Left fielder Mike Young slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Baltimore
Orioles rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over reeling Cleveland
Indians, 10 to 9.

Baltimore tallied 5 runs in the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits.  The
highlight belonged to Cal Ripken who silenced the stadium when he stroked a
single bringing in two baserunners.  Baltimore ended up with 14 hits for the
game while Cleveland had 11.  

Scott McGregor(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and
allowing 6 runs. Nate Snell recorded the save, his 1st.  Vern Ruhle(0-2) took
the loss.  He pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 walk.


MILWAUKEE AT DETROIT

Larry Herndon had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Walt Terrell tossed a complete
game as the Detroit Tigers topped the ice-cold Milwaukee Brewers in 11
innings by a score of 4 to 3 at TIGER STADIUM.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  Detroit ended up winning it in
the 11th inning.  Darrell Evans drew a walk.  Chet Lemon stepped up next and
he slapped a base-hit.  Herndon then doubled giving Detroit the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd.  Detroit finished with 10 hits in the
victory.  

Terrell(2-0) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Jaime Cocanower(0-1) in relief.  By giving up 1 run in 3 and 1/3 innings
his ERA increased from 0.59 to 0.96.  


BOSTON AT KANSAS CITY

Roger Clemens tossed a fine 3 hitter at ROYALS STADIUM where the Boston Red
Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7 to 1.

Boston came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning when they
scored 5 runs on 3 hits.  The key at-bat was by Marty Barrett who silenced
ROYALS STADIUM as he delivered a base-hit scoring two baserunners.  Boston
banged out 9 on the afternoon.  

Clemens(1-0) allowed 1 run on the game. Danny Jackson(0-1) was the loser.  He
allowed 6 hits and 6 walks in 7 innings.

CALIFORNIA AT MINNESOTA

Tim Teufel homered and Frank Viola threw a complete game shutout at METRODOME
as the Minnesota Twins beat the California Angels by the count of 3 to
0.

Viola(2-0) gave Minnesota a solid outing.  He surrendered only 4 hits and 5
walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.00 to 1.50.  Neither team managed
to score after the 4th inning.  

Ron Romanick(0-2) suffered the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 9 hits in 6 and
2/3 innings.

SEATTLE AT OAKLAND

Jose Rijo came through with a solid 3 innings as the Oakland A's defeated the
Seattle Mariners by a score of 11 to 5 at OAKLAND COLISEUM.

Although Chris Codiroli(1-2) had a rough time of it, he still managed to pick
up the win.  He gave up 10 hits and 9 walks in 6 innings.  Rijo was great in
relief and recorded his 1st save.  

Bill Swift(0-2) was tagged with the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8
hits and 3 walks in 2 innings.

TEXAS AT TORONTO

At EXHIBITION STADIUM the seemingly unstoppable Toronto Blue Jays outscored
the Texas Rangers 5 to 2.

Jim Clancy(2-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 6 and 1/3 innings surrendering 3
hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA to 2.38.  Clancy got help from Tom Henke
who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 4th save.  

Burt Hooton(1-1) was given the loss.  He surrendered 3 runs and 8 hits in 5
and 2/3 innings.

Zane Smith pitched a 3 hitter and Bob Horner had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at
FULTON CTY STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds by the
count of 6 to 1.

Atlanta started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first when they tallied 4 runs on 5 hits.  That early scoring was all that
Smith(1-0) needed.  The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither
team was able to score again.  

John Stuper(0-1) was the loser.  He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an
inning.

PHILADELPHIA AT CHICAGO

Bob Dernier had 2 base hits as the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies
by a score of 5 to 4.

Chicago set the tone of the game in the first inning when they scored 2 runs
on 2 hits.  Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but Chicago was able to put
down the rally.  

Ray Fontenot(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 1 run. Lee Smith recorded his 1st save.  The loss was charged to
Shane Rawley(1-1).  He gave up 8 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.  

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' John Felske said. 'We did
what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

HOUSTON AT LOS ANGELES

In an exciting finish the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out a win over the
Houston Astros by a score of 5 to 4 at DODGER STADIUM.

The deciding run was scored by Los Angeles in the bottom of the 9th.  Pedro
Guerrero laced a single.  After an out was recorded, Greg Brock stepped in
and he doubled.  Ken Landreaux then hit a sacrifice fly giving Los Angeles
the victory as 34,761 happy fans celebrated wildly.  Los Angeles banged out
10 on the afternoon.  

Tom Niedenfuer(2-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Jeff Heathcock(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run in 2/3
of an inning and saw his ERA increase from 1.93 to 3.38.  


NEW YORK AT PITTSBURGH

One run was the difference at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the New York Mets
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 3.

New York tallied 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning.  Howard Johnson led off
and started the attack as he laced a base-knock.  Wally Backman got his
chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.  Kelvin Chapman was
a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Ed Lynch was up next and he reached
on an error.  Mookie Wilson came to the plate and lost the ball over the
fence for three runs (his 3rd of the season).  That was all the offense they
were to need.  Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable
to push the needed runs across.  

Lynch(1-0) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Roger McDowell
was credited with his 1st save.  Jose Deleon(0-1) took the loss.  He
surrendered 4 runs and 4 hits in 7 innings.  

'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Chuck Tanner
said after the game.  'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

MONTREAL AT ST. LOUIS

Baseballs were flying all over the ballpark as the St. Louis Cardinals ran
roughshod over the seemingly hapless Montreal Expos.  The St. Louis offense
rolled up a total of 10 runs!.

St. Louis jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning as they scored 3 runs on 4
base hits.  The early run support proved sufficient for Danny Cox(1-0) and
St. Louis.  That was all the run support Cox required.  St. Louis had 16 hits
overall, while Montreal had 4.  

Bill Gullickson(0-1) was given the loss. His ERA ballooned from 2.70 to 4.97
as he allowed 5 runs in 6 innings.

6,055 fans were treated to a fine game at MUNICIPAL STADIUM as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Cleveland Indians registered 5
runs in the 4th inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

Cleveland tallied 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning when they had 3 base
hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Joe Carter who electrified
MUNICIPAL STADIUM when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 1st of the
season).  Baltimore had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  

The victory went to Curt Wardle(1-1) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 6
runs. Tom Waddell was credited with his 1st save.  Ken Dixon(0-2) was given
the loss in relief.  He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2
walks.

Shortstop Cal Ripken blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI for Baltimore but his
effort was wasted in the loss.

BOSTON AT KANSAS CITY

Jim Rice ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Oil Can Boyd went the distance as
the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals by a score of 16 to 7.

Rice enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run (his 3rd of the
season) in the 4th inning and laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning.  Boston
bats were hot in the 7th inning when they had 4 runs on 6 hits.  The Boston
offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.  

The win went to Boyd(2-0) who allowed 7 runs in the game. Charlie
Leibrandt(0-2) was the loser.  He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs
in 2 and 1/3 innings.  


CALIFORNIA AT MINNESOTA

Kirby Puckett had 2 base hits and John Butcher tossed a complete game at
METRODOME where the Minnesota Twins beat the California Angels by the score
of 7 to 3.

Butcher(2-0) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He surrendered
only 8 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  Minnesota had a total of 7 hits for the
game.  

Mike Witt(1-1) was hit with the loss.  He allowed 5 runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of
an inning.

CHICAGO AT NEW YORK

Rickey Henderson had 2 base hits as the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago

Ron Guidry(2-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Guidry.  He
surrendered 4 hits and no walks in 6 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from
2.45 to 2.14.  Chicago went down quietly in the 9th.  

Guidry was helped out by Dave Righetti who recorded his 3rd save.  Floyd
Bannister(0-2) took the loss.  He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 5
hits and 3 walks.

Jesse Barfield cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the sizzling Toronto Blue
Jays outscored the Texas Rangers 13 to 5.

Barfield had a great day at the plate.  He lost the ball over the fence for
three runs in the 3rd inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 5th of the
season) in the 6th inning.  Toronto dominated offensively as they scored in 6
different innings.  

Dave Stieb(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Jeff Russell(0-1) absorbed the loss.  He allowed Toronto 6 runs in 4 and 2/3
innings of work.  

Toronto continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 9 games and
counting. Bobby Cox was in a talkative mood after the ballgame.  'Fellows, I
don't know what to tell you. our guys are just playing lights out lately.
Everything and everybody is just really hitting on all cylinders.  I know it
can't last forever - but that isn't going to stop us from trying!'

Second baseman Manny Trillo had 3 base hits as the San Francisco Giants topped
the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 4 to 3 at RIVERFRONT STADIUM.

San Francisco had 3 runs cross the plate in the top of the 6th inning with the
help of 3 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Jeff Leonard who silenced
the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season).  San
Francisco took care of Cincinnati with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Atlee Hammaker(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Mark Davis earned his 4th save.  Jay Tibbs(0-2) was tagged
with the loss.

The Los Angeles Dodgers nipped the San Diego Padres 2 to 1 at JACK MURPHY
STADIUM in a hard fought contest.

The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning.  After two outs Bill
Madlock lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 2nd of the season).  Los Angeles
had only 5 hits for the afternoon.  

Tom Niedenfuer(3-0) allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Mark Thurmond(0-1) suffered the loss.  He surrendered just 5 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings.  


MONTREAL AT ST. LOUIS

Hubie Brooks had 2 base hits at BUSCH STADIUM as the Montreal Expos came back
dramatically to top the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 7 to 5.

Montreal had the winning rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 4 base
hits.  Brooks led off and keyed the rally when he lined a one-base hit.
Terry Francona stepped up to the plate and he slapped a single.  Mitch
Webster then lined a single knocking in a run.  Webster took second on the
throw.  Mike Fitzgerald got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
Jim Wohlford was the next batter, but he struck out.  Tim Raines added to the
outburst and was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Vance Law came next
and he lined a base-hit which was good for two more runs.  Law took second on
the throw.  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times.

The win was credited to Floyd Youmans(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing 2 runs.
Jeff Reardon recorded his 4th save.  The losing pitcher was Ricky Horton(0-2)
in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning.  

Whitey Herzog was not very talkative after his team's tough loss.  'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Buck Rodgers will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'

Don Sutton was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the California Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners by the score of 8
to 4 at ANAHEIM STADIUM.

Sutton(2-0) pitched a solid game.  He surrendered 11 hits and 3 walks in 9
innings.  Both teams finished the game with 11 hits.  

Mike Moore(1-2) was charged with the loss.  He was unable to control the
California offense and allowed 11 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.

Bob Ojeda mowed down 11 Chicago batters at COMISKEY PARK as the Boston Red Sox
beat the Chicago White Sox by the count of 3 to 2.

Ojeda(2-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and
no walks lowering his ERA to 2.57.  Chicago threatened in the 9th but Boston
was able to put down the rally.  

Steve Crawford recorded the save, his 2nd.  Tom Seaver(0-2) took the loss.
Tony LaRussa was impressed with Ojeda and his 11 strikeouts.  'It's tough to
generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

KANSAS CITY AT DETROIT

The Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers in 12 innings by a score of
8 to 5 at TIGER STADIUM.

The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Kansas City came out the victor in the
12th inning.  After an out was recorded, George Brett started the rally when
he drew a walk.  One out later, Frank White came to the plate and laced a
one-base hit.  Steve Balboni then doubled plating a run.  Darryl Motley came
up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.  John Wathan stepped
into the box and was hit by a pitch scoring another run.  Onix Concepcion did
his part to keep things going and drew a walk scoring the final run of the
inning.  This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as
the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.  

Bret Saberhagen(1-2) allowed 5 runs in 11 innings, and picked up the victory.
Dan Quisenberry got the save, his 1st.  The losing pitcher was Randy
O'Neal(0-1) in relief.  


TEXAS AT MILWAUKEE

One run was the difference at COUNTY STADIUM as the Texas Rangers defeated the
slumping Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings 3 to 2.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Texas was victorious in the
10th inning.  Pete O'Brien reached on an error.  Jaime Cocanower then threw a
wild pitch.  Larry Parrish then drew a walk.  Duane Walker was up next and he
drew a walk to load the bases.  Don Slaught stepped into the box and hit a
sacrifice fly scoring the run.  Texas and Milwaukee each finished the
afternoon with 5 hits.  

The victory was credited to Dave Rozema(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Cocanower(0-2) was the loser in relief.  It was a tough
loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 and 1/3 innings of
work.  


CLEVELAND AT NEW YORK

separated the combatants at game's end.  The Cleveland Indians won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

Obviously without his best stuff, Roy Smith(1-0) still hung on to pick up the
win.  He gave up 4 runs, 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.  Both teams ended
up with 10 on the afternoon.  

Tom Waddell gained credit for his 2nd save. Ed Whitson(0-1) absorbed the loss.
He was touched for 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.  

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Smith, 'I was just
giving us a chance to win.'

MINNESOTA AT OAKLAND

10,502 fans watched an exciting game at OAKLAND COLISEUM.  The Oakland A's
topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.

Jay Howell(1-0) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning pitcher.
He was reached for 4 hits and 1 walk in 3 and 2/3 innings and mowed down 6
Minnesota batters reducing his ERA from 10.80 to 3.38.  Despite losing,
Minnesota out-hit Oakland 9 to 2.  

Bert Blyleven(1-2) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks.

BALTIMORE AT TORONTO

Valenzuela(3-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He gave up just 6
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Los Angeles had a total of 13 hits for the
game.  

Eric Show(1-1) was given the loss.  Valenzuela, when asked about his 12
strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20
and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we
won it feels great!'

Porter had a big day at the plate.  He lofted a three-run bomb (his 3rd of the
season) in the 1st inning and lined a base-hit which plated a run in the 6th
inning.  St. Louis finished with 14 hits in the victory.  

Joaquin Andujar(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings
and allowing 7 runs. Ken Dayley recorded his 1st save.  Rick Rhoden(0-2) was
hit with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 5 walks in 4 and
2/3 innings.

Beniquez enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He clubbed a three-run home run in
the 1st inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 2nd of the season) in the 3rd
inning.  California banged out 12 on the afternoon.  

The victory went to McCaskill(1-1) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Matt
Young(1-1) was the loser.  He gave up 8 runs in 2 innings of work.

Harold Baines had 4 hits and 2 RBI at COMISKEY PARK as the Chicago White Sox
came back dramatically to top the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6 to
5.

Chicago had the winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Greg
Walker led off the inning for Chicago when he laced a base-knock.  Tim Hulett
was next and he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded, Luis Salazar stepped
up to the plate and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Ozzie
Guillen stepped in and he lined a single making Chicago the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Chicago ended up with 12 hits for
the game while Boston had 7.  

The win went to Juan Agosto(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Bruce
Hurst(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He was unable to control the Chicago
offense and allowed 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.  

Tony LaRussa was in great spirits in his post-game interview.  Yet, when asked
about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered,
'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, John McNamara, feels
right now - and it's not very good.  It's terrible when you come up on the
short end of one of these!'


KANSAS CITY AT DETROIT

Detroit came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  The big moment
was provided by Lemon who thrilled the crowd when he doubled emptying the
bases.  Detroit had just 6 hits for the afternoon.  

Tanana(2-0) was credited with the shutout. Mark Gubicza(0-1) took the loss.
He surrendered 3 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Noles got relief help from Dave Schmidt who gained credit for his 1st save.
Moose Haas(0-2) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits and
3 walks.

Rickey Henderson jacked one out of the ballyard as the New York Yankees

Cleveland was unable to recover after New York went ahead in the bottom of the
2nd inning scoring a single run utilizing 3 base hits.  That early scoring
was all that Joe Cowley(2-0) needed.  Overall New York out-hit Cleveland 10
to 4.  

Dave Righetti earned his 4th save.  Neal Heaton(0-2) was tagged with the loss.
He was touched for 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

reached for 9 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 1.72 to
1.46.  Minnesota managed 8 in their victory.  

Tim Birtsas(0-3) suffered the loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in 5
innings.

2nd inning and tripled plating two runs in the 8th inning.  Baltimore
finished with 13 hits while Toronto ended up with 8.  

The victory was credited to Mike Flanagan(1-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 4
runs. Luis Leal(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Alan Ashby slammed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Houston Astros beat the

Ashby was in a groove all day.  The Atlanta fans hated to see him approaching
the batter's box.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, blasted a
two-run home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th inning and doubled which
plated a run in the 8th inning.  Houston had 15 hits overall, while Atlanta
had 12.  

The win was credited to Nolan Ryan(3-0) who went 7 innings allowing 4 runs.
Rick Camp(1-3) was given the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
allowing 3 hits and 2 walks.

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park today,' Ashby said.  'I'm

Mark Davis recorded his 5th save.

First baseman Leon Durham collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat at OLYMPIC
STADIUM as the Chicago Cubs pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the

Chicago scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning as they scored
6 runs on 2 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Durham who helped
quiet the crowd when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand
Slam homerun (his 3rd of the season).  Both teams ended up with 9 on the
afternoon.  

Warren Brusstar(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Floyd Youmans(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  After the
game, it took a long while before Buck Rodgers emerged from his office.  In a
subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions.  He concluded with,
'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think
you'll understand.  I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted
over in the Chicago locker room.'

delivered a base-hit.  After an out was recorded, George Foster came to the
plate and cracked a two-run shot (his 2nd of the season).  New York had 10
hits for the game and Philadelphia had 7.  

The winning pitcher was Sid Fernandez(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings.
John Denny(0-3) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 6 innings and surrendered
8 hits and 1 walk.

The score was tied at 5 after nine.  Finally, Los Angeles pulled the game out
in the 11th inning.  Mike Marshall slapped a one-base hit.  Marshall was safe
on a stolen base.  Two outs later Guerrero stepped in and he was walked
intentionally.  Greg Brock was up next and he laced a base-hit scoring the
run.  Los Angeles had 14 hits for the afternoon while San Diego had 9.

Diaz(2-0) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Tom Niedenfuer was
credited with his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Roy Lee Jackson(0-2) in
relief.  He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk in 3 innings.

6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.  'Tudor just dominated us' losing pitcher
Tunnell said.  'Hopefully we can get to him the next time around'

In a good matchup it was the Seattle Mariners 5, the California Angels 3 at
ANAHEIM STADIUM.

Seattle drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits.  Domingo Ramos started the inning off
right when he delivered a base-hit.  Phil Bradley stepped up next and he
popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 3rd of the season).  California
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  

The winning pitcher was Frank Wills(2-0) who allowed 1 run in 5 and 1/3
innings. Wills got help from Edwin Nunez who was credited with his 1st save.
Jim Slaton(0-2) was given the loss.  

Gene Mauch was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of
loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals.  We've
been through this many times - it's the nature of the game.  We'll be fine -
as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'

The key offensive moment was provided by Wade Boggs who quieted the home
crowd when he slapped a base-hit which was good for two runs.  Boston rapped
out 11 hits for the afternoon.  

The victory went to Al Nipper(2-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Bob
Stanley earned his 2nd save.  Britt Burns(1-1) was charged with the loss.

In an embarrassing outing for the Detroit Tigers pitching staff, Kansas City
Royals flexed their collective muscle amassing 8 runs as Bud Black(1-1), with
relief help from Dan Quisenberry, mystified Detroit.

Kansas City jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied
2 runs on 1 hit.  That was all the runs Black needed.  Kansas City had 9 hits
for the game and Detroit had 5.  

Quisenberry gained credit for his 2nd save.  Dan Petry(2-1) absorbed the loss.
He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 4 walks.

TEXAS AT MILWAUKEE

In a game for the baseball purist, Ted Higuera(1-1) and Mike Mason(0-3)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Milwaukee Brewers finally emerged
victorious over Texas Rangers, 2 to 0.

Milwaukee brought 2 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning.
The big moment was provided by Ben Oglivie who came through for the home fans
when he tripled bringing in two baserunners.  After the 4th inning, neither
team was able to score.  

Higuera got help from Bob Gibson who earned his 1st save.  George Bamberger
was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy,
it's great to get the monkey off our back.  Now maybe we can relax a little
and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'

CLEVELAND AT NEW YORK

Don Schulze(1-2) pitched a solid game.  He went 6 innings surrendering 5 hits
and 4 walks.  Schulze recorded 8 strikeouts lowering his ERA to 3.00.
Cleveland had 10 hits for the afternoon while New York had 6.  

Jamie Easterly recorded the save, his 1st.  Phil Niekro(1-1) was the loser.
He pitched 9 innings giving up 10 hits and 3 walks.

MINNESOTA AT OAKLAND

At OAKLAND COLISEUM, the Oakland faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel.  Ken Schrom(1-1) finally bested his Oakland counterpart, Bill
Krueger(2-1), by the score of 3 to 1.

Schrom pitched well for Minnesota in their victory.  He surrendered 7 hits and
3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 9.64 to 4.76.  Oakland
threatened in the 9th but Minnesota was able to put down the rally.  

Pete Filson recorded his 2nd save.  Krueger was tagged with the loss.  'I had
a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was
nothing.' Schrom said.  'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the
ball where I wanted it.'

BALTIMORE AT TORONTO

Al Oliver collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI at EXHIBITION STADIUM as
the Toronto Blue Jays won a thriller over the Baltimore Orioles in, 4 to
3.

The game was won by Toronto with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Jesse
Barfield drew a walk.  Barfield was running on the next pitch and he stole
second.  After another out, Cliff Johnson was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out.  Rance Mulliniks stepped in and he was walked intentionally.
Oliver stepped into the box and doubled giving Toronto the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd.  Baltimore was out-hit by Toronto, 12 hits to
4.  

Dennis Lamp(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Nate Snell(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 2 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks.

This win by Toronto continues their recent hot streak.  In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2.  For the season, they are a division
leading 10-2.  With this loss, Baltimore has a 5-5 record of late, 5-6
overall.

Scott pitched a fine game.  He was reached for 5 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings
improving his ERA from 2.77 to 1.80.  Houston managed 7 in their victory.

Dave Smith earned the save, his 3rd.  The Houston ballclub's record now stands
at 6-6.  Atlanta has a record of 4-7 after the loss.

Andy McGaffigan mowed down 10 San Francisco batters at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as
the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants by the count of 1 to
0.

McGaffigan(2-0) gave Cincinnati a solid outing.  He went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 9 hits and no walks seeing his ERA drop from 5.40 to 2.19.  Although
they lost, San Francisco did out-hit Cincinnati 10 to 5.  

McGaffigan was helped out by Ted Power who recorded his 3rd save.  Dave
Lapoint(0-3) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 1 run and 4 hits in 5
innings.  

'Everything felt great' McGaffigan said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I
could throw it by everybody today.'

CHICAGO AT MONTREAL

Jody Davis collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat as the Chicago Cubs
defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 10 to 3 at OLYMPIC STADIUM.

Davis enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He launched a Grand Slam homerun (his
3rd of the season) in the 2nd inning and doubled plating two runs in the 3rd
inning.  Overall Chicago out-hit Montreal 13 to 8.  

The win went to Scott Sanderson(1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
The losing pitcher was Dan Schatzeder(0-1).  He gave up 4 runs in 1 inning
and saw his ERA jump from 3.86 to 13.50.  


NEW YORK AT PHILADELPHIA

Mike Schmidt blasted 2 homeruns and Steve Carlton went the distance as the
Philadelphia Phillies topped the New York Mets by a score of 5 to 1 at
VETERANS STADIUM.

Schmidt had a good day at the plate.  He blasted a solo shot in the 1st
inning, ripping a solo home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 3rd inning and
doubled in the 5th inning.  The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as
neither team was able to score again.  

The victory was credited to Carlton(1-1) who went the distance, allowing 1
run. Ron Darling(0-2) ended up with the loss.  He served up 3 homeruns in his
4 innings.  


LOS ANGELES AT SAN DIEGO

innings.  Los Angeles won despite being out-hit by San Diego 10 hits to 7.

Reuss got relief help from Ken Howell who gained credit for his 2nd save. The
loss was charged to Lamarr Hoyt(1-1).  He allowed Los Angeles 7 runs in 6
innings of work.  


PITTSBURGH AT ST. LOUIS

Bob Forsch was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game and Cesar Cedeno had 4 hits and 5 RBI at BUSCH STADIUM where the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 3.

It was a good day for St. Louis thanks to Cedeno.  He doubled knocking in a
run in the 1st inning, laced a single in the 3rd inning, tripled scoring two
baserunners in the 4th inning and lined a one-base hit plating two runs in
the 6th inning.  St. Louis had a total of 13 hits for the game.

Forsch(1-0) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Larry
McWilliams(0-2) suffered the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 3
walks in 4 innings.

In a lop-sided win the Oakland A's ripped the California Angels by a 9 to 3
count.

Bruce Bochte had a good day at the plate.  He slapped a single which was good
for two runs in the 4th inning, delivered a one-base hit scoring a run in the
7th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 2nd of the season) in the 9th
inning.  California was out-hit by Oakland, 12 hits to 7.  

Chris Codiroli(2-2) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Jay
Howell recorded the save, his 2nd.  Mike Witt(1-2) was the loser.  He
struggled with his control issuing 9 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  


MILWAUKEE AT CHICAGO

13,390 fans watched an exciting game at COMISKEY PARK.  The Chicago White Sox
topped the Milwaukee Brewers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Milwaukee lost it in the 2nd inning when Chicago did all their damage when
they tallied 3 runs on 5 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.
Chicago banged out 9 on the afternoon.  

The victory went to Floyd Bannister(1-2) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Bob James gained credit for his 2nd save.  Ray Burris(0-2) was given the
loss.  


DETROIT AT CLEVELAND

Right fielder Carmen Castillo slammed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the
Cleveland Indians topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 4 at MUNICIPAL
STADIUM.

Castillo enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He bombed a two-run dinger in the
2nd inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 2nd of the season) in
the 5th inning and laced a base-knock in the 8th inning.  Detroit had 13 hits
in the game while Cleveland had 9, but Cleveland had the more timely hits.

The win was credited to Vern Ruhle(1-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2
runs. Walt Terrell(2-1) was charged with the loss.  He allowed Cleveland 5
runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work.

Alvin Davis had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at METRODOME as the Seattle Mariners won
in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Minnesota Twins by the count of 2
to 1.

Seattle came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs
using 2 hits.  Barry Bonnell led off and he doubled.  Jack Perconte next to
the plate and he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded, Phil Bradley came
to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases.  Davis came up and he lined a
single bringing in two baserunners.  Seattle managed 8 in their victory.

Roy Thomas(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Frank Viola(2-1).  Chuck Cottier was
feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game,
'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in
silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the
stadium is cloaked in virtual silence.  Weird. but GREAT!'

BALTIMORE AT TEXAS

Eddie Murray had 4 hits as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Texas Rangers by
a score of 4 to 3 at ARLINGTON STADIUM.

The game was won by Baltimore with a run in the top of the 9th inning.  Murray
banged out a single.  Fred Lynn stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Larry
Sheets then smacked a single scoring the run.  Baltimore and Texas each
finished the afternoon with 12 hits.  

Sammy Stewart(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3
innings. Dave Rozema(1-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He allowed 3 hits and
3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

KANSAS CITY AT TORONTO

Lloyd Moseby hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI at EXHIBITION STADIUM as the
Toronto Blue Jays won in their last at-bat beating the Kansas City Royals by
the count of 5 to 3.

Toronto won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2
base hits.  After two were out Tony Fernandez opened up the rally as he
lashed a single.  Moseby stepped up to the plate and he cracked a two-run
shot (his 4th of the season) giving Toronto the win and sending the home town
fans into a frenzy.  Toronto finished with 8 hits in the victory.  

The victory was credited to Dennis Lamp(4-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Joe Beckwith(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He gave up 2
hits and no walks in 1 and 2/3 innings.

The Houston Astros easily topped the Cincinnati Reds; the final score was 10
to 3.

Jerry Mumphrey provided much of the offense.  He delivered a single in the 4th
inning, tripled plating a run in the 8th inning and launched a rocket-shot
out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th
inning.  Overall Houston out-hit Cincinnati 13 to 3.  

Frank Dipino(2-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Tom
Hume(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He allowed 7 runs and 4 hits in 1
inning.  

Houston now has a record of 7-6.  Cincinnati has a record of 4-9, worst in the
division after the loss.

PHILADELPHIA AT MONTREAL

Tim Wallach had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 7 to 4.

Montreal had the winning rally in the 8th inning with 3 runs on 2 hits.  After
an out was recorded, Scot Thompson began the Montreal spurt when he drew a
walk.  Jim Wohlford followed and he laced a one-base hit.  Tim Raines then
drew a walk to load the bases.  U.L. Washington was up next and he hit a
sacrifice fly which scored a run.  Wallach stepped into the box and stroked a
base-hit bringing in another run.  Wallach took second on the throw.  Hubie
Brooks added to the uprising and was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Terry Francona came next and he drew a walk scoring the final run of the
inning.  Jeff Reardon relieved and was untouched by Philadelphia as he
recorded the save, his 6th.  

The win went to Tim Burke(2-0) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Dave
Rucker(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He gave up 4 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings of work.

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 2 at THREE
RIVERS STADIUM.

Chicago went ahead for good in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one runner
using 2 hits.  Chicago had 11 hits for the afternoon.  

The winning pitcher was Dennis Eckersley(3-0) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings.
Lee Smith earned the save, his 2nd.  Rick Reuschel(2-1) was the losing
pitcher.  He was unable to control the Chicago offense and allowed 8 hits and
2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.  


ATLANTA AT SAN DIEGO

Dave Dravecky came through with a solid 7 and one third innings at JACK MURPHY
STADIUM as the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 3 to 0.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning San Diego scored 2 runs.  That was all the
runs Dravecky(1-0) needed.  San Diego had 6 hits overall, while Atlanta had
3.  

Goose Gossage recorded his 4th save.  Zane Smith(1-1) was tagged with the
loss.  The San Diego ballclub's record now stands at 7-5.  Eddie Haas was
unhappy with his club's recent performance.  'We can't keep losing games' he
said.  'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

LOS ANGELES AT SAN FRANCISCO

Jeff Leonard connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the San Francisco
Giants won a dandy at CANDLESTICK PARK over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4 to
2.

San Francisco erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs
using 2 hits.  Leonard led off and started the rally when he lined a one-base
hit.  After an out was recorded, Ricky Adams came up and he smashed a two-run
homer (his 1st of the season) resulting in an exciting win for San Francisco
and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Although they
lost, Los Angeles did out-hit San Francisco 9 to 6.  

Scott Garrelts(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The
loss was charged to Carlos Diaz(2-1) in relief.  He gave up 2 runs and 2 hits
in 1/3 of an inning.

The New York Mets edged the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings at BUSCH STADIUM

in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Clint Hurdle blasted a solo
shot (his 1st of the season).  New York ended up with 12 hits for the game
while St. Louis had 6.  

Tom Gorman(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Bill
Campbell(0-2) was hit with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 5 hits and 1
walk in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Don Sutton blanked Oakland in a very well-pitched complete game at ANAHEIM
STADIUM as the California Angels beat the Oakland A's 5 to 0.

Sutton(3-0) put on a good performance.  He allowed only 6 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.13 to 2.25.  The pitchers took over after
the 1st inning as neither team was able to score again.  

Steve McCatty(0-2) was the loser.  The California ballclub's record now stands
at 7-7.  With the loss, the Oakland ballclub's record is 6-8.

MILWAUKEE AT CHICAGO

At COMISKEY PARK, the Chicago faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel.  Joel Davis(1-0) finally bested his Milwaukee counterpart, Pete
Vuckovich(0-1), by the score of 1 to 0.

The game's lone run was scored in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Davis was
helped out by Bob James who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 3rd
save.  

Vuckovich took the loss.  He pitched 7 innings allowing 9 hits and 3 walks. 'I
just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Davis, 'I got burned on a
couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, Minnesota Twins came from
behind to top Seattle Mariners in 10 innings, 6 to 5.

The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Minnesota ended up winning it in the 10th
inning.  Tim Teufel kicked off the action when he hit a bases-empty home run
(his 4th of the season).  After another out, Tim Laudner struck out, unable
to help the rally.  Kirby Puckett then laced a single.  Puckett took his lead
and swiped second.  Dave Meier stepped into the box and laced a one-base hit
giving Minnesota the victory and sending the 18,068 home-town fans home
happy.  For the game Minnesota out-hit Seattle 16 to 13.  

The win went to Frank Eufemia(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 3 and 1/3 innings. Ed
Vande Berg(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning and

Boston was unable to recover after New York went ahead in the 7th inning

(his 2nd of the season).  New York had 12 hits overall, while Boston had 9.

Ron Guidry(3-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Dave
Righetti recorded his 5th save.  Oil Can Boyd(2-1) was tagged with the loss.

Floyd Rayford cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Mike Boddicker went the
distance as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Texas Rangers by the score of
8 to 3 at ARLINGTON STADIUM.

Rayford led the offense for Baltimore.  He stroked a single bringing in two
baserunners in the 2nd inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th
inning, ripping a solo home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th inning and
banged out a one-base hit in the 8th inning.  Baltimore managed 14 in their
victory.  

The victory went to Boddicker(2-1) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. The
loss was charged to Jeff Russell(0-2).  He was knocked around by Baltimore,
allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.  

'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Rayford said. 'Whenever
I would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

Left fielder George Bell hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays
rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Kansas City Royals, 6 to
5.

Toronto came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2
runs on 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Tony Fernandez keyed the rally
when he doubled.  One out later, Bell came up and he slapped a base-hit.
Jesse Barfield then singled plating a run.  Cliff Johnson stepped in and he
drew a walk to load the bases.  Rance Mulliniks came to the plate and drew a
walk making Toronto the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.
Toronto ended up with 12 hits for the game while Kansas City had 8.  

Jim Acker(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Dan Quisenberry(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief.

Acker and Bell were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory.  As Bobby Cox noted, 'A win like this one can do
wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Houston took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 3rd inning plating an
isolated run utilizing 2 base hits.  Dave Smith pitched a perfect ninth to
earn his 4th save.  

Bob Knepper(2-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. The losing
pitcher was Jay Tibbs(0-3).  He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

Houston now has a record of 8-6.  Cincinnati has a record of 4-10, worst in
the division after the loss.

Rawley(2-1) was simply too much for the Montreal batters.  He allowed just 3
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.00 to 1.88.
Philadelphia had a total of 13 hits for the game.  

Bill Gullickson(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 11 hits and no
walks in 6 innings.  With this win, Philadelphia has a 4-9 record.  They have
been 3-7 lately.  With the loss, Montreal has a record of 5-5 lately, 8-5
overall.

got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.  Keith Moreland came up and
he doubled resulting in a run.  Jose Deleon then let a pitch get away from
him.  Leon Durham kept things alive and bombed a two-run dinger (his 4th of
the season).  Pittsburgh had 11 hits in the game while Chicago had 8, but
Chicago had the more timely hits.  

George Frazier(1-1) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Lee
Smith got the save, his 3rd.  Deleon(0-2) was given the loss.  He surrendered
4 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings.

no runs for the victory. Goose Gossage gained credit for his 5th save.  Rick

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants in 12 innings by a

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings.  Los Angeles came out on top in
the 12th inning.  Mike Marshall got things going when he drew a walk.
Mariano Duncan stepped into the batter's box and he tripled which scored a
run.  After an out was recorded, Ken Landreaux came up and he stroked a
base-hit bringing in another run.  Tommy Lasorda then called for a steal
which was successful.  Bill Russell came to the plate and lined a single, and
an error was also committed, scoring the final run of the inning.  Los
Angeles out-hit San Francisco for the game, 12 hits to 7.  

The winning pitcher was Bobby Castillo(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
The loss was charged to Greg Minton(1-1) in relief.  He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

New York erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning

the attack as he blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season).  After another
out, Wally Backman stepped up to the plate and he lashed a single.  Backman
took off for second and slid in with a stolen base.  Larry Bowa came up and
he delivered a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.  St. Louis
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  

Roger McDowell(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 and 1/3
innings. Kurt Kepshire(0-2) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings.  

Whitey Herzog was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game.  It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss.  It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

Juan Beniquez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the California Angels topped the
Oakland A's in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at ANAHEIM STADIUM.

in the 11th inning.  Brian Downing smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 1st
of the season) making California the victors to the delight of the home town

hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 5.93 to 4.37.  Chicago finished with
15 hits in the victory.

baserunners giving up 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

afternoon.

after the loss.

teams totaled 7 on the afternoon.

with the loss.  He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 2

Tom Browning pitched 7 and one third strong innings at The Astrodome where the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Houston Astros 2 to 1.

Houston fell behind quickly as the Cincinnati offense came through in the
first inning plating an isolated run.  Houston threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.  

The winning pitcher was Browning(1-3) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Ted Power earned his 4th save.  Nolan Ryan(3-1) was given the loss.  

Bob Lillis was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts.  If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

early scoring held up.  Overall Montreal out-hit Philadelphia 12 to 3.  

Joe Hesketh(2-0) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Charles
Hudson(0-3) was the loser.  He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3
innings.

Fontenot(2-1) delivered a fine performance for Fontenot.  He surrendered 8
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 5.84 to 3.38.  Although
they lost, Pittsburgh did out-hit Chicago 8 to 5.  

Rick Rhoden(0-3) ended up with the loss.  He allowed just 1 hit and 3 walks in
7 innings.

Eric Show tossed a complete game shutout at JACK MURPHY STADIUM as the San
Diego Padres beat the reeling Atlanta Braves by the count of 2 to
0.

Show(2-1) put on a good performance.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 7 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.33.  Atlanta had 7
hits in the game while San Diego had 3, but San Diego had the more timely
hits.  

Rick Mahler(1-2) suffered the loss.  With this win, San Diego has a 9-5
record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  Eddie Haas was pretty down after the
loss.  'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the
last week or two.  That won't get it done.'

LOS ANGELES AT SAN FRANCISCO

8,435 fans were treated to a fine game at CANDLESTICK PARK as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The San Francisco Giants registered
4 runs in the 12th inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

The score was tied at 3 after nine.  San Francisco came out the victor in the
16th inning.  Jeff Leonard doubled.  Alex Trevino came next and he delivered
a single giving San Francisco the victory and sending the 8,435 home-town
fans home happy.  San Francisco won despite being out-hit by Los Angeles 18
hits to 13.  

Atlee Hammaker(3-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Carlos Diaz(2-2) took the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 4 hits in
1 inning.  


NEW YORK AT ST. LOUIS

Andujar(3-0) was very good in the win.  He allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.87 to 3.70.  Neither team managed to score
after the 4th inning.  

The losing pitcher was Dwight Gooden(2-2).  He pitched 7 innings giving up 6
hits and no walks.

his pitcher, Haas, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon.  It
was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'

Carney Lansford went yard and scored 3 times as the Oakland A's defeated the
Minnesota Twins in 11 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at METRODOME.

The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Oakland came out the victor in the 11th
inning.  Tony Phillips started the inning off right when he delivered a
single, and an error was also committed.  Dave Collins stepped into the
batter's box and he lined a one-base hit.  Steve Henderson then doubled
plating a run.  After an out was recorded, Lansford stepped in and he laced a
base-knock, and an error was also committed, bringing in another run.  Bruce
Bochte came to the plate and drew a walk.  Mike Davis added to the uprising
and laced a base-hit, and an error was also committed, scoring the final run
of the inning.  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5
times.  

The win was credited to Jose Rijo(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Rijo got relief help from Jay Howell who gained credit for his 3rd save.
Pete Filson(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He couldn't find the strike zone
and allowed 5 walks in 2 innings.  

With this win, Oakland has a 7-9 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  With the
loss, Minnesota has a record of 7-3 lately, 10-6 overall.

6 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings.  Hurst chalked up 9 strikeouts
reducing his ERA from 5.71 to 4.68.  New York had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.  

Hurst got help from Bob Stanley who was credited with his 3rd save.  Joe
Cowley(2-1) was given the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 8 hits and 1
walk.

Left fielder Phil Bradley blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at The Kingdome as
the Seattle Mariners pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the California

Seattle erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits.  After two outs Ivan Calderon keyed the
rally when he lined a single.  Bob Kearney next to the plate and he banged
out a single.  Bradley then lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his
5th of the season) making Seattle victorious to the delight of the the home
town crowd.  Seattle had 11 hits overall, while California had 4.  

Jim Beattie(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Kirk
McCaskill(1-2) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 and
2/3 innings.

Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 3 to 1.

Los Angeles scored all of the necessary runs in the 1st inning scoring 3
runners on 3 hits.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  San Diego
threatened in the 9th but Los Angeles was able to put down the rally.

Hershiser(1-1), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Andy
Hawkins(2-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 3 runs and 5 hits in 6
innings.

ST. LOUIS AT MONTREAL

Ricky Horton finished beautifully as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the

St. Louis came up with 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits.  The
key at-bat was by Andy Van Slyke who disappointed the partisan crowd when he
doubled which was good for two runs.  St. Louis had a total of 12 hits for
the game.  

John Tudor(2-2) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Tudor was helped
out by Horton who recorded his 1st save.  David Palmer(1-2) was tagged with
the loss.

In a game for the baseball purist, Mario Soto(2-1) and Vida Blue(1-2) squared
off in a tense pitching duel, Cincinnati Reds finally emerged victorious over
San Francisco Giants, 2 to 1.

In the top of the 2nd inning Cincinnati went on top for good scoring a single
run.  After an out was recorded, Tony Perez hit a bases-empty home run (his
2nd of the season).  After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Ted Power recorded the save, his 5th.

who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled scoring two baserunners.
Milwaukee banged out 7 on the afternoon.  

The winning pitcher was Higuera(2-1) who allowed 1 run for the game. Dan
Petry(2-2) was charged with the loss.  He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 7 and
1/3 innings.

The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning. Rob Picciolo drew a walk.
Picciolo swiped second base.  Alfredo Griffin then laced a base-knock.
Oakland continued their aggressive style with another stolen base.  Carney
Lansford came to the plate and would hit into a fielders choice scoring the
run.  Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.  

Ontiveros(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Ron Davis(0-1) took the loss in relief.  Despite taking the
loss, he whiffed 6 batters in 3 and 1/3 innings.

walk.  Bradley was next and he cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the
season).  Seattle out-hit California for the game, 14 hits to 6.  

Roy Thomas(3-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Donnie
Moore(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1
inning.  

With this win, Seattle has a 8-9 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.  With the
loss, the California ballclub's record is 8-9.

Jimmy Key delivered 9 solid innings at ARLINGTON STADIUM as the Toronto Blue
Jays beat the Texas Rangers 4 to 0.

The game started off with Toronto taking the lead in the first scoring 2
runners on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.  Toronto had
a total of 10 hits for the game.  

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Key(2-0). The loss was charged to
Dickie Noles(1-1).  Despite the loss, he struckout 8 Toronto batters in 5 and
1/3 innings.  

Bobby Valentine was obviously impressed with the pitching of Key, 'That guy
made us look a little silly out there this afternoon.  We just couldn't get
to him at all - everything was working for him.  I just hope that he got that
kinda performance out of his system.'

Houston Astros won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over struggling Atlanta Braves at
The Astrodome pulling it out in their last at bats, 6 to 5.

The game was won by Houston with a run in the 9th inning.  After two were out
Terry Puhl delivered a one-base hit.  Craig Reynolds stepped into the
batter's box and he singled.  Glenn Davis then doubled resulting in an
exciting win for Houston and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans.  Houston managed 10 in their victory.  

The win went to Bill Dawley(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Jeff
Dedmon(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 3 hits in
1 and 2/3 innings.

St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Montreal went ahead in the 2nd
inning scoring a single run on 2 hits.  Herm Winningham slapped a single.
Winningham got a good lead and stole second.  Sal Butera then reached on an
error.  Scot Thompson was up next and he delivered a base-hit scoring the
run.  The early run support proved sufficient for Schatzeder and Montreal.
That was all the run support Schatzeder required.  Montreal ended up with 10
hits for the game while St. Louis had 7.  

Jeff Reardon was credited with his 7th save.

In a thriller the Pittsburgh Pirates staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the New York Mets by a score of 6 to 5 at SHEA
STADIUM.

Pittsburgh scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 4 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Jim Morrison
who silenced the stadium when he stroked a single which was good for two
runs.  Pittsburgh and New York each finished the afternoon with 9 hits.

Don Robinson(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Rod Scurry
recorded his 2nd save.  Jesse Orosco(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

Chuck Tanner was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence.  Weird. but GREAT!'

beat the Cleveland Indians by a score of 4 to 2.

Scott McGregor(2-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for McGregor.  He
was reached for 5 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop
from 5.66 to 4.85.  Overall Baltimore out-hit Cleveland 10 to 7.  

McGregor was helped out by Ken Dixon who recorded his 1st save.  Vern
Ruhle(1-3) was the loser.  He allowed 4 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.

Roger Clemens went the distance at FENWAY PARK where the Boston Red Sox beat

Clemens(2-0) gave Boston a solid outing.  He allowed just 8 hits and 2 walks
in 9 innings.  Kansas City had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came
up short.  

The losing pitcher was Danny Jackson(0-2).  He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 7
innings.

At COMISKEY PARK, the Chicago faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel.  Dennis Rasmussen(1-0) finally bested his Chicago counterpart, Floyd
Bannister(1-3), by the score of 3 to 1.

New York did all the necessary damage in the 1st inning when they scored 3
runs on 3 hits.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  After the 2nd
inning, neither team was able to score.  

Dave Righetti gained credit for his 8th save.  The loss was charged to
Bannister.  He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks.

DETROIT AT MILWAUKEE

Larry Herndon had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at COUNTY STADIUM where the Detroit
Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 4 to 3.

Detroit tallied 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits.
They would prove to be the difference in the contest.  Milwaukee threatened
in the 9th but their rally came up short.  

Randy O'Neal(1-1) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Willie
Hernandez earned the save, his 5th.  Bob Gibson(0-3) was charged with the
loss in relief.  

'We won because we did the little things right.' Sparky Anderson said after
the game.  'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we
get in close games we don't make mistakes.'

In a thrilling finish the Minnesota Twins won in dramatic fashion coming back
to beat the Oakland A's in 10 innings by the count of 9 to 8.

The score was tied at 7 after nine.  Minnesota won the game in the 10th
inning.  Kent Hrbek led off and he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded,
Gary Gaetti stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk.  Dave Engle then
banged out a single scoring a run.  Mark Salas was up next and he stroked a
one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Minnesota and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans.  This was the kind of game that many fans
love as the lead changed hands 5 times.  

The victory was credited to Pete Filson(1-1) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Jose Rijo(1-1) took the loss in relief.  By surrending 2 runs
in 1 inning his ERA jumped from 1.80 to 2.42.  


CALIFORNIA AT SEATTLE

Gorman Thomas rocketed 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI at The Kingdome as the Seattle
Mariners beat the California Angels by the count of 13 to 6.

Thomas enjoyed a great day at the plate.  He laced a single bringing in a run
in the 1st inning, belted a three-run homer in the 2nd inning and lofted a
three-run 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season) in the 5th inning.  Seattle
dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.  

Mark Langston(1-2) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 5 innings. Mike Witt(1-3)
ended up with the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits and 4 walks in 2
and 1/3 innings.  

Seattle now has a record of 9-9.  With the loss, the California ballclub's
record is 8-10.

TORONTO AT TEXAS

Garth Iorg had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays outscored the
struggling Texas Rangers 10 to 7.

The Texas fans didn't appreciate the big day Iorg had.  He singled which
scored a run in the 1st inning, hit a single in the 4th inning, doubled in
the 5th inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 1st of the season) in the 8th
inning.  For the game Toronto out-hit Texas 16 to 7.  

Dennis Lamp(5-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Tom
Henke earned his 5th save.  Chris Welsh(1-1) was tagged with the loss in
relief.  He was touched for 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings.

At The Astrodome the Atlanta Braves finally stopped their 8 slide with the
victory and easily handled the Houston Astros by the score of 5 to
1.

Atlanta took the lead for keeps in the top of the 3rd inning scoring a single
run using 3 hits.  Atlanta finished with 10 hits while Houston ended up with
5.  

The win went to Zane Smith(2-1) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings. Joe
Niekro(0-3) was the losing pitcher.  He gave up 9 hits and 6 walks in 7 and
1/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO AT LOS ANGELES

The San Diego Padres offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning
and had an easy time of it at DODGER STADIUM defeating the Los Angeles
Dodgers by a score of 10 to 3.

Tony Gwynn provided the offensive punch.  He lashed a single bringing in two
baserunners in the 4th inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 6th inning and
bombed a two-run dinger (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning.  Los
Angeles was out-hit by San Diego, 13 hits to 10.  

The victory went to Dave Dravecky(2-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Goose Gossage recorded the save, his 6th.  Rick Honeycutt(0-2) absorbed
the loss.  San Diego scored big getting 6 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings.

The San Diego ballclub's record now stands at 10-7.  With the loss Los Angeles
now has a record of 13-6.

ST. LOUIS AT MONTREAL

Montreal Expos won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over St. Louis Cardinals at
OLYMPIC STADIUM pulling it out in their last at bats, 3 to 2.

The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Terry Francona lined a
one-base hit.  Webster stole second with some aggressive base running.  Two
outs later Mike Fitzgerald came up and he ripped a base-knock making Montreal
the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.  Montreal had 9 hits
overall, while St. Louis had 5.  

Floyd Youmans(2-1) got the win allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Danny
Cox(1-1) was given the loss.  He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 9 hits
and 1 walk.


PITTSBURGH AT NEW YORK

Bill Almon had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings.  Pittsburgh won the
hard fought contest in the 13th inning.  After an out was recorded, Mike
Brown lined a base-hit.  Almon stepped up next and he doubled scoring the
run.  Pittsburgh had 11 hits for the afternoon.  

The win was credited to Rod Scurry(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no
runs. Pat Clements recorded his 2nd save.  Jesse Orosco(0-2) suffered the
loss in relief.

Philadelphia had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning when
they had 4 base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Schmidt who made
the Philadelphia fans a happy lot when he stroked a single which was good for
two runs.  Philadelphia had 16 hits for the game and Chicago had 5.  

Jerry Koosman(1-1) went 5 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Koosman got
help from Kent Tekulve who was credited with his 1st save.  Dick Ruthven(0-1)
suffered the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 4
innings.

San Francisco scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Ron Roenicke began the
rally when he doubled.  Alex Trevino next to the plate and he cracked a
two-run shot (his 2nd of the season) giving San Francisco the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd.  San Francisco out-hit Cincinnati for the
game, 13 hits to 10.  

Scott Garrelts(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 3 innings. Joe
Price(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and no

Eddie Murray cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Mike Boddicker completed the
game without help from the bullpen as the sizzling Baltimore Orioles beat the
Cleveland Indians by a score of 12 to 3.

The Baltimore fans enjoyed the offense provided by Murray.  He blasted a
two-run home run in the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 3rd
of the season) in the 5th inning and laced a base-knock in the 7th inning.
The Baltimore offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Boddicker(3-1) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Curt
Wardle(2-2) took the loss.  He surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 1 inning.

Baltimore extended their winning streak to 7 games.

KANSAS CITY AT BOSTON

Mike Easler had 4 hits as the Boston Red Sox outscored the Kansas City Royals
in 11 innings 8 to 5.

The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Boston was victorious in the 11th inning.
Wade Boggs opened up the inning nicely when he hit a single.  After an out
was recorded, Bill Buckner came to the plate and doubled.  Tony Armas then
lofted a three-run bomb (his 3rd of the season) giving Boston the victory as
37,295 happy fans celebrated wildly.  The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.  

The winning pitcher was Steve Crawford(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Mike Jones(1-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  The Boston
ballclub's record now stands at 13-5.  With the loss, Kansas City has a
record of 3-7 lately, 4-13, worst in the division overall.

Shortstop Bobby Meacham had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the New York Yankees won
in dramatic fashion over the Chicago White Sox by a score of 5 to 3 at
COMISKEY PARK.

New York came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3
hits.  After an out was recorded, Don Baylor started the rally when he drew a
walk.  Ron Hassey was next and he stroked a one-base hit.  Mike Pagliarulo
then doubled plating a run.  Meacham was up next and he stroked a single as
two more runners crossed the plate.  Meacham took second on the throw.  New
York ended up with 10 hits for the game while Chicago had 6.  

Rich Bordi(1-0) allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Juan Agosto(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 3
runs and 3 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.  

Tony LaRussa was not very talkative after his team's tough loss.  'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Billy Martin will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'

DETROIT AT MILWAUKEE

At COUNTY STADIUM the Detroit Tigers outscored the Milwaukee Brewers 7 to
4.

Willie Hernandez(1-1) pitched well in relief and was credited with the
victory.  He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and no walks in 4 and 1/3
innings.  Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.  

Randy O'Neal recorded the save, his 2nd.  Pete Vuckovich(0-2) absorbed the
loss.  He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Detroit now has a record of 10-7.  With the loss Milwaukee now has a record of
3-14, worst in the division.

OAKLAND AT MINNESOTA

Bert Blyleven tossed a complete game as the Minnesota Twins defeated the
Oakland A's 4 to 3 at METRODOME.

Minnesota went ahead for good in the 4th inning scoring one runner.  Oakland
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  

The win was credited to Blyleven(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
The loss was charged to Steve McCatty(0-3).  Jackie Moore was in a
contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind
of a game.  It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the
occasional blow-out loss.  It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt
so much - like this one!'

CALIFORNIA AT SEATTLE

Gorman Thomas homered and had 3 RBI at The Kingdome as the Seattle Mariners
pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the California Angels by the count of
7 to 6.

Seattle erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs using 3 hits.  Thomas started the inning off right when he
lined a single.  Al Cowens followed, but he was set down on strikes.  Dave
Henderson then delivered a one-base hit.  Ken Phelps came up and he rifled a
three-run blast (his 1st of the season) making Seattle the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  The game was a scoreless duel
until the 6th inning.  

Jim Beattie(2-0) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Donnie
Moore(0-2) was given the loss in relief.  He allowed 3 hits and no walks in
1/3 of an inning.

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the reeling Texas Rangers by a score of 5 to 2
at ARLINGTON STADIUM.

Texas lost it in the 5th inning when Toronto did all their damage when they
scored 5 runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by George Bell who
silenced ARLINGTON STADIUM as he emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun
(his 5th of the season).  The Texas bats were silent in the bottom of the
9th.  

Dave Stieb(4-0) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Tom
Henke earned the save, his 6th.  Burt Hooton(1-2) was tagged with the loss.
He gave up 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work.

Phil Garner had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Dave Smith stopped Atlanta cold as
the Houston Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves by a score of 6 to 3 at The
Astrodome.

Houston had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the
help of 4 hits.  After an out was recorded, Jose Cruz began the Houston spurt
when he laced a one-base hit.  After another out, Denny Walling came to the
plate and laced a single which scored a run.  Walling took second on the
throw.  Mark Bailey then was walked intentionally.  Garner followed and he
slapped a base-hit plating one more runner.  Terry Puhl stepped into the box
and laced a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.  Frank Dipino(4-1)
was helped out by Smith who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 6th
save.  

Terry Forster(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs
in 1 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.60 to 7.11.

Bob Welch(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Welch.  He was reached for 4
hits and 3 walks in 6 innings lowering his ERA to 2.45.  San Diego was
out-hit by Los Angeles, 9 hits to 4.  

Bobby Castillo was credited with his 2nd save.  The losing pitcher was Mark
Thurmond(0-2).  He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.

ST. LOUIS AT MONTREAL

Kurt Kepshire blanked Montreal allowing just 2 hits at OLYMPIC STADIUM as the
St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 4 to
0.

Kepshire(1-2) escaped virtually unscathed against the Montreal hitters. He
gave up just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings improving his ERA from 5.29 to
3.46.  St. Louis totaled 9 on the afternoon.  

Bill Gullickson(0-3) was the loser.  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 3
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  'When Kepshire is on like that it is a tough
game to play, no doubt about it,' Buck Rodgers said. 'He always pitches well
against us.'

PITTSBURGH AT NEW YORK

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, New York Mets came from
behind to top Pittsburgh Pirates, 2 to 1.

New York had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 4 base hits.  Keith Hernandez led off the inning for New York when
he doubled.  Gary Carter came next and he banged out a single.  Danny Heep
then doubled bringing in a run.  Clint Hurdle was up next and he smacked a
single giving New York the win much to the delight of the home town crowd.
New York out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 9 hits to 6.  

Tom Gorman(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Cecilio
Guante(1-2) suffered the loss in relief.  Davey Johnson was in great spirits
in his post-game interview.  Yet, when asked about his feelings after the
thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know
how my counterpart, Chuck Tanner, feels right now - and it's not very good.
It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!'

CHICAGO AT PHILADELPHIA

In a game for the baseball purist, Dennis Eckersley(4-0) and Kevin Gross(1-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Chicago Cubs finally emerged victorious
over Philadelphia Phillies, 3 to 1.

Philadelphia fell behind quickly as the Chicago offense came through in the
first inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits.  That was all the offense
they were to need.  Chicago managed 9 in their victory.  

Warren Brusstar got the save, his 1st.

CINCINNATI AT SAN FRANCISCO

Third baseman Nick Esasky had 4 hits and 3 RBI at CANDLESTICK PARK where the
Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 8 to 2.

Esasky was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors.  He smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of
the season) in the 1st inning, slapped a one-base hit in the 5th inning,
stroked a base-hit in the 7th inning and doubled resulting in a run in the
8th inning.  Cincinnati finished with 15 hits while San Francisco ended up
with 7.  

The win went to Tom Browning(2-3) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. John Franco
earned his 1st save.  Atlee Hammaker(3-1) ended up with the loss.  By giving
up 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings his ERA increased from 2.84 to 3.91.  

With this win, Cincinnati has a 7-12 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.  With
the loss, the San Francisco ballclub's record is 10-8.
