April 2011
Pirates: The Pirates are going to struggle heavily with pitching this year, but their potent offense powered them to an 11-7 start, good enough for 1st place with the Cards .5 GB. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny's ML career gets off to a fantastic start. He went 3 for 4 on opening day and currently ties for the team lead in HR and RBI. For his efforts, he was named NL Rookie of the Month. .333/.372/.625 with 5 HR, 16 RBI in 17 games. Todd Volmert (AA) - Volmert is making a good case for promotion, showcasing very good patience at the plate and some decent speed around the basepaths. His power has not developed as much as hoped. .337/.410/.488 with 1 HR, 12 RBI in 22 games. Carmen Hillebrew (A) - Showcasing strong power numbers so far, but the team's reluctance to promote him is probably due to his subpar average and high strikeouts. .267/.366/.616 with 8 HR, 24 RBI in 23 games. Jolton Joe (A) - Performing very similar to Hillebrew, with better contact but less power. .298/.384/.524 with 5 HR, 19 RBI in 22 games. Royals: Despite strong pitching, an anemic offense has held the Royals back to an 8-9 start (3.5 GB). David Ginsberg (AAA) - Has gotten off to a very good start, although his WHIP is a bit high. He should be expecting a phone call sometime this season. 2-0, 3.96 ERA, 20 K, 8 BB in 4 starts. Mike Schaplowski (AAA) - Despite his surprisingly low prospect ranking, he is tearing up AAA with solid hitting and speed. .353/.413/.544 with 1 HR, 8 RBI in 16 games. Dave Corson (AA) - Hasn't progressed quite as well as his fellow pitching prospect Ginsberg. Control problems are a huge issue as he has issued 16 walks in 5 starts, with 15 of those coming in 3 starts. 2-1, 5.16 ERA, 20 K, 16 BB. in 5 starts. David Gonzalez (AA) - Swinging the bat pretty well so far, but needs to work on his discipline both at the plate and on the basepaths. Has only walked 3 times in 94 AB and has been caught stealing 4 times with only 3 SB's to show for it. .330/.373/.447 with 1 HR, 9 RBI in 22 games.

Pirates: Pitching continues to haunt the Pirates and they fell back to a 23-23 record, but only 2 games out of 1st. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny continues his great rookie season, with a great mix of power and speed. The only drawback is a surprisingly low walk rate. .321/.356/.580 with 10 HR, 30 RBI in 40 games. Todd Volmert (AA) - Volmert continues to rake and showcases a bit more power as expected. Still mysteriously being held down in AA. .335/.409/.492 with 6 HR, 32 RBI in 49 games. Jolton Joe (AA) - Finally promoted to AA and is making the most of it with outstanding power numbers so far. .282/.365/.536 with 7 HR, 21 RBI in 27 games. Carmen Hillebrew (A) - Pirates still holding this young slugger down despite some very impressive performances. .283/.382/.554 with 13 HR, 45 RBI in 50 games. Royals: In a reversal, the bottom has fallen out on the pitching but the bats have come alive. Currently 21-24 (3 GB). David Ginsberg (ML) - Ginsberg's continued dominance at the AAA level finally earned him a promotion to the show at the end of the month. He hasn't started yet, but his final AAA numbers were 8-0, 2.48 ERA, 64 K, 26 BB in 10 starts. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Earned a callup with teammate David Ginsberg at the end of the month. His final AAA numbers were .323/.377/.534 with 6 HR, 28 RBI in 43 games. Dave Corson (AA) - Has recovered from his awful start to the season and has started to use his tremendous fastball to great effect. 5-2, 2.24 ERA, 84 K, 34 BB in 11 starts. David Gonzalez (AA) - Still needs to work on his stealing ability. Has now been caught stealing on 11 out of 18 attempts. .285/.353/.407 with 3 HR, 26 RBI in 52 games.

June 2011
Pirates: Went 18-9 in June, including winning 8 of their last 10 to reclaim first place. Now 41-32 with a 2 game lead on the Brewers. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny's power has tailed off quite a bit as he only hit 1 HR in June, but he's still hitting the ball extremely well and currently leads the team in Batting Avg. .324/.373/.538 with 11 HR, 38 RBI in 64 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Now this was a surprise. Jolton started the season in A ball and has now made it all the way to the majors, taking the platoon spot of Andrew McCutchen who is out 6 weeks with an injury. Went 0 for 4 in his only ML start so far. Final AA numbers were .294/.382/.559 with 15 HR, 43 RBI in 52 games. Todd Volmert (AA) - Has been in Altoona so long is thinking of buying a house there. Continues to destroy Eastern League pitching. .321/.399/.505 with 12 HR, 47 RBI in 76 games. Carmen Hillebrew (A) - It's got to sting to see former teammate Jolton Joe go all the way to the big league while Carmen is still in A ball. He continues to smash the ball and walk a ton. .272/.383/.514 with 18 HR, 60 RBI in 76 games. Royals: It's a freefall for the Royals as they went 10-17 in June and are now near the bottom in almost every single category. 31-41 overall, 11 GB. David Ginsberg (ML) - Had a tough loss in his debut start, going 8 innings and only allowing 2 runs. Allowed 15 runs over his next 3 starts to run his record to 0-4. Finally got his first victory at the end of June, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits over 8 innings. 1-4, 4.71 ERA, 23 K, 14 BB Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Welcome to the big leagues, kid. Schaplowski looks completely lost out there, both at the plate and on the field as he's made 8 errors already. .183/.242/.229 with 1 HR and 10 RBI in 26 games. Dave Corson (AA) - Has Has really found his rhythm at AA now. Still walking alot of batters, but also striking them out at a pretty good clip. Should be expecting a callup soon. 8-3, 2.63 ERA, 141 K, 64 BB in 17 starts. David Gonzalez (AA) - Stealing discipline has improved a bit as he was successful on 6 out of 8 attempts in June. .278/.347/.406 with 5 HR, 41 RBI in 77 games.

July 2011
Pirates: Had a terrible July, going 10-17 and falling back to 4th place. They are now 51-49, but thankfully only 2 GB. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny was on fire in July, hitting 7 HR's to win Rookie of the Month for the 2nd time this season. He's also increased his walk rate. .324/.387/.569 with 18 HR, 56 RBI in 89 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Jolton has really struggled in the majors and there's a good chance he might get sent back down when McCutchen gets healthy. He still has yet to hit a HR or any extra base hit in almost 50 at bats. .245/.351./.245 with 0 HR, 3 RBI in 22 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Finally got called up and is currently hitting leadoff for the Pirates. Like Jolton, he has yet to hit a HR in almost 50 at bats, but he is getting on base and has 5 doubles. .298/.389/.404 with 0 HR, 7 RBI in 14 games. Carmen Hillebrew (A) - Everyone is making moves, but poor Hillebrew is trapped in A ball. He's absolutely torching A level pitching and there seems nothing left for him to learn down there. .285/.420/.550 with 27 HR, 82 RBI in 104 games. Royals: The Royals continue to fall apart as their pitching outside of Grienke is awful. They are 42-56, 12.5 GB. David Ginsberg (ML) - Still a learning process for the young hurler. In his 6 July starts, he allowed 5 or more runs 3 times. He did pitch two solid games but the bullpen cost him a victory each time. 1-6, 5.03 ERA, 43 K, 38 BB. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - A definite improvement over his first month as he cut down on the errors and hit .281 for the month, although his walk rate severely dropped. .233/.264/.314 with 3 HR, 27 RBI in 51 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - This is a promotion I didn't see coming. I also did not expect the performance that we saw. Installed as the new leadoff hitter, Gonzalez has been terrific, getting on base at a terrific clip. He's also stolen 8 bases in 10 attempts. .403/.470/.556 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 12 R in 17 games. Dave Corson (AAA) - Finally earned his promotion to AAA. Has a good record, but allowing alot of runs and his K/BB ratio is very bad. However, he has been extremely unlucky with a BABIP of .387. 4-1, 5.06 ERA, 35 K, 27 BB.

August 2011
Pirates: Second straight awful month in a row has dropped the Pirates way back in the race. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny continues to play well and will almost certainly be Rookie of the Year. He's 2nd on the team in HR's and 1st in slugging %. .314/.374/.553 with 23 HR, 73 RBI in 114 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Amazingly, the Pirates have kept Jolton in his platoon spot ahead of McCutchen. His hitting improved a bit in August, but he still has no power, with only 1 HR in 96 at bats. .281/.340/.365 with 1 HR, 12 RBI in 43 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Has been a solid leadoff hitter for the Pirates, but a total lack of power as his HR drought has now reached 146 at bats. .295/.366/.370 with 0 HR, 17 RBI in 39 games. Carmen Hillebrew (AAA) - Opposing pitchers in the Florida State League must have started a petition to get Hillebew out of A ball and the Pirates finally listened, promoting him to AAA Indianapolis at the end of the month. Finished his A season .300/.445/.630 with 44 HR, 117 RBI, 125 BB. Royals: The Royals were a nice surprise last year, but have been awful across the board this season. They are now 55-71, 14.5 GB. David Ginsberg (ML) - Missed two weeks this month due to a freak off field injury. Allowed 13 runs and issued 14 walks in his only two starts this month. 1-8, 5.61 ERA, 51 K, 52 BB. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Has showcased some nice speed with 19 steals and only getting caught once. Needs to get on base much more. .249/.287/.318 with 4 HR, 38 RBI in 78 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Cooled off a bit from his impressive start, but still has a terrific OBP for a leadoff hitter. .342/.396/.503 with 1 HR, 20 RBI, 27 R, in 44 games. Dave Corson (AAA) - Improved a bit in August thanks to some better luck (BABIP dropped to .333), although control is still a major issue. 6-3, 4.42 ERA, 68 K, 41 BB.

Glad to see that Gonzalez fears AA pitching more than those guys in the majors.

End of Regular Season 2011
Pirates: The Pirates continue their post-June collapse with a 16-19 finish. Has to be a disappointment after last year's playoff appearance. They finished 77-85 (11.5 GB). Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Sonny's rookie season was a tremendous success. He won rookie of the month twice and as expected was named NL Rookie of the Year. .307/.374/.543 with 27 HR, 86 RBI in 146 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Jolton finished the year pretty strong, but has still has some work to do in the offseason if he wants a regular starting job instead of a platoon situation. .265/.337/.358 with 2 HR, 21 RBI. Todd Volmert (ML) - Definitely worked on his power the final two months, finally knocking a couple out of the park and hitting a ton of doubles. .300/.354/.432 with 2 HR, 34 RBI, 34 R in 71 games. Carmen Hillebrew (AAA) - Was named the Florida State League MVP for his dominant performance. Did not do very well in his short AAA stint aside from a high walk rate. .167/.375/.167 with 0 HR, 2 RBI in 5 games. Royals: The Royals actually had a strong finish to the season, going 22-14 over the final two months. Hilariously, they ended up with the same record as the Pirates for the second year in a row, 77-85 (16 GB). David Ginsberg (ML) - Still has some consistency issues, but was much better over his final 7 starts and should be ready to excel next year with the added experience. 5-10, 5.08 ERA, 81 K, 73 BB in 20 starts. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Finished the season with 27 SB, but still needs to get on base way more. Still has alot of improvement left for his gap hitting, which should help. .261/.302/.346 with 5 HR, 52 RBI in 112 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Only Sonny had a better year among our players. David showcased good contact, decent walk rate, good speed (19 SB), and lots of extra base hits (39 2B). .328/.378/.486 with 3 HR, 39 RBI, 52 R in 78 games. Dave Corson (AAA) - Was on fire for his final 3 starts (1.59 ERA and 29 K). Control still problematic, but it will probably always be the case with this hurler. The Royals will live with it if he can keep up his 10.96 K/9. 7-4, 3.62 ERA, 97 K, 49 BB.

2012 Preseason Update
*Hillebrew is our only player left in the minors, but I expect him to get called up soon as his swing looked pretty good in spring training. *Sonny had an injury in spring training and will be out for the first three weeks of the season. *The Pirates will open the season with Volmert batting 1st and Jolton batting 3rd. *The Royals will open the season with Schaplowski batting 2nd and Gonzalez batting 3rd. Ginsberg has the 2nd spot in the rotation and Corson has the 4th spot. *The Pirates made some major moves in the offseason. They signed Prince Fielder for $124 million over 5 years, traded a very unhappy Andrew McCutchen to the Nationals for SP Jordan Zimmerman, signed RP DJ Qualls to a 2 yr, $18 million deal, and picked up SS Ryan Theriot in a trade for RP Joel Hanrahan. *The Royals didn't make any major trades, but did a good job keeping players in Kansas City by inking Greinke to a 4 yr, $65 million deal and Billy Butler to a 1 yr, $4.6 million deal. *Other notable league moves included Albert Pujols signing with Colorado for $108 million over 3 yrs, Heath Bell going to Cleveland for $49 million over 3 years, and Jose Reyes going to Seattle for $132 million over 5 yrs, and Adrian Gonzales going to Baltimore for $92 million over 5 years. *With their acquisitions, I definitely expect the Pirates to contend. The Royals will all depend on how well their rookies do. If Ginsberg and Corson can provide a good compliment to Greinke and Meche can get back to form, they could have the best staff in baseball.

April 2012
Pirates: The Pirates get off to a slow start this season as major free agent acquisition gets shelled in April. Prince Fielder helped keep the Pirates afloat with 10 HR's in the month. Pirates are 8-11 (3 GB) Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Pirates took a cautious approach to Sonny's return and he did not play in April, but it looks like he is slated to return on May 1. Jolton Joe (ML) - Slow start for the youngster as he's still getting accustomed to being an everyday ML player. .247/.295/.420 with 1 HR, 9 RBI in 19 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Had a decent start to the season, finally overcoming the power issues he had last year by belting 5 HR's in April and only striking out 4 times in 82 at bats. .256/.300/.476 with 5 HR, 15 RBI in 19 games. Carmen Hillebrew (AAA) - Clearly not happy at having to start the season in the minors and took it out on International League pitching with 13 HR's in 82 at bats. He has been getting experience at 3B in the minors, which is good news as he won't have to sit behind Prince Fielder. Named IL player of the month. .354/.518/.878 with 13 HR, 35 RBI in 24 games. Royals: The Royals manage to start the season above .500 thanks largely to Greinke's dominating performance (0.79 ERA in 4 starts). 10-9 (.5 GB) David Ginsberg (ML) - One really bad outing against the Rays where he got shelled for 8 runs skews his overall numbers, but his other 3 starts were pretty solid, allowing 3 runs or less in each of them. 1-2, 5.27 ERA, 10 K, 6 BB Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Slow start as his OBP is still way too low, but did have 4 triples in the month along with 4 SB's. .265/.315/.398 with 0 HR, 9 RBI in 19 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Despite hitting for a high average, the massive amount of extra base hits he was getting last year disappeared in April. He also got caught stealing on 3 out of 7 attempts. .309/.360/.383 with 1 HR, 9 RBI. Dave Corson (ML) - Jekyll and Hyde routine this season so far. Allowed 5 runs in two starts and allowed 1 run in the other two. 1-1, 4.44 ERA, 17 K, 16 BB in 4 starts.

Good thing Hillebrew is learning 3B.
I was thinking we have guys that can play OF or 1B, and with Prince signing that leaves 4 FOFC guys for 3 OF spots! |

May 2012
Pirates: The return of Ciccarelli helped the Pirates to an above .500 record in May, which is only good enough for 5th place in a very crowded division. They are now 23-24 (3 GB). Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Last year's ROTY picks up right where he left off and has improved his walk rate from a year ago. .360/.449/.596 with 4 HR, 23 RBI in 27 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Improved a bit in May as he smacked 4 HR in the month and only struck out 8 times in 108 at bats. Still performing below expectations overall. .259/.321/.423 with 6 HR, 27 RBI in 46 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Had a very strong month, hitting .358 with 12 doubles and 5 HR. Has only struck out 7 times in 188 at bats this year. .314/.351/.569 with 10 HR, 32 RBI in 43 games. Carmen Hillebrew (ML) - After continuing to launch AAA pitching into the cheap seats when he wasn't getting a free pass at will (35 BB in 90 AB), he finally got the call he's been waiting so long for. We finally have all 8 FOFC players in the bigs. Hillebrew hasn't played yet, but his final AAA numbers were .302/.492/.657 with 18 HR, 54 RBI in 51 games. Royals: Greinke's continued dominance and a much improved offense (thanks to two FOFC guys) vaulted the Royals to 1st place! They are now 26-21 with a 3.5 game lead. David Ginsberg (ML) - Has to be considered a disappointment so far. Was slumping pretty badly (2-5, 6.39 ERA) until finally putting together a couple solid outings in a row. 4-5, 5.45 ERA, 45 K, 21 BB. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Finally showing the bat we've been expecting, hitting .330 in the month with 12 doubles and 27 RBI. Defense is also much improved, with only 2 errors in the first 2 months after compiling 12 last year. .303/.352/.467 with 3 HR, 36 RBI in 46 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - It was a great month for most of our FOFC players, but none was better than Gonzalez. He hit .446 with 12 doubles, 2 triples, and 10 stolen bases. .384/.437/.503 with 1 HR, 27 RBI, 42 R in 46 games. Dave Corson (ML) - Most of our hitters did really well in May, but both of our pitchers struggled. Corson's Jekyll and Hyde routine continues with 3 good starts and 3 awful starts. 3-3, 4.79 ERA, 58 K, 38 BB.

June 2012
Pirates: A 15-12 June record moves the Pirates into 3rd place, but they've lost some ground to the surging Reds. 38-36 (5.5 GB) Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - After missing the first month of the season, Sonny has made up for it by improving on his terrific rookie season. He belted another 5 HR's in June. .347/.425/.582 with 9 HR, 42 RBI in 51 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - June was the worst month yet for the struggling slugger as he only hit 1 HR. The Pirates need him to break out of this slump if they have any hope of catching the Reds. Todd Volmert (ML) - Didn't dominate in June as much as he did in May, but still had a solid month overall, hitting .303 with 4 HR. .310/.356/.544 with 14 HR, 52 RBI in 70 games. Carmen Hillebrew (ML) - A modest debut for Hillebrew. He showcased flashes of his power and eye, but the Pirates are hoping those numbers increase as the season goes along. .270/.348/.440 with 4 HR, 17 RBI in 27 games. Royals: The Royals had a fantastic month, going 18-9 and pulling away in the AL Central. They now have a 9 game lead at 44-30. David Ginsberg (ML) - Finally put together a solid month (3-1, 3.68 ERA) that included a complete game allowing one run and another in which he threw 8 innings of shutout ball. 7-6, 4.79 ERA, 74 K, 33 BB. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Another great month and (along with Gonzalez) is a chief reason why the Royals have the #2 offense in the league despite being dead last in HR's. .316/.374/.475 with 5 HR, 50 RBI in 72 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Came back down to earth a bit after his dominant May, but was still pretty good, hitting .328 with 7 doubles and 3 triples. Currently leads both leagues in runs scored and is tied with Joe Mauer for the highest batting average. .366/.413/.489 with 2 HR, 39 RBI, 64 R in 72 games. Dave Corson (ML) - Continues to struggle with his worst month yet, posting a 5.84 ERA in June. Could find himself out of a rotation spot in the postseason if this continues. 5-5, 5.09 ERA, 85 K, 57 BB.

July 2012
Pirates: A sub-.500 month sends the Pirates further back in the division race. They are now 50-52 (7 GB) Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Another terrific month as he hit .375 with 5 HR and 15 BB's. One can only imagine how bad the Pirates would've been this month without him. .357/.438/.586 with 14 HR, 59 RBI in 78 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Still hitting for a high average, but hit a HR drought in July and has now gone 126 at bats without a HR. .313/.354/.503 with 14 HR, 61 RBI in 96 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Although he hit 5 HR's in the month, he continues to struggle at the plate with a .235 average and .309 OBP in July. .251/.322/.404 with 12 HR, 55 RBI in 98 games. Carmen Hillebrew (ML) - The rookie got on fire in July, hitting 8 HR and walking 18 times. Probably called up too late to get in the ROTY race as Bryce Harper is having a stellar season. .269/.367/.500 with 12 HR, 32 RBI in 54 games. Royals: The Royals continue their remarkable run by going 20-7 in July and now have the best record in baseball. They also have a staggering 17.5 game lead in the AL Central with a record of 64-37. David Ginsberg (ML) - Ginsberg puts another good month together (2-2, 3.77 ERA), including two complete game performances. 9-8, 4.48 ERA, 110 K, 48 BB in 21 starts. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Put together a 20 game hitting streak, which ended in late July. Another solid month where 16 of his 40 hits went for extra bases. Currently leads the league in triples with 9. .325/.373/.496 with 7 HR, 63 RBI in 97 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Another good month (.327) where he even managed to belt a couple homers. Also stole 10 bases and now has 32 for the year. .356/.408/.482 with 4 HR, 55 RBI in 97 games. Dave Corson (ML) - Had his best month in the majors yet, with an ERA of 3.83 and recording double digit strikeouts 3 times. 8-7, 4.69 ERA, 135 K, 86 BB in 21 starts.

Not sure why Joe is struggling so much. His ratings are very high. Just getting some very unlucky dice rolls.

August 2012
Pirates: Moved back over .500 with a solid month, including winning 9 of their last 11. Still within reach of the playoffs at 5 GB in the wildcard race and 6 GB in the division. 65-63 overall. Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - Even Sonny is prone to a slump every now and then. August was a terrible month as he hit .231 with only 2 HR. .322/.398/.519 with 16 HR, 69 RBI in 104 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Still continues to hit for power with another 5 HR, but really struggling to get on base with a .298 OBP in August. .253/.317/.413 with 17 HR, 78 RBI in 124 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - If it wasn't for an injury that kept him out for the last week in August, Todd almost certainly would've won hitter of the month honors. He hit .412 in the month with 5 HR and an insanely good .700 slugging %. .330/.374/.537 with 19 HR, 83 RBI in 115 games. Carmen Hillebrew (ML) - 21 walks in August helped make up for a power drought of 85 at bats without a HR. .277/.387/.454 with 12 HR, 40 RBI in 79 games. Royals: The Royals left the entire AL Central behind with a 17-11 month that gave them a 17.5 game lead. They are now 81-48. David Ginsberg (ML) - Only started 3 games in August due to an injury, but carried a 3.12 ERA and seems to be improving as the season goes along. 10-9, 4.34 ERA, 121 K, 55 BB in 24 starts. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Weakest month since April (.277), but still came away with 21 R and 18 RBI and is a key factor in the Royals amazing season. .315/.360/.476 with 9 HR, 81 RBI in 125 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Retook the lead in the race for the batting crown by hittin .383 in August. Managed 25 RBI, despite not hitting a single HR. .362/.413/.484 with 4 HR, 80 RBI in 125 games. Dave Corson (ML) - Just as it looked like he was improving, had another subpar month. Didn't record double digit strikeouts once and gave up 4 or more runs in 4 of his 5 starts. 9-10, 4.70 ERA, 163 K, 107 BB.

End of Regular Season 2012
Pirates: A 20-14 finish would've given the Pirates a playoff spot, but alas they could only manage 16-18 for an 81-81 finish. They had a solid offense, but were undone by the worst starting pitching in the NL (4.84 ERA). Sonny Ciccarrelli (ML) - It was a very good sophomore season for Sonny. He overcame an early injury and was a very consistent performer for the Pirates. The crazy thing is he still hasn't reached his full power potential .323/.393/.530 with 24 HR, 85 RBI in 137 games. Jolton Joe (ML) - Finally ended his slump and had a nice finish to the season, but the Pirates need him to be way more consistent next season. .277/.344/.434 with 20 HR, 98 RBI in 157 games. Todd Volmert (ML) - Had a big power drought in the middle of the season, but was otherwise a terrific and reliable performer for the Pirates. Only struck out 23 times in 574 at bats. .333/.378/.538 with 25 HR, 99 RBI in 143 games. Carmen Hillebrew (ML) - Finally getting the chance to prove himself this season, he made the most of it with a very strong bat and ability to draw walks. .265/.379/.437 with 17 HR, 58 RBI in 112 games. Royals: Did not slow down at the end, going 21-12 to win the division by 20 games. At 102-60, tied with Rays for best record in baseball. David Ginsberg (ML) - Had a rough start to the season, but started to improved after the all star break and seems to be peaking just as the playoffs begin. 13-11, 4.08 ERA, 158 K, 68 BB in 30 starts. Mike Schaplowski (ML) - Probably the most improved player, Schaplowski had a terrific sophomore season, showing amazing gap power and speed around the basepaths with 50 doubles (tied for league lead) and 10 triples. .333/.384/.524 with 11 HR, 105 RBI in 157 games. David Gonzalez (ML) - Much like his counterpart Schaplowski, Gonzalez isn't known for hitting them over the fence, but gets around the bases very well, finishing with 45 doubles and league leading 12 triples. Also captured the AL batting crown. Potential MVP contender, but did not win any player of the month awards. .368/.418/.499 with 6 HR, 98 RBI, 129 R, 50 SB in 157 games. Dave Corson (ML) - Was probably the victim of bad luck this year with a .329 BABIP. The good news is that his K/9 steadily improved and he finished with 9.27, 5th highest in the league. 12-11, 4.72 ERA, 206 K, 136 BB in 32 starts.

2012 Playoffs - Divisional Round
Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals The Orioles made it to the postseason on the strength of some very strong hitting by Matt Weiters, Josh Bell, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis. Jonathan Papelbon was converted to starter and their best for the season (17-5, 2.23 ERA). Game 1 - (Zach Greinke vs. Dustin McGowan) The Orioles took the early lead on a Josh Bell solo HR, but Royals 2B Alberto Callaspo tied it up with one of his own in the bottom of the 3rd. The Orioles retook the lead in the 4th on a Josh Bell RBI single. That was the last time the Orioles would lead. Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon hit HR in the bottom of the 4th and the Royals continued to rack up runs, including a 6 run 8th inning that made it 13-2. Greinke pitched a complete game, but was touched in the 9th for 3 more meaningless runs. Kansas City 13, Baltimore 5 Game 2 - (David Ginsberg vs. Jonathan Papelbon) Ginsberg was solid until a Nick Markakis double in the 5th put the Orioles up 1-0. They followed that up with a run in the 6th on a fielder's choice to take 2-0 lead. The Royals were unable to get anything going on Jonathan Papelbon until the 7th when solo HR by Alex Gordon and Seth Smith tied the game. Ginsberg was removed in the 8th after issuing a walk to Adam Jones, but the Royals got out of trouble. In the bottom of the 8th, Gonzalez hit a 1 out double, followed by a single that put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Eric Hosmer hit a 3 run HR to give the Royals a 5-2 lead. Joakim Soria came in to close the Orioles out, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead in the series! Kansas City 5, Baltimore 2 Game 3 - (Dave Corson vs. Brian Matusz) Corson was the weak link in the Royals rotation this season and that proved true once again. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd after Schaplowski doubled, moved to 3rd and scored on a fielder's choice. Corson proceeded to allow 2 runs in each of the next 3 innings, before finally being removed in the 4th. The Royals were unable to generate any more offensive threats and the Orioles added some runs in the last two innings to make it a blowout. Baltimore 11, Kansas City 1 Game 4 - (Zach Greinke vs. Dustin McGowan) The Royals were confident with their ace back on the mound. Greinke shut the Orioles down in the first 3 innings, striking out the side in the 3rd. In the 4th inning, David Gonzalez singled a runner home and then later scored on an Alex Gordon single to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. The Orioles get one back in the bottom of the 4th after Adam Jones leadoff triple and a Nick Markakis single. In the 5th inning, the two FOFC players did some damage. Hilton Richardson led off with a single, Schaplowsky added a single of his own. Gonzalez followed with another single that brought Richardson home. Schaplowsky later scored on a fielder's choice for a 4-1 Royals lead. That was all the Royals needed as Greinke continued to dominate, not allowing another run and Mike Gonzalez came in to close things out, giving the Royals a 4-1 victory and a spot in the ALCS!!!!! Kansas City 4, Baltimore 1

2012 Playoffs - ALCS
Texas Rangers vs. Kansas City Royals The Rangers made it on the strength of good starting pitching and a great offense led by MVP candidate Chris Davis (.282, 42 HR, 145 RBI) and great speed from Elvis Andrus and Julio Borbon. Game 1 - (David Ginsberg vs. Derek Holland) Ginsberg gets off to a rough start, allowing a double and three singles in the 2nd inning, but gets out of a jam with only allowing one run. The Royals tie it in the bottom of the 3rd with a David Gonzalez double. In the 4th, Ginsberg walks Chris Davis and gives up a 2 run HR to Ian Kinsler. The Royals offense gets hot in the 5th when Alex Gordon hits a 2 run HR. Then Gonzalez doubles, steals 3rd base, and scored on a sac fly. Later in the same inning with Butler on 1st, Schaplowsky hits a double that scores Butler, giving the Royals a 5-3 lead. Ginsberg settles down, only allowing 2 more baserunners in the next 3 innings. Gonzalez comes in to close it out, but gives up a solo HR. Then Michael Bourn triples and the tying run is on 3rd with 1 out. After a walk, Gonzalez strikes the next two batters to preserve the victory. Kansas City 5, Texas 4. Game 2 - (Dave Corson vs. Tanner Scheppers) Corson gets out of several jams in the first three innings but is able to get out of it each time. In the 4th, the Rangers load the bases with 2 outs and score on a single. Corson gets out without further damage. In the bottom half, Gonzalez singles and steals 2nd base, then scores on a Hosmer single to tie the game up. The Royals take a 3-1 lead in the 5th on a Callaspo 2 run HR. Brett Myers relieves Corson in the 7th and proceeds to give up a double, then an HBP, a sac fly and an RBI single which ties the score at 3. Royals miss an opportunity in the 8th after Gonzalez hits a leadoff triple, but no one can bring him in. In the bottom of the 9th, Callaspo leads off with a double and moves to 3rd on a fielder's choice. Then the Rangers give a free pass to Hilton Richardson, bringing up Mike Schaplowski. On the first pitch, Schaplowski hits a grounder through the gap, scoring Callaspo for the winning run. Kansas City 4, Texas 3. Game 3 - (Zach Greinke vs. Neftali Feliz) The Royals get off to a great start in the 1st as Richardson singles, moves to 3rd on Schaplowsky's double, and scores on a groundout from Gonzalez. Schaplowsky then scores on a single from Billy Butler. In the bottom of the 3rd, Alex Gordon hits a 3 run HR to give the Royals a 5-0 lead. After a shaky 1st inning, Greinke gets in the zone and completely shuts down the Rangers. He pitches 8 innings of shutout ball and the Royals add 3 more runs for an easy victory and a 3-0 lead in the series. Game 4 - (David Ginsberg vs. Derek Holland) Looking to finish the sweep in Texas, the Royals take an early 2nd inning lead when Schaplowsky triples and scores on a passed ball. The Rangers equalize in the bottom half on a run scoring double. The Royals immediately retake the lead on a 2 run HR from Jose Bonilla, but once again the Rangers tie it up in the bottom half with a 2 run HR of their own. After the Royals fail to do anything in the 4th, Ginsberg gives up a single, a run scoring double, and a run scoring single before finally being pulled with the Royals down 5-3. Brett Myers holds the Rangers in check the rest of the way, but the Royals can't get anything going offensively and the Rangers stay alive for one more game. Texas 5, Kansas City 3 Game 5 - (Gil Meche vs. Tanner Scheppers) Meche gets his first start of the postseason. After getting out of the 1st inning, he gives up a 2 run HR to Nelson Cruz in the 2nd. Schaplowsky comes back with an RBI single in the bottom half. The Royals fall further back in the 4th when Chris Davis triples and scores on a sac fly. Control problems haunt Meche in the 5th and he gets pulled after giving up 2 more runs. The floodgates open in the 7th when exhausted long reliever Brett Myers gives up 4 more runs. The Royals finally get something going in the 8th when Schaplowski doubles and scores on a single, then two more hits lead to runs, but it's not nearly enough. Ian Kinsler then belts a 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th for the final runs and Texas stays alive once again. Texas 11, Kansas City 4 Game 6 - (Dave Corson vs. Neftali Feliz) The momentum in the series has changed and the Royals are now hoping to avoid a 7th game not only because of the sudden death nature, but also because they would like to be able to throw Greinke in Game 1 of the World Series. Corson gives up a walk and a single right away, then after two strikeouts Doug Hogan singles in the first two runs of the game. The Rangers add another run on an Elvis Andrus RBI single in the 2nd for a 3-0 lead. The Royals finally get some base runners in the 3rd. A Mike Schaplowsky RBI single and a David Gonzalez sac fly make it a one run game. Things get out of hand in the 5th. An error, a walk, and a single load the bases with 1 out. Josh Hamilton singles in two runners, then Seung-Min Park singles in another. Corson is pulled from the game but Texas has a 6-2 lead. The Royals get one back in the 7th when Gonzalez reaches on a fielder's choice, steals 2nd, and scores on a Butler double. In the 8th inning, the Royals threaten again. Gordon walks, Callaspo singles, and Bonilla is HBP to load the bases with no outs. Richardson singles home a run to make it 6-4. Schaplowsky then hits a line drive double that clears the bases and gives Kansas City the lead! Gonzalez is intentionally walked and Hosmer single loads the bases yet again. Seth Smith comes up to bat and on the first pitch he sees, smacks a grand slam HR for an 11-6 Royals lead! The Royals are going to the World Series! Nate Robertson closes it out and the Royals have won the ALCS 4 games to 2. Kansas City 11, Texas 6.

World Series Game 1: Philadelphia at Kansas City
The Phillies made it to the World Series on the strength of two ace starters in Roy Halladay (21-5, 2.28 ERA) and Brandon Webb (16-5, 2.61 ERA). Their offense is led by Domonic Brown (.319, 22 HR), Chase Utley (.316, 23 HR), and Brandon Moss (.285, 32 HR). The good news for the Royals is that a strained hamstring has sidelined Moss for the World Series. Game 1 - (Zack Greinke vs. Roy Halladay) Top 1st: The Phillies get to Greinke right away with a leadoff single by Tyson Gillies who then scores on a Domonic Brown single. Two more hits load the bases with only 1 out. Leandro Castro hits a single but thankfully only one run scores. Greinke gets Jimmy Rollins and Gerald Laird to fly out to end the inning. the worst news isn't even that Greinke allowed two more runs, but he threw 45 pitches in the 1st inning. Philadelphia 2, Kansas City 0. Bottom 1st: Richardson gets a leadoff single. Schaplowsky flies out, but Gonzalez follows with a single. Butler flies out, but Hosmer walks to load the bases. Seth smith strikes out and the Royals miss a big opportunity. Philadelphia 2, Kansas City 0 Top 2nd: Nick Punto leads off with a single. Greinke finally settles down, striking out the next two batters and getting Brown to pop up. Pitch count now up to 64. Philadelphia 2, Kansas City 0. Bottom 2nd: A Callaspo single is the only thing the Royals can do in this inning. Halladay strikes out two more batters. Philadelphia 2, Kansas City 0 Top 3rd: Greinke's pitch count continues to climb as Utley goes to a full count before drawing a walk. Then Erik Lis hits a 2 run HR to make it a 4-0 game. Greinke gets out without further damage, but not before drawing another walk and increasing his pitch count to 90 after only 3 innings. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 0. Bottom 3rd: Schaplowsky leads things off with a double. Gonzalez flies out, but Billy Butler singles Schaplowsky home. Then a Seth Smith trple scores Butler. Smith gets stranded on 3rd, but the Royals are happy to get 2 back. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 2. Top 4th: Gillies gets another leadoff single. Victorino works the count once again, but grounds out on a fielder's choice. With his pitch count now at 101, Greinke gets Domonic Brown to gound into a much needed double play. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 2. Bottom 4th: Three consecutive singles (including Schaplowsky) loads the bases for the Royals. Gonzalez draws a walk to make it a 1 run game, but billy butler gounds into an inning ending double play. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 3. Top 5th: Greinke continuing to go despite the high pitch count. He gets Utley and Lis to strike out. Leandro Castro smacks it into the left field gap, but is thrown out trying to make it a triple. (Really dumb play!) Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 3 Bottom 5th: After a shaky 4th, Halladay is on fire again. He tallies another strikeout as he sends the Royals down in order. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 3. Top 6th: Greinke gets Jimmy Rollins and Gerald Laird to fly out, but a Nick Punto single finally ends Greinke's day at 124 pitches. Nate Robertson comes in and gets Gillies to ground out. Philadelphia 4, Kansas City 3. Bottom 6th: Callaspo leads off with a single and moves to 2nd on a sac bunt. Hilton Richardson singles, but Callaspo has to hold at 3rd. Schaplowsky comes up with men on 1st and 3rd and smacks a double that scores both runners and gives the Royals the lead! This chases Halladay from the game. John Lanaan comes in and gets Gonzalez and Butler out. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 4. Top 7th: Victorino opens with a single, but Robertson strikes out Brown and gets Utley to fly out. After a wild pitch puts Victorino on 2nd, pinch hitter Bryce Brentz grounds out. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 4. Bottom 7th: Eric Hosmer and Seth Smith walk to open the inning and move to 2nd and 3rd on a sac bunt. Callaspo flies out and the Phillies put Scott Mathieson in to pitch. Jose Bonilla hits a deep fly ball that scores pinch runner Tim Smith. Richardson strikes out to end the inning. Kansas City 6, Philadelphia 4 Top 8th: The Royals top set up man Jim Johnson comes in to pitch. He gets Castro on a fly out, Rollins to strike out, and Gerald Laird to ground out and the Royals are really rolling now. Kansas City 6, Philadelphia 4. Bottom 8th: Schaplowsky flies out. The Phillies bring in Brad Ziegler to pitch and Gonzalez gets on base with a single. Butler follows up with his own single. Gonzalez steals 3rd, then scores on a Seth Smith single. Phillies try to nail Butler at 3rd, but he is safe and Smith goes to 2nd. Alex Gordon singles to score Butler and now the rout is on. Phillies go to their 3rd pitcher of the inning in Danys Baez. Callaspo walks to load the bases, then a Jose Bonilla single scores two runners. Richardson flies out to end the onslaught. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 4. Top 9th: Nick Punto reaches on an error and Gillies singles to put runners at the corners. Victorino flies out, but Brown follows with a walk to load the bases and the Phillies have some hope. Utley hits a grounder to 2nd, which results in a run but also the 2nd out of the inning. Carlos Ruiz smashes a line drive that is nabbed by Callaspo to end the game. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 5. That wasn't a pretty, but it was still a great victory for the Royals. Bonilla was named player of the game, but I think it should've gone to Schaplowski, who went 3 for 5, had 5 total bases, 2 RBI and a run. He is having an excellent postseason overall, hitting .400 with 10 RBI.

World Series Game 2: Philadelphia at Kansas City
(David Ginsberg vs. Brandon Webb) Top 1st: Gillies opens the game by drawing a walk against Ginsberg. After Domonic Brown strikes out, Gillies is caught stealing and Castro grounds out. Philadelphia 0, Kansas City 0 Bottom 1st: Richardson strikes out, followed by Schaplowsky reaching on an error. The Royals could get nothing more going as Gonzalez and Butler both ground out. Philadelphia 0, Kansas City 0 Top 2nd: Ginsberg strikes out Utley, but then gives up a single to Bryce Brentz. Kotchman comes up and draws a walk. After a Laird strikeout, Punto doubles and Brentz scores to give the Phillies an early lead. With Kotchman on 3rd, Ginsberg gets Rollins to pop up. Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 0 Bottom 2nd: Hosmer and Gordon both draw walks in this inning. Callaspo lays down a sac bunt that moves them to 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but Jose Bonilla flies out to end the thread. Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 0 Top 3rd: Ginsberg notches his 4th strikeout to open the inning, but Brown and Castro hit back to back singles to generate another Phillies threat with one out. However, Chase Utley hits a line drive right at Schaplowsky, who flips to Callaspo for the double play. Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 0 Bottom 3rd: Richardson flies out to open the inning. Back to back doubles by Schaplowsky and Gonzalez tie the game up. That's the most the Royals can muster as the next two batters go down easily. Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 1 Top 4th: Kotchman hits a double and moves to 3rd on a fielder's choice, but Ginsberg strikes out Punto to end the inning. Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 1 Bottom 4th: Seth Smith opens the inning with a walk. Webb settles down and gets the next two batters, but Hilton Richardson hits a double that puts Kansas City in the lead! Schaplowsky grounds out to end the inning. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Top 5th: Gordon makes an error on a Rollins grounder. Then Gillies walks to put two runners on. Ginsberg is unfazed as he gets Brown to ground out and strikes out Castro and Utley to end the threat. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Bottom 5th: Not much going on here as Webb easily puts down Gonzalez, Butler, and Hosmer in order. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Top 6th: Crazy inning. Brentz opens with a single. Kotchman then grounds into a double play. Laird follows up with his own single. Then Punto hits it into the gap in left field and Laird tries to score the tying run. Seth Smith guns it home and Laird is..... OUT!. The Phillies have three hits in the inning but come up empty. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Bottom 6th: Smith and Gordon work the count against Webb, but both eventually strike out. Callaspo pops out into right field. Webb seems pretty solid at this point, putting some pressure on Ginsberg to hold the lead. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Top 7th: Ginsberg handles it well, putting down the Phillies in order. At 122 pitches, that will probably be it for the youngster, but he's been great tonight (7 IP, 1 ER, 7K). Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Bottom 7th: Bonilla singles and advances to 2nd on a sac bunt, then moves to 3rd on a fielder's choice. The Phillies pull Webb at 117 pitches and in comes John Lanaan. Gonzalez singles Bonilla home to make it 3-1. After Gonzalez steals 2nd, the Phillies botch a grounder and runners are now at the corners. Eric Hosmer doubles to bring Gonzalez in and make it 4-1. A Seth Smith single adds to the misery for the Phillies as it brings home both Butler and hosmer for a 6-1 lead. Lanaan is mercifully pulled at this point and Danys Baez gets Gordon to fly out. Kansas City 6, Philadelphia 1 Top 8th: Mike Gonzalez comes in to pitch. After striking out Castro, he hits Utley and a runner is on. Brentz flies out to make it 2 outs. Kotchman singles to put another runner on. Then Laird walks and the bases are loaded. Brett Myers comes in for Gonzalez and on a 1-1 pitch, Punto hits a line drive down the right field line that goes for a triple and clears the bases. It is now a close game again at 6-4. Nate Robertson comes in and gets Jimmy Rollins to pop up to... wait, Gonzalez drops the ball and Punto easily scores! The Royals are falling apart. Gillies flies out to end the inning, but alot of damage was done there. Kansas City 6, Philadelphia 5 Bottom 8th: Desperately needing some insurance, the first to Royals are set down quickly by Baez. Then Richardson walks and steals 2nd base. A Schaplowski single brings him home to make it a 2 run game. Gonzalez single to put runners at the corners, but Butler flies out for the 3rd out. Kansas City 7, Philadelphia 5 Top 9th: Joakim Soria (36 Saves, 2.14 ERA) comes in to close things out for the Royals, who are 3 outs from taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Brown grounds out quickly. Then on a 2-1 pitch, Castro smashes a ball that goes 432 ft and makes it a 1 run game. Utley walks and Victorino comes in to pinch run for him. Brentz hits a grounder down the 3rd base line, but Victorino has to halt at 3rd. The Royals curiously decide to pitch to Kotchman instead of putting the double play in effect. Kotchman hits a deep fly ball that easily scores Victorino and ties the game. Luke Hochevar relieves Soria and after a walk to Lis, gets Punto to strike out. The damage has been done and it is now a tie game. Kansas City 7, Philadelphia 7 Bottom 9th: Joe Thatcher comes in to pitch. He strikes out Hosmer and gets Smith to fly out. Alex Gordon lines a double over 1st base and the Royals have the winning run in scoring position. Jeff Bianchi comes in to pinch hit with a chance to win it, but grounds out to shortstop. We are headed to extra innings. Kansas City 7, Philadelphia 7 Top 10th: Hochevar still pitching and looking good. He dispatches Rollins, Gillies, and Brown without much trouble. Where was this relief pitching an inning earlier? Kansas City 7, Philadelphia 7 Bottom 10th: Thatcher also looking good as he strikes out Bonilla on 3 straight pitches, then gets Richardson to pop up. Schaplowsky hits a nice looking single up the middle, but Gonzalez grounds out to end the inning. Kansas City 7, Philadelphia 7 Top 11th: Hochevar continues his good form by getting Castro to strikeout. Then things start to get dicey as Freddy Sanchez singles and Brentz doubles to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Hochevar gets Kotchman in an 0-2 hole, but he battles back and singles on a line drive to left field that gives the Phillies a 1 run lead. Erik Lis comes up and also gets into an 0-2 hole but Hochevar throws a wild pitch that scores another run. What was a 5 run lead in the 8th is now a 2 run deficit in extra innings. Jim Johnson comes in to retire Punto and Rollins. Philadelphia 9, Kansas City 7 Bottom 11th: Phillies send in Brad Ziegler to close it out. Butler grounds out to open the inning, but then Hosmer hits a blooper that drops in for a single. The Royals have some hope with the tying run on base. Smith comes up to bat and hits a grounder right at the shortstop who easily converts it into a 6-4-3 double play. The Phillies even up the series at 1. Philadelphia 9, Kansas City 7 Definitely a heartbreaking loss for the Royals. Ginsberg pitched his heart out, but the bullpen gave it away by allowing 6 runs in the 8th and 9th. If they don't win the series, the Royals are likely to look at this as the one that got away. Punto was named player of the game for his bases clearing triple in the 8th.

World Series Game 3 - Kansas City at Philadelphia
(Dave Corson vs. Wandy Rodriguez) Top 1st: Gonzalez opens the game with a triple and is immediately brought home on a sac fly. Just like that, the Royals are up 1-0. Butler and Bonilla fly out to end the inning. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0. Bottom 1st: Corson shows off his fastball by blowing one past Gillies for a strikeout. He also shows off his control issues by walking Castro. Brown then singles, but Castro is thrown out trying to go to 3rd. Brown does move up to 2nd on the throw which is key, because Utley hits a line drive single that scores Brown and ties things up. Lis follows up with a single to put runners at the corners, but Corson gets Rollins to ground out to end the inning. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 1. Top 2nd: A one out Richardson double gives the Royals another scoring opportunity. Gordon flies out and the Smith is intentionally walked so they can pitch to Corson, who grounds out to end the inning. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 1. Bottom 2nd: Corson starting to look like Rick Vaughn out there as he issues back to back walks to Laird and Punto on only 9 pitches. Rodriguez tries a sac bunt, but the lead runner is cut down at 3rd. No problem for the Phillies however, because Gillies sends over the right field fence for a 3 run HR. Corson then walks the next two batters, making it 4 walks in one inning. After a fielder's choice, Lis singles to score Castro and Corson is removed from the game after 1 and 2/3rds. Another terrible postseason outing for the youngster. Gonzalez comes in and gets Rollins out. Philadelphia 5, Kansas City 1 Top 3rd: Royals look stunned and they come out lifeless in the 3rd inning as Gonzalez, Callaspo, and Butler go down on 8 total pitches. Philadelphia 5, Kansas City 1 Bottom 3rd: Laird walks, but Punto hits a hard grounder to 3rd and they go around the horn for the double play. Rodirguez pops up to left. Philadelphia 5, Kansas City 1 Top 4th: The Royals come out more inspired this inning, opening with three straight singles (including one by Schaplowsky) to load the bases. Gordon's fly out is too short to score the runner and Smith strikes out. However, Eric Hosmer has a great at bat where he climbs out of an 0-2 hole and eventually draws a walk to score the Royals 2nd run of the game. Gonzalez hits a deep fly ball that looks like it has a chance but is eventually caught in center-right. The Royals get 1 back, but they needed more there. Philadelphia 5, Kansas City 2 Bottom 4th: Gillies singles, steals 2nd, and moves to 3rd on a fielder's choice. He then scores on a double from Brown to extend the Phillies lead. No more damage as Utley flies out and Lis grounds out. Philadelphia 6, Kansas City 2 Top 5th: Callaspo opens the inning with a double, but the next two batters strike out. Schaplowsky comes up with a chance to close the gap, but he pops up. Philadelphia 6, Kansas City 2 Bottom 5th: Rollins extends the lead further by opening the inning with a solo HR. Laird follows with a single, but Robertson gets the next three batters out. Philadelphia 7, Kansas City 2 Top 6th: Rodriguez is really controlling the game now. He gets Richardson, Gordon, and Smith out for an easy 1-2-3 inning. The Royals are running out of opportunities. Philadelphia 7, Kansas City 2 Bottom 6th: Myers comes in to pitch. He strikes out Castro and Brown before Utley singles. Lis pops up with a runner on and the Royals finally get out of an inning without allowing a run. Philadelphia 7, Kansas City 2 Top 7th: 7 pitches! That's all Rodriguez needed to dispatch pinch hitter Luis Gonzalez, David Gonzalez, and Callaspo in order. Royals seem to have given up. Philadelphia 7, Kansas City 2 Bottom 7th: Hochevar comes in to pitch. Rollins walks, then moves to 3rd on a Laird single. On a 3-2 pitch, Punto singles to shallow right and scores Rollins. A Rodriguez sac bunt puts runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, but Hochevar is able to put down Gillies and Castro to avoid any further damage. Philadelphia 8, Kansas City 2 Top 8th: The Royals get their first baserunner since the 5th inning when Bonilla singles with 1 out. No concern for Rodriguez who continues to dominate by getting Schaplowsky to fly out and Richardson to strike out. Philadelphia 8, Kansas City 2 Bottom 8th: Dave Davidson comes in to pitch and does a pretty good job by getting Brown, Utley, and Lis out on 9 pitches. Philadelphia 8, Kansas City 2 Top 9th: Rodriguez stays in to complete the game. The Royals never threaten as Gordon flies out and Rodriguez then strikes out the final two batters to cap off a terrific performance. The Phillies now have a 2-1 lead in the series. Philadelphia 8, Kansas City 2 Corson continues to have a dreadful postseason (0-2, 9.19 ERA), which is worrisome for the Royals as he could potentially be a game 7 starter if they don't pitch Greinke on short rest in game 4. The youngster obviously has a bright future ahead of him, but he's been thrust on the big stage before reaching his full potential.

World Series Game 4 - Kansas City at Philadelphia
(Gil Meche vs. Roy Halladay) Different strategies here as the Phillies prepare to throw Halladay three times if necessary, while the Royals give Greinke an extra day of rest and will only get to use him twice. If this goes 7 games, it will be Halladay vs. Corson, a very precarious situation for the Royals. Top 1st: Richardson gets the Royals off to a great start by opening the game with a solo HR. Schaplowsky and Gonzalez then fly out, while Hosmer grounds out. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 1st: After getting Gillies out, Meche walks Castro. Brown hits into a fielder's choice and steals 2nd, but Meche gets him to pop up to end the inning. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 2nd: Halladay has recovered from the early HR and is now looking very good, getting Smith, Gordon, and Callaspo to ground out in order. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 2nd: Meche is also looking strong as he gets Lis and Rollins to pop up and induces an easy grounder from Punto. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 TOp 3rd: Halladay strikes out Bonilla and Meche. Richardson works him to a full count, but grounds out on the deciding pitch. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 3rd: Meche continues to roll, getting Laird to pop up, striking out Halladay, then getting Gillies to pop up. He threw 10 pitches this inning and 8 were strikes. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 4th: Schaplowsky strikes out, but the Royals finally get another baserunner when Gonzalez singles to right. He moves to 2nd on a fielder's choice, but Smith is unable to bring him home as he grounds out weakly to 2nd. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 4th: Castro grounds out. Brown hits a line drive that looks dangerous but it goes right to Gonzalez. Utley strikes out to end the inning. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 5th: With 1 out, Callaspo doubles and moves to 3rd on a ground out from Bonilla. Unfortunately, that brings up Meche who grounds out to 3rd. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 5th: Phillies finally get something going against Meche. Lis opens with a single. Rollins lays down a sac bunt to move him to 2nd. Punto works the count full and belts a single to Center, but Lis is pretty slow and is held up at 3rd. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Laird flies out and Halladay strikes out to end the threat. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 6th: With 2 outs, Gonzalez comes up with a single through the middle. Hosmer follows up with a double and Gonzalez quickly flies around 3rd and scores without a throw. Smith strikes out to end the inning. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 6th: Gillies opens with a single, but the Phillies don't do much with it as Castro grounds into a fielder's choice and then gets caught stealing. Brown pop up for the 3rd out. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 0 Top 7th: Halladay has a smooth inning, only needing 8 pitches to take care of Gordon, Callaspo, and Bonilla. This has been a pretty good pitcher's duel. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 7th: Meche begins to struggle a bit. He walks Utley and Lis to open the inning. Rollins tries to lay down a sac bunt, but he pops it up and Bonilla grabs it with the 1st out. victorino comes in to pinch hit and draws the 3rd walk of the inning. The bases are now loaded, but the Royals have kept Meche in. He digs in and gets Laird to pop up. The Phillies curiously do not pinch hit for Halladay and he also pops up to end the inning. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 0 Top 8th: Fiorentino comes in to pinch hit for Meche, whose day is done after a fantastic performance. After a groundout, Richardson singles and steals 2nd base. Schaplowsky and Gonzalez are unable to bring him in as they both ground out. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 8th: Mike Gonzalez come in to pitch. He gets Gillies out, but a single by Castro and double by Brown put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Utley hits a line drive over 3rd base that scores Castro, but once again the Phillies have to hold a runner at 3rd. This would be key as Lis strikes out and Rollins pops up to preserve Kansas City's lead. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Top 9th: Thatcher comes in to pitch for Halladay. He makes the most of his appearance by striking out Hosmer, Seth, and Gordon. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 Bottom 9th: Joakim Soria gets a chance to redeem himself for blowing the game 2 save. Brentz gets ahead in the count, but pops up. Kotchman comes in to pinch hit and grounds out. The final chance for the Phillies is pinch hitter Freddy Sanchez, but Soria strikes him out and the Royals have tied the World Series at 2 games each. Kansas City 2, Philadelphia 1 The strategy of holding Greinke back seems to have paid off for the Royals as Meche put in a terrific performance. Now they have Greinke and Ginsberg going back to back with a chance to clinch the series. One has to question Phillies decisions in this one. Twice they stranded a runner on 3rd after not sending him home. They also didn't pinch hit for Halladay in the 7th when the bases were loaded.

World Series Game 5 - Kansas City at Philadelphia
(Zack Greinke vs. Brandon Webb) Top 1st: Richardson opens the game with a bunt attempt that surprisingly works and he is safe! Schaplowsky follows up with a single, but Richardson falls asleep on the basepaths and gets caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd. Gonzalez flies out, but Hosmer follows up with a single to put two runners on. Seth Smith hits a line drive into the right field gap and scores Schaplowsky to give Kansas City another early lead. This is the 4th out of 5 games where the Royals have scored the first run. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 1st: Greinke comes out strong, getting Gillies and Castro to ground out and then forcing a weak pop up from Brown. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 2nd: Webb settles down and gets Callaspo, Bonilla, and Greinke to ground out in order. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 2nd: Both pitchers are rolling now. Greinke just needs 9 pitches to put Utley, Lis, and Rollins down. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 3rd: Richardson strikes out, followed by ground outs from both Schaplowsky and Gonzalez. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 3rd: Punto singles for the Phillies 1st baserunner of the game, but then promptly gets caught trying to steal 2nd. Laird pops up and Webb grounds out. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 4th: Hosmer and seth go down quickly. Gordon actually works the count and gets ahead at 3-1, but Webb gets him to ground out weakly to 1st. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 4th: The pitching duel continues as Greinke sends the Phillies down in order. He's now faced the minimum through 4 innings. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 5th: The bottom of the order goes down 1-2-3, including strikeouts of Bonilla and Greinke. After giving up 2 hits and a walk in the 1st inning, Webb hasn't allowed a single base runner. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 5th: Greinke continues to match Webb by striking out Utley and Lis. Rollins tries to work the count, but grounds out on a 2-2 pitch. Kansas City 1, Philadelphia 0 Top 6th: Royals offense finally comes alive. Richardson doubles and scores on a Schaplowsky single. Gonzalez then works it to a full count and fouls off several pitches before nailing one into the right field gap that goes for a double and scores Schaplowsky. Webb regroups and gets 2 strikeouts and a ground out to avoid any further damage. Kansas City 3, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 6th: Greinke's streak of facing the minimum batters ends when Gordon bobbles an easy pop up, allowing Laird to reach. Greinke still gets through the inning unscathed. Kansas City 3, Philadelphia 0 Top 7th: Webb still in the game. He gets Callaspo to ground out, but Bonilla singles. Greinke fails to bunt him over and Webb is replaced for Lanaan. A Richardson single puts 2 runners on, but Schaplowsky fails to bring them in. Kansas City 3, Philadelphia 0 Bottom 7th: Castro is patient and forces Greinke's first walk of the game. Brown smashes Greinke's very next pitch 427 ft for a 2 run HR. Utley follows up with a solo HR and suddenly we have a tie game. Greinke remains in the game and gets the next three batters out, but that inning really hurt. Kansas City 3, Philadelphia 3 Top 8th: Gonzalez opens with a single and moves to 2nd after Butler walks. The next two batters go down, but Callaspo singles with 2 outs to score Gonzalez and give the Royals the lead again. Bonilla walks to load the bases, but pinch hitter (for Greinke) Bianchi grounds out on the first pitch. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 3 Bottom 8th: Jim Johnson comes in to pitch to Laird and strikes out. Then Robertson comes in, gets Victorino to ground out and Gillies to pop up. The Royals are 3 outs from a 3-2 lead in the series. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 3 Top 9th: Mathieson comes in to pitch and he wastes very little time. Richardson, Schaplowsky, and Gonzalez all go down on 8 pitches. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Bottom 9th: Joakim Soria comes in to close it out, but those hopes are dashed quickly when Costra leads off the inning with a solo HR. Now the Royals are just hoping Soria can get them to extra innings. He does as Brown, Utley, and Lis go down rather harmlessly. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Top 10th: After 2 quick outs, the Royals get 2 baserunners. Bonilla comes up with a chance to put the Royals ahead, but he grounds out to 1st. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Bottom 10th: In a similar situation, the Phillies get 2 baserunners with 2 outs. They also fail to bring them in when Gillies pops up to end the inning. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Top 11th: Thatcher now in to pitch. The Royals do not threaten this inning as Fiorentino, Richardson, and Schaplowsky go down in order. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Bottom 11th: Dave Davidson comes in for Soria. Castro draws a walk and moves to 2nd on Brown's single. Utley flies out. Then Lis hits a potential walk off single, but yet again the Phillies do not send the runner. How many times has that happened in this series? Castro actually has really good speed. Either way, The Royals breathe a sigh of relief, and Davison gets Rollins and Kotchman out with the bases loaded. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Top 12th: Butler singles, but that's all Kansas City can do in the 12th inning as Thatcher gets out of the inning only having to throw 9 pitches. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Bottom 12th: Ruiz opens with a walk. The Phillies do not pinch hit for Thatcher and instead ask him to sac bunt, which goes horribly wrong when Ruiz is cut down at 2nd. Davidson gets Gillies and Thatcher to ground out to send the game to the 13th. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Top 13th: Ziegler comes in to pitch, making the Thatcher sac bunt an even more curious decision. Bonilla singles with 1 out. Pinch hitter AJ Pierzynski flies out, but Richardson follows up with a walk to put 2 runners on. Schaplowsky gets two a full count, but strikes out swinging. Kansas City 4, Philadelphia 4 Bottom 13th: Brett Myers comes in to pitch the 13th. Brown hits a line drive up the middle, but stops at 1st. Myers gets Utley to strike out looking. However, on the very next pitch Erik Lis slams a 2 run walk off HR over the center field wall. The Phillies take a 3-2 lead in the series. Philadelphia 6, Kansas City 4 That was certainly a devastating loss for the Royals. Greinke was dominating until it all fell apart in one inning. Even then, they had a 9th inning lead for the 4th time in the series, but are now only 2-2 in such situations. Now they have to win two consecutive games without their star ace on the mound.

This is what it comes down to. If the Royals are going to win the World Series, they will be relying on two FOFC pitchers to do it. Ginsberg is scheduled to pitch game 6 and if there is a game 7, it will be the much-maligned Dave Corson.

World Series Game Six - Philadelphia at Kansas City
(David Ginsberg vs. Wandy Rodriguez) Top 1st: Ginsberg gets into early trouble as Gillies opens with a single, and then with 1 out Castro hits another one. With 2 men on an 1 out, he gets Utley to strike out and Brentz to ground out to get out of the jam. Bottom 1st: Gonzalez opens with a hard hit single into left field. Callaspo flies out deep to center and Gonzalez manages to tag up and make it to 2nd. You don't see that every day. Butler follows with a double that scores Gonzalez and now the Royals have scored the first run in 5 out of 6 series games. Butler follows up with another double to make it 2-0. Schaplowsky hits a single into left and Bonilla scores standing up. Rodriguez finally gets the 2nd out by getting Richardson to pop up. With a runner still on, Hosmer hits a home run that barely clears the right field wall. Rodriguez's misery is finally over when he strikes out Smith. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 0. Top 2nd: The Phillies get one back quickly as Kotchman takes the 1-1 pitch over the center field wall (418 ft.) for a solo HR. Ginsberg goes through alot of pitches in this inning, but he does get Laird and Punto to strike out, and the inning ends on a Rollins grounder. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 1. Bottom 2nd: The Phillies bring in Chad Durbin to pitch, so Rodriguez day is done after only 1 inning and 5 ER. Durbin strikes out Gordon, then gets groundouts from Gonzalez and Callaspo. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 1. Top 3rd: Ginsberg puts a 2-2 fastball right past Gillies for a strikeout. He gets an 0-2 count on Brown, who foils off several pitches before hitting one that clears the left field wall. Ginsberg starts to struggle a bit. He throws 3 straight balls to Castro for a 3-0 count. However, he manages to fight back and get Castro swinging on a 3-2 pitch. Utley flies out to end the inning. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 2. Bottom 3rd: With 1 out, Bonilla walks. A Schaplowsky single puts runners at the corners. However, Durbin is able to retire Richardson and Hosmer on fly balls to end the threat. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 2. Top 4th: Brentz grounds out and Kotchman pops up and it only takes 3 Ginsberg pitches to get the first 2 outs. Laird battles an 0-2 count with a couple foul balls, but eventually strikes out. Kansas City 5, Philadelphia 2. Bottom 4th: Smith and Gordon open with singles and Durbin's day is over. Mathieson comes in to pitch and walks Gonzalez on 4 straight pitches. Then a passed ball scores Smith. Callaspo follows hitting one over the right field fence for a 3 run HR. Mathieson finally gets a couple outs by inducing grounders from Butler and Bonilla. Schaplowsky singles and then Richardson belts the 3-2 pitch that hits the right field wall and scores Shaplowsky. Durbin's day is done. Ziegler comes in to pitch and gets Hosmer out on a fly ball. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Top 5th: Ginsberg looking really good now, mowing down the Phillies in order, including a strikeout of Gillies. I would say the lead is insurmountable, but we've seen the Royals blow leads in this series before. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Bottom 5th: Smith and Gordon are issued back to back walks, but a Gonzalez grounder is turned into a double play. With a runner on 3rd, Callaspo grounds out. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Top 6th: Brown leads off with a double, but that's the only thing the Phillies can get going against Ginsberg in this inning as he gets Castro, Utley, and Brentz in order. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Bottom 6th: The Phillies manage to get through an inning without any threats after a strikeout of Butler, and groundouts from Bonilla and Schaplowsky. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Top 7th: With 2 outs, Punto draws a walk. Rollins hits a grounder right to Schaplowsky, but he bobbles it and now 2 runners are on. Gillies hits a grounder to Callaspo, who makes the play for the final out. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Bottom 7th: Ryan Madson comes in to pitch. He gets both Richardson and Hosmer on strikeouts, then gets Smith to pop up. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 2. Top 8th: Brown opens the inning by taking a 1-2 pitch 411 ft for a solo HR. Castro follows with a single, then scores when a grounder gets past Schaplowsky for his 2nd error of the game. Ginsberg's day is done. He pitched very well until the 8th. Johnson comes in and gets Kotchman and Laird on groundouts. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 4. Bottom 8th: Lanaan comes in to pitch and after a couple battles, he gets Gordon and Gonzalez to strikeout. Callaspo hits a promising fly ball into deep center, but it's caught for the 3rd out. Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 4. Top 9th: The Royals have a 9th inning lead for the 5th time in 6 games. Even 6 runs doesn't feel comfortable after past failures. Johnson gets Punto and Rollins on back to back pitches and just like that, the Royals are 1 out away from forcing game 7. Gillies keeps the Phillies alive with a single. Brown follows up with a double that scores Gillies. Castro then hits a deep fly ball that looks problematic, but Gonzalez puts it away for the final out and we are going to game 7! Kansas City 10, Philadelphia 5. The Royals got sloppy in the field, but thankfully not until after they had already built a huge lead. Ginsberg had great run support and pitched well enough to hold on to the massive lead. He's had a pretty solid postseason (2-1, 3.82 ERA) and should become an ace starter in the next couple years.
