After a relatively unimpressive preseason, Williams has turned things up a notch for NEC play. They take over the top spot in the conference standings tonight, and they do it in the way they'd like most: by beating their arch-rival (us) in the rival's gym.

We shoot terribly and turn the ball over 16 times, yet we still have a chance to tie the game on our last possession. David McQuiston takes the first shot and misses, but we get the rebound and reset. Partially through our own carelessness and partially because of good defense from the Ephs, the last chance falls to Dominic Moss, who has attempted 68 three-pointers in his career and made 10 of them. Not surprisingly, Dominic misses this one too.
Record: 11-4 (3-1).

We win this game with defense, making up for another so-so shooting performance.

It seems like each game features one Mammoth who takes a lot of threes and misses many of them. Tonight's culprit was David McQuiston, who shot well the game before.

With 24 seconds remaining in a tie game, everyone in the Wesleyan gym knows we'll try to get the ball in Perry Jordan's hands. That's exactly what Toby Whittaker draws up, and his players execute the plan well. Perry's 12-footer from the left wing isn't the shot he wanted, but it drops, and we win.

Neither team plays much defense and both teams shoot well. That's how you get a combined score that almost reaches 200.

Williams loses at home to Bates, so both we and the Ephs are 5-1 in the league.

RPI confirms that winless Colby is indeed the worst team in Division I men's college basketball. When the White Mules are only three points behind us at halftime, Coach Whittaker challenges his players to make sure that the outcome of game can't turn on a play or two.

Dominic Moss and Perry Jordan respond as you'd hope seniors would do, asserting themselves in the second half and leading their team to a convincing victory. D-Moss's 15 rebounds are a career high.
Record: 14-4 (6-1).

We're back in the Mid-Major Poll, coming in at #21 this week. Only two other teams from Level 1 conferences like the NEC are ranked: #16 Houston Baptist from the Great West and #22 Texas State from the Southland Conference. Both those teams have higher Prestige than we do; Houston Baptist is at 30 and Texas State is at 23; we're at 17.

Well done, Mammoths.

And, just like that, we nearly give a game away at home.

Alan Rasberry saves our blushes with a crucial steal and breakaway layup with three seconds remaining. David McQuiston is also a hero, thanks to the bucket that tied the score at the 0:09 mark.

Rasberry's 6 steals and Dominic Moss's 15 rebounds (for the second straight game) are the stats that leap out off a page full of otherwise unremarkable numbers. Still, a win is a win.

And a loss is a loss.

We're never truly competitive in this game, because we (1) turn the ball over way too many times and (2) shoot badly. When we struggle, one or both of these things happen.

In the New England Conference, Amherst is understandably the opponent most teams want to beat, especially at Amherst. Bates is a good team, and when we make this many mistakes, a good team will beat us.

As the conference season reaches the halfway point, Williams retains their one-game lead over us in the NEC standings. Our next game is in Williamstown, so watch this space.

Our path to the NEC regular season championship gets a lot harder, as the Ephs defend their home court and sweep the season series with us.

Again, turnovers are the problem. A sub-par game from Perry Jordan doesn't help, either. Williams has done a good job of keeping Perry under wraps; he's scored 17 points in two games against the Ephs, while averaging 19.0 per game for the season.
Record: 15-6 (7-3).
