Roster Move

Kevin Correia suffered an inflamed elbow and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks, so we place him on the 15 day DL and recall Josh Geer from AAA. He had pitched well there so hopefully he is ready to make a dent in the bigs after a not so good opening to the year.

Ugh. I hit into 5 DP's today. Unreal. I just can't seem to drive the ball with this team. The only guy who hits the ball hard is Gonzalez, while everyone else bloops it it feels like. I really don't know what to do besides be patient until I get my guys in and then go from there. Frustrating though.

Gonzalez had 2 hits, as did Hundley, though Hundley had a solo bomb to CF to give us our only run.

Derek Holland goes 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K for the L.

Ryan Dempster goes 6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 K for the W.

We put up 4 in the first, but then don't score again until the 9th and we drop a tough one 6-5 to the Cubbies. Hundley had 2 more RBI today as he continues to mash and will be rewarded by hitting clean up in our next series vs the Reds.

Chris Young goes 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K for the L.

Sean Marshall goes 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K for a ND.

Dickerson has 5 RBI for the Reds, and Encarnacion has the other 2, and we fall 7-3, even though we had 15 hits. Gonzalez goes 4-5, and Headley and Kouzmanoff both have 3 hits, but it's not enough for us to do any damage.

A 6 run 5th puts us out of our misery today. We had 10 hits but again, 3 runs. Plus 3 errors didn't help. Gonzalez raised his average to .320 with 2 more hits, and Hairston had 2 RBI, but we just couldn't do much with RISP which is the story of our season.

37 combined hits today, as the Giants pound out 20 to our 17, but the Giants got to our pen and pull out the 12-11 victory.

Kouzmanoff had 4 hits, including a HR and 5 RBI, while Gonzalez had 2 hits and a HR with 2 RBI. Headley also went yard but it just wasn't enough as our pitching has picked a great time to totally implode.

Derek Holland goes 4 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K for the ND.

It takes 11 innings, but Brian Giles hits his 2nd walk off HR of the season to give us a much needed 2-0 win. Our pen held up for 3 innings of 2 hit ball, and Chris Young threw a gem to give us the innings we needed from our starter.

Giles hits another HR, and Cabrera has 2 RBI, but we can only muster 5 hits, even after SF had 3 errors, and we lost 8-3. Kouzmanoff hits into another DP, which is pretty much his MO these days. We have too many guys with no speed and it might be time to make a change or two.

Chad Gaudin goes 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K for the L.

San Diego makes two big deals

The San Diego Padres made two trades today. One massive trade, one minor trade and a huge promotion.

The big news of the day was the Padres trading RF Brian Giles and one of their top prospects, 1B Kyle Blanks to the Tampa Bay Rays for SP Wade Davis. Davis is considered a top 5 prospect by the Rays but their surplus of arms made this deal work. Blanks will be a future DH for the Rays, and Giles gives them a Vet in the OF that they need. Davis will go to AAA but could be called up at any time.

The second move of the day saw the Rays send CF Jody Gerut to the White Sox for minor league SP Kyle McCullough. McCullough will also head to AAA.

The big news is that this deal opened up the door for OF Kellen Kulbacki to head up the big club where he will be the new starting RF.

Cha Seung Bak (0-1, 9.64 ERA) vs Rich Harden (5-1, 1.93 ERA)

CHN 8 - SD 7

Our bullpen implodes, allowing 5 runs over the last two innings, punctuated by a blown save from Heath Bell to allow the Cubs to steal a victory in a game when we destroyed Rich Harden.

Gonzalez had 3 hits including a HR and 3 RBI, and Kulbacki's MLB debut saw him have 2 hits, but sadly it also saw him debut in a losing effort, though no fault of his own.

Another tough one as we just keep allowing huge innings to good teams. Today it was a 5 run 6th that did us in.

Kouzmanoff had a HR and 2 RBI, and Kulbacki had 2 more hits, but we're just not able to driving in the clutch runs when we need them.

Trades Around the League

I forgot to check the League Roundup so these deals happened before the ones I made.

Toronto traded RP Brandon League to Texas for SP Kevin Millwood.

Arizona traded C John Hester & RP Tom Gordon to Florida for RP Leo Nunez and 3B Emilio Bonifacio.

Detroit traded LF Carlos Guillen to Colorado for RP Huston Street.

The offense was clicking today putting up runs in 5 of 8 innings, and Adrian Gonzalez had 3 RBI, while Kulbacki had 2 doubles and 2 RBI to give him 6 hits in 3 games. 6 players total accounted for our 9 RBI which is a step in the right direction. We've seen this before though so it means nothing if we can't do it consistently.

Our pitching is just miserable. It's just pathetic and has to be addressed. Obviously dealing Peavy was a blow but not even he could fix what this staff is.

Kulbaki doubles again and has an RBI, and Headley has 2 himself, but there wasn't much else of note besides we got run badly.

Kulbacki continues his hit streak to start his career with another hit, but after our first inning run we were shutdown the rest of the way out. When we pitch somewhat okay, we don't hit and when we mash, we don't pitch. I'd just love to see a 12-0 game somewhere.

We get a big 7th, scoring 6 runs, to push us over the hump and get us a much needed win. Gonzalez drives in 2 and Headley drives in 3. Kulbacki got a night off and ended up pinch hitting, but he walked to end his hit streak. Regardless, we won and we needed it badly.

Well we won it in the 9th, but we got lucky. Gonzalez, Kouzmanoff and Blanco knock in runs for us, and our pitching holds up for us to get the win in a game we had to have. It's unacceptable to lose back to back to this Rockies team. So we close out May with a win. Hopefully June isn't as terrible.

Our AA team is sitting pretty at 30-17. Cedric Hunter was sent down to AA to regain his form, and is hitting .272 with 3 HR and 13 RBI and will probably be promoted to AAA around July. Just needed to clear his head.

Cutter Dykstra, now the 1B in AA with Blanks gone has exploded hitting .316 with 5 HR and 29 RBI.

Jaff Decker is continuing to mash himself, hitting .318 with 6 HR and 25 RBI. This 19 year old is special, that's for sure.

Matt Latos is pitching well, with a 3.83 ERA to go with a 4-3 record.

RP Gabe DeHoyos is a remarkable 6-1 with a 1.26 ERA in 24 appearances.

Our AAA team in Portland is currently 25-24. Justin Smoak has struggled, hitting .235 with only 2 HR and 24 RBI. I might move him down to AA like Hunter to clear his head.

SP Cesar Ramos is 4-1 with a 2.24 ERA, and Wade Davis is 3-3 with a 4.08 ERA.

We lose a tough 13 inning game to the Rockies. Only 7 hits in 13 innings does that to you though. Headley had 2 RBI and Kouzmanoff added the 3rd one but we couldn't hold them in the 13th and lose a series to the worst team in baseball.

Adrian Gonzalez had 3 hits, and Kulbacki has 2 hits and 2 RBI, but Ryan Howard's 3 hit, 4 RBI night and a strong start from Hamels was too much for the Padres to overcome. We tried late to make a dent with a 2 run 8th, but only mustered 2 runs in the 9th to fall short.

Mitchell Croft: Croft is a hard throwing RHP who has great stamina, though currently lacks ideal control. At only 19 he is expected to develop in AA for two seasons, before having a shot at the big club. I love his potential. He could be a stud. He signed a 3 year contract for us.

Cha-Seung Ye: The 21 year old catcher was a pick I didn't plan on making but he fell to us and I couldn't not pull the trigger. He has a ton of power, and decent speed. Behind the plate he is adequate but could turn into a solid defensive catcher. He signed a 3 year contract.

Van Kang: Kang is a 19 year old CF who will probably project into a corner OF or 1B with his lack of speed. He has a ton of power, but needs to work on his contact and vision at the dish. He signed a 3 year contract.

Omar Coco: The 20 year 2B is fast as hell and slick defensively. Other guys were better offensively, but I think he can be a great role player for us down the line. He signed a 5 year deal.

Radahmes Nieves: The 18 year old SS is a solid player. He was taken primarily because he is only 18 and has room for growth. Chances are he won't ever make our club with Andrus ahead of him but the hope he is can become an asset to trade. He signed a 4 year deal.

I have made a decision to advance to the offseason at this point, namely because my team is just so horrible it will be beyond frustrating to play these games.

Resigning Players

- We resign Chad Gaudin to a 5 year/28.9 million dollar deal. Gaudin turned it on the last half of the year and finished with an era just above 4. This could be a steal for us.

- We resign C Nick Hundley to a 5 year/4.8 million dollar deal. A total steal for a decent catcher with some pop.

- We resign SS Everth Cabrera to a 3 year/1.2 million dollar deal.

We also hire new 1B and pitching coaches.

The Mets sign RF Jermaine Dye to a 4 year/43.21 million dollar deal to give them a big time bat in the middle of their order.

The Cardinals signed CL Billy Wagner to a 4 year/23.76 million dollar deal. Talk about being the best in a shitty market.

Arizona signed SS Orlando Cabrera to a 2 year/19.16 million dollar deal.

Atlanta signs LF Carl Crawford to a 9 year/78.39 million dollar deal. For sure the best signing off the offseason.

Arizona also signed 1B Jim Thome to a 3 year/23.70 million dollar deal.

- San Diego signs OF Elijah Dukes to a 4 year/8.9 million dollar deal. Dukes gives us versatility at all 3 OF spots, as well as an ability to play 1B.

- We resign a bunch of guys for minor league depth. We do make one significant move locking up Elvis Andrus for 3 years/17.38 million. Better to do it now before it's too late.

Looking at my roster this year, I made a few mistakes thinking I had more MI depth then I did, I let guys go, and am now stuck with a rookie in 4th round pick Omar Coco has our utility man. I'll make a deal eventually but early on he shouldn't play much.

Our staff is meh, our pen looks good, and our offense is a mixed bag.

Dukes is going to be our starting CF for now. His ratings look great. I hope him getting a chance helps.

Justin Smoak will make the opening day roster. We'll see how that goes.

I'm not too optimistic coming off a 74-88 year, but the pieces seem to be in place.

Game 1: Padres (0-0) vs Astros (0-0)
Chris Young (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Roy Oswalt (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

HOU 1 - SD 0

So frustrating. We held them to 3 hits but one of them was a Roy fucking Oswalt solo bomb. Just ugh. We had 5 hits, 2 from Andrus, 2 from Headley and 1 from Dukes, but nothing came of it. This offense is anemic. So sad.

Chris Young goes 8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 K for the L.

Roy Oswalt goes CG, 5 H, 6 K for the W.

Final Line

HOU: 1 - 3 -0
SD: 0 - 5 - 0

Headley hits a solo HR and Andrus hits well yet again, but from 9 hits we can only get the 1 run. I am seriously wondering if this offense will be this bad all year. The talent is there, but it is young. Who knows I guess.

Chad Gaudin goes 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 for the L.

Wandy Rodriguez goes 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K for the W.

HOU 7 - SD 4

Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Smoak hit 2 run HR's, and we have 9 hits, but again we can't score runs like we need to, and Josh Geer and Derek Holland scuffle when we need them to clamp down to give Houston a season opening sweep.

Josh Geer goes 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K for the L.

Pedro Martinez goes 7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5 K for the W.

Dukes, Kulbacki and Gonzalez knock in 9th inning runs but sadly waited until the 9th to do anything. We score 3 runs on 4 hits. Just pathetic.

Adrian Gonzalez has a 3 run HR, and Andrus knocks in a run. Ho hum, we suck.

We get 15 hits and hold LA to 4. Generally good things happen that way and today was no different. Dukes hits a HR and Hundley knocks out 3 bombs with 5 RBI in a career effort for him. Gonzalez also had 3 hits. A nice complete effort tonight.

Chris Young goes 8 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K for the W.

Wang goes 3 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K for the L.

Finally I score some runs in a game I played. Adrian Gonzalez mashed a grand slam, Elijah Dukes hit a solo bomb, and 4 other guys knocked in runs to complete a very impressive all around effort today. I was able to hit the ball hard. Maybe this lineup isn't as bad as I thought. A lot of speed that's for sure.

Chad Gaudin goes 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K for the W.

Ublado Jiminez goes 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 K for the L.

Adrian Gonzalez homers again, but our pen faltered late to cost us a game we should've won. Geer pitched well but Serrano was terrible today.

Josh Geer goes 6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K for the ND.

Jason Marquis goes 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER , 3 BB, 5 K for the ND.

The pen blows another late lead which is just killing me. Gonzalez has another RBI, and we had 8 hits, but again, we didn't score nearly enough and the pen was bad. At least our starters are doing solid.

Kevin Correia goes 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K for a ND.

Greg Smith goes 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K for a ND.

We were down 1 in the 7th, and the pen gives up 4 more runs. It's becoming a broken record with this team. Padilla pitched well enough, only 3 runs in 6 innings, but Perdomo gave up 4 runs without getting an out.

Things will change.
