Thought about this earlier, so I'll throw it out there: anybody seen mention of a mechanism where locations could get themselves removed from the spawn/Stop/Gym list?

I ask because my son found at least 7 spawns and a couple of P'stops on the campus of his old HS (which is also primary/middle school). I can't imagine that's going to make life easy for teachers anywhere.

Seems that the game in some cases repeatedly spawns the same pokemon in the same places. It's called "fishing" and if you can find a spot that does it, you can get a huge number of pokemon on the regs. Some lucky people have found spawning points for that dumb goldfish that you need 400 of to evolve it and have a Gyrados out if it. I haven't found any places like that yet.

Another newb question...let's say you and I are walking down the street together and playing. A Pokemon thing appears 10 feet in front of both of us. Can both of us catch it separately, or if you're quicker with whatever you are supposed to do, you get it and I don't?

From playing it yesterday evening at a park and chatting with some people, either you both can catch it or there happens to be a lot of coincidence with the same Pokemon spawning at the same spot for multiple people.

If there isn't a way already, I'm pretty sure this will quickly be added in an update to head off potential lawsuits.

On our block it's literally the same 3 characters at the same spot. I know there is a bat in the bush two houses down, pigeon looking thing two house the other direction and crabs on the corner of the street.

I think at this point, everyone is a newb (someone teaches me something new every day). It seems unlimited as to the number of people who can catch one in the same spot. Saw packs of people getting the same character at the same time with the same points on the screen.

I finally "won" a gym, only to have a team of teenage soccer kids come in and repeatedly kick the crap out of my guys. I think I liked just collecting stuff more than this gym crap. Or maybe it would be better if someone near here was the blue team.

There is a pond I drive by every day and a Squirtle and a Psyduck pop up as being 3 "steps" away almost every time. I'll get out one day and investigate.

Until then, I'd be REALLY disappointed if the programmers were lazy enough to make the same pokemon spawn in the same places at regular intervals.

We have no interest in playing, but evidently my wife's PT clinic is a Pokemon hotspot. Her patients actually want to be there so they can get them.

My wife is a Child Life Specialist at the NYU children's rehab center and one of her kids yesterday, who has barely spoken since she's been there, was upset yesterday because she realized there's a hotspot or whatever just outside and she isn't in any way mobile yet. This is a girl who went through literal back-breaking surgery to correct a spine problem a couple days ago, and that's what she's thinking about.

That's actually pretty great. How nice it has to be for this girl to be able to focus on something mindless and fun instead of the fact that her back is totally fucked up. Never underestimate the power of mindless diversions and a little escapism when times are tough, they have served me well.

Agreed. And a bunch of her other patients who are in wheelchairs can play with some assistance. Not that it's ever great to be in a hospital as a kid (or an adult), but it's tough in NYC because for the little amount of time they can go outside each day, they really can't go very far. So having a reason to be excited for the 100 feet of "walking" they're allowed to do is pretty awesome.

Me and my girlfriend went out to my little downtown area last night for dinner. She really got into the game with her daughter and my girlfriend can get pretty obsessive about things, so, needless to say we stopped many times on the walk to and from dinner so she could catch Pokemon, scout out gyms, Poke Stations or whatever.

What was really crazy was just how many people were playing. There were packs of people roaming around the downtown area with their phones, talking about the game, playing it, people sitting on street corners, all over the place. There were just a ton of people walking around playing this game.

They will have to figure out this issue with sensitive locations, though. There are a lot of sacred spaces and hallowed grounds (cemeteries, certain memorials or museums, things of that nature) that really should not be subject to Pokemon Go players visiting because it would seem at least insensitive if not outright grotesque to use such places in a way was not intended for such "casual" visitation. Something like the 9/11 memorial at the WTC in New York would be difficult to avoid as it's still a living and working portion of the city, so there's only so much that can be done, but really, there shouldn't be any such things at all inside of some place like the Holocaust Museum in Washington, for example. I know some would say that it should be seen as perhaps good that good and light things can be done even in such somber spaces, but there has to be some sensitivity to what those places are because most people don't want to obscure the meaning of those places by something that has no connection to it whatsoever, especially those with a deeply personal and intimate connection to those places.

It is another way to gain experience to level up I think. If the gym is a different color from you then anyone with the other two colors can take down the gym by knocking the 1st number to 0 by fighting them.

If the gym is your team color then fighting your color gym makes it stronger. The strong the gym, the more of that team color can be added to it. I think it's 4k to make the gym add a level. Max levels are 10. There should be a number set up left to tell you how much is needed for the next level to be added. To add your player to a level on a gym there is an icon on the lower left and the should be a color empty circle up top.

You can beat pokemon who are stronger than you, one of the keys is to select pokemon for your team that are strong against whatever the type is that is in the gym (Choose water pokemon to go against fire pokemon, bugs vs plants, etc.) One of the other keys is to just keep attacking. You get to take 6 pokemon into a battle, the gyms I have fought against have always had a maximum of 3 defending them so if your 6 can take their 3, you can take a gym.

And there have been studies done, CP is mostly a defensive number indicating how much HP a pokemon might have.. The attacks they make all appear to do the same damage no matter what level the pokemon are on.

Released in Canada today so my two sons and I hit the streets after dinner to see what it's all about. Encountered probably a dozen different groups of people also playing, a couple of which helped us out as we didn't know what we were doing. Saw others socializing and asking each other things, etc. Kind of cool, and had us out of the house for well over an hour.

Tomorrow night we plan to go again, I'll bring the dog and maybe the wife. Can't see this being a thing much when the weather is cold, but should be fun for some evenings this summer.

Yeah in Canada you have until early November and then the game is going to be pretty much dead except for the main transit lines.

I have actually been enjoying their first game Ingress more. Instead of Pokestops, they are portals, and you have to capture and defend your portals, then link them together into control units to get points for your team.

I just started playing last week and currently own 7 portals. I took a nice 45 minute walk into some less dense areas and captured 3 portals tonight. Someone much higher level than me has a nice link that breaks my town in half at one of the central points (Yonge St if you know the GTA). I'm not poiwerful enough to take down those portals yet, so I've planned going to a small park tomorrow to create a smaller control field until I can level up and start taking on more powerful players.

Walked around the town I grew up in and one loop got something like 8-10 stops and some of them we hit up at least twice. There were two gyms but I knew I couldn't take either so I gave up. Where i live has way more people, but there really isn't anywhere to walk around town.

Went out with the boys again tonight. Walked about a kilometre and then the 5 year-old dropped my phone on the sidewalk and broke it.

2nd extended outing with it, gets me to Level 5 (and Instinct membership), with 7 new monsters added to the Pokedex, enough to level once & get the whole color choice thing out of the way.

And only two of those on foot, one while having a smoke after dinner & the other while walking to the car. The rest (since I wasn't driving) were done in mostly the course of normal travel.

Now trying to get my head around what constitute "smart" training decisions.

I'm not good, nor exciting, but it's definitely more fun than OCD refreshing Facebook while I'm out.

Its wasteful to try and improve a pokemon who is a low CP. Check that little semi circle around them and see how far to the right it reaches, the closer it is to the end of its little arc, the better off you are. It is essentially a reflection of their level of development. A pokemon that is at a high level before it evolves will remain at that high level after evolution, so those are the ones you want to hold on to and build up. For instance, evolving a 400 CP Eevee is going to result in a far more powerful evolution than a 300 CP one.

This will save you stardust and candy and help decide which pokemon to transfer to the professor for extra candies.

The latter part -- just getting stuff off my screen & outta my (perceived) way -- is probably the bigger motivation for me to do anything. But I did manage, at least, to figure out that not all same CP cards are created equal, not even of the same character.

Now IF I've figured out another thing or two correctly: you'd only ever want, probably at absolutely maximum, only seven cards of any one Type, ever
(6 to battle, +1 as a potential gym leave behind) ... I think.

My daughter has been playing since. Does it automatically know to spawn pokemon to wherever you first started playing, or are we just lucky that we keep having them just show up in the living room?

It does seem to spawn one in your general vicinity when you first open it up.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you always get a "starter" one almost immediately afterwards. You might have to walk ten feet or whatever but then one of 3-5 different basics will appear.

To get a guaranteed hit when capturing, turn off the camera (AR off) and then right before the pokeball appears start swiping up. It'll be a dead shot almost every time.

Is it just me or are Pokemon breaking free waaaaaaaay to often today. I wanna say I had at least 3 of 5 escape whereas it felt like 1/20 before. I'm sure they're just trying to sell raspberries(are these new?)

Level related maybe? Like you hit an accelerated difficulty point?

Purely anecdotal here but, fwiw ...

I just crossed from Lvl 5 to Lvl 6 this evening, and I'm actually getting fewer escapes (or feels like it)

My kid is at Lvl 11.5 and says he felt like he's getting more escapes but that it's due to encountering considerably higher base CP monsters, which are just tougher to keep captured.

Decided to start playing Saturday. At level 9, I'm seeing more escapes. Supposedly it has to do with how accurate your throw is with the rings, but who knows.

I was walking around the neighborhood last night around 10 when a group of teenagers drove by and stopped at a site where they're building a new home. They proceeded to rock the port-a-potty and knocked it over. I don't understand kids. Unfortunately I didn't get a full license plate.
