Week 6: 12.6-12.82
The top four have stablized, with Missoui, Clemson, Washington and Colorado State forming the obvious elite. That's a facetious statement, if muns reads this. Code:
12.8.82: vs Syracuse (4-3) The Orangemen were a NIT team when the tournament started in 1950, and were so for four years. They have not made the postseason since 1959; they have never made the NCAA. Coach Merle Patterson (93-149) is feeling the heat, as he should. The team was one of the founding members of the Big East last season, and did next to nothing. They have three starters back from last year's team, led by guard Arthur Mulkey (11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds), who is averaging 20.3 points this year. There is a lot of experience here, but the experience is being a losing program. And, truth be told, they are 4-3...but they have been outscored this season. Forward Lamont Widdle has been a positive efficiency player for the Orangemen. He is averaging 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.0 steals a game. Jack finds Hulett for a basket on the first possession. Woods and Hulett both foul, then Woods scores. Jack scores to make it 6-3, before Mulkey ties it with a three. Woods suffers his second foul, sending Sandy in, who fouls immediately. At some point, Arlie Jennings has to realize he can't employ the aggressive defense he did last year. With fifteen minutes left, it's 8-6. Jack finds Hulett for another score; his line is 2-0-2 so far. Hulett fouls again, and Jorge Bui hits a three. Porter Ali hits one to tie it at 11. Davis tips in a Jack miss, then Jack scores to make it 15-13. Jack comes out with 12 minutes left, and Mulkey (eight points) scores to tie it. Jack comes back a minute later and gets a block. These teams are horrible. Syracuse is shooting 50%, but they have seven turnovers. GW is shooting 33%, 14% from 3, and has six fouls. Come on. Jack has four points...he is not shooting. Syracuse finally takes a 17-15 lead on Lamont Windle's score. This feels like a one-run game; in other words, these guys are not playing basketball. Hulett drills a three. He has seven points. It's 21-18 with 2:53 left. Jack scores...he has a 6-1-2 line. Very meek half from him. Of course, he had that last game. Jack then hits a three, and stares me down for writing that. The half ends 23-21. Syracuse had 13 turnovers, but GW is shooting poorly, and, I don't believe, shot a single free throw. Jack has a 9-1-2 line, and Syracuse outrebounded GW 20-13. Mulkey scores...he has ten points. Jack just got blocked twice in the same possession. Rojas hits a three to tie it, but Jack finds Chapin for the go-ahead. Davis has his third foul...comes out, then goes back in. Mulkey scores to tie it as we head to the 15-minute mark. Jack hits a three-point play, but Bui hits a shot. It's 31-30. Jack with his first foul, and now Rojas hits a three. 33-31, 13 minutes left. Bui scores again, but Jack hits a three. Maybe he's getting the eye of the tiger. Davis hits a three-point play, and GW leads 37-35. Rojas...whose name is Man Rojas...throws it out of bounds. Hulett scores with 10:22 left, making it 41-36, GW. Syracuse has eight blocks today. Davis scores off a Jack pass. Mulkey responds...then Chapin hits. It's 45-38. Jack hasa 15-7-5 today. Hulett coaxes a foul by Windle on a 3. He hits two, misses the third, and Woods gets it for GW. It's 49-40, 6:30 left. Davis hits a three, as Jack is up to six assists. He then gets a steal, then scores...17-8-6 for Jack, and it's 54-40, 3:45 left. Jack scores again, before 7-1 Darnell Croom hits a three to end the bleeding. Jack hits a three, and it's 59-43. He comes out with 1:42 left, and that'll do that. Albert Cheek hits a trash time three, and Dustin Purcell adds another...the game ends 61-53, but it was not indicative of that second half, in which GW dominated. This is very much like last year's team, get off to a slow start, then dominate in the second half. Jack is a big reason for that, but these guys are finding roles. Davis had 15, Chapin 13 rebounds. 12.12.82: at Yale (4-2)
The Bulldogs are a bit of a mystery. They have loads of talent, but haven't beaten anyone of quality, and barely beat the teams they have. They will give Jack a hell of a run with SF Gabriel Smith, who is averaging 20.5 points and 8.3 rebounds this season. Forward Kevin Manning has 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, and will make for a Colonial-sized headache. (Can that be a thing? Wasn't the average Colonial 5'5?). They don't score enough and don't stop the other team from scoring enough. That said, GW is smoke and mirrors. This should be a 5-7 point Yale victory. Manning scores first, Jack is called for a charge, and Hulett drills a three. Not all in that order. Alphonse Escalante (the hardest name I've had to write so far) gets a breakaway dunk, and it's 4-3 with 16:50 left. Jack hits two freebies. Antonie Verdin gets Marty Chilton a bucket, making it 6-5. Jack goes one-for-two from the line, then hits a three. He has six, and it's 9-6. Manning fouls Chapin, and then Chapin fouls Manning. With 14:29 left, it's 9-7. And Chapin has his second foul. Yale's already in the penalty with six minutes gone. GW has six turnovers. Jack with a dunk...he has eight of their eleven points. He scores again, and it's 13-10. GW has no player on the floor who has scored in this game. Gabriel Smith scores off a steal, and he's getting more involved. Patterson scores his first bucket, and it's 18-15, Yale, with ten minutes left. Timmy Day hits a three, giving Yale a 21-15 lead with nine minutes left. Hulett draws a charge on Smith, and Jack is st...there he is. It's 10-3-0 for him. Chapin hits a putback of a Jack miss. Manning has seven points...Patterson swipes Verdin and hits a dunk. It's 23-21 with six minutes left. Escalante hits a three. Jack answers with a layup. He has twelve, and then hits from the top of the key. With 4:19 left, it's 30-25. Bill Larkin scores. Yale is shooting 63%. Jack finds Hulett, and Woods scores, to get GW back to 32-29. Jack suffers his third foul...ouch. Sandy hits a three, making it 33-32. Hulett scores two free throws, making it 34-33 with a minute left. Yale ties it up. Smith hits two free throws...it ends 36-34. Jack has 14-5-1, but three fouls are the key here. Yale shot 62% from the field, and 67% from three. Jack finds Chapin for the opening basket. Manning scores. Davis gets Escalante his third foul. Jack scores to tie the game. Jack hits again, and GW has a 40-38 lead. Yale retakes the lead, 41-40...Smith suffers his second foul, and Sandy ties it right back up. The foul-fest continues...with four minutes gone by, GW has 3, and Yale has 2. Davis drills a three, making it 44-43. Escalante hits a three, but Woods reties it. Manning answers that. Jack answers that one...he has 20-9-2, and it's 48-48. Jack then coaxes Smith's third foul, and gets a 51-48 lead off the hoop and free throw. Smith then suffers his fourth foul. With 13:26 left, it's 53-48, GW. Escalante hits a three, but Jack responds. He has 27-10-2 right now. Sandy hits two free throws. Jack scores off a turnover, giving GW a 59-51 lead. Then he finds Sandy for a basket. Sandy gets a steal and another layup. He has ten points, and it's 63-51 with eleven minutes left. Manning (17) gets Yale back on the board. Jack gets a steal and a layup. He has 31-10-3 for a 65-53 lead. He scores again, but he is tired. He gets a break, and Yale is coming back. 67-58. Ali gets a hoop, but Escalante (17) scores again. Mulvey hits a three-pointer, but Escalante answers. 74-62, and Jack has to come back. He does with five minutes left. Davis scores, and GW has a 76-64 lead. Verdin hits two free throws. Smith gets a steal, and hits a layup. Sandy responds with a three, off a Jack pass. He has four fouls.... Jack gets a hoop, and the foul. His free throw makes it 82-68. Woods scores, but Sandy responds. Jack fouls out with two minutes left...Manning follows that with a bucket, making it 84-72. Patterson hits two free throws, and Verdin scores. Sandy answers, then gets a steal. He has 15. GW will hold Yale off. Yale had 23 turnovers...12 of those were off GW steals. Week 7: 12.13-19.82
The top seven remained the same. Kansas dropped out of the top ten, as did Baylor. GW has not sniffed the polls yet, but they shouldn't. Lafayette is moving up, heading to 19th after a 7-0 start. Code:
12.16.82: vs Columbia (4-3) The Lions have two admirable losses, to #11 Southern Methodist by two, and at Seton Hall. Columbia. They shoot pretty well, and pass the ball around quite well (19th in assists). But they are horrific rebounders. GW should have a field day on the boards, which is what will likely get them the win here. If Columbia is to win, it will be because they got a major advantage in the backcourt. Anton Silverstein and Joe Spector are returning starters, and Spector has been in the program for a third season. They are not all that experienced...forward Charlie Deal is the only player to have as much experience as the backcourt. Columbia appears to be at a crossroads. They were a program on the rise, and stalled out. They reached the NCAA last year, but they have been up and down over the last four years. It appears they're going to continue in this wavy pattern. Let's hope the up doesn't happen today. Columbia is a small team. Just wanted to say that. Joe Spector scores the game's first hoop, which Jack answers with a dunk. Columbia gets out to a quick 7-2 lead. Spector hits a three, and GW calls a timeout with 17:40 left. Chapin scores for GW, and Silverstein has two quick fouls. Jack draws a foul on Leverett, and gets the points, but Ross West hits a three, making it 13-6 after four minutes. Davis is shooting horribly to start...Jack hits Woods for a bucket, and he is fouled. The three-point play makes it 13-10. Jack follows with a three-point play of his own. Tie ballgame. Columbia has five turnovers. Jack scores, giving GW a 15-13 lead...Spector follows that with a three. Chapin scores and gets the foul. He ties it at 18-18. Columbia answers again with five points, making it 23-18. Porter Ali scores a triple, and James Edwards counters that. John Sandy counters that one. 26-24, 8:35 left. Jack's line is 9-4-1, as he comes out. Sandy hits two free throws to tie it, and again, Columbia responds with a three. Davis hits, but Deal responds. Davis hits again. 31-30, Columbia. Davis hits off a Sandy pass, but Columbia still holds a 33-32 lead. Jack comes back and misses his first bucket...Webb, Silverstein and Leverett all have two fouls. Spector has 14 points, and Jack ties it...then Woods takes the lead off a Jack pass. Chapin then fouls...he has two. GW has a 40-38 lead when Jack finds Hulett. With 2:42 left, GW is up, 40-39. Silverstein takes the lead, before Jack retakes it. He has 13-6-3...Leverett scores. Silverstein gets his third foul, and Jack hits both free throws. Columbia has 12 fouls. It's 45-43 with just under a minute left. Jack blocks a shot, then finds Hulett. It's GW 48, Columbia 43 at the break. Jack finishes with a 15-6-4 line. Spector has fourteen for Columbia. GW had one turnover, which is why they lead despite the fact that the Lions shot 55% in the half. Jack assists Davis on the first possession of the second half. Then he does it again. It's 52-43. Spector has his second turnover of the second half, and Jack finds Hulett. Then he finds Woods. Four possessions, four Jack assists. Jack hits a three, making it 59-48. Silverstein responds, and then Spector gets a turnover and layup. Jack responds. He has 20-7-8...make that 22-7-8. 63-51, 16:48 left. Jack assists Chapin, then gets a rebound. Jack's up to 22-9-9, and with 15 left, it's 65-55. This is a ten-point game, but feels like thirty. Until now...James Edwards hits a three. Woods follows with a bucket, then Jack hits two free throws. Selman responds for Columbia, and Leverett picks up his third foul. It's 69-60 with 11:07 left. Jack gets his tenth assist. Davis then adds a bucket...73-60, 10:29 left. Leverett (8) hits a three. GW is getting great possessions, but no points. Several possessions with several offensive rebounds. Jack just drew a charge. Patterson scores...as Jack sits. Spector hits a three, and it's 75-66 with 7:00 left. Chris Davis is in?!?!? What?! Mulvey scores, and it's back to 11, 77-66. Chris Davis SCORES! His first points come on a three! Then he leaves, and Jack, who has a triple-double (24-10-10) comes back. He's fouled by James Edwards, and hits both free throws. Spector finds Charlie Deal, but Woods responds. Jack finds Hulett, who has eight points, but four fouls. Jack finds Davis (18) for a three. It's up to 89-72, and the rout is well on. Jack hits both free throws after a foul, and comes out. 91-72, and the subs are in. The final is 93-74. GW only had six turnovers all game. Jack had one of his finest lines, 28-11-12. He made all 13 of his free thorws. He got three steals and a block. Columbia had 17 turnovers and were out-assisted, 21-19, and outrebounded, 39-29. All in all, it was a standout performance for this GW team...their best of the year. Code:

Week 8: 12.20-26.82
Maryland fell after losing to Penn. Everything else stayed mostly at the status quo, though SMU fell out of the poll after being ranked 12th. Code:
12.20.82: vs Georgetown (3-5) The Hoyas had their first-ever postseason visit last year. To be fair, the field expanded from 64 to 96 teams, total, and the Hoyas were in the first-ever Big East season. Their 18-14 season wouldn't have gotten them a sniff of tournament play any other year. But, still, they did. So, good on them. Julius Hamilton and Jimmy McNeal are the only two players who have logged much time in the system. McNeal is a three-year starter, Hamilton a two. They start a freshman backcourt, led by leading scorer Jimmy Hermann (11.9 ppg). But this is a team that has a hard time scoring, a harder time rebounding, and an even harder time keeping opponents off the boards...especially on their offensive end. This spells disaster for the Hoyas. Davis pays tribute to Leroy with a foul on the game's first physical action. Then he picks up a second. Sandy is in, and Jack slides to the point. Jack is fouled on a dunk attempt, and sink's the game's first two points. Hulett follows with a dunk off a turnover. Hermann scores the first points for the Hoyas, but Jack sinks a three. Then another bucket. He has seven points, and Georgetown calls timeout. GT is going to through bodies at Jack all day. Jack hits with 13:02 left, giving GW an 11-2 lead. GT is shooting 1-for-10 so far...1-for-11. Jack scores again. He has 11-1-0 so far, and it's 13-2. Jack then finds Hector Patterson, making it 15-2. He gets a break with ten minutes left. Sandy scores..then Porter Ali hits a three. Julius Hamilton finally scores for GT, and it's 22-4, with eight minutes left. Derek Dressler hits a three, as Georgetown apparently figured out the game started. Jack hits a bucket...he has 13, and with 5:39 left, it's 24-7. Georgetown has put up no resistence, anywhere. Oh, now they're in a press. Jack gets fouled, sinks both...28-9 with four minutes to go. I think Hulett has either two or three fouls. Doesn't matter, he comes out. Chapin scores, and it's 30-9. GW holds a 20-12 edge in rebounds, and GT has six turnovers. Jack gets an and-one, making it 35-11 with 1:14 left. He has 18 points and 3 rebounds. It's 37-11 at the half...Jack has an 18-4-2 line. Georgetown shot 19% from the field, 9% from 3, was outrebounded 22-12, and had seven turnovers to GW's three. That's a whoopin. Hulett fouls to open the second half. Jack gets an and-one, and now has 21. Davis picks up his third foul, which means Hulett has to have his fourth, since he got pulled. Jack scores again. He's shooting well. Hermann spotted someone open in the third row. Jack hits a three...he has 26. It's 47-15 with 16:41 left. Georgetown calls time...why? How will that help? They respond with a shot clock violation. GW, not wanting to be left out, has one of their own. GT hits on two straight possessions, making it 47-20. Then Hamilton hits another shot, prompting GW to call time. Jack finds Sandy for a hoop out of the meeting. He has a 26-5-3 line. With 11:54 left, it's 49-25. Jack gets and and-one, his third of the game. He has 29-6-3, and it's 52-27. Hermann scores...Jack then finds Chapin for a score. It's 54-32 with nine minutes left. Jack hits two more free throws, and Moriarty hits a three after. With nine minutes left, it's 57-35. The rest of this will play out quickly. Jack is at 31-7-4. Jack gets yet another and-one. He has 36, and it's 63-37. Jack now has 38, and he has outscored Georgetown by himself. He can also get his first 40-point game with another bucket. Doubtful he'll get it, though...Jack gets a double-double. Yup. Michael King turns it over, and Jack leaves the game. While he was in, he outscored Georgetown by himself. Third time that has hpapened in his career. Nathan Long scores for Georgetown, meaning it won't sustain. Georgetown has played a better second half, but really, how could they not? The only way they could play worse is if the team suffered an epidemic and died. The final is 70-42. Jack shot 12-14 from the field, 12-12 from the line. He was 2-3 from 3, had four blocks and a steal. And just one turnover. Code:

It's probably a combination of both. I think they've definitely found a formula, and guys have found their roles. But having teams to do that with has helped, for sure.

Week 9: 12.27.82-1.2.83
Missouri fell to 3-7 MIssissippi, then to Oregon State. They dropped from #1 to #10. Washington takes the top spot, while BYU moves up to #2, leapfrogging Rice and Colorado State. You get the feeling that, if this was the top four, college basketball ratings would drop precipitously. GW picked up a few votes, but they aren't ranked yet. Code:
12.27.82: vs. #20 Lafayette (11-1) The Leopards' rank is inflated. They own only one win over a team with a winning record, that being a 68-60 win over St. Francis (NY). They have a solid defense, which is their calling card. They've given up 63.2 points per game, 33rd in the nation. They are also ninth in the nation in giving up rebounds, yielding just 30.2 a game. They are not particularly great at offense, but with a defense like that, it isn't necessary. They are led by three-year starter Brian Jones, who has broken out this year with 21.0 ppg. Frenchman guard Florentin Picavet averages 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, while forward Cam Null puts up 15.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. There is star power, but this roster is all top-heavy. Granted, GW is mostly Jack, but enough pieces fit around him. It seems like these three are what the Leopards have, and if a couple of them aren't clicking, well... Picavet travels on his first possession, but it's cool. Davis throws it out of bounds. Null scores to open things, and Jack finds Hulett to tie it. Hulett drills a three off a Jack pass, and he has five quick points. Jack hits his first shot at 16:38, and then commits his first foul at 16:27. But GW hits four of their first five shots, and have an 11-7 lead after the first four. Davis misses two free throws, then sinks a jumpe rfrom the line. Explain that. GW holds an 8-2 advantage on the boards early. Hulett gets his seventh point on a breakaway layup. It's 15-9 with 13:07 left, before uber 80s pompous ass Brady Cory gets a steal and a hoop. Seriously, he should have been the villain in Teen Wolf. WIth 11:36, it's 22-16. Jack has a 2-3-4 line, and Hulett has 10 points. Cory gets another steal and an assist, and Davis then coaxes a foul on him to get him out of the game. Jack sinks a bucket, and with 10:20 left, it's 24-19. Davis gets fouled shooting a three, and hits two of the three freebies. It's 26-19 with nine left. Jack is called for a charge, and has to come out with a 26-22 score and eight minutes left. Robert Mulvey comes in and immediately does Robert Mulvey things, which you know are no good. Clark Lewis hits a shot...Clark Lewis? Really, parents of Lewis, Clark? Seriously? Jack returns despite two fouls, and gets some points. It's up to 30-26. Jack assists Davis, when then fouls Jones. Jones then gets a steal and hits a 3. It's 34-31 with 5:22 left. Jack has a 7-4-5 line, but they could use his scoring. As I say that, Jack finds Davis for a basket. Chapin suffers his second foul, and the free throw makes it 36-32. GW is making only 50% of their foul shots, by the way. Jack hits a bucket, and it's 40-34. Picavet answers, but Jack finds Chapin. Picavet answers that. Jack answers that with his own bucket. He has 11-5-7, and it's 44-40, GW. Jack draws a foul on Camerlo Kelly, hits both free throws, and comes out. Timmy Foltz hits a three to get it to 46-43, but Patterson hits two free throws. Jack returns, and Jones fouls Sandy. Clark Lewis hits a bucket at the buzzer, and it's 49-45, GW, at the break. GW shot great...68%. But they got lazy on the rebounds (15-11 after a 10-3 advantage) and turnovers (9 Laf, 7 GW). Jack has a 13-5-7 line, with two fouls. Null has 16 quiet points for Lafayette. Null opens with a turnover, and Davis gets a breakaway layup. Then he hits a three. He has 17, and it's 54-45. Jack hits a jumper. Chapin is collecting boards. Hulett hits a three. GW is shooting 72%. Jack finds Davis for a bucket. This is remarkable. Williams scores to stop the bleeding for Lafayette. But Jack hits a three, and the lead is 64-47. This team is a monster second half squad. Jack is up to an 18-6-8 line. Jones hits a three, getting it to 64-50. You have a feeling that the Leopards have a run in them, especially since this is in their gym. Then Davis hits a three, and that feeling is fleeing. Jackass Brady Cory misses a three. Jack drains one. He has 21-8-8 now. Cory hits, but it's 70-52. Jack hits again. Then gets a steal, and a layup. Then a rebound. Then another basket. This is remarkable. He now has 27-10-8, and the lead is 76-52 with 7:45 left. Jack hits again. Honestly, he's ridiculous. He draws a charge on Picavet and comes out. WIth 6:30 left, it's 78-58, and Lafayette appears to be in shock. Orlando Maley and Robert Mulvey are in the post. I feel like, when they are together, there's a tiny rip in the space-time continuum. Honestly, the final few minutes are nothing but bricks and turnovers. So I'm going to spare you from that. GW marched into an overrated team's gym and showed the world they are overrated. The final, 85-63, felt like it was much bigger. GW fine-tuned everything that was a problem in the first half. Having Jack go nuts, and Davis and Hulett drilling shots, helps things quite a bit, too. 12.30.82: vs Seton Hall (8-4) The Pirates are a team of promise, built off the last two NIT appearances. They have two returning starters from a year ago, Seven-foot-one C John Horton, and PG Frank Barns. Barns is averaging 15.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Forward Troy Almazan is averaging a team-high 16.6 points, along with six rebounds, a game. He is one of the feelgood stories of this year, being a deep reserve throughout his career under suddenly being fantastic this year. He never averaged more than 1.5 points a game leading into this season. Now, while he's still an O/Y, he's the offensive stalwart of a team succeeding in transition. The Pirates are another team who are not good at defense, and a horrible rebounding team. GW should be able to see them off reasonably well. Hulett opens the scoring, and then Davis gets a three off a Jack pass. After four minutes, it's 5-3. Hulett hits a three, off a Jack assist. His line is 0-1-2 right now, but it's 8-3, so that's fine. Almazan hits a three, and he has all five points. Jack answers that with a monster dunk that caused two fans to have a religious awakening. He got a foul shortly after because he brought too much funk. Barns, meanwhile, ties it up for Seton Hall with 12:26 left. Roddy Liang gives Seton Hall a 15-12 lead on a three, and GW is performing pretty poorly at the moment. Jack gets a three to Sandy, and it's tied again. With 8:57 left, it's 18-17, GW. Jack has a 4-2-3 line. This game is honestly boring. Jack hits, making it 22-19. Edmond McCutcheon ties it for SH, but Jack answers. He's up to 10 points, and Seton Hall is being to shake a bit. Davis gets hurt and has to come out. Will have to monitor that. Jack scores four more points...it's 30-23 with five minutes left. Sandy scores, and SH finally calls time. Jack finds Hector for three, and the rout seems like it's on. Porter Ali has four points after a tip, and it's 44-28 at the half. SH is shooting 38%, GW 53%. For December, Jack shot 78 for 124 (62.9%). He shot 66-for-68 from the line. Honestly, this was a remarkable month out of him.

Two small updates: - Dwight Davis' injury is merely day-to-day. He'll be fine. - This was not noticed before, but coach Arlie Jennings bolted GW after five seasons to go to Bucknell. Not good foresight on his part...four years of Jack would have bolstered his profile an unbelivable level. In the polls, BYU took the top spot back from Washington, despite Washington not losing. Missouri continues to slide, getting crushed at #6 Princeton, 104-81. They fell to #16. George Washington, meanwhile, drew up more votes. Actually thought they would slide into the rankings, but no...they are 29th. Code:
1.4.83: at Drexel (6-7) The Dragons own a surprising win over Duke, but they haven't been all that good since. Offensively, they are inept. In rebounding terms, they are inept. Seems to be a lot of that going around. They do have all five starters returning, but from a team that went 12-20 a year ago. This group of players has not done anything in their tenure...the program reached the NCAA four seasons ago, but this group has been very disappointing. G Woody Dimarco (12.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 5.1 apt) and C Brady Green (13.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg). The rest of the roster...eh. Starting guard, Gavin Donofrio, is slightly injured, though he will play in this game. Hulett opens the scoring. Green hits two free throws for Drexel, and Jack finds Hulett. Woods gets a breakaway, but Green hits two more free throws. He is then called for an offensive foul, but follows that up with a dunk. With 16:12 left, it's 58-46. Jack HITS ANOTHER THREE HOLY DEAR GOD, he has 39. Drexel is keeping pace, though...it's 61-49 with 14:10 left. Jack seems to be going a bit cold, but they're feeding him. Drexel is inching back, and Jack comes out for a breather. Jack comes back and scores. He has 41, a new career high. Ridiculous. John Sandy scores two free throws, making it 65-53. Jack drills two free throws. That ties a school record for points in a game, with 43. Drexel keeps pace, though...Jack follows his own miss with a dunk, and he has 45. That's a new school record. Sandy follows a miss with a dunk, and it's back to 71-55. Burt Luu scores...71-57, seven minutes left. Jack gets called for an illegal screen, then makes up for that with two steals, a dunk, and then another score. He's up to 49-12-3. Nobody would be upset for a lack of assists this game. Jack now has fifty-one points. It's 77-61, 5:14 left. I have never seen this in a game before. Jack heads to the line, and hits both free throws. He comes out, GW up 79-63, with 3:41 left. I haven't watched much of anything Drexel has done, because of this performance. He comes back with an 81-65 lead and 2:52 left. Drexel keeps inching back...it's 81-69, and Jack scores again, with :42 left. Brady Green hits a three, and it's 83-72. Jack gets a steal, runs out the clock, and that's it. Jack Dawkins: 55 points. That ties the single-game record, held by Tobias Gonzalez of Centenary, back on December 20, 1958. Jerry Bugg of Northwestern scored 52 on January 30 of last year. There have been eight 50-point performances since the league resurrected. He shot 19-31, and 10-10 from the line. 1.8.83: at Bucknell (5-9) Ah, well, well...the kids Arlie Jennings brought into GW pay a visit to Arlie Jennings. Perhaps he thought he caught lightning in a bottle, and that it would not strike twice. And yet, here is GW, 11-2 marching in, destroying teams with the best player ever seen in the college ranks that plays in the nation's capital. And there's Jennings, with a losing team in a small, pretty, podunk town in central Pennsylvania. Ah, talk about career choices, and projecting your trajectory. This year's team is short-staffed, as five players are redshirting. Three starters from last year's 21-12 team remain, though the soul of their recent history, which include back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, is gone. John Claudell (12.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and Al (Ice) Cooper return in the post, while Neil Wacker (17.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.6 apg) is the lead guard. Bucknell has trouble scoring, and difficulty keeping teams off the glass. They also foul an awful lot...but they draw an awful lot of fouls. They are remarkably inefficient in scoring, ranking 227th in points per shot. This has "worst game ever" written all over it. Bucknell is tiny, going 6'9, 6'8, 6'3, 6'1, 6'1. GW has three turnovers, and nobody has scored in the first two minutes. Hulett has a three off a Jack pass. Caudell dunks it for Bucknell's first bucket. Hulett hits again...with 15:15 left, Hulett has seven, and it's 7-5. Jack has taken a backseat to his teammates early on, with thirteen minutes left, he has an 0-3-2 line. He draws a foul and hits one of two...a rare free throw miss for him. With 12 minutes left, it's 13-8. Make that 13-10. GW is going to start to pull away right now. Jack hits, and Bucknell starts fouling...17-10 with 9:43 left. GW is controlling the boards, and Bucknell is not shooting. Of course, Woods, bails them out with a foul. Jack goes to the bench, and is summoned right back. It's 17-15, and Jack follows a Hulett miss with a dunk...then gets two free throws. He has a 7-6-2 line, and it's 21-15 with 7:40 left. Woods has a major fouling issue. He fouls again and has to come out. Bucknell plays funky, which is how they get their fouls. Jack is now called for his first, with 6:05 left. They're shooting 21% from the field, but it's 27-19, because of the free throws. Jack's line is up to 9-8-3, as GW has run up a 33-21 line with four minutes left. Jack has a double-double in the first half, 11-10-4, as the lead is 15. Hulett has 12 points...41-26 with 1:40 left. Still, GW has 13 fouls. This is no good. It's a 41-28 lead for GW at the break. Jack has an 11-12-4 line...GW has 14 first-half fouls. But they have a 33-20 edge in rebounds, and the Bison are shooting 23% from the floor. They're about to run into a second half monster. Claudell hits the first bucket, and Woods follows a Jack miss with a dunk. Caudell hits again. He's playing great...nine (now twelve points) eight rebounds. Davis answers with a three. Jack hits a shot, and it's back to 48-35 with 16:28 left. Jack gets Hulett for a basket, and Bucknell takes time. Hulett is hitting a good amount this game, as is Davis. Hulett has 16, Jack 15, an Davis 10. It's 54-36 with 12 minutes to go. Caudell has 13 for Bucknell. The post guys for GW have no discipline. Mulvey is now in...he's had to have played maybe four minutes this game, and he has three fouls. Oy. Davis gets an and-one, while Larry Crippen-My-Style responds for Bucknell...Jack is up to 17-14-7 for GW after he finds Hulett. And now, a three-point play for Jack. He glares at Jennings afterwards...these guys should run up the score. The freshmen who came to play for him, now look from afar and know he left the best situation he could have. 70-44. Jack has 25-16-7, and he's quietly boiling. Hulett now has 20, maybe a career high for him. The two guys from his last class, the class that got him where he is, that made him a national darling...now putting him in his place. With 5:39 left, it's 75-53. Jack hits two more free throws. Jack finds CHRIS DAVIS for the hoop, which is his last action for the game. He leaves, and Hulett hits again. He has 22. Davis has 12 and six boards. John Sandy, Porter Ali and company continue to reign down...86-59, and they aren't letting up. The final is 90-62, a full-on destruction of a man they made. Wonder if Bucknell feels they made the right move, now. Jack's line: 27 points, 16 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 blocks. He didn't take a three all game, one game after hitting seven. Washington is undefeated, hung 109 on 11-4 Santa Clara, 105 on #3 BYU...and they were skipped atop the polls by Rice. Rice moved to #1 by beating three teams last week, ranked 5-10, 1-15, and 3-15. Explain that voters. BYU, who didn't lose, moved to #3. In other words, the voters can't make up their bloody minds who they want atop the list. 1.14.83: vs St. Francis (PA) (5-10) The Red Flash has had just that in its history...one season, one quick flash of quality. They went 20-11, and reached the second round of the NIT, back in 1972-73. They have been a .500 nearly every year, before or since. This season is, so far, their worst since they went 7-22 in 1977-78. They have a couple one-point losses, but honestly, they are not good. They own no quality wins. They are kinda good at rebounding, but bad at keeping teams off the offensive boards. That does not serve them well against GW. They did return four starters from a year ago, and are experienced. Two players have logged 100+ games in the program, another two have played in 73. They are led by forward Ben Wright (14.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and G Lyle Lechner (11.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.8 apg). They go seven deep, in terms of production, but they probably don't have the resources to curb Jack. Davis and Woods may have good games, too. Jack draws a foul on the game's first possession. He then assists Hulett for a score. Jack then assists Chapin, making it 5-4 after a minute. Hulett is charged with a technical after he commits a foul. Smooth move. He's sitting, and Patterson is in. He hits immediately. We're two minutes in, and nine fouls have been called between the two teams. Yeesh. With 17:30, it's 12-10, GW. Jack has yet to score through the game's first five minutes. But he has three assists, and it's 14-12. As he sits, you know he's going to get going when he comes back...which he does at 13:31. Jack sinks a three immediately after he returns. He goes cold again, though, along with everyone else. They're shooting 39% as a team. Chris Davis is in...that's never good when it's not the last two minutes of a game. St. Francis takes a 20-17 lead with 8:24 left. Davis tosses it away...yeesh. Porter Ali gets it going again with a three. Hulett then takes the lead...and Jack exits for a breather. St. Francis leads, 26-23...Jack has a 3-4-4 line at the moment. Nobody is standing out for either team at the moment. With four minutes left, it's 27-26, GW. 21 fouls, 17 turnovers...this is pathetic, all around. Jack scores, then follows that with a monster dunk. Sandy decides they don't need the momentum, and tosses the next possession out of bounds. Jack then hits two free throws, but Lyle Lechner hits a three to get it back to within a bucket. Ben Wright scores at the end of the first half, tying the score at 33. That was a dreadful half, and fans are right to demand a refund. Jack has a 9-5-4 line, and it's obvious, they'll need his regular second half heroics if they're going to pull this out. Jack gets an assist, then a steal and a dunk. Then he draws a foul out of Ward, and it's 39-35, GW. Jack hits again, and he has a 15-7-5 line. Jack keeps trying to get Davis going, but he doesn't want to get going. Jack rebounds a Patterson miss, gets the fouul and the score...he's suddenly up to 21 points, and it's 47-35, GW. Sandy decides the momentum is good this time, and hits a three to make it 50-35 with 15 minutes left. Jack hits another bucket, before Timmy Gonzales scores for St. Francis. It's 19-4 in favor of GW so far this half. Jack throws one down on a rebound; he has a 25-9-5 line, and it's 54-39. Mulvey drills a three, building the lead to 59-43. Chris Davis is back in, because Hulett has eight fouls. Jack gets a break, and we'll see if the Red Flash can get back into this game. 6:41 left. Jack comes back, likely only for a minute or two. Wright gets it to 59-45, as GW has gone cold. Gonzales gets a steal and a layup, but Davis follows. Jack then finds Sandy for a hoop. His line is 25-11-6...then he follows a miss with a bucket, but St. Francis is staying with it. It's 65-53 with two minutes left. Gonzales gets it down to ten...Patterson got fouled on a three, but makes only one. Lechner hits a three, but St. Francis managed things horribly. Jack finally is fouled with :34 left, hits both, and the game is thankfully over. That was a lump of a game by GW. They'll have to play better if they want to start wowing voters. Code:

Washington fell a spot despite being undefeated (ed note: I forgot to print before I simmed; they lost). Despite voters being picky about who's where in the top ten, the fact is, the top ten is generally set. Colorado State, who started the year 11-0, is now 15-3, and has dropped down to #17. George Washington moved up one spot, to #23. That's fine...they didn't do anything worthy of moving up, so one spot is a bonus. Code:
1.21.83: vs. Texas Pan-American (7-10) That timeless rivalry, restored. George Washington versus Texas Pan-American. The world slows down, as the Colonials and Broncos tussle. Sometimes, I wish Jack got himself into a proper conference. The Broncos do play very good defense, 30th in the nation. But they are terrible at offense. 214th in the nation, at 60 points a game. 195th in shooting. Awful at rebounding (though good at keeping opponents off them. They are also extremely untalented, and experienced. Four players have played 100+ games...two, guard Thomas Richard and forward William Depriest, have started all 105 games they have played. That hasn't led to much...a 28-60 record the past three years. They did reach the NIT a year ago, at 16-14. So that's a major improvement. Chapin gets an and-one on GW's first possession. He hits the free throw. Jack then finds Davis, making it 5-0. Richard hits a three for TxPA. Jack gets a steal and finds Hulett, then gets another steal. Hulett, AGAIN, gets charged with a technical after fouling. Does he EVER learn?! Jack gets his first bucket, making it 9-7 with 14:09 left. He also commits his first foul, and illegal screen. He does that more than any other foul. Jack hits again...TxPA is begging to be run out of this game. Jack hits a three. It's 16-9. Patterson comes in and hits...I really like him over Hulett in the future. Perhaps that's because Hulett's a bloody moron who can't stop arguing. Woods gets a steal and a layup, and it's 21-10 with 8:30 left. Davis drills a three...he has been shooting poor lately. The Apocalypse Twins are in...Maley and Mulvey. I said before, if they're in together, there is another little rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Meanwhile, it's 26-14, and this game has gotten boring. Jack is still sitting, with 5:30 left. Isdiro Huff sounds like a great name. Hulett comes in, commits a charge, and exits. He has three fouls. Jack has gone a little cold..he's 7-1-2 so far in this game. GW is getting out-rebounded, and now Sandy gets charged with a technical after hitting a three for taunting. You don't hit enough to taunt! You aren't good enough to do that! Jack finds Davis for a hoop, and the lead is 34-20. These guys are buying their own hype. Jack seems to be the only one. And he didn't have a great half...he finishes with 10-2-3, two fouls, and it's 37-21 at the half. If I'm in the locker room, I'm informing these guys that they're not making any endorsement deals, that they didn't win any trophies last year, and they're currently not respecting Texas Pan-American. And they aren't playing in front of a large crowd. They're disrespecting their school, and themselves, and it'll come back on them. Play with some damn honor, for crying out loud. They aren't good enough to think they're good enough to pull that garbage. Hulett, three fouls and no brains, misses the first shot of the second half. Davis goes 1-2 at the line...why is he such an awful free throw shooter? Oh, hey Richie Hulett! Let's not pull up for a jumper...no, let's go right ahead and plow into the guy. Fourth foul? Sit down, jackass. Jack hits a bucket, but the Broncos are trying to shoot their way back in. Jack (14-2-3) isn't allowing it. It's 44-26 with 16:14 left. Sandy commits his third foul. He's had his head up his rump lately, too. Davis can't hit from outside, and he can't dunk it. Jack suffers his third foul, and the lead is down to 44-31. Hector gets two steals, and a dunk out of one of them. Jack scores, and the lead is back to 49-33, with 11:54 left. This is very uninspiring basketball lately...it's like the team is letting Jack bail them out every time. He's good enough for it, but if he gets hurt, or into foul trouble, these guys are screwed. Rob Mulvey comes in and fouls immediately. That's one way to get into the scorebook, I guess. Jack is being kept off the boards considerably...he only has three, which is a low for him. As a team, they're being outrebounded 29-26. They're up 55-38 though, with 6:40 left. Jack is having an awful game, by his standards. 16-4-5. He scores and glares at me, though...ice cold. Jack gets stripped, but comes back and takes the charge. Good form. With a 60-40 lead, Jack gets pulled. Everyone gets pulled. There are two minutes left, no need for anyone to get hurt. John Sandy managed to foul out of the game. Chris Davis could have scored, but he missed the front end of a one-plus. Isdiro Huff finally hit a three! And Davis ends the game by traveling. Rice stayed atop the poll; North Carolina continued their renaissance, moving up to #2. Kansas moved up to #3, while BYU and Washington fell after losses. George Washington moved up one more spot, to #22. It's rather amazing this team is in this position, given their talent level. It's a testament to Jack's abilities in making everyone better. I think that's been the biggest takeaway from this so far. And knowing that he'll likely never have a truly good player, like a Chuck Crane, for his final two seasons...this has already been worth it. Code:
1.26.82: at Long Island (6-13) The Blackbirds are a mess. They are 6-13, and will suit up only nine players for this game. Two role guys, guard Pete Moton and forward Jessie Swan, are out with injuries. That dreadfully hurts their rotation. Their starting five is decent. They brought back only one starter from last year's 16-14 team (that got ripped, 84-42, by GW). The transition has been difficult. G Basile Decroy, the veteran of this team (105 games), is the leading scorer at 12.2 points per game. PG Willis Zimmer is the best player on the team, is averaging 10.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. And redshirt freshman Tyson Navarro is putting up 10.9 points, and 5.6 rebounds. The issue with this team is the lack of help after those three. They need all three to step up, because the supporting cast is pretty subpar. They are an okay rebounding team, but nearly everything else, they do pretty poorly. Jack finds Woods for a basket on the opening possession. Decroy hits for LI. They have Barry Rugman, who would go on to have a successful carpet cleaning business in the 90s. Jack gets his first points on free throws. Jack then gets an and-one, but misses the free throw, inexplicably. Hulett may try to keep his technical streak going. Jack has six early points. Zimmeran has five, and it's 11-9 with 15:00 left. Hulett hits, and he has five points. Woods has four points; it's 15-10 with 12:11 to go. Jack's line, with ten minutes to go, is 6-1-3. He's shooting poorly, as are all of the GW players. Jack gets an assist on Hulett, who may be the only one hitting some shots. Jack has missed three free throws in this game. That is absurd for him. The lead stretches out to 24-13, and Jack has an 11-4-4 line. Davis hits off a Hulett assist...he has a 7-0-2 line. Jack finally makes two free throws after being fouled by Timmy McBroom, then gets a three-point play. He is up to 16 points, and it's 32-13. Jack hits another with 3:24 left, and comes out with the team up, 34-15. The Apocalypse Twins are in, neither doing anything. The half comes, at 37-19. Jack has an 18-4-4 line. Jack finds Sandy for a hoop, then Sandy gets a dunk, and begins taunting. Ugh. I wish I were coaching the team. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass...he has 20-5-6, Hulett has ten, and it's back to 50-33, after Jack follows his own miss. Rugman throws it down! That could be his slogan. Jack gets an assist. It's back to 54-42, and Sandy drills a three with 7:40 left, and Jack takes a break. Hulett hits a three, and it's back out to 60-42. Hulett drills another three...I wish he were this consistent. GW is on a 16-2 run, and Jack comes back with five left, and drills a three. And then he leaves. Sandy gets himself up to ten points. Maley got himself a couple of points and an assist! And now Chris Davis is in! Pretty sure, if this group, with Mulvey, Maley and Davis in, they'd be the worst five in collegiate basketball. The final is 87-55. GW took care of the ball, and passed it beautifully. They were outrebounded...only by one, but yeah, they were outrebounded. And LI shot better in the second half. Hmmm. Code:
1.29.83: vs American (8-9) Oh, GW has payback on their mind. The Eagles blasted GW last year, 82-67. It would be their last blowout loss. The two teams went on totally divergent paths after this game...whereas GW went on to gel and destroy everyone in the path, headed to the Elite Eight, American sputtered, eventually going 17-16, and reaching fodder status in the NIT. This club continues that sputtering heritage that has become an unfortunate hallmark. The Eagles have a plethora of experience, with two guys who have played in 110+ games, and five others who have played in 49+. Wade Paulsen is the stalwart of the program, having started 112 games in his storied career. This year, he is averaging 22.7 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. C Trevor McHugh puts up 10.1 points, and 7.6 rebounds a game. They are a team that can play a bit of defense, and gets rebounds, but has a hard time keeping offensive rebounding teams from doing that. They also commit a lot of turnovers. If GW can focus, and this is a game where one would think they wouldn't have an issue doing so, this should be richly deserved revenge for the Colonials. Paulsen blocks Jack to start the game...then hits two free throws. Ralph Ham scores off a steal, and it's 4-0. Ham then hits a three, and GW calls time. Hulett comes out of that with a three. GW is building a run back into this game It's 31-28 with nine inutes left. Davis hits a three, getting it to 35-33 with 5:40. Woods ties it with five minutes left, and Jack comes back in. American gets the lead back to seven, as GW has gone cold again. GW has seven ridiculous turnovers. Jack hits, and with one minute left, it's at 43-37. Paulsen turns Sandy over...the half ends, 43-37, in favor of American. Jack has a 9-3-4 line, while Paulsen has 19 for American. Yeesh. Woods hits a shot out of a turnover to start the second half. Jack gets a foul by Paulsen, and hits both free throws. It's Wade's first...Jack draws a charge on Ham, then hits another shot. He does this, as you well know. It's 43-43, and Ham picks up his third foul. Paulsen got his second, as well. Jack matches Paulsen's three, and it's tied at 45, with 16:44 left. Hulett gives GW their first lead, and Jack forces a five-second call on Paulsen. Hulett scores again, and Jack gets his fifth assist. Davis is fouled on a three-point attempt, and converts all three. It's 54-48...Jack has 18-4-5, Davis has 16, and GW is running off with this. Hulett hits a three, and Jack gets another assist. Paulsen hits a three, making it 60-51. Jack gets a steal off Paulsen, who, despite his points, is not having a good half. Woods gets hurt, no word on if he'll return. American gets it back to 60-57, and Ali finally hits for GW. Ten minutes left. Jack scores off a Sandy bucket, but Gerald Taveras responds. Hulett commits a foul, his first. He's gotten better recently. Mulvey gets fouled by McHugh, and hits both free throws. Jack is out, and American is threatening. It's 68-66, 7:00. They need Jack, and Hulett and Davis right now. They get Sandy, who hits. Huett then hits..he has 17. Jack gets a huge bock of Michael Overman's drive. Jack forces Paulsen into five seconds. It's 75-68 with 3:29 left. Now, Patterson gets a steal, and a layup. Back out to nine. American responds with four points, and it's 77-72. Woods hits two free throws. Jack hits for his first points in a few minutes, and Ham responds with a three. Jack hits two free throws...it's 83-75 with 1:40 left. Jack gets fouled, and hits two more. He's up to 27, and Paulsen responds with a three. He's got 30. Jack finds Sandy...Paulsen misses, and that'll do things here. 87-78 is the final, and while it was more difficult than originally thought, perhaps...it is a well-earned win. It has been discovered that Dwight Davis got hurt, and will miss the next six weeks. That puts him out until the NCAA Tournament. It will be interesting to see how they handle this. He is their second-leading scorer. Richie Hulett is not ready to become that guy...not that Davis was all that great. John Sandy will probably slide into the SF spot, and Jack to the point, to get around this. Maybe Hector will become the new lead guard. Either way, they are going to be severely bothered by this. Looking specifically at Jack, here are his rankings... He is seventh in school history in points scored, at 1418. He is 17th in rebounds (555), fifth in assists (344), 15th in steals (103), and is the all-time leader in blocks (158) In terms of this year, on the national landscape... Points: 29.7 (1st; ahead by 6.0 ppg...was up to 31.0, but that fell off) Rebounds: 10.4 (t13th; one of five players averaging a double-double) Assists: 6.1 (t8th) Steals: 2.1 (t26th) Blocks: 3.2 (14th) He also ranks 1st in field goal percentage (59.6%), and free throw perentage (94.5%). His 50% three point shooting is t-11th. His 1.74 points-per-shot is second-best in the nation, but way ahead of anyone who has his kind of volume. He has 535 points in 604 minutes, which is amazing. And only 30 turnovers. He has 110 assists, 30 turnovers...hell, he only has 39 fouls committed. 2.2.83: vs Navy (3-16) The Midshipmen are in the midst of their worst season since 1963, when they went 1-28. Amazingly, they are 1-0 vs the top 50 in RPI, having upset La Salle, 64-63. They are a rubbish team, ranking in the 200s in scoring and rebounding, and in the high 100s in most defensive categories. The bigs for GW should rip through this game. They are experienced, with four starters having returned from a year ago, and nearly their entire bench. They just aren't...good, especially in the post. They're lead by G Marcos Rosenblatt (14.9 ppg, 3.1 rebounds) and guard Jeremiah Villalpando (11.4 ppgs, 2.8 rpg, 3.4 apg). Navy is big, starting 6'10, 6'9, 6'7 on the front line...and they still don't rebound. Jack scores GW's first points, which Rosenblatt responds. Jack commits an early foul. Nine fouls in the first four minutes for each team...Navy holds a 9-6 lead after four minutes. Woods scores, making it 9-8. GW has yet to miss from the field. Jack has a 4-1-0 line, before he drills a three. Hulett getting into foul trouble brings Michael King into the fray. Jack hits another three, has 10 points overall. He hits two free throws. Porter Ali hits a triple...Jack leaves with GW up 21-13. The team is hitting their free throws, which is huge. Mulvey is seeing time at the 3, while Chris Davis is in at the 2. Never good when Davis is in. Jack returns with 8:05 left. Jack gets fouled, and goes 1-2 from the line. Jack is everywhere, scoring...and then, he gets his second foul. Everyone in the game for GW has two fouls. Hulett's 3 makes it 33-16, with five minutes left. Jack gets his first assist after a steal and a set up of Chapin. Jack then gets an and-one, and it's 38-16 as Navy calls time. Jack assists Woods, so the timeout doesn't matter...Hulett gets his third foul. He's good at that...but then again, both teams have 13 fouls. Jack scores, and has 20 with three minutes to go. There are only 17 rebounds between the two teams. GW is shooting 72%, and get fouled on all other possessions. Even when they do miss, they get the rebound and score. At the half, it's 48-25. Jack has 20-5-2 line. Navy had ten turnovers, six off steals. Jack drills a three to open the half, then assists Hector. Rosenblatt is the only one scoring for Navy...he has 11, and scores to make it 53-27. Jack has 26 after he hits a three. Hector (9) hits a three, making it 59-31. Jack gets his third foul. Jack scores off a Hector pass, and Mulvey adds another bucket. Rosenblatt keeps scoring...Jack gets his fourth foul, prompting Chris Davis to rush into the game. Oy. Ali scores a three, and it's 68-42, with eight minutes to go. They have 24 fouls as a team, but their shooting, and Navy's turnovers, are winning this game. This is ridiculous, in fouling terms. Michael King throws down a dunk and gets fouled...he sinks the freebie. There's not much else to say here. Chris Davis is getting assists. That's a good thing. GW is definitely getting all of the guys some time. The final is 84-60. Not the greatest, but definitely fine, considering they had to feel things out without Dwight Davis. Code:
2.4.83: at St. Bonaventure (7-13) Another team who is bloody awful at most things. In this case, offense in general, and rebounding. They are not good at anything...yet, their RPI is way higher than Navy. Of course, they're also 7-13, not 3-17 or whatever it is. Navy has a worse roster than GW, but they do have two guys, point man Chase Perry (maybe the ultimate 80s name) and SF Charlie Rodriguez, averaging 14 points a game. They don't have anyone rebounding more than six a game, and nobody with more than 2.1 assists. There's really nothing else to say about this. Hulett opens the game with a free throw. Jack drills a three, and Rodrigues hits a jumper to get the Bonnies going. Jack gets a foul out of Rodrigues, his second, and completes a three-point play. Hector hits a three, and it's 11-4 with sixteen left. Over the next few minutes, nothing of note really happens. The Bonnies have a player named John Blunt. That's a thing. Jack blocks Chase Perry all the way back to 1978, but GW is playing stagnant, and leads just 15-10 with 11:27 to go. I write that, and Hulett drills a three. Patterson has seven early points, which is good because Jack has two fouls and goes to the bench. GW threated to run away with it, up 24-12, but Norris Salvatore hit a three. Hulett hits a three, and begins taunting. Go ahead, pick up another technical, you imbecile. Jack hits a three upon returning, and he has 11. Patterson has 12, and it's 37-15, with 5:22 left. GW has just one turnover right now, to seven for the Bonnies. Jack (15) and Hector (14) are demolishing the Bonnies. Hulett comes back, and he's been doing it as well. Jack's line is 17-5-4, with 1:30 left, and GW up 47-26. The half ends with Hulett nearly getting another T, and the score, GW 47-27 at the break. Hulett commits his third foul to start the second half. Patterson hits another three...Woods follows a Jack miss, and has a nifty 5-4-3 line. Rodrigues has 13 for the Bonnies. Jack tosses down a dunk. Other than that, though, he's not shooting well. Hector is, though, especially after Jack passes. They both have 19. Jack gets two free throws, making it 58-33 with 13:00 elft. Jack scores again, and Chapin follows that with a strip and a layup. Stan Audley (another great 80s name, like a character played by...) hits a three. It's now 64-40, and Hulett hits a three. Jack assists Hulett, and then gets a steal, and assists Hulett on a three. He has 15, and Jack has a 23-7-7 line. Henry Massey hits a three for the Bonnies, who are getting more offense, but way too late. This seems to be a more complete effort by GW than they've had recently. Coming in on 5:46, it's 84-46, and Jack's going to come out shortly. He does so with 4:50, which gives me time to look up the guy I forgot earlier. John Cusack would play Stan Audley. I seriously couldn't remember his name...I could see his face, I knew he had a sister, but the name wouldn't come for me. Hell is getting older...it's even moreso on pain medication. Meanwhile, there's a minute left in the game...it's 90-55. This has played out. The final is 90-57...GW shot 56% from the field, 52% from 3. That's good. Week 15: 2.7-13.83
The top ten stayed intact, though there was minor shifting going on. Rice is your overwhelming #1. This seems like something that could have happened in the early 80s. North Carolina is #2. Our intrepid heroes are up to 19th, which is simply amazing. Granted, their SOS has to be awful (it is 94th). They are 6th in the mid-major poll (BYU, Washington, Southern Cal, UTEP and New Mexico ahead, Citadel right behind), and they are 14th in the RPI. They, along with St. Francis-NY, are considered locks for the NCAA as independents. Here is a quick thought about the top seeds in the NCAA: East: 1) Maryland 2) Princeton 3) Missouri 4) Cornell (5: GW) South: 1) North Carolina 2) Kansas 3) Pennsylvania 4) Baylor Midwest: 1) Rice 2) Southern Cal 3) Kansas State 4) Clemson West: 1) BYU 2) Washington 3) UTEP 4) Texas A&M (I forgot to print out the poll. Oh well, not much changed.) 2.7.83: vs North Texas (10-12) The Mean Green handed Jack his first-ever loss. Unfortunately for North Texas, that was, perhaps, their high-water mark last year. They finished 15-15, and failed to make the postseason. They're not headed there again this year, at 10-12 and unable to get consistency, despite a relatively solid roster. They have been better since a five-game losing streak to start the year. But they have not beaten anyone of quality...heck, they barely got by 3-20 Louisville a couple of weeks ago. The culprit for them is scoring (192nd), an inability to rebound consistently, and a lack of a flowing offense. They are 223rd in assists, and 175th in field goal percentage. They have four players who started games before this season, but realistically, only two starters back. Chuck Berkey leads the team in scoring, at 11.4 points per game. Charlie Nance scores 11.2, while Joe O'Reilly puts up 9.6, and 8.0 rebounds a game. They are without starting SF Richie Thom. In short, don't expect a win here, Mean Green fans. They're only suiting up eight scholarship players. Hulett hits GW's first shot, and Jack gets a score shortly after. With 17:10 left, it's 6-4, GW. Jack scores again, off a Hulett pass. It's 10-6 after O'Reilly gets two free throws. Richie Wille gets a three, and Hulett answers. Wille gets another three, and it's tied with 15:23 left. John Sandy dunks on Wille and gets the foul...Wille goes, and it's 15-12, GW. North Texas seems to always have a response to GW. Oliver Bowie gets NT the lead with 12 minutes left. There's a lid on GW's basket right now...they cannot score. With 10:44 left, it's 18-15. This is the game NT wanted...a slopfest. Jack's line at the moment is 4-6-3, as NT holds a 20-19 lead. Jack gets another assist, this on a Patterson three. GW leads 22-20. Jack gets yet another assist, as Patterosn strikes again. Jack gets a steal, and finds Hulett for a basket. Wille comes back and hits a three, and O'Reilly takes a charge from Jack. Unbelievable. It's now 27-27, after O'Reilly scores four in a row. Chapin fouls O'Reilly, who misses both free throws. Wille gets his third foul, and Patterson misses the freebie. Jack gets a steal, and Patterson hits a three. He has 11. Jack with another steal, and he gets the and-one. He's up to 7-8-6. Chapin with a steal and a layup...but Oliver Bowie htis a three. Chapin with another bucket, and Jack gets another steal. He gets O'Reilly to foul, makes it, but misses the free throw. Gregory Fazio hits a jumper, Patterson misses both free throws on the other end, and it's 39-32. Jack gets another foul out of O'Reilly, and hits both free throws. It's 41-32. Jack missed a dunk, and Chapin fouls John Clements with five seconds left. He missed both free throws. That was a frantic end to the half, but a sloppy frantic. The teams shot horribly from the line. Jack has an 11-9-6 line. Jack gets his tenth rebound on the first possession...here goes Hulett, arguing with the refs again. Just play the damn game, kid. O'Reilly, Nance and Wille have three fouls...Wille just got his fourth, argued, and picked up a technical. He's gone. It's now 44-36. Berkey draws a charge on Jack, and he's got to be careful. He only has two, but these refs seem whisle-quick. Jack has 13-10-6 right now...Chapin fouled Bowei and gave him and and-one. Jack answers with a three...he has 16-10-6 numbers. It's 51-41. Jack gets again, off of Fazio's foul...he now has 19. Woods gets a steal and a layup. Jack suffers his third foul...it's 56-43. Hulett hits...with fourteen minutes left, it's 58-46. Richie Grubb and Jack trade baskets. Fazio responds to Jack, and Jack hits a three. He has 24, Patterson 14. Grubb hits a three...he has eight, and is capable of hitting a bunch of shots quickly. He hits another, and GW calls time. It's 63-55...Nance hits a three. These guys just don't quit. Jack assists Woods, and Berkey answers. It's 65-60, nine minutes left. Patterson hits a three off a Jack pass. He's up to 24-11-8...Patterson has 17. Hulett scores, and it's back to ten. Jack sits, and Hulett and Sandy are the leaders on the floor. Clements hits to make it 70-62. Jack comes back with 6:13 left. Clements hits two free throws, and Jack misses a three. Grubb hits a three. Back to 70-67. Oy. Sandy to the line...misses the front end, but Hulett bails him out. The lid is going back on the hoop for GW. Jack blows it off and hits a shot. Patterson gets a steal, but nothing comes of it. Jack gets a steal, is fouled by Bowie, gets the layup, and the free throw. That's big...it's 77-69 with 2:49 left. Jack is at 29-13-8. Erich Cahill hits a basket, but Patterson gets two free throws. He has 19. Charlie Nance hits two free throws, and Patterson responds. He has 21, and it's 81-73, 1:35 left. Hulett gets fouled and injured, and has to come out. The final is 81-73, but now questions loom on Hulett. After the game, it's discovered Hulett has a torn ligament. He'll be out for the next six weeks. Add in Davis' broken foot, and the starting backcourt is gone for the rest of the regular season. How will GW respond? Code:
2.12.83: at St. Francis-NY (16-7) The Terriers have a nice resume, having beaten a couple ranked teams (#21 Iowa State, #20 Colorado State on the road), as well as Seton Hall. There are a couple bad losses in there, but really, this is a quality team. They play good defense that disrupts the shot-taking process, due to their 6.1 blocks/game (17th). The offense is balanced on three levels. C Isandro Moreno averages 15.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, along with 3.5 blocks a game. Forward Guy Carruthers averages 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds a game, while guard Oscar Diaz averages 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. Jake Wildman averages 9.4 points in just 19.5 minutes off the bench. WIth the injuries to GW, and this being on the road, this shapes up as an L for the Colonials. Jack and Patterson will have to shoot very well for them to have a chance. Patterson and Sandy start out as the backcourt. Oscar Diaz hits a three, and Jack finds Woods. It's 5-4 after a couple of minutes. There's no way GW is going to score as much as they have...it is doubtful their defense can be as solid as it has been, either. Just wonder where they're going to get the points...Hector? Sandy? Jack fould Ali to tie it at 8-8...then hit a bucket on his own, for his first points. At 14:00, it's 10-8, GW. Diaz (9 points) hits another three, giving the Terriers an 11-10 lead. Jack has an early 2-2-3 line. Jack gets a foul out of Carruthers, and a three-point play. Wildman hits his first bucket...Jack gets a steal, assists Patterson, who gets fouled. 19-13, and Hector has eight. Jack hits a bucket, and he and Patterson and working a good two-man game at the moment. Wildman hits a bucket, but Woods counters. Jack follows his own miss with a big dunk, and it's 25-15. Wildman follows, but Jack finds Patterson. He has a 9-4-5 line at the moment. Moreno gets a foul out of Woods and a three-point play. Sandy is fouled by Ruffin, and hits both free throws. Mulvey draws a charge on Diaz. That's big, as he has two. He, Ruffin and Carruthers all have two. Ali fouls Moreno, who hits the shot and free throw. Jack comes back in after a breather with GW up, 29-23. Sandy scores, and Ruffin throws it away. Jack gets Ruffin's third foul, and hits both free throws. With 4:15 left, GW is up ten. This isn't sustainable. Moreno hits a three, then checks his first foul. Chapin hits the two free throws. Carruthers fouls Mulvey off a Jack pass...it's his third, and the basket counted. Ali follows with a bucket. It's 40-26, and Jack has an 11-4-6 line. Patterson scores; he has 12, and GW has opened up a big 42-29 lead. Jack answers Michael MacKinnon's three with one of his own. At the half, it's 45-29. Jack has a 14-4-6 line, and Patterson has 12. The Terriers had 11 turnovers, comapred to just two for GW. The Terriers did outrebound GW, 21-17. GW is in a 2-3, and Patterson suffers a foul. Then Sandy does. Dawkins blocks Moreno. Jack gets the first points almost three minutes into the half. Diaz gets a steal, and a layup...Carruthers has yet to score this game. He's shooting poorly. Jack hits another, and it's 49-31. Patterson scores again, and the lead is 20. Moreno and Diaz have 11 each. Jack throws down a monster dunk, giving him 20. Wildman scores, making it 53-35 with twelve minutes left. Jack assists Hector. Diaz drills a three, but Ali responds with a rim-rattling three. Ali gets a Jack pass for the hoop. Ali hits another three...he has 12, which I think may be a career high. It's 63-40, as Jack gets a break at the 8:40 mark. Patterson checks his fourth foul and comes out for Jack and...Chris Davis. Jack gets Carruthers' fourth foul, and two free throws, then another hoop. It's 24-9-8 for Jack, and 67-43. Nobody expected this. Mulvey hits a three off a Jack pass. It's 70-45 with 5:25 left...Jack finds Snday for a basket. Jack hits again...he doesn't get a chance at the triple-double, as he gets pulled before he could get his tenth rebound. It's 76-47 though...and St. Francis is shooting 40%. They aren't playing terribly. They have 19 turnovers, while GW has seven. That's the key. Rice is a unanimousd #2, while BYU and UNC flip-flopped. UTEP jumped from 9th to 4th, while Washington and Maryland slid to 7th and 8th. Other than that, it's pretty intact. Kansas State (17-8) is tenth, which is amazing. They are ridiculously talented, though. GW moved up to 17th. That is likely the highwater mark for this group, especially with the injuries they have. 2.14.83: vs Virginia (10-13) George Washington gets an unusual visitor today, as an ACC team comes calling. Granted, it's last-place Virginia...but it's still an ACC team. Oddly enough, Virginia is 2-8 in-conference, but both wins are against #20 Duke. They dont have any other marquee wins, so as long as GW doesn't wear Duke unis to the game, they may be okay. The Cavs are in transition, coming off a 24-10 year that saw them reach the Elite Eight. They reached the NCAA Tournament the year before, but only two starters are left from those teams. Virginia gets after the boards, but they allow a lot of them, too. They don't shoot well (151st in offense, 189th in FG%). But teams shoot very poorly against them (39%, 8th overall). They draw fouls and foul a lot. So, this could expect to be a rather ugly affair. They are a young team, starting two juniors, a sophomore, and two freshmen. SG Clayton Kaminsky is their leading scorer, at 15.0 points a game. Lead guard Douglas Pinard averages 9.9 points and 7.0 assists a game. With the injuries GW has, this is definitely no sure thing. Virginia has a decided advantage at the guard spots. This should be a close one. Virginia opens with three rebounds, two offensive. This is no good. Joe Hunter starts the scoring. Jack hits a three for GW, giving them the early lead. Hector scores, but Kaminsky answers. Hector scores again. Virginia has a player in the post whose name is Reto Obereithner. I won't write that again. GW takes an 11-6 lead...Jack is shooting at will; he has two shots blocked on one possession, but he's going to keep firing. Jack finds Patterson, and it's 13-6 with 12:20 left. Chapin is battling with Reto (2 points, 4 boards). Clarence Dube is in the game now; that would be the perfect 70s name. Jack's line: 3-7-1. Jack is shooting cold, but Hector is hitting. Douglas Pinard scored, then picks up two quick fouls. With 7:03 left, it's 13-12, GW. John Sandy dribbled all over the place, then got called for traveling. Woods scores to end what felt like a half-hour drought for GW. Hector gets an and-one, and Pinard's third foul, and it's 18-14 with 3:46 left. Reto draws a charge on Muvey, then gets a foul on Woods. It's 18-15 with 3:26 left. Woods drills a shot, giving him four points...Jack is very quiet, still with only three points. This has been as ugly as promised. UVA is shooting 27%, GW 33%. At the half, it's 20-19, GW. Yuck. Can't make them all pretty. Jack opens the second half by getting a foul on Jurado, and the bucket. He hits the free throw, doubling his scoring. Joe Hunter gets a three-point play, and Hector hooks Chapin up. Hector scores...he leads all scorers with 11. Hunter counters. Action is picking up a bit, as it's 27-24. Jack finds Chapin after rebounding his own miss, but Reto responds. Jack throws down a dunk...he has 8-12-3 right now. He is shooting terribly, but making up for it elsewhere. That said, he hits another shot, getting the double-double...it's 33-26. And he hits again. Dube blocks Jack on a dunk attempt, and Jurado gets a basket. Then Jack assists Ali on a three, and Jurado scores off the next possession. It's 38-30 with 13:22 left. Michael King manuvers his way in for a bucket. Jack takes a break, and Patterson comes back. 2.19.83: at VCU (15-9) Last year, GW beat VCU, 90-78. The Rams made it to the NIT, but they have their designs on more this year. They are one of the bubble teams on the outside looking in, so a win over GW, however depleted, would bolster their stock considerably. VCU is a good rebounding team, they don't turn it over, and they keep opponents from getting comfortable on offense. Their schedule hampers them considerably, as they have arguably not played a single elite team. They have beaten #20 Duke, but Duke's RPI is rubbish. VCU hast lost three of four, and four of six...three of those four losses are to losing teams, and the fourth got William & Mary to .500. This team has experience, with two four-year starters, and one three-year starter. C Major Knotts averages 16.9 points and 4.9 rebounds; G Eric Butler averages 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds, and point man averages 11.8 points and 4.7 rebounds. John Sandy draws a foul on the game's first shot. He sinks both; Chapin draws a foul, and hits one of two. Jose Seward throws it down for VCU's first bucket. Eric Butler hits a triple. Jack gets his first basket, tying it at five with 17:08 left. VCU is limiting GW on the offensive boards so far. Jack is getting offensive tip chances, but cannot connect. Woods gets fouled by Butler, and hits one of two. Richie Rojas ties it on a tip. Jack gets a bucket, and has a 4-10-0 line. This game is really frustrating to watch. Jack hits a jumper...Chapin draws a charge. Hector hits two free throws...King fouls, then gets called for traveling. Chris Davis is in, as Jack takes a break. Davis gets fouled, and Kenny Hartwell gets T'd up. Davis hits all four free throws. Amazing. Sandy scores, making it 26-20 with 2:28 left, and Jack comes back. King scores, but Rojas counters. Jack throws down a dunk, making it 30-24. That's how the half ends. Jack has an 8-11-0 line. Neither team had a steal, but there were eleven turnovers in the half. That should tell you what you need to know here. Patterson gets his third and fourth fouls seven seconds into the second half. So GW will have to go without him. Woods gets his third foul. The freshmen are so foul-prone. Ali drills a three, making it 35-24. It's kind of amazing how GW's defense rises in these occasions. Of course, VCU scores twice...the latter answerd by Chapin. Major Knotts is heating up. He has 11. With 15:40 left, it's 37-30. Sandy drills a three on a Jack pass, his first assist of the game. Jack's really cold, not hitting a thing. His line: 8-13-1. Woods hits off a Jack pass, and Chapin gets his third foul. Rojas throws it down, cutting the lead back to ten. Knotts hits again. Jack cannot get a bucket right now. Chapin comes out, and Jack moves from the point to the center spot. Jack hits a jumper, then assists Sandy on a breakaway. With 10:45 left, it's 47-37. Davis tries to take command, but everyone says, "Well, you're Chris Davis". He misses. Knotts (16) hits again. Not sure he's missed this half. Oh, now he misses one. Jack finds Mulvey, making it 51-39. Jack has a 10-14-4 line. Not great, but in this sort of game, it's doing the job. Davis shoots again, forgetting who he is. GW has nine fouls this half. Make that ten; Mulvey charges on Seward. And now Maley has an illegal screen. Yet, VCU is not getting closer. Jack hits a jumper, and Seward answers. Jack scores again...is he heating up? Seward hits a three...55-45 with 4:17 left. Jack comes out, and GW gets four offensive boards, and then hits. And now King hits. It's 59-47 with 2:20 left. Chapin scores...Rojas responds. And Justin Evans gets a dunk off a steal. Jack comes back with 1:28 left, as James Angel hits a three. 61-54, and Jack gets a rebound...John Sandy just fouled Eric Butler shooting a three. It's 61-55, and here comes Sandy. He hits two to ice it. Major Knotts hits a three, making it 63-58, but it's too little, too late. Week 17: 2.21-27.83
The top ten stayed intact, minus some small jockeying around. Rice is your unanimous top team. Looking more at them, they have an epic offense (one far better than the GW juggernaut of last year). They are also the top rebounding team in the nation. So, they're #2 in total offense (#3 in field goal percentage), #2 in rebounding, #2 in free throw percentage...they are not good at shooting the three, but they do everything well. They're also a veteran team. They lost last week, at Baylor, and stayed the unanimous #1. That's how revered they are this year. They also went to Texas A&M after the Baylor loss, and beat the 12th-ranked Aggies. GW moved up one more spot, to 16th. So, they are acquitting themselves well since both Davis and Hulett went down. Jack's scoring has gone down, but his rebounds and assists are up. Code:
2.24.83: vs Marquette (16-11) The Golden Eagles come to town, still in hunt for a NCAA berth (there is a line ahead of them). GW beat them, 78-62, a year ago. They return all five starters from that, as well as a new starter in SG Courtney Smith. Smith is averaging 12.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game this year. That's behind only SF Jeffrey Dunagan (15.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg). The Golden Eagles are decent across the board, very active on the offensive rebounds...they do turn it over a good bit, but other than that, and generating turnovers, they are solid. GW will have to shoot well to have a chance. Sanday opens the game with a foul. Brilliance. Woods opens the scoring; Smith ties it, but Patterson gets a three-point play. Jack gets on the board via free throws. Marquette takes a 8-7 lead at 15:27, and they begin trading the lead back and forth. Woods gets his second foul and exits for Porter Ali. Jack is shooting poorly again, which is always relative...but he's shooting like garbage. Hector gets a steal and a dunk. With twelve minutes left, GW is up 15-14. Jack's line, with ten minutes left, is 2-2-3. GW leads 19-17. Jack keeps up his funk, and not in a good eighties way. It's 22-19 with 6:40 left. Jack misses again...he's got only two points, and gets a boot. Ali ties the game at 26-26 with 4:20 left. Woods gives GW the lead back, and Jack hits a three. His line is 5-4-3. GW is beginning to make some moves, taking a 33-26 lead. Marquette has nine turnovers...Jack gets a bucket right before the half, giving GW a 39-31 lead at the break. GW has been better, and Jack can never be held down for long. He's 7-5-3 at the moment. Hector has nine...he has really been quite good since being taking over a starting spot. Smith has nine for Marquette. Jack hits the first bucket of the second half. Seth Bell hits, making it 41-35. Jack hits two free throws, and I believe that's the first scorer in double figures. Bell scores again, getting it back to six. Chris Walsh drills a three. Smith scores, and it's 45-44...Jack assists Patterson to get it back to three, 47-44, with fourteen minutes left. Hector hits an and-one, making it 50-44. Jack assists Patterson on a three; Hector has 17 to lead all scorers. Jack hits, giving him 15, then gets a great block of a Smith dunk attempt. Walsh hits his second three of the half, but GW responds. Smith hits a three...it's 57-50 with 10:33 left. Jack now has a double-double, at 15-10-5. He throws down a big dunk, and the crowd goes nuts. Woods hits a bucket, making it 61-51. Walsh hits his third three of the half, and Marquette is charging again. Sandy responds with a three, and Dunagan hits another. Good back-and-forth between the teams now. The Golden Eagles are one foul out of the bonus. Jack takes a break, but not for long. With five minutes left, he returns, GW up 67-59. Jack gets an and-one, hits the free throw, and makes it 70-59. Huey Corbin (oh, there's an 80s name) hits a three, and it's now 72-64. Chapin hits a basket, getting it back to ten. GW is able to keep things around 8-12...Jack gets a breakaway dunk that ends the threat with a minute to go. It's 82-66, and that's how it ends. Jack's shooting is going down, but he's also expected to pick up a higher volume of shots. Patterson scored 21 on 8-16 shooting. He is becoming the second option that Hulett should have been...but more consistent. I wonder if, when Hulett and Davis return, they will find their roles reimagined. Code:
2.25.83: at Georgia Southern (14-12) The Eagles reached the NCAA a year ago; this year looks to be much more precarious, as they are simply fighting for their postseason lives. They are led by guard Darwin Webster, a four-year starter who is averaging 22.3 points a game, along with 5.4 rebounds. Forward Carl Sullivan puts up 13.3/7.6/2.1, while forward Jerrold Hatchett scores ten points a game in just seventeen minutes off the bench. They shoot horribly, but they get after the boards on offense (8th in the nation). They are middle-of-the-road, but they can beat GW. Without Jack, the Colonials are decidedly not middle-of-the-road. They are a dumpster fire off to the side. Carl Sullivan hit stwo free throws off a Chapin foul to start. Jack gets two blocks on one possession. GW takes nearly four minutes to score; Chapin did following a Jack miss. Sandy picks up two fouls and has to sit. Jack misses a dunk, which sends Marty King into a rage over no foul being called. Jack responds with a three, making it 8-5. GW has seven fouls in the first seven minutes. Jack hits five in a row to get it to 13-10, but Joshua Rae follows with a three. Ali hits, and it's 17-14 with 9:10 left. GW has nine fouls, GA Southern one. Oy. Hector finally gets on the board, then commits his second foul. This is atrocious, this amount of fouls. Patterson stays in, and hits a three to make it 22-19. King gets it to within one. Patterson hits another three, and GW takes a 24-22 lead. Jack comes back, and hits a three. He has an 11-3-0 line. He hits another, and the Eagles are cold. GW is trying to get them back on track, throwing the ball away, giving them stelas, traveling, and putting them on the line. Woods gets an and-one, misses the free throw, but GW gets the board. Nothing comes of it. Chris Davis scores on a free throw, then comes right out. Jack commits his first foul in the final minute. King hits a three...Jack suffers his second foul. Crying out loud...at the half, it's 34-29. Jack has a 13-4-0 line, with two fouls. GW committed sixteen fouls in the first half. SIXTEEN. That's gotta change. Jack hits a three on the first possession, and Joshua follows. Chapin fouls Cleveland Grubb. It's 37-34 two minutes in. Darwin Webster gets the Eagles to within one...and Joshua Rae gives them the lead, 39-37. Jack gets fouled, goes one of two...Sandy hits a three to tie things at 41. King hits a three off a Jack pass, and Woods coaxes a foul out of Webster. Jack has a 17-6-2 line, and GW has a 46-41 lead with fourteen minutes left. Patterson scores, giving him 10. Chris Davis gets fouled and sinks both free throws. Webster scores, and the score is 52-49 with 11:37 left. Jack hits a three, giving them a little breather. Jack then throws down a dunk...he has 22-8-2, and it's 57-49. Jack comes out at the ten-minute mark. Mulvey drills a three, and GW is one of their patented second-half runs. Jack hits one a couple of minutes later...it's 62-54. Jack has 24-10-2. Rae has 17 for the Eagles, Webster 11. Patterson has 12. Five minutes left, Ali hits for a 66-54 lead. Jack takes a hard foul by Webster, gets up, sinks both...then gets his fourth foul, one hard on Webster. He chooses his hard fouls wisely. Jack then hits in Webster's eye. Rae responds with a three...2:30 left, and it's 70-59. Then he hits a long three...this is a Jack statement in the making here. He comes out in the final minute, up 75-59. King had a big role in this too, scoring twelve big points. Code:
2.27.83: vs South Carolina (14-14) The Gamecocks own two wins against teams with winning records this year. One of those was against Georgia Southern. They have the ability to score, but the capability of laying an egg on the offensive end. The key seems to be holding them to 65 points. Only two of their wins came when they scored fewer than 65. GW has the ability to go on amazing runs, and break your will by doing so. South Carolina is prone to allowing such runs. Defensively, they are an albatross. Offensively, if they find a rhythm, they can be a headache. But it appears defense, to them, is just the inconvenient time you have to spend before you get the ball back. They are generally inexperienced; only one starter came back from last year's group. That player, Otto Sharma, is averaging 13.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.6 steals. Two other players, Darrick Martin and Eli Torres, average 14 points a game. The backcourt will have its work cut out for it. But the frontcourt will have a major advantage. Bruce Woods and Manny Chapin could have big games in this one, along with Jack. This is a small team along the backline. Chapin wins the tip, and Patterson scores to open things up. Chapin gets fouled, and hits both freebies. Martin throws down a dunk to get SC started. Chapin scores again. Jack gets an assist early, but he's laying low to start. Hector has five points in the first four minutes. After five minutes, it's 14-8. Jack goes to the bench after a foul...not sure if he has two. He may. GW holds a 17-14 lead with 13 minutes left. SC is going to live and die by the three, it appears. Yeah, Jack has to have two, because there have been stoppages, and he hasn't come back. Sandy has gotten more aggressive lately...he throws one day. The Apocalypse Twins are in...as is Chris Davis. Amazed the world hasn't collapsed. With 8:30 left, it's 23-20, GW. Davis gets on the board, and here comes Jack. He has no points and two fouls. Jack immediately goes to the line and gets his first points. King gets a layup and foul off a Jack assist, and it's 30-26 with 6:11 left. Martin hits a three, and GW calls time. Jack gets a foul out of Sharma, and hits both freebies. Hector picks up his second foul...Martin has ten points. Jack gets two more. All of his points have come from the free throw line. SC takes a lead with three minutes to go, but Ali responds with a layup plus the foul. Jack has a 6-3-3 line...and Davis gets into the assist act. Patterson hits a three...he has 10, and it's 44-39 with 1:17 left. Chris Davis with a three! He's getting confident! Jack gets the bucket and the foul! GW is up 50-39 with :47 left...in fact, that's how the half ends. Jack has a 9-4-4 line, and GW shot 54%. South Carolina shot 50%, but had seven turnovers, and 16 fouls in the first half. GW has ten...but their prospects for the second half look good. Jack gets a steal to start the second half, gets fouled while throwing it down...Eli Torres responds with a dunk of his own. Jack gets another steal, which results in a Hector three. Chapin picks up his third foul. Woods scores, Patterson assist. It's 58-43 with 17:42 left. GW has gotten careless the past few minutes, and SC gets it to 60-48. Jack picks up foul number three on an illegal screen, and Sharma hits a three...Hector responds with a three-point play, then gets a steal, and a feed to Jack, who throws it down with the foul. All of a sudden, it's 68-51. Jack finds Sandy for a hoop. Jack then throws it down. It's amazing how easy SC gives up the drive. Jack drives and finds Hector (18) for the bucket. It's 72-52 with 11:54 left. Sandy then throws one down. It's like there's a slam dunk competition. Hey, that's a good idea.... Jack's line is at 17-6-6 right now. There's a lot of nothing going on...Jack just got a steal and a dunk. See? I write it, it happens. Hector assists on Ali, and Jack and Hector come out with GW up, 80-57. I actually thought these guys would give GW some difficulty, but I guess with a gaping hole defense, that's tough. This could be Jack's first game under 20 this year. 4:58 left...Jack is at 19-8-6. Eli Torres hits, and it's 80-63. Jack gets a block, but Woods a foul. It's 80-65. Michael King hits a three, and SC has run out of time. Jack goes to the line, and he hits his free throws...he has 21, and promptly comes out. I wonder if Marty King knew. The final is 89-70, and honestly, that game was not anywhere close to that. Michael King has really grown throughout the year...he had 15. Since starting 0-2, GW has reeled off twenty-five straight wins. Code:

Week 18: 2.28-3.6.83 Rice is still atop the polls. The entire top ten is intact, except Penn leaps into the tenth spot. GW, at 25-2 and co-owners of the best record in the nation (with Rice), moved up two spots, to 14th. First-year coach Antoine Bennett is having the exact opposite season than Marty King, GW's coach. WVU is dreadful at offense, and at most defensive categories. They are led by their two-man post, Ty Turman (13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds), and Sheldon Ware (7.6 points, 6.6 rebounds). There is a lot of experience in this WVU club...four players with 105+ game experience, and six others with at least 50. This program is undergoing a lot of change, and this may be rock bottom. Ronny Hagans opens the scoring, while Hector responds off a Jack pass. Jack hits a three on the next possession to open his scoring. Andre Welty responds with a three, and Jack hits a jumper...Hagans hits a three. Jack goes 1 for 2 from the line, and it's already a quick 8-8. Jack hits another three...he's got a 9-0-1 line. Sheldon Ware draws a charge on Jack. Elwood Brown gives WVU a 14-11 lead, but Sandy hits a three. Jack gets two blocks in a row. Hagans hits to get a 16-14 lead...WVU ties it, and WVU retakes the lead. Jack has a few blocks this half. Sandy picks up five points, and it's 20-18 with 7:38 left. Jack missed two free throws, I think, for the first time this season. His line is 9-2-3, and it's 21-20 with 4:47 left. Sandy hits two free throws to bust the stagnation. Hagans hits a three, and it's 25-23, WVU. Chapin ties it, and Turman breaks it immediately. Jack has, at least, five blocks this half. Six. Woods has two fouls and sits...Jack gets fouled by Elwood Brown, and hits those freebies. WVU holds a 31-27 lead to end the half. Jack has an 11-4-3 line. Hagans has 12 for WVU. GW has to do better than their eight turnovers. Jack scores to open the second half. GW has 9 blocks. Jack assists Chapin, and the game is tied. WVU regains the lead, but Jack ties it. He's up to 15-8-4. Chapin commits his third foul, and WVU takes a 34-33 lead. Michael King hits two free throws, making it 35-34. Sandy drills a three, giving GW a 38-34 lead. King skies over everyone for a big dunk. Ali scores, and GW has their biggest lead, 42-36. Woods commits his fourth foul, making it 42-38...Jack hits with 13:11 left. Jack gets fouled by Turman, and hits both free throws. Hector scores, though he's been quiet this game. Chapin gets a steal and a dunk, and GW has opened a big 50-38 lead. Jack draws a foul on Ware, and gets the freebies. King scores, and the lead is 54-40, with 9:38 left. Jack draws a foul from Hagans, and hits those free throws. It's 56-43, and the defense is clamping down. Chapin hits two free throws; Sandy then hits two free throws. 60-45, 7:00 left. Turman with a three-point play, and King responds with two free throws. Looking forward to these numbers afterward. Sandy goes to the line, goes 1-2. Jack with another block. He's got 23-11-4, plus however many blocks he has. With 5:11 left, it's 63-49. Markus Wood hits a three, getting it to 63-52 with 3:48 left. Jack assists Woods on a hoop, right before Woods fouls out. Elwood Brown scores, making it a 65-56 game. Patterson hits one of two free throws, but Sandy fouls Welty. The lead is down to eight with 1:52 left. Sandy hits two free throws. Chapin gets a three-point play, and the game is over. The final is 71-61, and Jack, well...Jack had himself a game defensively. He had eleven blocks. Eleven blocks. He shot only 11 times, and scored 23, with 14 rebounds. Code:

That should be a boon to this team, as their offense has slid as a result of their loss. Patterson has become a much better player in their absence, which couldn't have happened without them being out of the lineup. NCAA Reveal: This year, the committee would be severely critized for their placement. West: Rice is the #1 seed, which is obvious. But BYU, who spent the last month of the season at #2 in the poll, #4 in the RPI, is #2 in the region. Why? Why didn't they get the top seed in the Midwest? This makes no sense. Nebraska is the #3 seed, and Penn is the #4 seed. Those are fine. The Colonials own a 70-42 win over the Hoyas this year. Jack went for 38 on 12-14 shooting, 12-12 from the line, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. Here's the boxscore: Code:
Both teams are different now. The Hoyas were 3-6 after that loss. They rebounded nicely, winning 12 in a row to win the BIg East regular season title, and the tournament. Of course, only Seton Hall was worth a damn in that conference, so the Hoyas feasted on other also-rans. And GW lost their starting backcourt, and grew as a defensive presence that does enough around Jack. They'll have their backcourt back, though it's not expected that they will make much of an impact this round. The Pick: GW by 11. Jack will be Jack, and the Hoyas have nobody who can check him. But Hector, Chapin, Woods, and the return of Davis, should overwhelm the Hoyas and their lack of offense and rebounders. Hulett and Davis are in the starting lineup. Jack blocks the first shot of the game. Davis, who already feels at home, commits the first foul. Then he hits the first bucket. Hulett commits a foul on a three; Julius Hamilton hits all three. Jack assists Davis on a bucket...with 15:32 left, it's 4-3. Yeesh. Nathan Long hits a three for the Hoyas, then argues a foul on the other end. Hector hits upon hitting the game, making it 6-6. Jack hits a three, and if he gets going...this one is over. He has a 9-14-7 line. Chapin gets a three-point play...it's now 47-29 with 15:13 left. Hermann hits a three. Hulett, who is rusty, draws a foul, but hits just one of two. He has 3. Jack hits a jumper, giving him 11 points. Georgetown wastes a possession, then wastes another on two straight shot-clock violations. It's 50-33 with 10:50 left. Hulett hits a three, finally. Moriarty responds with a jumper. Mitchell hits, making it 53-37. Jack missed another free throw...yeesh. Jack has had several shots blocked. It's 54-41 with 6:30 left. Jack sits, Davis comes back. He has 18, which is a game-high for now. Hulett commits his fourth foul on a three-point play, and it's back to 55-44. Davis hits the dagger, though...a three off a Jack pass. Jack gets a foul, plus the bucket...he now has 15-18-8. Davis has 21. It's 61-48...Davis takes an ill-advised three. Jack gets his 20th rebound of the game, and exits the game with a minute left, and George Washington is up, 63-48. GW beat Yale, 88-74, back in December. Jack was going through his monster run at the time, and scored 36 on 14-17 shooting. Sandy also broke out that game, scoring 15 on 5-9. Here is that boxscore. Code:
Yale was a major thorn in GW's side, as they didn't pull away until late. Gabriel Smith, Kevin Manning and Antoine Verdin all played great roles in that first round. Even though Yale lost by 14, it felt a lot closer. Pick: GW by four. This should be nip-and-tuck the whole way. Yale is probably the better team...it would not be a shock if this is where GW's season ends. This is a very tough second-round opponent. Woods commits a foul on the first possession. Gabe Smith picks Jack's pocket, and it's 3-0 immediately. Bill Larkin hits a three...Jack responds with GW's first points. Verdin hits a three, and it's 9-3. Chapin gets a three-point play. Jack hits a bucket, and it's 9-8. Jack steals and gets a dunk, and GW takes the lead. Jack scores again...then assists Sandy. Manning gets a steal and a layup, and Jack responds to that. Both teams have seven turnoers, and Yale has a 22-20 rebounding edge. Davis gets hurt early in the second half, but he stays in. Davis ends up with the first point, hitting a three. Yale responds immediately. Jack finds Hulett, and it's 39-35. It's 13-6-6 for Jack...Gabe Smith has four points, but gets it to within two for Yale. GW had a lengthy possession, but got no points. Davis hits a three, and Jack adds one of his own. It's 46-40...Davis hits another jumper. Escalante responds, but Jack responds to that. It's 50-42 with 11:32 left. Larkin finds Marty Chilton, making it 50-44. Manning hits a jumper...back to four. Jack is blocked by Verdin, but Hulett steals a pass and gets the dunk. Sandy nails a three as Jack takes a seat, and Chapin draws a charge on Smith. Sandy hits another three...he is Yale's villain. He has ten, and it's 61-48, after Hector scores. Braden hits a jumper, and Smith gets a steal...Hulett gets his fourth foul, and Jack comes back in. Manning gets Yale to 61-52, but Davis responds. Verdin responds to that, then gets a steal, and a layup. It's back to 63-56 with 4:30 left. Braden scores, and GW is cowering, somehow. Manning scores. 63-60. Jack misses, but Davis gets a follow. Verdin makes 1-2 from the line. Hulett draws a foul off Larkin, and hits both free throws. 2:55 left. Jack misses a three. Woods collects his fourth foul, but Larkin turns it over. Jack gets a breakaway dunk. Snelling scores and Chapin fouls him. The free throw makes it 69-64. Yale is fouling. Jack goes to the line...he hits both. 71-64, 1:35 left. Manning with a three. Sandy goes to the line. He hits both. 73-67, 1:26 left. Escalante gets the tip. Davis to the line. He goes 1-2, but Chapin gets the rebound. He goes 1-2, and Jack gets Larkin to turn it over. Hector hits 1-2, and it's 76-69. Davis goes to the line, hits both, and this is over. 78-69 with :18 left. Yale hits a three, but Davis hits two more. Escalante hits a three, Davis hits 1-2 from the line, and it's over...81-75, GW moves on. That was an incredibly hectic last few minutes for the Colonials. Jack and Davis finished with 22 each. Chapin had four points, but 12 big rebounds. Jack may have had his worst game of the season, going just 9-23, and only at the line twice. He did get three blocks and two steals, but his shooting issues are a problem. Regardless, GW, the impossible team, is back into the Sweet Sixteen. Code:

NCAA Sweet Sixteen: vs Duke (22-11)
The Blue Devils reached the Elite Eight last year; this game will allow someone to repeat on last year's success. They have reached the NCAA title game, in 1968-69, where they lost. They have not gotten closer than the Elite Eight since. Duke scores, and scores well. They are efficient, they move the ball, and they shoot from the line very well (sixth in the nation). They also shoot from outside well (11th). They allow others to score, perhaps because they prefer an up-and-down pace. They are led by guard Douglas Toscano (21.8 ppg) and C Bob Warren (14.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg). They have seven players G/B or B/B. By all accounts, they should blow GW out of the water. Toscano is an exception scorer by the ratings; he has a 99 at the 3. This team's achilles heel is perimeter defense...they are simply atrocious. If GW is going to have a shot, they have to shoot well. Hulett and Davis will have to have exceptional games; so will Patterson. And Chapin will have to get on the boards, furiously. Warren opens the scoring for Duke. Woods collects two fouls in the first minute. Orville Ayer hits a three, and it's 5-0, just like that. Warren gets a foul off Sandy, and he hits the free throw. GW calls a timeout. Jack throws it down for GW's first points, but Shad Goodman scores. Davis hits a three, and it's 10-5 with four minutes gone. Toscano hits, and Jack is blocked by Warren. GW has gone cold...Goodman hits. Ayer hits a jumper. It's 16-6. Davis is fouled by Ayer...he hits both free throws. Jack gets a tip...but Carter Caston follows. It's 18-10. Jack has a 4-5-0 line, and just picked up his first foul. Hector gets on the board, but Caston answers. Jack hits a three, cutting it to 20-15. Jack gets fouled by Carlton Sandberg, a Duke name if I ever saw one. He hits two free throws, cutting it to 20-17. Goodman hits a shot, and Jack responds with a three, then a steal. He gets fouled, goes and hit sboth free throws. He has 14-7-0, and it's 23-22. Caston hits a basket...with 7:10 left, Jack is keeping this team in the game. Davis ties it on a three off a Jack pass. Ayer hits a three...Jack gets fouled by Joseph Tu. He makes both free throws. Woods draws a charge from Sandberg. Goodman hits, and it's out to 32-27 for Duke. GW is shooting just 23%. Amazing they are anywhere near this game...Duke is shooting 61%. Hulett drills a three, making it 32-20. Then he drills Goodman. Goodman hits both free throws...Sandy follows a Hulett miss with a dunk. Toscano hits a three, and it's 37-32. Sandy answers with one of his own. At the half, it's 38-35, Duke. That's gotta be a major moral victory for GW. They shot 29%, Duke shot 60%, and it's 38-35. Jack had 16-9-1 in the half...Davis had eight. Goodman had ten for Duke. Toscano opens the scoring for Duke in the second half...Ayer finds GOodman. 42-35. Toscano hits another shot, causing Marty King to call a timeout. Think he'll remind his team they have Jack, and get him the ball? No, Hulett and Davis shoot. Woods gets a shot to fall, making it 46-37. Sandy hits a jumper...Jack throws it out of bounds. GW is getting offensive boards, but they cannot connect. Ayer connects on a three. GW has gone even colder in the second half. I say that, and Davis hits a three. 50-42, 11:24 left. Someone has to make shots on this team. Goodman gets fouled by Porter Ali, and sinks one of two. Davis gets a breakway, but Toscano answers. Duke is slowly pulling away. Ayer gets a steal and a dunk. Say goodbye to...
Manny Chapin, C: Chapin is the only senior on this roster. He played sparingly his freshman year, and was only a big reserve his sophomore and junior seasons. His senior year, though, he became a starter, and a valuable rebounder for the team. He wasn't the best scorer (4.9 ppg, 43% shooting), but he was a capable free throw shooter (37-48), and, more importantly, a good rebounder and defender. He never scored more than 14 in a game, but he also never took more than nine shots in a game. Not bad for a ** recruit (469th overall). Code:
Chapin being the lone departure means that GW will only bring in one freshman next year. There are three rising seniors--Davis, Sandy, and Mulvey. Jack, Hulett, Ali and Chris Davis are rising juniors. Hector, Michael King and Orlando Maley are rising sophomores, while C Glenn Grayson and F Willie Alcorn are redshirting this season. Who knows what kind of impact they'll have. |

The Record Books
Jack's 1982 season saw him score 837 points. While it was not as much as his 1981 total (883 points), he played two fewer games. It is also the 9th-highest output by a player in a single season in history. His 1981 campaign is still 3rd overall. Brian Crawford, who was a senior at Rice a year ago, actually outscored Jack (842 points), but they played more games. Jack has 1720 total points, which is a hundred more than #2 in GW history, Randell Hotchkiss. Here are the other categories: Rebounding: 716 (8th); leader is Charlie Epperson '62, with 919 Offensive Reb: 252 (2nd); leader is Sheldon Hannon '66, with 262 Assists: 417 (3rd); leader is Alvaro Jones '75, with 609 Steals: 135 (3rd); leader is Jack Rendon '70, with 210 Blocks: 200 (1st); national leader is Jonathan McDade, Yale '72, with 587 He has realistic shots at being the all-time scoring leader. George Sarver, UTEP '66, put up 2815 in his career. The national rebounding leader is Michael Diaz, Maryland '54. He had 1303. So, that's attainable. Otis McDonald (UNC '60) put up 1022 assists...that's probably not attainable. Transfers: Willis Alcorn left GW, to go to Syracuse. Ferdinand Boutwell transferred in from Fairfield. 1983-84 Season Preview
GW looks...solid. Here they are, piece by piece (current/potential next to name): Code:
Offense: Obviously, they'll go through Jack. But Woods and Armbruster are capable inside. Davis is streaky but can score both inside and out. Hulett's jumper has gotten better. Patterson, despite being 5'9, is better scoring inside than out. They are not the best ball-handling team, but Hulett has gotten better. Their offensive rebounding may take a hit, but Woods is capable, Jack is Jack, and Sandy is solid at getting after boards. Code:
Defense: Solid on the perimeter. Sandy is a lock-down defender, Davis and Hulett are capable...the bench is horrific, but only has to do it in spurts. 11.14.83: vs VMI (Las Vegas Challenge)
There has not been a tremendous shift, but Southern Cal, Duke, and Nebraska tumbled out of the top ten. Duke's loss to Davidson caused them to fall 18 spots. GW fell to VMI last season, 92-87. The Keydets reached their first NCAA Tournament since 1964-65, when they made an improbable run to the regional final. This team was stripped of three of its starters, and a lot of experience. Four players have bene in the program for three seasons, one for four. Guard Brian Smith is the only real scorer out of the bunch; he has averaged 12.7 points and 3.2 rebounds in 90 games, 61 starts. Last year, he scored 16.9 points a game. Oddly enough, he has not earned an all-conference selection in either his sophomore or junior year, despite solid numbers. The bench is junk. But so it's GW's. If GW doesn't shoot well, they'll lose. Jack hits the first shot of the season. Davis fouls in the first 17 seconds. Old habits die hard. Jack draws a foul from Smith, and sinks both free throws. Smith hits VMI's first poitns, then gets his second foul. Michael Crowley, in his VMI debut, hits a three...Davis responds. Ali commits his fourth foul, and VMI takes a 49-48 lead. Davis attempts to dribble, but cannot. Ramsay takes it and dunks it. And GW is now cold. Woods gets fouled by Baldwin, hits both free throws...Jack gets a couple of blocks, then finds Woods for the lead. Jack hits a bucket after an offensive board, and it's 54-51. Ramsay responds for VMI. Jack has a 25-11-5 line right now. Jack throws it down on a fast break...Armbruster fouls Crowley, but he only gets one of two from the line. Grayson is in again. Jerome Anderson ties it with a three, but Jack hits two free throws. Sandy gets a steal, Jack hits a three. Baldwin responds, but Jack finds Woods for a bucket. It's 63-58. Crowley gets both free throws, and Sandy sinks two at the other end. Grayson gets fouled on a shot, hits one of two for his first collegiate point. Sandy hits a three off a Jack pass, and GW leads 69-60. Jack assists Mulvey on his first points. Grayson scores on a three-point play, and GW has gotten hot...they lead 74-62. Jack hits from the wing. Ramsay responds, but Jack finds Woods for a bucket. He comes out with 6:13 left...Hewett immediately gets a layup. Woods follows with a bucket, but Hewett hits a three. It's 80-69. Davis gets two free throws. Jack is fouled by Brian Smith, who fouls out. The bucket is good, Jack gets the free throw...he is then fouled by Ramsay on the next possession. Armbruster fouls out. Thankfully, GW leads 87-71. Jack completes the triple double by finding Woods, making it 89-71. Jack had himself a game. The scrubs come in with 1:20 left. Crowley hits a three, giving him 17. He's only scored five since that early run. Grayson sinks two free throws...he played well down the stretch. The final is 93-76, and Jack was phenomenal. This may be his best line *ever*: 39 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 5 steals, 5 blocks, 2 turnovers GW controlled the boards, but they also committed 24 fouls (17 for VMI). 11.16.83: vs New Hampshire (1-0)
New Hampshire beat UCLA, 69-62. So, they get the Colonials in the semifinals. They have a middling roster, starting three juniors, a senior, and a sophomore. They have gone 15-15 the psat two years. Four players scored in double figures against UCLA, led by Lee Honigsfeld's 19. Charlie Hilliard scored ten and registered ten rebounds. They only have two starters back from last year's team, Honigsfeld and Elisha McKinley. Outside of that, there is very little experience. Several players have only one game of experience. This should be a runaway for GW. McKinley scores on the first possession. Jack hits a three to start GW...Davis hits one off a Jack pass, and then Armbruster is fed by Jack for a bucket. GW is loving the three, but the three is not loving them back. Jack throws down a dunk off a Hulett miss, making it 10-7 with fifteen minutes left. Sandy hits a three off a Jack pass. He has hand a hand in every basket so far. He gets Davis a bucket, making it 15-9...Davis finally prevents Jack from getting involved by scoring off his own drive. Jack scores...he and Davis have seven each. Jack has a 7-4-4 line with 12 minutes left. Honigsfeld hits a three; he has five. Stephen Robbins hits a shot, getting it to 19-14. Jack charges into McKinley for his first. McKinley hits, but Jack responds by finding Davis. Honigsfeld scores two free throws, but Jack finds Hector. He has a 7-5-6 line with eight minutes left. He also has either three or four blocks. Grayson and Woods come back as Jack gets a breather. Davis has 9...NH gets it back to 23-20 with four minutes left, sending Jack back in. Armbruster shot a three. WHY. Jack shoots one, makes it, then turns to Armbruster and says, "Not anymore." Robby Hill hits two free throws...Davis misses a three, and GW really has to be kicking themselves for their play this half. Jack scores, then suffers his second foul. Jack drills a three to end the half, giving GW a 31-22 lead at the half. Jack has a 15-7-6 line, but the two fouls are reason for concern. GW had eight turnovers. That's no good. NH shot 31% from the field. Charlie Hilliard gets a steal and a layup. McKinley hits, and Jack responds for GW. McKinley hits again. Jack gets a steal, gets it to Hulett, who gets it to Woods for the basket. Jack assists Woods on a basket. He has a 17-7-7 line, and it's 39-32. Armbruster is arguing a car...he'll get T'd if he's not careful. Ref is not going to take any guff from some busher freshman. Davis gets a three-point play...he has 12, and it's 42-32. Moses Neal hits a three. Neal hits another three. It's 42-38. Jack is fouled, and he hits both...with 10:26 left, it's 44-38, GW. Jack gets fouled by Robbins...he makes just one of two. Hilliard hits a jumper, making it 45-40. Jack gets a rebound and feeds Woods for a quick basket. With six minutes left, Jack comes out...Hector hits to make it 49-40. Hulett follows that jumper with a steal and a layup. Grayson gets a block and a rebound...Davis hits a jumper. GW is pulling away...Davis hits a three that'll ice it with 1:45 left. Jack doesn't come back, and that'll do it. Kirby Durrett gets a tip, Sandy gets two free throws..this wasn't a beauty by any stretch, but a win is a win is a win. The polls are still quite volatile, but the top three--Maryland, Missouri, and UTEP--remain intact. Baylor and Penn moved up. Princeton and North Carolina moved down considerably. Texas A&M slipped from 10th to 21st. George Washington showed up in the polls, at #16. Code:
11.21.83: vs Miami-OH (2-0) The Red Hawks are, perhaps, a bit of a surprise in the final. Then again, this wasn't the highest quality of tournaments. The Red Hawks have made the NIT in two of the last three seasons, including last year, when they went 18-13. They have several first-round losses in the NCAA, the last coming in 1975-76. They have some experience, four starters back from a year ago, and six players who have started at least twelve games in their careers. And they divide up the ball well enough, as four players are averaging double-digits. C Toney Whitacre is putting up 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a game. Forward Graham Ulrich is averaging 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, while Randal Mitchum is putting up 10 points, 3.0 boards, and 4.0 assists. And guard Xing Su is averaging 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists...along with a steal and a half. It wasn't the best competition, and GW is a prohibitive favorite...but they'll need to shoot to grab control. Woods scores off an Armbruster stela and pass. And Davis fouls on the next possession. Oh, habits. Mitchum hit a three...Armbruster responded. Jack charged...Mitchum hits another three, and Ulrich scores from the wing. Miami can shoot...Mitchum hits yet another three. Su hits a shot. It's 13-6 with four minutes gone. Ali gets early action and drills a three. Jack has just 0-3-1 so far, with a foul. Jack gets his first points immediately after...timing is key here. Armbruster got hit with a technical. Pretty sure he'll be out for awhile. Jack finds Hulett, but Whitacre follows with an answer. Jack then hits from the baseline, and it's 19-17 with 11:30 left. Davis is fouled by Mitchum...his free throws ties it up. And Mitchum hits his fourth three of the half. Patterson gets a brekaway layup, but Ulrich matches that. The Red Hawks are shooting 64%. Jack takes a seat, and Charlie Anderson drills a three. Hulett follows with a tip-in. With 8:33 left, it's 28-23. Elias Simpson gets a steal and a dunk, and Hulett responds. He has eight. Woods scores off a Hulett pass, and Jack comes back with a 4-5-2 line, and a 30-27 deficit. MItchum hits his fifth three. Jack gets an and-one, getting it to 33-30. Hulett strips Mitchum, but nothing comes of it. Jack missed a free throw...doesn't happen often. Miami leads 35-33 with four minutes left. Jack gets a steal and Davis hits a three, giving GW their first lead. Jack hits a jumper...he has 12-8-2. Rory Bowles hits for Miami-OH, but Jack is fouled, and hits both. Jack gets fouled by Bowles. He has owned him. The score at the half is 42-42...Jack has 16-8-2. Hulett commits his third foul to start the half. Jack hits a jumper to open the scoring. Armbruster is back. Jack finds Woods for a basket...Davis scores; he has nine, Hulett 8, and it's 51-46 with 14:56 left. Armbruster scores, giving him 7-3-1. Jack has 20-9-4. GW has opened up a bit of a lead, as the Red Hawks are slowing down on offense. Armbruster finds Davis. He has a decent passing touch. Jack hits two free throws to give GW a 59-50 lead, then he hits another jumper. Mitchum has just two points in the second half, while Jack is going off. He hits a three, and is owning the rebounds. Elias Sampson gets charged with a technical. Jack ony hits one of two. But the Red Hawks are getting frustrated. Armbruster scores again...he has 11 and is playing efficiently. Jack scores after several chances by GW, making it 71-52. The scrubs come in, and they're still owning things. Now, you don't know this, but I'm in the Berkshires, visiting my parents. And I have to eat dinner, but I'm afraid of things going wonky again after what happened before. So I'm fast-simming. Jack has 32-14-5 as I let things go...it's 79-59, GW. Week 4: 11.28-12.4.83
Maryland held the top spot, offering no question as to why. They beat former #2 Missouri, 89-69. Cornell continued their early season surge, moving up to eighth. Mizzou fell to fifth overall. GW, meanwhile, got bumped a spot. Winning the Las Vegas Challenge is not as prestigious as it was made out to be in the brochure. Code:
12.1.83: vs Hofstra (3-2) The Pride don't have a good win yet, but they do have a winning record. Despite that, they have been outscored overall...mainly due to the 67-42 drubbing they took against Rhode Island. Hofstra does not score, nor do they care to. They also do not intend to let you score. The 58.8 ppg they allow is 11th in the nation. But the 56.0 ppg they score is 226th. They are also a dreadful rebounding team, and a horrible shooting team. They also don't allow teams to shoot well. That is, when watching Hofstra, do not expect elegance, or basketball as an artform, so much as a devastating act of attrition. Only Charlie Pool averages double figures (11.6 ppg). They do have four starters back from a team that reached the NCAA a year ago. They also have coach Cleveland Smith, which is a glorious name for a coach. They start three seniors and two juniors. So they won't flinch at much, even Jack Dawkins. Jack hits a three to open the scoring. Norm Weaver hits a three for Hofstra. Pool picks Davis' pocket for the second time in a minute, and gets on the board. He does it a third time, and Marty Reed wants to eat his hat, if he were wearing one. Two and a half minutes in, it's 7-7. Hulett drains a three, then gets charged with a technical. Argh.... Norm Weaver has seven points, and leads 12-10 after six minutes. Davis is shooting at will. Weaver draws a charge on Jack. Jack has an early 3-3-3 line. GW has nine turnovers not even eight minutes into the game. Jack finds Hector for the basket...if GW finds a way to stop turning it over, they'll run Hofstra out of the building. It's 15-14 with 10:53 left. Jack missed a tough layup. Weaver hits a three, giving him ten. Jack gets fouled...he hits both. 18-16, 9:14 left. Hector scores off a Jack pass, and it's tied. Jack hits from the side, as they get a 20-19 lead. Grayson comes in, fouls, and leaves. Hulett finds Jack...he's up to 9-6-5. Weaver hits again, but Hulett responds. Jack follows that with a score. GW continues to lead as Jack sits. Woods gets a follow to go down...GW hasn't had a turnover in several minutes, and it has been the key. Jack comes back with an 11-6-6 line. Of course, GW just turned it over. And Jack commits his second charge of the game. Jack heads to the line, and gets one of two. At the half, it's 33-28, GW. Jack has a 12-9-6 line, with two fouls. GW controlled the boards, 23-11. Weaver commits his third or fourth foul in the first few seconds of the second half, and comes out. Jack finds Davis for the first bucket, which Andrew Harris answers. Jack hits his first shot. Jack gets a dunk...then gets fouled on a three. He hits all three and has an 19-11-7 line. Harris hits, and it's 44-33. Jack assists Hulett on a three, and is close to another triple-double...19-12.9. Jack gets his third foul with the score 47-38 and 14:01 left. Hector hits...he has six. Jack gets another block...he's up to three or four. He assists Davis on a three, giving him another triple double. Then he dunks off Davis' miss, and then sits down for a breather. Grover Sherman gets a breakaway off a steal, but Sandy responds with a triple. Sherman scores again, and Theodore Lewis steals Sandy. Harris hits, but Sandy responds with a three. 60-46, 10:05 left. Patterson scores, giving him eight. He hits another jumper, making it 64-47. Jack continues to sit as we head to the eight-minute mark. Sherman hits again...I think all eight of his points are in the second half. German Kates hits a shot. This team is chock full of great names. Armbruster hits a three. So, that's a thing. Jack's not going to return to this game...I hope he's not hurt. Oh, wait. There he is. Probably in for a moment. He hasg four fouls...he assists Hulett, then comes out. GW wins this one, 76-61. The big takeaway from this game is Sandy's five steals. When he has his head on straight, he can get a lot of steals. Jack shot 7-10, 6-7 from the line, and had another triple-double. 12.3.83: at North Carolina State Here comes an education. The Wolfpack's only loss was to UTEP. They beat Kentucky (granted, unranked Kentucky) 93-57. None of their wins have been by less than 13 points. The are two years removed from a miracle run to the NCAA Championship. This year's squad is their least experienced in years, with just one starter returned from last season. There are several reserves stepping up, and that returning starter, guard Charles Smith, is averaging 19.2 points a game. Point man Regis Devreney is scoring 15.7 a game. GW will have their hands full, and then some. This is likely where they fall...maybe the only game on the slate where they are a decided underdog. Jack assists Davis on the first basket of the game. Joe Simmons scores State's first points. Hulett gets a bucket, and Devreney hits a three. Smith throws down a dunk..GW beats the press, ending in a Hulett bucket. Jack gets fouled by Simmons, and hits both free throws for his first points. Jack sets an illegal screen for his first foul. With fifteen minutes left, it's 16-10, NC State. Jack gets two straight block, and Sandy drills a three off a Jack pass. Jack gets another block, and then gets the ball to Davis for another bucket. Devreney answers with a foul. Simmons commits his second foul, and comes out. His replacement, Chris Fleetwood, drills a three. Jack answers. Jack hits from the corner...it's 22-19 with ten minutes left. Jack hits from the left baseline. He comes out and NC State scores. Grayson hits from the baseline for his first points. It's 24-23, and Jack comes back. Simmons comes back and gets his third foul. That's big. Davis beats the press and gives GW their first lead. Devreney takes it back, and Fleetwood adds a layup. Hulett beats the press and scores. Jack has an 8-5-3 line right now...8-5-4, after he finds Hulett. Then he finds Sandy, and it's 32-29. Jose Sokol ties it with a deep three. Blake Gonzalez hits a three. Armbruster finishes a bucket, then gets a pass from Jack and scores. Jack finds Hulett, and GW has a 38-35 lead. He commits his second foul and comes out with two minutes left. Devreney (11) hits a three, cutting GW's lead to one. Jack comes back, and finds Davis for the bucket. That's his eighth assist of the half. Newberry hits at the end of the half, making it GW 43, NC State 40. Jack's line: 8-6-8. Those eight assists are astounding. Devreney lead the Wolfpack with 11. Devreney scores to start the second half. Hulett beats the press...Jack is a bit cold to start the half, missing his first two shots. John Mota dunks to tie it. Ferris takes the lead...Hulett ties it. Mota gives them the lead back. Jack scores, tying it back up. Woods has drawn four charges this game. And Simmons gets his fourth foul. Devreney skies for a dunk, then gets a steal...Smith hits a three, and it's 54-49. Sandy scores...Jack commits a foul on Newberry, who finishes the shot. That's three on Jack. NC State goes up 58-51, and Jack scores. Smith dunks on Armbruster, who commits a foul. NC State is separating themselves. With 14 minutes left, it's a ten-point game. Jack finds Hulett for a bucket. Smith hits a three. I'm not sure State has missed this half. Jack draws a foul on Mota, goes 1-2 from the line. Jack finds Hulett, doesn't get the assist. He scores, and it's back to 69-60...but Devreney (23) hits another three. It's 72-61. Jack commits his fourth foul. Gonna guess they won't come back from that. Jack had a 15-10-9 line. Ali is fouled, hits one of two. GW has to shoot better from the line...but State keeps scoring. They're shooting 62%. Another three, and a steal, and a dunk by Fleetwood. Jack hs to come back now. It's 83-63. Hulett throws down a three...he has 21, but Denis Veliz hits a three. Ferris scores. Seriously, I've never seen a team shoot this well. Ferris scores again. It's 90-70. Jack has not come back...not sure if he will now. Oh, there he is. He scores upon coming back...it's 92-76. Jack finds Woods, and there's a triple-double. Fleetwood answers with a three. This is amazing. Jack finds Armbruster, and Mota hits a three. Hulett hits two free throws...he has 25. Smith dribbs around, and hits a shot. 100-82. Hulett hits two more. Holy cow, they missed! The game is over...103-86. NC State shot 65%. GW shot 59%...but State shot 65% from 3. GW just 25%. What an unreal shooting performance. NC State was 15-23 from 3, 39-60 from the field. Baylor lost at surprisingly unranked Kansas State, and fell from #2 to #10. And Southern Cal fell from #6 down to #19 after falling to Pepperdine. Maryland is still the tops in thenation. Cornell, Yale, and Prnceton are all in teh top ten. North Carolina State moved into the top 25, in part at the expense of George Washington. Marty Reed's record as coach is now 32-4. 12.5.83: at Niagara (2-4) The Purple Eagles have just one player worth mentioning, forward Charles Etienne. He is averaging 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. They struggle tremendously with scoring (203rd), and rebounding (158th). They are a dreadful shooting team, especially from long-range (232nd out of 234).They have lost to rubbish teams. Expect a convincing bounceback by GW. Jack gets a steal, then and an-one on the game's first possession. Armbruster fouls Etienne, who misses both free throws. Hulett hits. 12.9.83: at St. Francis (PA) (2-6) The Red Flash are 2-6, having just beaten winless Louisville (how bad are they?). It came at a cost, as leading scorer Ben Wright (18.4 ppg) is out for this game. He is their leading rebounder, too. It wouldn't really help in this one. The Red Flash are young, inexperienced, and due for an education. They'll look to redshirt senior C, Thomas Philpot, for the bulk of the offense, along with junior guard Robert Gage (26 vs Louisville). Hector or Sandy will start in the place of Hulett. Gage hits a jumper to open the shooting. Philpot hits one, and Woods scores off a Jack pass to open GW's scoring. Patterson, who got the start, hits, tying the score at six. Jack has a rare turnover...Hector scores off a tip to give GW the lead. Jack scores his first points, and it's 10-6 with three minutes gone. Jack gets fouled, and hits both freebies. 12.11.83: at Manhattan (4-6) The Jaspers are on a three-game slide, having been demolished at BYU (87-40) and at UNC (87-65). They had to replace all five starters from a year ago, so this is a team very much in transition. They have been a postseason team in each of the last three years, and reached the second round of the NIT a year ago. Daniel Eddy (12.4 ppg) and forward Marcel Williams (11.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.2 apg) lead the offense. Williams has, far and away, the most experience in the program...he has played in 74 games. This group has ten freshmen...three are redshirting. Evan Mauney had an aspicious start...traveling and then commiting a foul. Grayson, getting the start, scores to open things. William drills a three to give Manhattan the early lead. Jack finds Armbruster. Hulett, who is back for this game, misses his first two chances. Armbruster scores, and Hulett fouls Williams. He should get a quick hook. Williams ties the game on a tip. With 14:15 left, it's 8-8. Jack nails a three for his first points. He's at 3-2-1 seven minutes in. Hulett gets a layup, making it 29-26. Ken Cate hits a three at the end of the half, making it a 30-29 GW lead. That was abysmal. Jack had a 7-7-3 line, and Davis led with ten points. Mauney has a better start to this half, scoring a layup. Armbruster gives GW the lead back. He is becoming a solid force around the post. Jack misses his first shot. Hulett commits his third foul. Jack gets on the board by moving inside. He finds Armbruster for a score. Mauney draws a charge on Davis...Davis immediately gets his third and comes out. Jack finishes around the hoop. He has 11-10-4, and it's 38-35. The kids are all right for Manhattan so far. Jack throws down a dunk, and the kids look at him in awe. Williams reminds them it's a game, hitting a three to get back to within two. Ian Audley ties it. Jack is fouled, hitting both to give GW the lead back. Armbruster just got charged with a technical, and Manhattan ties it. Sandy throws down a dunk and then gets hit with a technical for taunting. Manhattan ties it again. Jeez. Jack scores, getting it to 46-43. Armbruster gets a steal and a layup. Here's Ali, which means he's going to shoot soon. Sure enough, first possession, he tosses one up. Mulvey hits a three to reak a tie. Woods comes in and has a second foul. Manhattan hits two free throws to take a 52-51 lead...Jack takes the lead right back, but Roman Jack scores again. Jack goes to the line, and goes 1-2 to tie it with 6:21 left. Manhattan scores again. Hulett commits his fourth foul. Patterson comes in...he hasn't done anything in this game. Jack scores a three, and Grayson gives GW the lead back. They're in a real dogfight. Jack throws down a dunk. 61-58 GW. Sperling with a steal and a layup. Kate gives Manhattan the lead. It's 62-61, Manhattan. Jack finds Armbruster and GW gets the lead back. Eddy scores, and Jack answers. Jack goes to the line, and hits both...he then comes out for a quick breather. GW leads, 67-65. Hulett goes to the line. He hits both. 69-65. Jack has a 29-11-5 line. Grayson hits two free throws, and the subs come in. Roman Jack scores...but they can't get closer. Hulett hits one of two free throws. Sandy goes to the line...he hits both. Eddy hits a three. Hulett goes to the line, hits both. It's 77-70 with 1:05 left. Jack goes to the line as Williams fouls out. Jack hits both. GW escapes, 80-70. Jack finished with a 31-11-5 line, though it was a chore to get there. Week 6: 12.12-18.83
The top four of Maryland (9-0), BYU (8-0), Cornell (8-0) and Missouri (7-1) remain intact. The only tumbles week were Texas A&M (9th to 14th) and Nebraska (7th to 18th). TCU (8-0) surged into the top ten, moving from 11th to 7th. George Washington (7-1) is the top team not in the poll. Code:
12.14.83: vs Fairfield (6-5) A conflict of interest for me, as I did my grad work at Fairfield. They have beaten just one team with a winning record, that being 6-3 Delaware State. They are coming off a 66-55 loss to Cal. They play staunch defense, but are dreadful on offense, offensive rebounding and assists. They are also a horrific three-point shooting team. They are experienced, with four starters returning from a year ago. Their leading scorer, forward Corey Scott (11.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg), is nicked up. He will play, but his effectiveness is in question. Millard Lee opens the game with a free throw. Jack finds Hulett for GW's first score. Scott scores; Jack responds by finding Armbruster for three. Scott hits again, and a GW turnover leads to a dunk. With 15:03 left, it is 10-8, Fairfield. Davis hits a three to give Fairfield the lead. Davis has six early points. Jack finds Armbruster, but Fairfield is staying with GW so far, perhaps because Jack has only taken two shots so far. GW is shooting just 40% after Sandy's three. With ten minutes left, it's 18-18. Davis scores off a drive, giving GW the lead. Jack's line: 2-4-3, and he just got his first foul. Hector gets a steal and a layup. Gerald Annis counters with a three. This is unsustainable...GWs second-half tendencies should make this a blowout earlier than later. Jack scores to open the half; it is GW's first double-digit lead. Jack hits a three...Millard Lee opens Fairfield's scoring. Jack scores again, giving him 18-7-5 so far. He is inflicting his will upon Fairfield, and they are bending. Joe Dunston hits a three, getting Fairfield back to 11 (47-36). Fairfield is blocking some shots. Davis drills a three..Jack draws a foul by Lee, and hits both free throws. His line: 20-9-5. Armbruster fouls Neal Clemens, who scores. It's 52-44. Woods comes in and fouls and leaves. That's what he does. Man, Fairfield is up to eight blocks. Jack blocks one of his own. Jacka ssists Ali, but Corey Scott answers. Fairfield has not gone away...that is to their credit. With 6:25 left, it's 56-47. Jack gets a steal and a dunk on the other end...then another steal, which leads to a Grayson dunk. Jack finds Sandy for a basket, and the lead is 62-47. Jack just gave up a three-point and-one...but the free throw did not go. Armbruster fouls out with 3:50 left. And Fairfield's press is working, as they get a steal. With 2:59 left, it's 62-54. Jack finds Porter Ali for the bucket, but Corey Scott (18 points) is keeping Fairfield alive. He scores again...it's 64-58. Make that 64-61. Sandy missed a free throw, and they hit a three. Jack finds Davis for a bucket, and that should do it...67-61 is the final. Jack barely missed a triple-double (22-13-9), but he made key plays when necessary. Fairfield had a great run at the end, but they couldn't get the final one to drop. Code:
12.17.83: at St. John's (3-5) This might be the youngest team Fairfield has faced thus far. Or the worst. The Johnnies start four sophomores and a senior. Two years ago, they went 25-9 and reached the NCAA. They were a kingpin in the first year of the NCAA, winning their first thirty-four games before falling in the Final Four. They were a tough out for the first fifteen or so years, but have fallen on tough times, as the nexus of the game spread west. This year's team plays tough defense, but cannot score or rebound. Or keep others from rebounding. It will be an ugly affair in a series of them. Point man John Parton is the leader on offense, averaging 11.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists (against 2.5 turnovers). GW should outclass this group, but it is on the road. Woods and Hulett are fully healthy and in the starting lineup. Armbruster gets blocked by Parton on a dunk attempt, sending the NYC crowd into an early rapture. Many are there to see Jack...he gets an assist, and a foul, early on. He also misses his first two shots. Woods has two early fouls and sits. GW has five fouls in the first three minutes. Jack scores to tie it at four. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass, and he's beginning to clean up every shot on the defensive end. Sandy scores, and it's 9-4 with 14:34 left. Steven Callan throws home a dunk, which Sandy responds to with one of his own. Armbruster gets his second foul. Grayson replaces him, but St. John's has pulled to within one. Fouls are usually home-cooking, but it's 8-0 GW with 12:33 left. Jack assists Davis on a three His line: 2-5-3 so far. Hulett gets his second foul...St. John's takes a 15-14 lead midway through the first half. GW is shooting 31%, St. John's 22%. But St. John's has a 19-14 lead, becuase of free throws and turnovers. Patterson and Porter Ali come back to tie it, but St. John's gets a four-point play. This foul situation is absurd. Jack gets his second...everyone in the game has two fouls right now. If I'm Marty Reed, I probably force a technical to get my poit across. This is really bad home cooking. Woods is called for an illegal screen. GW hasn't scored in five miutes. St. John's opens up a 28-19 lead. Grayson commits a foul...that's 16 for GW. Jack finally breaks the drought by finding Sandy. St. John's commits their third foul with 1:45 left. Jeez. Jack hits, getting it to 30-23...then he finds Sandy. Hulett gets his seventh foul. Davis is fouled, hits both, and it's 31-27 at the half. Seventeen fouls by GW. No blocks. St. John's outrebounded them, 20-14. That is, quite likely, the worst half played by GW this season. Jack's line: 4-8-5. Hulett opens up the half with a three. Jack finds Hulett for a basket, and GW takes a 32-31 lead. Correa draws a charge on Davis, his third. Jack assists Davis on a three...he begins his idiot taunting show. Jack hits a three, giving him a 7-11-7 line. Correa hits, but Jack answers. 40-35, fifteen minutes left. GW (Jack) goes cold, but St. John's cannot score...Hulett gets his fourth foul and sits. Leslie Collins hits a three, giving St. John's the lead back. Sandy is fouled by Collins, and hits two at the line to get the lead for GW. He adds a three, making it 45-41 with ten minutes left. St. John's has six blocks. Jack scores from the baseline. He is up to 11-12-7. With 5:35 left, it's 47-71, GW. Nobody is shooting well right now. Hulett and Woods (4 fouls) are in the game. Hulett scores...Sandy is GW's leading scorer with 13. Woods fouls out with 3:45 left. Hulett hits another three, and it's 52-43. Efrain Stamp responds for the Johnnies. Jack finds Davis. St. John's is putting GW at the line. Davis hits two. Parton called for traveling. Palmieri hits a three, and then fouls out. Davis keeps getting fouled...he has missed two in a row. 57-50 with a minute left. GW will hold on...Jack will be held to his lowest total ever, just 11 points, in a 58-50 victory. Week 7: 12.19-25.83
As we head towards a Sunday Christmas (making it an extra Jesus year), the top four teams stay atop the list...but Cornell and BYU flip-flopped, sending Big Red to #2. This is a school that has reached three Elite Eights and two Final Fours in the last ten seasons, and a streak of eleven straight NCAA appearances. They have been ascending (85 prestige)...this may be their year. Of course, that superclass Maryland scored a few years back, in which four players are now starting seniors for the unanimous top-ranked team, may be the stopper for Cornell...or anyone else. Clemson fell from sixth to nineteenth after losing at home to 7-2 Columbia. That's a fair loss. An inexplicable loss is former #9 Yale falling to Lafayette, 81-58, at home. The Leopards are a shell of their past, with only senior Cam Null and junior 80s hipster, Brady Cory, leading the way. Don't you get the feeling that Brady Cory could have been the star player for Valley in Saved By The Bell? Or he could have been Ricky Shroeder's friend in Silver Spoons? Yeah, he's a jerk. George Washington has gotten back into the poll, at #23. They are the only new team in the poll this week. And with Jack looking to avenge his worst game as a collegiate player...GW should be dangerous this week. Code:
12.20.83: vs Georgetown (3-6) If I'm Georgetown, I'm angry at St. John's. The Johnnies played very well to hold Jack and GW down. And now the Hoyas have to travel across town and face an irritated, and focused, Colonials team. The Hoyas, who reached their second-straight NCAA tournament a year ago (thank you, Big East), return three starters. The stars of the team are its backcourt, guards James Hermann (13.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Charlie Rhoads (12.8 ppg). They are also dreadfully inefficient. Elvin Mitchell and Nathan Long played against GW last night...Mitchell had a decent game. He's averaging 7.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. That won't be enough. This Hoyas team is in a lot of trouble. Davis gets a three-point play (Jack should have gotten an assist), then Jack finds Armbruster for a score. Davis gets a three off a Jack pass, and it's 8-0 in two minutes. Davis gets a steal and a dunk. Jack misses a dunk...so far, hes got two assists and two steals...now three assists. It's 14-0 with 14:42 left. Jack still has no points with 12 minutes to go...neither does Georgetown. They finally get on the board with 11:49 left. Jack scores from the free throw line, making it 16-2. Sandy gets a steal and a dunk. Jose Holder scores for Georgetown, then coaxes a charge out of Armbruster. He makes up for it with a steal and a dunk. Jack throws down a dunk. 22-4, 9:39 left. Armbruster hits a three...he has nine. In Jack's senior year, Armbruster should be an excellent second option. Jack scores, making it 27-6 with 8:27 left. Rhoads hits two free throws, but Hulett answers. Rhoads hits a three, and Georgetown is beginning to roll. GW has struggled since Georgetown woke up, as they have eight turnovers. Hermann gets a steal and a layup. GT gets it to 36-26, as Jack finds Hulett for a score. Hulett gets his second foul and then tosses it into the stands. GW, which led 22-4 and 27-6, is up 38-28 at the half. Not the best way to end. Jack finished 8-4-4...Hermann has 12 for Georgetown. Jack throws down a dunk to start the second half. Rhoades beats GW's press, and throws down a dunk of his own. Jack gets a steal, and gets Davis a three. Hulett and Davis both have three fouls. Armbruster hits a three off a Jack pass. Jack then commits his first foul. GW leads 48-30, and the Hoyas call time. Jack assists Davis on another score; Davis has 17. Rhoades hits a three, and Jack answers with a jumper of his own. With 13:39, Jack comes out, GW up 52-37. Jack comes back and assists Davis. He has a 12-8-8 line, and with 12:21 left, its 55-39. GW is doing stupid things with the ball, throwing bad passes all over the place. GT gets it back to 55-43, but Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. It's interesting, with Armbruster and Davis hitting, Jack doesn't have to score as much. He has a 12-8-10 line. He's also not shooting well. Hermann hits a three, and Jack responds. Porter Ali comes in and just tosses it away. Joe Louque hits a three. Jack responds...Rhoades hits a three. Down to nine, 65-59, with 5:40 left. Jack goes for a funk, but he's fouled...he gets only one of two. He does have another triple double though. And now he gets fouled, and hits the and-one...up to 20-10-10. Nathan Long responds with a three...back to ten, 4:03 left. Elvin Mitchell scores...Hector responds. Jack comes out at the three-minute mark. It's 71-61...gets a 30 second breather and comes back. Jack misses a three. Woods draws a charge...Hermann fouls out on Davis, but Davis missed both free throws. Armbruster has his first double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds), as GW holds on, 71-61. Their second half play, which had been their hallmark, seems to be deteriorating. Jack is also in a shooting slump. He shot 8-17 (0-3 3pt), with the 10 boards and 10 assists...no turnovers...4 steals and 2 bocks. A good game, but not what Jack had been putting up. I guess I'm spoiled. Code:
12.23.83: vs East Carolina (4-7) GW ends their run before Christmas with a game against the Pirates, who just upset #12 Wake Forest on the road. They are in the midst of four straight games against four ranked opponents. After this, they'll go to Duke and NC State next week. They started the year with five straight losses to nobody in particular. In fact, other than the Wake upset, they hadn't beaten anyone in particular. But, in spite of the record, they have outscored their opponents. They score and rebound reasonably, achiving top-quarter status nationally. They foul a lot, and get fouled a lot. They don't shoot all that well. And they're 2-6 against teams not in the top 100. But, here we are. The Pirates have just one senior, Matthew Pruitt, and he's hurt. These kids were freshmen when they lost to GW in the first-round of the NCAA tournament two years ago. A lot of them have never seen GW in person. They're about to. David Ebner (14.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg) has blossomed into a nice player, while Nicolas Lindgren (12.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 3.3 apg) has been a jack-of-all-trades. Of course, with Pruitt (and reserve Rob Milligan) banged up, they are not fighting with a full roster. Bruce Woods, a forgotten man in the offense, scores to open the game. Ebner responds for ECU. Davis hits off an Armbruster pass. Jack scores on his first shot. Nicolas Lindgren scores, and ECU is keeping up for now. Lindgren ties it at 8-8 with 17:05 left. Jack suffers his first foul. Armbruster fouls Ebner, but he misses both. Jack finds Hulett for his first assist. Jack is very quiet so far, going 2-0-1 in the first eight minutes. Its 13-10. It's like when LeBron takes off for three quarters of a game. Michael Lingenfelter hits a three, which Jack responds by finding Davis (9 points). Jack can't get going so far...ten minutes left, he has 2-1-2, with three missed shots that Ive seen. Rob Milligan is fouled by Grayson, as Jack comes out for Hulett, who has two fouls. It's 21-17 with seven minutes left. Dick Bloomfield hits a three, and Lingenfelter gives GW a 22-21 lead with six minutes left. Grayson goes to the line, goes 1-2, but Sandy taps in the rebound. Jack gets a steal and a dunk. Jack with another steal, and a layup. Hes up to 6-2-2. Cluff responds, and Davis responds with a three. Jack finds Woods for a bucket, then gets another steal. Jack gets Armbruster a score. It's 37-28. Hector beats the press and finds Sandy, and then gets a steal and a layup. He has 7-4-1, and its 42-29 at the half. Not the best line for Jack (6-2-4), but oh well. Jack commits his second foul immediately. Jack then gets fouled, and hits both free throws. Jack hits a three, and he's up to 11. Jack gets Armbruster a bucket. Armbruster gets a steal and hits a shot, making it 53-34. Jack commits his third foul on a three. Yeesh...Jack taking a lot of chances that are not working. Jack, of course, gets a steal, and hits Ali for a three. Jack gets an and-one, and he's up to 14-4-6, and the lead is up to 59-39. Ebner responds for ECU. The final week of 1983 sees Maryland still atop the polls. BYU and Cornell flip-flopped. Only Missouri fell hard within the top-ten, going to 9th from 4th. Princeton and Rice round out the top five. George Washington moved up to 18th. Code:
12.28.83: at La Salle (6-5) The yearly matchup with La Salle finds the Explorers struggling a year after reaching the Elite Eight as a 7-seed. They have a new/old coach. Bradley Seabolt was the recruiting coordinator under Luther Augustin. When Augustin left to take over at Purdue, he took his staff with him...except Seabolt, who took over the reigns at La Salle. Unfortunately, he was left with an inexperienced roster. Only one starter, Kyle Packard, remained. Packard is tied for seventh in school history in points scored, with 1643. Old teammate Royal Swinton was passed last week; he finished with 1615. And Carey Smith, Swinton's backcourtmate, finished 10th with 1495. Packard's 17.1 points lead the Explorers. Guard Gayle Tinker, a reserve until this year, is averaging 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds. One thing all five members of the starting group do...they rebound, primarily offensively. They are 107th in rebounds, but 59th in offensive rebounds. They are bad at scoring, and give up more than they score. This team really doesn't stand out. But, lately, neither has George Washington. And La Salle has some revenge on its mind, after last year's loss. This won't be a cakewalk. Jack opens things with a block of Packard. Davis gets an and-one to open GW's scoring (he missed the layup). Tinker hits a three to open things up for La Salle. Then he hits another. Gholston picks Jack's pocket, and Packard hits. Jack has 17-6-2 at the half. That's a better half for him than recent games. Rayborn hits a layup to start the scoring. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass to start GW. Rayborn hits again, and Jack gets a steal, but Hulett wants a fan to have a souvenier. Jack gets his first foul, then gets a steal...Jack finds Hulett for the bucket. Woods fouls Rayborn. Armbruster hits a three off a Jack pass. Why he shoots the three, I don't know. But he does. Jack has a 17-6-5 line at the moment. Gholston gets it to 46-40 with a three. Jack commits his second foul. Hulett commits a couple of fouls. GW has five fouls in the first six minutes. Patterson comes in and, he, too, thinks a fan should have a souvenier. Packard with a steal...Woods fouls out, and Gholston goes to the line. There's 4:26 left. It's 68-61, GW. Armbruster has fouled out now. Davis is called for a foul. Hulett has four, Davis three. Ali has to shoot threes. Hulett fouls out. It's 68-65 with 2:13 left, and GW is running out of players. Davis gets an and-one! He hits, and its 71-65, 1:36 left. Davis goes to the line...he hits both. He and Jack have 24 each. Tinker shoots a three, misses, and Davis goes back to the line. He hits both. Back to ten with a minute left. Ellis Johnson scores, but Jack finds Grayson for a basket. Davis goes to the line again...he makes both. Jack won't get his triple-double, but he'll take the win. GW outscores La Salle 11-2 in the final 3:30, and pulls away for the 79-67 win. The Explorers played great, but didn't do well on rebounds (35-25, GW) or assists (21-12, GW), or blocks (9-2, GW). 12.31.83: at Jacksonville (7-4) Not sure if it's fitting that the Jack All-Stars...well, they're a lot more than that now...are in Jacksonville to finish the year. In another dynasty, Jacksonville won the most improbable national title I've ever seen, coming in as an 8-seed in a 32-team NCAA Tournament to run the table. They are 8-3 this year, though they have feasted on the week. The records of the teams they beat? 23-66. That doesn't mean they are a bad team. Last year's squad reached the postseason (NIT) for the first time since 1957-58. They were a good program early, reaching the NCAA in 1950-51 (24-6), and went 25-7 the following year. But they have been a .500 team, for the most part, ever since. The Dolphins are experienced, with several players having multiple seasons in the program. They start four seniors and a sophomore. They also have a 7'3 center, Kenneth Lenoir, coming off the bench (he's not good). They have an offense that goes through three players: guard Joe Sorensen (15.6 ppg), C Andreas Taylor (15.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and forward Larry Rodriguez (12.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.5 apg). They are good at keeping opponents off the boards...but opponents are good at shooting against them (209th in oFG%). The 53.7% adjusted FG% is 223rd out of 234 teams. So, there will be points available. Davis has the ritual opening foul. Then he comes back for an encore. Sandy comes in right away. Jack goes to the line and scores GW's first points. Armbruster missed a layup, but tipped in his miss. Jack with a steal...then tips in Armbruster's miss. Armbruster scores. Woods has three assists. Jack finds Woods, rewarding him for those assists. Its 37-20 with 2:32 left. Jack hits from the left corner, giving Woods his fourth assist. Davis gets a breakway layup. Jack has a double-double in the first half (15-10-3), and it's 43-20. Woods draws a charge on Taylor! Jack hits two free throws, and the Dolphins have been throughly drilled in this first half. Jack has 17-10-3, and it's 45-20. The Dolphins had just three assists in the first half, and shot 26%. GW shot 58%, despite going 1-8 from 3. You'd think Marty Reed would do something about this. Sorensen opens the scoring, and Jack answers. Davis finds Jack, who now has 21. Jack with a block. Jack hits a three, and it's 52-22. Jack has 24-11-3. Jack finds Armbruster for a bucket. Figured the Dolphins were a bit of a champion among the poor, but this is ridiculous. With 12:36, it's 62-27. The crowd has begun chanting for GW. You know, the crowd in Jacksonville on New Year's Eve in 1983. Armbruster hits a three. He has 13. Lenoir is in...he has three points and three boards. Jack is fouled by Larry Rodriguez. Jack hits two free throws at the end, and the game ends, 84-43. For the game, Jack was 13-13 from the line, with 15 boards and eight assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks. He also had four turnovers. Maryland fell to Lafayette, 82-78, but is *still* the unanimous #1 team in the nation. BYU and Cornell, still undefeated, are 2nd and 3rd. Princeton fell to 11th from 4th after falling to new #4 Baylor. Why they were punished that much, I don't know. Clemson moved back into the poll, as did old history, New Mexico. They are 20th and 24th, respectively. George Wasighngton, meanwhile, is 16th, one point ahead of Penn. That is a two-spot rise on the week. Code:
1.2.84: vs Army (8-6) The Black Knights have a good team. And they are young. Only one senior on it. Watch for them next year...they have top-25 written all over them. They are also experienced. All five starters from last year returned. They start G/G, G/G, Y/G, Y/G, G/G, and bring Y/B and O/G off the bench. That said, they have been outscored...barely, this season. They score 70.6 a game, give up 70.7. And leading scorer, C Monte Breshanan (14.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg) is nicked up. Justin Abell (10.7), Claude Wilson (9.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg), Saul Dicarlo (9.4, 5.3) and David Brown (8.9) round up a balanced scoring output. They are not good at rebounding, which is where GW can exploit them. They also allow teams to shoot well...the 51.6% adjusted FG% is 202nd in the nation. They are pretty mediocre all over the stat sheet, but they have a winning record (including wins over 9-4 Rider, and 9-3 Delaware). So, they are not to be trifled with. How do you trifle with someone, anyway? Armbruster opens the game with a bucket. Woods fouls Breshanan...Justin Abell finds Claude Wilson for a bucket. Jack has two shots blocked on one possession. 1.4.83: at West Chester (4-9) Ah, West Chester. In the first go-round of this dynasty, back before it was a dynasty, Jack went to my old PSAC rival (I went to Bloomsburg University for undergrad). Jack led the Rams to a NCAA championship his senior year. The Rams are like they are now, pre-Jack...an awful team. Actually, this version is better. The Rams had never made the postseason before Jack arrived. This group has made the NIT three times...the last in 1971-72, when they went 26-10. This group is built on promise, and only a bit of experience. Four starters returned from last year's atrocious team. Only C Riley Love averages in double-figures, at 13.8 a game. Forward Rob Dale averages 9.1 points and 6.4 rebounds...he might be their most well-rounded player. Their only drubbing of a win was against St. John's. They do keep their losses relatively close. They did lose 83-53 to 4-6 Pitt, and 86-66 to Long Island, but everything else has been respectable. Hulett scores off a Jack pass to start things. Elgin fouls Jack, who hits both freebies. Jack then blocks Charley Miller (I thought it was Cheryl Miller at first). Davis gets T'd up after a three. Good Lord. Hulett hits a three off a Davis assist. Bothers me that he's in. Davis commits his second foula nd sits. Albert Pastor throws one down. Jack isn't looking for his shot at the moment, and is not part of the offense. Mulvey scores after GW breaks WCUs press, and Jack comes right back. Larry Biggie Smalls hits one free throw. Henry Riddle hits a three, and it's 21-13. Jack hits two free throws, then tips in Armbruster's missed tip. Jack gets another steal, but misses the jumper. Elgin hits on the other end. With 8:16 left, Dale hits a three, getting it to 26-18. Armbruster misses both free throws, and Jack gets fouled. He hits just one of two, missing his one for the month. Jack finds Woods for a bucket, making it 29-20. Elgin scores, and Grayson gets called for an illegal screen. WCU is shooting 60%...Jack finds Woods for a basket, but WCU keeps coming on. It's 31-26 with 4:50 left. Love scores, cutting it to 31-28. Jack gets fouled...he hits both. He has 11-3-4. Sandy tips one in. Tommie Camp throws it down. Love scores again...35-32 with three minutes left. Love scores again...he has eight. Jack is fouled by Camp. He hits both...the only one who is scoring. Sandy fouls, but Riddle misses. Hulett goes to the line, and hits both. Dale hits a three, getting it back to 39-37...but Sandy rumbles one home. Jack then scores, making it 44-37. Armbruster gets fouled, hitting both free throws. At the half, that's how it ends. WCU had ten turnovers, but good too many good looks. They shot 65%, for crying out loud. Jack had a 15-4-4 line, and starts the half at the point. Davis opens things with a three. Hulett gives WCU a three-point play...but Jack gets a dunk. Love hits again...he's got ten. Jack gets a block and a board. They need to disrupt WCU somehow. Jack has gone a little cold, missing his last few. Camp hits two free throws, but Jack finds Hulett for a bucket. Camp scores again...53-49, 15 minutes left. Jack answers, but gets called for his first foul. Davis tips in an Armbruster miss. Hulett fouls again. GW has a shot clock violation, and Armbruster commits his third foul. Hulett bails out a trap with a foul. Ugh. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. He's up to 19-7-6, and Hulett has 14. Biggie Smalls hits, but Jack answers. Ali fouls Dale, who hits both. Its 62-55 with 11 minutes left. Jack misses an easy layup...Charley Miller gets it back to five. GW has seven fouls, WCU only two. Scott Dowell scores, getting it back to five, but Patterson answers. Harold Helman scores. Hulett answers with a three, then fouls again. Jack comes back, with a Michael King sighting...it's only his fourth game this year. Jack finds Ali for a three, then makes one on his own. The lead is up to 73-65. Woods hits two free throws, and Armbruster commits his fourth foul. Jack scores inside. WCU really has no answer for him. Then again, not many do. He's up to 26-10-7. Both teams go stagnant, which helps GW, as time is ticking. Jack finds Davis for a three. Then Jack scores from the top of the key. It's 82-68. Love hits two free throws. Armbruster scores off a Jack miss. Pastor hits a three, and Jack responds by finding Hulett. Pastro hits again. Jack finds Hulett for another bucket, getting a triple-double. The final is 88-76 and, I swear, Marty Reed is hellbent on getting Jack triple-doubles. He did it here, but he kept him in late again. 1.8.84: vs Howard (4-10) The muckity muck continues. Howard has a 7-0 center in Darwin Brune, but he, nor any of his teammates, do anything to stop any offense from happening to them. They also don't do a whole lot to score, where they are middle of the pick. They also foul a lot (217th). The only top-50 team they beat is 6-9 Rutgers. Honestly, I don't want to touch too much on them. Pete Geiger, their leading scorer, will play, but is not 100%. Davis hits a three to open the scoring. Jack hits his first shot, and Davis gets his first foul. Arthur Smith hits a three for Howard. Jack is folled by JC Steinke, and hits both freebies. Howard ties it with sixteen minutes left, at 7-7. Hulett hits a three to break the scoring drought. Jack hits from the inside. Sandy gets a steal and a dunk. Geiger hits a three to get it back to 14-10. Armbruster is fouled, and he hits both. Good form, Brian. Geiger hits, then fouls and gets charged with a T. Jack hits the freebies. Its 18-15 after Smith hits another three. Herman Pickett gets it back to within one. Jack finds Armbruster for a bucket. Jack gets an and-one, giving him an 11-2-1 line. Its 23-19 as Tommy Robles hits, but Davis counters with a three. Nothing happened over the next several minutes. Maryland, BYU and Cornell remained atop the polls. The rest of the top ten shifted; Missouri moved back up to #4, while Baylor slid from 4 to 7. George Washington stayed at #16, which makes sense. Code:
1.11.84: @ American (5-9) Hey Ralph Ham! American returns four starters, including Ralph Ham, but lost all-time leading scorer, Wade Paulsen, to graduation. They have failed to replace him. Three scorers average double-digits, led by Ham's 11.6. Trevor McHugh and Williams Carter average 10.1 per game. But the team has severe trouble scoring, issues rebounding, and no trouble in letting team score. Jack opens it with a little bit of everything...steal, rebound, assist. Then a foul. Then a score, with 16:19 left. Jack gets a steal and a layup. Williams Carter hits a jumper...Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. Mulvey hits a three, making it 16-6 with ten minutes left. 1.13.84: vs Detroit (6-7) The Titans have one of the best team nicknames, and one of the best point guards, in the nation. Tracey Vaughn (B/B) is averaging 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 7.2 assists a game. Vaughn is closing in on a thousand points 941), and the school record for career assists (567; the record is 615). He doesn't have a lot of help. C Carl Hargrove is supposedly the best player after him, and he's averaging 8.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. The team's leading scorer, Roy Session, averages 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. They are a solid rebounding team, and very good at distributing the ball (seventh in the nation). They are also third in the nation in field goal %, fifth in adjusted FG%. Despite their record and subpar record against teams ranked below 100 (5-4), this promises to be a good game. Davis hits one of two...Davis has 20. He's been scoring in bunches lately. Ali hits his customary three. Henry scores for Detroit, but this is well in hand. Ali assists Sandy...it's 75-50. Woods with a steal and a dunk. The score ends with a 77-54 GW win. Jack shot only 6-17 from the field, but 14-16 from the line. Code:
1.15.84: vs Bucknell (6-8) The Bison are beginning to turn on Arlie Jennings, the savior who rode Jack's coattails to Lewisburg. He's 6-8 this year, after a 14-17 record last year. That ended a two-year NCAA run. They aren't threatening for a bid this year. They do have a machine in C John Caudell (17.8 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 2.8 bpg). After that, though, there's really not much. Chris Shull is the second-leading scorer, and he puts up 8.1 ppg. They are an okay rebounding team, but the give up more than they get. That's because they play ugly...they're 227th out of 234 teams in shooting percentage, and they hold their opponents to 41% shooting. But they give up 42.3 rebounds a game, 231st in the nation. This should be a romp for GW, although they aren't strong on rebounds themselves (132nd in the nation, but 2nd in opposing rebounds). GW's 55% adjusted field goal rate will be tested. Rant: GW is third in the nation in field goal %, second in the nation in free throw %...but 146th in 3%. You'd think they'd learn, and GO INSIDE MORE. But Davis, Hulett, Sandy, Ali, and now Armbruster...oy. Armbruster scores off a Jack pass to start things...2:30 into the game. Major Jensen scores for Bucknell. Yup, this will be ugly. Ali scores off a Sandy pass...Sandy draws a charge off Shull. Jack scores from the wing, but Darrell Deaver responds with a dunk. Jack finds Ali, and it's 18-17. Hulett gets the lead back for GW. Surprised Hector hasn't come in...Reed has shown faith in Hulett lately. Caudell scores after Jack gets two free throws. It's 39-35 with 5:37 left. Davis hits a three off a Woods pass. Jack is fouled by Crippen, and he hits both. He has 16-7-3, and it's 44-35. Jack finds Grayson for a score. So far, GW is imposing their offensive will (53%). Caudell scores, but Hector hits a three. Jack comes out, Davis hits, and the lead is 51-37. Jack comes back with 2:30 left. Davis heads back to the line...goes one for two. Caudell has a 6-8-2 line...Smith hits a three. Davis scores..Jak gets a block and the board. Davis is fouled, and he hits one of two again. 55-41 at the half. GW shot 54%, and out-rebounded Bucknell, 22-17. Hulett finds Sandy for a score. Woods with a steal, and he finds Sandy for a three. The lead is thirty. Crippen scores...Jack finds Sandy for a score. Jack is up to 29-14-7. Hulett tips in his own miss...he has 15. Jack finds Hulett for a score. It's 90-56, and they aren't letting up. Jack leaves with 5:17 left, but he may be back. Davis is in, along with Grayson, Woods, Ali and Hector. Armbruster comes in...he's had a tough game (2-1-0, 4 fouls). It's 91-60 with four minutes left. Week 11: 1.16-22.84
BYU (18-0) overtook Maryland in the polls, after the Terrapins lost at #10 Clemson, and #24 Virginia, last week. Cornell suffered their first loss and fell from #3 to #5. North Carolina fell out of the top ten, and down to #18. Clemson, meanwhile, jumped from 22nd to 10th. George Washington also moved, from #16 to #14. Code:
1.20.84: vs Delaware (11-5) The Blue Hens have racked up their record by preying on some bad teams. Their lone win against a semi-credible team is Arizona State, and nobody has them ranked. They also fell to Georgetown by 14, recently. They are not proficient rebounders, but they do score in bunches. And they do with good overall offense (21st in Adjusted FG%). They are awful at stopping good shooting, and their games typically get into...well, shootouts. That benefits GW. Arthur Rodriguez, senior guard, averages 25.1 points a game. He just eclipsed his 2,000th point a few games ago. He is one of two players ahead of Jack in the race for the scoring title (which Douglas Tomasco is winning in a runaway). He shoots wel (51% field, 47% three), but poorly from the line (61%). He shot 87% last year. That doesn't make much sense. Sly Holly (16.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) adds a potent 1-2 punch. The rest of the team contributes here and there...but this team goes through those two. They are without forward David Davis (6.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg). Armbruster opens things with a layup. Jack adds a basket after...and then follows up with another. Jack finds Davis for three, and it's 9-0 two minutes into the game. TImeout, Delaware. Woods takes a charge...Delaware is doing nothing write. Holly gets fouled by Armbruster, and hits both...Hulett scores to respond, though. Sandy hits a three, and it's 14-2. Jack's line is 4-1-1 through four minutes. Rodriguez gets into early foul trouble, and he sits. Delaware is in a world of hurt, down ten to the best player in the country, and their top man is out. Jack gets a three-point play. Holley scores for Delaware. Holley hits a three, and it's 17-11. Justin Duhon gets a tip, and then a steal and a layup, and it's down to two. Guess they aren't in a world of hurt. Hulett scores to end the bleeding, but Ed Walker responds. Jack scores, making it 21-17 with 10:43 left. Stefan Stroh hits two free throws, but Hector gets an and one...he misses, Sandy gets the rebound, and he's fouled. It's 25-21 with 10 left. Hector is fouled shooting a three...he hits two of three. Holy cow! Jack with ANOTHER THREE! They've hit seven or eight this half! Holy cow! Jack is up to 27-12-5. And he scores from the baseline. It's 71-41...22-4 to start the half for GW. Jack HE HITS ANOTHER THREE!!!!! He's got 32! Jack with a steal, but Sandy misses the layup. Jack gets a break with 9:15 left.He comes back with 7:15 left, and the score 80-49. He immediate gets a rebound and finds Grayson. Duhon hits for Delaware. It's 82-52...Stroh hits a three. Jack gets his fourth foul, and he sits down with 5:23 left. He comes back with four minutes left, and the score 82-57. Jack misses, but gets his own rebound. Ali shoots, misses, but Grayson throws it down. Jack misses a couple of shots in garbage time...Stroh (16 points) hits another three. Jack gets one more rebound, and runs out the clock. The final is 86-62. Code:

#1 Maryland lost to #12 North Carolina, 74-73. It was not enough to move them out of the top spot. But it did narrow the gap between them and the new #2 team, Rice. Missouri, former #2 BYU, and Duke round out the top five. George Washington moved up one spot themselves, to #14. They are ahead of Cornell, a former top-three team. By the way, the last victory for GW was Marty Reed's 50th as head coach. He is FIFTY and FOUR. Talk about luckboxing your way into the best job in the country... Code:
2.1.84: at Charleston Southern (8-14) The Buccaneers have some of the best names to grace this dynasty. Elmer Lagasse, Bobby Botello, and Huey Heron help lead this team. Oh, and Ted Williams, he of no high school education, is a redshirt junior here. That's really what I have to say about this team, and their chances. Jack finds Hulett for the first bucket of the game. Woods is fouled by Botello. He makes both...Botello gets Southern on the board. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass, but Danny Smith responds. Botello ties it up. Jack scores, gets fouled by Heron, and hits the free throw. Hulett gets a steal, but nothing comes of it. Danny Liang hits on the other end. Sandy nails a three. Jack with a steal, but Armbruster misses the three. Amazingly, he only has two in this one. Smith has 14, as he gets a steal and a dunk. Sandy nails another three, and it's 89-46. Then a steal and a layup. He's good for a couple of those a game. Jack throws down a dunk off a Hector miss. With six minutes left, it's safe that GW will get to 100. Jack gets a steal and another dunk. Jack scores again. This is absurd. Then he gets an and-one, hits that, and leaves with the score 100-48, and four minutes left. The final is 106-54. 2.4.84: vs Canisius (17-4) The Golden Griffins have built their great record against chumps. They own just one win over a team who has better than 13-10 (13-8 South Florida). Granted, they continued to win after losing stud point guard, David Chandler, to injury after eleven games. Backup-turned-starting point guard Martin Friesen is banged up, but he will play. C Brian Donohoe (11.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg) is the leading player on this team, while guard Jay Railey (11.6 ppg) and fellow post-man Warren Lawson (11.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg), along with forward Warren Lovelace (8.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg) are the backbone. They have the 11th-stingiest defense in the country (60.3 ppg). Jack gets fouled by Donohoe, and hits both free throws to open the scoring. Then he throws down a monster dunk. Jack finds Woods for a basket, and with 16:34, it's 6-0. Lovelave fouls Jack, and he hits both. Friesen hits a bucket after a timeout to open Canisius' scoring. They score the next four points, while getting stingy on defense. Jack gets a tip-in, and it's 10-6 with 12:20 left. Davis finds Hulett, then steals a pass. Sandy is fouled on a dunk, and hits two free throws. It's 14-6 with 10:45 left. Jack finds Hulett. He has an 8-4-2 line, and it's 16-9. Jack gets an and-one. Friesen scores, making it 19-11 with 8:45 left. Justin Grimsley scores...has has four. Friesen hits a three, but Jack answers by finding Ali. Hulett hits a three, and Sterling Bryant responds...though, the way Canisius struggles on offense, a seven-point lead seems like 17. Davis nails a three, but Railey responds. Jack finds Davis, and Friesen travels. Hulett gets fouled, misses both...Jack gets the board, makes it and is fouled. He has 14-7-5 with 1:17 left, and the score 36-27 after the Golden Griffins hit five in a row. That's how the half ends. Canisius shot 48%, 71% from 3, and finds themselves down nine. Jack gets his second foul, and GW gets three in the first 24 seconds. Friesen hits a three. This is no good. Armbruster scores first for GW. Two minutes in and GW has five fouls. This may make for a very tough end to this game. Davis scores, giving him 11. Jack gets an and-one on Donohoe, who has four fouls. Jack hits, and it's 43-32. Jack gets his third foul...odd that he leads GW in fouls. Sandy loves the three, or to dunk. He gets fouled on an attempt, and hits both freebies. Davis gets to the line, and he scores both, making it 47-34 with 13:37 left. Jack has a 19-9-5 line, and it's 49-35. Sandy gets fouled by Lovelace, and hits both. He has six points and five rebounds.
