I find at this point, I rarely use single bolts. I've definitely taken to using those rods rather than using a ranged weapon though.
Anyone else still playing around?

Your comment about using the rods vs. the ranged weapon surprises me. By the time I died, I was capable of doing 300+ damage per round with ranged weapons vs. wimpy 11d8 fire bolts that many creatures were resistant to (or other lower damage bolts). I had a stack of rods of fire bolts for a while, but I rarely used them. I had a couple rods of (cold/lightning) balls which were useful for crowd control but again the damage was lousy compared to ranged attacks. |

I don't know what it is, but Z is just not grabbing me the way vanilla does. I blame myself.
Got to 15 with Ilbo, no decent loot, tried to start some quests, ended up running back to town to get away from something or other that nearly killed me, lost interest.

It looks like I'll end up in the lead again, but if that happens I'm going to throw it to next in line so we can get a different option for #3, assuming people are still interested. I thought it might be interesting to start with a level 20 character so that the competition can start in the middle. Random thought.

I'm not using the rods much anymore (I tend to spray wands all over the place) and for big attacks, I use the armor and then run if necessary - I think it was a combination of: 1) They never missed - I always hated missing with ranged shots, especially several times in a row as the monster came closer and closer. 2) Mechanics wise, they were easier. I'm just not as fond of collecting ammunition from the floor every combat. I really ought to give it another shot (you see what I did there?) and try ranged weapons for a while.

1 - Heavily enchanted slings / shots are your friends 2 - Shots of returning are your friends. Based on comments from people in this thread, I'd recommend we switch to playing ToME for the next go-around. It's considerably easier in the beginning and easier to find some nice items early on. Maybe mixing up the winning conditions would be good too (most quests completed, highest level unique killed, ... just throwing ideas out). Anyway, winner's decision, just putting out some food for thought. |

I eally njoy unning Ilbo. But mostly, I'm being selfish - I want someone else to make a decision so I can be surprised by it. Plus, I think it's a good idea to shift games, so someone who knows a different game (I'm all Zangband) can run the next one.

Well here's my entry. Was pushing along well the first week, but didn't have much time to play it this second week. Didn't get very far down cause I moved to a new town after a while and had to go down all over. And until the last few character levels didn't really feel like I could dive very deep. Just picked up the axe from the one of the orc uniques in a quest-its pretty sweet. I was only doing a max of 16 damage with the weapon I had for a long time, then got the dagger artifact earlier today that did a little more and now this axe which more than doubles my damage, so I should be able to go deeper now. Was a fun and different kind of character to play for me, but frustrating too because it took so long to find anything with resists on it and decent weapons-had to pass on a few monster pits because I just couldn't do enough damage. So congrats yet again Mali-knew I wasn't going to catch you, but wanted you to be nervous. Last edited by Thomkal : 05-11-2009 at 08:14 PM. |

a good start there dwardzala-my character probably looked a lot like yours around that level in terms of equipment found and such. If you are going to continue on past the comp with him some things I would suggest.
1-I know money is hard to come by, but keep looking to improve the armor you might be keeping for a while, things like the Cloak of Protection, and Boots of the wild. Be on the lookout for *enchant armor* scrolls on sale at the various stores. 2-I'd swap out that amulet of sensing for the protection from orcs one. You are about to enter prime orc territory, and you'd be amazed how the various protection abilities help in this version. Amulet of Sensing is usually a pretty good item to have early on for most characters, but this guy's already got pretty good skills in that area, so its not helping you as much as the orc protection amulet would. And hold on to that amulet of hold life too in case you can't find an item that has it along with other stuff. 3-Try to find something to improve your Intelligence. After that discussion we had about which spell class to use for this comp, spells turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for me. High mana costs and failure rates meant I didn't use them nearly as much as I would like to. Improving your INT will help there. 4-Look for things with resistances from the four basic ones-acid, fire, lightning, and cold. Took me a while to to find them, and then I got several items with resists of course. Look for a shield/buckler of resistance as probably the cheapest way to cover the basic resists. 5-Look for a weapon with some plusses on it though they can be hard to find or get some enchant scrolls for your rapier. I used a rapier too for a long while with this character, but your really need to find an improvement as soon as possible. I would consider swapping out that bow for a sling too. It's nice you got some plusses on the bow and I don't know what kinda arrows you have in your quiver, but you'll get 2 attacks with a sling and soon to be three when you hit level 20. You did well though and if you continue playing with the character, I think you will do okay for a while if you can just build up your armor, get some reisstances and improve your weapons. |

Had a little bit of time to play this morning, so was playing our guy here. Loaded the game where I left off, outside some kind of pit or vault where I had killed most of the inhabitants, had a ton of stuff laying around to pick up and ID, and a bunch of traps to disarm for free exp. So I take one step, hit a trap I hadn't detected yet....it was a trap door and I fell down to the next level....arrrrghh!

And our winner is JAG - he'll be determining the time and subject for the next competition.

Looks like the RNG decided to make it up to me for missing out on that vault...by putting two small vaults right next to each other. Of course I have to get to the other vault, which I can only get to through a room that's exploded with gibbering mouthers. Good thing I found this dimension door scroll in this vault.

Levelled inside the second vault and my weapon's "attracts" demon patrons power kicked in. Slortar gave me a level and a laser beam eyes mutation. Where were you when I needed to catch Mali Slortar? :::shakes fist:::

Heh. I love me a Ring of Fate because it seems to affect the RNG in favor of tougher levels and more vaults. That's why the death of Ilbo 2 saddened me with his Artifact Ring that was like a Ring of Fate with a bundle of extra stuff.
