The good news is they return 4 starters. The bad news is their new players aren't very good. PG Murray is the best incoming player, and he's a walk-on who is suspended. Their best Post defender PF Stevens (62/A) will be taking a shirt this year. I don't have high hopes for a much better season. Code:

And they really didn't get it. Walker Tuggle is the highest rated of the FOFC recruits, but won't immediately help with what they need. I look more to C Joe Fisher, a ** recruit who has a bit of an inside game and is a solid rebounder. My guess is another season of ugly basketball with a few surprise upsets sprinkled in. Code:

Thielen and Swett should be able to contribute immediately. They also have a very young team and will certainly return all 5 starters next season. The missed opportunity is a big man with offensive skills. Harris scored 15 ppg last season due solely to quickness. A C/PF with some INS would be hard to stop. Code:

January Update
Hartford (7-7, 2-0), RPI: 98th The Hawks had an uneven start to the season, with a nice win against Rutgers and a terrible loss to Delaware State. The good news is ending the month with two conference wins. Pace continues his excellence with 16.2 ppg and Tibbets adds 12.7 ppg off the bench. Code:

After starting off 4-2, the Owls have dropped 8 straight games, although a few were against tough competition. In fact, they came very close to beating #11 Virginia, holding a 14 pt halftime lead only to fall apart in the final minute. As expected, Octavio Jones has been great so far, with 16.9 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Code:

Not a good start for the Vikings, but they have played a tough schedule. Hopefully, they can take advantage of the easier conference schedule. Gravely leads the way with 13.7 ppg. Code:

The defense hasn't been quite as good as last season, but maybe that'll change with conference play. Charleston Southern broke a 5 game losing streak to win 3 consecutive conference games. Freshman PF Fisher has performed well, with 7.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Code:

The Cardinals opened the season with a big win against Auburn and ran their record up to 5-1. Then they fell apart and lost 6 in a row, including their 1st two conference games of the year. The loss to Texas A&M CC is particularly bad. Not a single starter is averaging double digit ppg. Code:

More inconsistent play puts Hartford right back to where they were last season - a .500 team. They lead the nation in Assists and FG%, but have one of the worst defenses in the nation, giving up 74.5 ppg. Code:

The Hawks fall to 5-7 in conference play before pulling off a major upset of Vermont, thanks to 29 pts off the bench from Merle Tibbetts. Still a mystery as to why Tibbetts isn't starting. They enter the conference tourney with the same 8-8 record as last season. Code:

After hitting a season low point in a 67-60 loss to McNeese State, Lamar closes the regular season with 6 consecutive victories to once again become the cream of the FOFC crop. And they've done it with only one double digit scorer (Harris at 10.8ppg). Code:

Alright, it's conference tourney time! Can anyone unlock that 2nd skill?
America East 1st round: (4) Hartford vs. (5) New Hampshire The Hawks are fortunate to play a team they beat twice in the regular season. They play one of their best games of the season and run away with it. Solid performances from their young Guard trio. Code:
2nd round: (4) Hartford vs. (1) Albany How do you shoot .551 from the field and still manage to lose? Well you commit 26 turnovers and 26 fouls. Albany is just too good here, running away with a massive 115 pts. Code:

1st round: (3) Kennesaw State vs. (6) Lipscomb Kennesaw State picks the worst time to have a cold shooting night, hitting only 7 of 23 from 3 pt range. This, combined with their inability to get stops on defense, leads them to an incredibly disappointing exit from the conference tourney against a team they'd beaten twice by double digits. Code:

1st round: (10) Portland State vs. (7) North Dakota The Vikings continue their late season semi-resurgence with a nice upset win against North Dakota. James and Gravely combine for 29 pts and the defense holds ND to .353 from the field. Code:
2nd round: (10) Portland State vs. (2) Montana And the good run ends against a very talented Montana team. Montana's defense prevents any Vikes player from scoring double digits and forces 20 turnovers. Code:

1st round: (10) Charleston Southern vs. (7) Campbell Behind the surprising performance of Jim Kowalczyk (an SF playing PG), the Bucs manage their highest point total of the season. C Joe Fisher nearly managed a double-double. Code:
2nd round: (10) Charleston Southern vs. (2) High Point The Bucs played a spirited game, taking a 2 pt lead at the half and leading as late as 10 minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, their propensity for turnovers and fouling doomed them in the final minutes. Code:

2nd round: (4) Lamar vs. (5) SE Louisiana Lamar gets a 1st round bye thanks to Soutland's odd tourney system. They take advantage by coming out hot and leading for most of the game. A pair of Charles Kelly free throws gives them an 8 pt lead with 2:16 left. But SE Louisiana fights back by hitting three consecutive shots to pull within 2. Lamar tuns it ove with 32 seconds left, but SE Louisiana misses the game tying jumper. Code:
3rd round: (4) Lamar vs. (1) Stephen F. Austin A matchup of Lamar's #12 ranked defense and SFA's #1 ranked defense unsurprisingly resulted in a low scoring affair. Despite getting blown out by 19 pts against SFA earlier in the season, Lamar puts up a tough fight, staying within single digits in the 1st half. With 14 minutes left and SFA leading 30-23, Lamar goes on a 9-1 run to take the lead. The rest of the game is very close, but Lamar's Freshmen Swett and Thielen come up huge in the final 19 seconds to steal a victory from 26-4 Stephen F. Austin!! Code:
Conference Championship: (4) Lamar vs. (6) Texas A&M CC The Cardinals are fortunate to get the #6 seed instead of the far more dangerous Sam Houston State. Still, TAMU CC puts up a good fight and the game was tied with 7:42 left. The Cards C William Adamson, starting in place of leading scorer James Harris, comes up big in keying a 13-1 run to close out the game. The Cardinals win the conference tourney and are on their way to the NCAA tourney!!! Code:

Note: I realize that I never clarified what happens if a team makes the First Four. Since that is the situation Lamar is in right now, here's how it will be handled:
1) Making the field of 68 will qualify for unlocking the 2nd skill. 2) The 3rd skill will only be unlocked with a victory in the round of 64. The 2nd rule is so teams don't get punished for being a little bit better and getting a 15 seed. Having said all of that, Chas in Cinti may now pick a 2nd skill. It will be applied at the start of next season.

(16) Lamar vs. (1) North Carolina Lamar's reward for their excellent late season play? A matchup against #1 North Carolina. Not a good group of recruits. Prairie View definitely did well, but skill boosts might make a difference for the othe schools.

Season Preview 2023-24
Team: Hartford AD: DavidCorperial Head Coach: Rod McCollum (92 Rec, 16 Sct, 8 Off, 64 Def) Recruiter: Conrad Campos (33 Rec) Scout: Jefferson Potter (34 Sct) Assistant: James Graham (23 Off, 38 Def) Team Budget: 170,000 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record Key Returning Players: SG William Pace (2 time FOFC POTY), PG Merle Tibbets, SG Edwin Quarles, SF Douglas Hudson Key Incoming Players: C Charles Flynt, PF John Beasley Prestige: 8 (+5) Outlook: Can they finally put it together? I keep thinking the Hawks will turn the corner, but their inconsistent play has prevented them from taking that next step. They have a solid group of Guards to work with, but the lack of an inside presence has hurt them. They have a new C and PF coming in, but one is a one dimensional scorer and the other a one dimensional defender. Will that be enough? Code:

Season Preview
Team: Kennesaw State AD: law90026 Head Coach: Charles Sandy (63 Rec, 31 Sct, 63 Off, 23 Def) Recruiter: Charles Prosser (33 Rec) Scout: David Unruh (34 Sct) Assistant: Scott Castellanos (26 Off, 35 Def) Team Budget: 163,612 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record. Key Returning Players: SG Octavio Jones, PG Devin Hoover Key Incoming Players: SG Edouard Ducourouble (JUCO), SF Joe Sims Prestige: 7 (+5) Outlook: The Owls were the big surprise last season, improving by 5 wins in conference play behind star JUCO SG Octavio Jones. Well, there's every reason to believe they'll be even better. Along with Jones, they return solid PG Hoover and have two exciting new recruits. SG Ducourouble (another JUCO find) is even better than Jones, and Freshman SF Sims should be able to contribute immediately. They still lack big men in the middle, but they should put up a ton of points this season. Code:

Season Preview
Team: Portland State AD: Young Drachma Head Coach: Hilton Starks (21 Rec, 40 Sct, 68 Off, 51 Def) Recruiter: Barton Kerrigan (33 Rec) Scout: Chris Burris (33 Sct) Assistant: James Manchester (27 Off, 34 Def) Team Budget: 155,000 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record Key Returning Players: SG Ferdinand James, SF Robert Gravely, PG Antione Mauney Key Incoming Players: PF Lonny Locke (JUCO) Prestige: 2 Outlook: The Vikings made a nice run at the end of the year, showing some promise after dismal early results. And they may have finally got the player they've been looking for in PF Lonny Locke, a versatile scorer who can play defense and handle the ball. I hope they move him to SF. It'll be interesting to see if they let PG Antione Mauney play. Despite being a walk-on, he's their best PG, but only played in one game after last season's suspension. Mauney and Locke could provide the turnaround that Portland State needs. Code:
