Steep, but apparently the dropoff after pick five (or six, depending on Filatov) was a big one.

Yeah, because Sather didn't sign him (thanks to Burke not signing him).

Just got home. The Sabres picked up 6'7'' D Tyler Myers. Any thoughts on him? Why did they trade up one spot? What did they give up?

I'd have much rather had Camalleri straight up than two low first rounders in a weak draft. Another odd move by Burke, unless he's trying to get fired so he can go to the Leafs.

A weak draft? Isn't this suppose to be one of the deepest drafts in quite some time?

Cammalleri is a good offensive player, but he's only a one-way player and doesn't really help a team like the Kings as much who have weak goaltending. And he was unhappy and out of here after the season anyway. He's a better fit on the Flames, and it was a good move for them.

Best development system any of the major four leagues too. I don't even mean the minors, but the juniors, international and all of that, there are ample places for players to go to get high quality talent to play and to develop. Teams may still rush players, but there isn't a real need to as much as in the other sports.

Not as much hype and press coverage in the US for players coming up, helps blot out the white noise too.

The Hockey News draft preview called the Kings' search for a goalie the "40-year Search for a #1", lol.

And, finally, my God...let's have the NHL go the NFL route, and the commissioner just makes the pick and trade announcement, rather than these neverending blathering speeches from team reps!

The Kings actually have some solid young netminder talent in the system, but none of them have proven they are ready yet.

Well, not a weak draft, actually. By most reports the deepest draft in years. And we can't fit Cammy under our cap anyway and expect to keep Perry. I would rather have Perry.

BTW, the Niedermayer clan got one bigger tonight. Scotty and wife Lisa have #4, Luke Scott Niedermayer. Future team captain in the making.

So Burke traded again, and now has three second rounders to go with three third rounders. The goal is to end up with 500 ninth round picks.

Doesn't he realize he'll only play Pittsburgh like once/twice a year now?

Also PING duff88-

Thoughts on Jared Staal? I keep seeing things about him being as talented as the othe brothers, but I just don't see it.

Jared could be worth a 6th-7th round pick. The thing about being more talented started when his father said the best of the brothers was the youngest, but he was actually talking about Jordan and it kinda started a huge misunderstanding.

Jared is huge, but he's an awful skater. That said, he got better through the year and I think he may have what it takes to be a journeyman. But his skating is really bad.

EDIT: Staal got picked by Phoenix right as I was posting this. Here's a website to follow the upcoming rounds:

Jared Staal has a chance. It wouldn't be the first time a player was drafted more because of his bloodline than what he has demonstrated so far.

Thanks guys...one more.

Any sleeper types you like who will be around late rounds, since the Pens don't have a pick until the 4th round.

And this cracked me up, the Isles pick of Petrov--

NY Islanders (from Edmonton via NY Islanders, Edmonton, Anaheim)

So EDM and NYI each held this pick twice?!

No, he hasn't. Burke gave him a deadline of the draft, but then extended it through the weekend because of Scotty's kid being born. So expect to hear a decision Monday.

Teemu is also expected to provide an answer by free agency (although Burke can't compel him like Nieds, as Teemu is technically an UFA), and Nieds decision will likely again impact Teemu's decision.

Lot of run in's on and off the ice. He is basically Sean Avery lite. He will take cheap shots, start a lot of fights and talk a lot of shit. His most renowned incident was calling a kid born with curveature of the spine a Hunchback. He said he didn't know he had a disease and apologized for it but it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

That kid was Milan Lucic. I can't wait for Lucic to beat Beach's ass this season.

Sounds like a guy who will be pummeled regularly in the NHL.
