I don't think that is an either/or. I think how a QB handles the speed of the game is very much tied to how not only their eyes work but how fast they can translate that vision into action. Eyes, brain, react.

It is also the other side of Goff having such a low INT rate.

He plays within the offense and does not take crazy chances. So I think that you leave some plays like this on the table. But you also don't throw some picks that you would have thrown with a less disciplined style.

Considering how the Lions want to play, I think that they are fine with Goff not making that throw.

I guess my comment in my head was drilling it down to "okay, does a Stafford have ever so slightly wider peripheral vision than a Goff", like a literal physical difference that he's born with.

Or is that something that you train (I think that's a thing (?), consciously widening your field of view, something video gamer pros have worked on maybe?)

also a big difference between those two plays was that if Stafford had missed, they were going to overtime. A pick or incompletion there didn't have a big downside, but huge reward if he hit it. The Goff throw was to keep a drive alive, and avoid a punt or long 4th down attempt.

A physical difference seems quite possible: Peripheral vision varies from person to person, study says - UPI.com.

In both video gaming and, well, war, there's a concept of tunnel vision / target fixation where people lose sight of what else is in their field of view because they're narrowed in on something, usually brought on by stress.

Falcons defense looking good so far. Stymied a 4th and inches in the redzone, then a pick in the next drive. The Falcons pass blocking, though? Nightmarish.

Kenny Pickett is not long for this league I don’t think. When you’ve seen that all off-season why wouldn’t you at least take a punt on Trey Lance.

There are some stinky stinky quarterbacks playing today.

Titans got jobbed on that call. Should have been at least a fumble, and possibly a Fumble-Six!

The Falcons pass blocking has gotten worse, and I just didn't think that was possible. Just complete turnstiles. Not even slowing anybody up. I would love to see what Ridder could do if he didn't have a DL in his lap every play. Meanwhile, the Falcons DL still has zero ability to bother a quarterback. The plan to have a rush by committee is not working out.

First game, and the fact the starters only played one series in the whole preseason is showing.

Taylor is starting the year pretty gutless. Twice now the Bengals should have gone for it and instead end up with no points.

That was an interesting call. Falcons punt, and a flag was thrown while the ball is in the air. The punt returner caught the ball inside the 5, runs side-ways and back to try to get clear, and a Falcons defender grabs him from behind and brings him down with a clear horse-collar. The penalty while the ball was in the air was a personal foul on the Panthers, blocking a player while out of bounds. The Refs call the ball down at the point of the tackle with offsetting penalties. Panthers end up with the ball on the one.

Ridder's had more production than Joe Burrow today. People are going to get excited about the Browns defense now. Great coverage, and Garrett's a superstar out there with the pressure.

The weather has clearly bothered Burrow, but this Cleveland defense does look legit. We're going to see a lot of hype and early reactions to Cleveland after this game.

The numbers aren't there, but Watson has looked like the old Watson. He's been quick and accurate with the ball. The weather and drops have killed his stat line.

Has it bothered him? This is lake-effect drizzle. It bothers the cameras more than the fans or the players. It's not even raining anywhere in the state. The Browns' DBs are sticking to good receivers like glue. It's been remarkable. Burrow's day is done - maybe the injury was limiting his mobility more than it looked like.

He had a throw in the first half out to the flat that slipped out of his hand and was off by 20+ yards. He put a glove on his throwing hand right after that.

The Falcons getting this win after that second pick change the game. The defense actually started getting to Young, and Ridder got off some well timed passes.

That's up the quarterback whether he's comfortable with a glove. They all try them. But they have towels for a reason. If it's a problem, he should be communicating with the center about it. It's not wet enough out there that a center can't deliver a reasonably dry ball.

The animation on the Fox info box is an excellent example of letting your art department get out of hand. That's already old, repetitive and annoying, and I'm only halfway through the first quarter of the first game. Not as bad as the glow-pucks on their hockey telecasts back in the '90s.

I think the Dolphins and Chargers need to switch cities. I can't remember the last time the stadium I will always call Joe Robbie Stadium was as loud as SoFi was after that TC by Tyreek Hill.

Getsy's playcalling this game has been atrocious. Up until the INT Fields had been on target with this throws and overall looks improved over last year. Ball placement was good, which he struggled with last year.

Running every single first down and then either another run or a screen/dumpoff on 2nd down gets rather predictable by this point in the 2nd half though.

Before we crucify Getsy, I wonder how many open receivers Fields had downfield that instead wound up being those dump offs. I'm not convinced those were all just play calling.

edit: That said, I do agree, his playcalling has been substandard. But I can't put it all on him, 'cause I don't trust Fields to actually recognize what an open receiver is.

I think Fields is going to lose receivers, as well. He doesn't seem to understand that when he throws high and there's a defender bearing down, it had better be worth it.

If Darnell Mooney limped back to the huddle at the end of the game and smacked Fields, it would have been understandable. The one at the end where he tweaked a knee or ankle was egregious - and far from the first time he did it to Mooney today.
