At this point, why not go for 100? Set a record that will *never* be broken.

In 23 minutes the final set alone will have gone on longer than the previous longest match ever. Mad. 53-52 Isner

My favorite comment from when I was watching the Pulse - someone asked if there are any possible single's records this match won't break. The moderator's response: "Quickest match"

5th set is now the longest match ever on its own.

John McEnroe has just been on - apparently the winner of this has to play his next match tomorrow. I think time to back their opponent

I think around 9pm local time, according to the guy who was chatting on ESPN.com about 90 minutes or so ago.

That's what I was saying a couple of hours ago - I'm betting the house on their opponent.

They would play third on this same court tomorrow.

To be fair, their opponent tomorrow also had a pretty long match today - granted nothing compared to this match, but still.

Wouldn't it be funny if the winner of this match showed up tomorrow like "I just spent ten hours to win a freaking tennis match; no way am I going home now" and won the thing in straight sets?

What happens if this game does roll over into tomorrow? Would their match be pushed back to the following day or would they potentially finish this one and have to start their next match later in the day?

Yikes.

Hope these guys have access to some good trainers. I'd imagine no matter how good their gear is they've got to have some pretty nice blistering going on now, never mind how they're going to feel in the morning.

Dola,

the comments on the Yahoo update feed have someone who's saying that the American is also in the doubles bracket. Wonder how his partner feels?

There's a betting shop about 150 yards from my house - never been in before, but just nipped down to see if I could bet on de Bakker tomorrow. Not listed as these two are still playing. Doh!

This is an excellent point. This match may very well end when one of their bodies just gives out.

But it's 59-59 now, and Mahut is lobbying for an end to the day's play.

Yep, 1x six hours ago, 2x three hours ago, and this one.

Now 59-59 and just suspended due to darkness

Edit - undola - play suspended. A 10-hour game remains tied. The second day in a row that the game ended through bad light - but this is the first time that's ever happened without a break!

Back to the WC!

Odds on one of these guys winning it tomorrow morning either by default (one guy not being able to physically continue) or within 10 minutes? Really too bad they couldn't have finished tonight, almost any finish tomorrow will end up being anti climatic.

To put things into more perspective: these two guys played more games than Serena Williams did last season in all seven of her games en route to the singles title.

Thiemo de Bakker is actually coming of a 5-setter himself. Also suspended on Tuesday right after the 4th set. Biggest difference being his 5th set was 'only' 16-14...

Any other year people would go all in to bet against him.

From what I heard, that match was supposed to be this afternoon. I'd have to imagine no matter who wins this match, they won't be playing anymore than they have to.

Can someone explain tennis scoring to me? I thought when a set went 6-6, the tiebreaker game was the first to a certain number of points (and win by 2 pts), but this is apparently GAMES in the 5th set?...

At Wimbeldon they don't have a tie-break in the final set.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that Wimbledon is the only GS that doesn't have a 5th set tiebreak.

The ESPN article on the front page says the French and Australian also don't have 5th set tiebreakers, so presumably the US Open does.

My google-fu found several forums and websites that say the US Open is the only one that uses the 5th set tiebreaker, the other three play to someone wins by 2.

I found this on SBNation. As the person there puts it, see if you can find the point at which the Guardian blogger seems to slide off the deep end. He makes passing references to the "marathon match" when it's 5-5 and his focus is on bigger matches at the 2:45 timestamp entry, but slowly and surely you see him pulled into the maelstrom after that.
