We have regular sales tax (6%) on car purchases. This is an annual tax on the value of the cars you own.

Illinois just has an annual registration fee of $165, I think. I'm actually pretty surprised they haven't come up with the idea of an annual tax on cars, since they're pretty committed to taxing the fuck out of everything normally.

Connecticut does that.

Long story short, when I was 23-24 I lived there about 18 months. Had no idea there was a tax. Move away and on with my life. 11 years later I get a bill from collections for past due, including interest, totaling just over 10K.

I actually think there is a thread about it somewhere around here.

dola- So I just glanced through the old thread. Fun trip down memory lane about being screwed out of 10K. Was nice to see some posts from long gone members.

One of the themes was I was going to take my story to the media, and I did. I constructed an entire presentation with timelines, scans, etc...and sent it to every national media group as well as local media.

I sent it when I got to work that morning. An hour later a coworker pops into my office and says "hey, did you see that a bunch of kids got shot at a school in Connecticut?"

Needless to say my story likely got ignored for obvious reasons. I took it as a sign that yes, paying the money sucked, but there were a lot of families in CT that day having a far worse day then I will hopefully ever have, so I went home and hugged my kids and left it there.

Pretty car. Looks like they got rid of that god awful grill (really wish they would give up on that feature).

Next-Gen Lexus RC Will Be Developed alongside GT3 Race Car
Quote:
While the Lexus RC—first introduced back in 2014—is a sharp-looking car, the coupe has always been a bit on the porky side. That extra weight not only affects the road car's performance but has also hampered the car’s motorsports efforts in the GT3 class. At the Daytona 500 last week, Car and Driver spoke with Toyota Racing Development president David Wilson and learned that we may not have to wait much longer for a more dynamic next-generation Lexus coupe built with a focus on racing.

For whatever reason, I find this car attractive. Weird how my tastes range from a 400z to a VW bus. No pricing or range in the article.

My folks had a VW microbus when I was under 5. I believe it was orange. An all-electric VW microbus? I'll be very, very tempted.

There’s def potential in the electric cargo van, but of course range, access to chargers, etc would be key issues.

Washington has an annual registration fee that's based partly on the estimated value of the vehicle. I just got hit with a $400 registration fee for the Bronco Sport I bought a year ago.

Ended up with an “LOLOL there was never a list” situation from the Frod dealer and got a Sorrento SX Premium instead. Of course gas spiked 2 weeks later.

Moral of the story is I would double check how valid your reservation is. They’ll just sell your truck for 8K more if it ends up being non vaporware. Although I guess you ordered a non hybrid so maybe you’ll get it.

Bottom line is C&D found the Z underwhelming.

Even before this economic downturn, I was not planning to be an early adopter and wasn't all bought into the new Z look (that front grill still looks weird to me). So maybe in 2-3 years time after the refresh.

Tested: 2023 Nissan Z Performance Doesn't Reach Far Enough

It's an attractive proposition on paper and at first glance, but, as it turns out, the 2023 Nissan Z is not the budget world-beater Z-cars have been in the past. Budget does seem to be the operative word here, but in this case it applies to Nissan management, which obviously didn't allocate enough of one to thoroughly shake up the segment. There's too much 370Z in the new Z, and it could use better tires and more intelligent multimode dampers. This was not the seismic shift we were hoping for.

What was interesting to me in that article was the price tag. $53k was much less than I thought it would be. The one Z car I saw at on floor display a couple of years ago was $80k. Did they drop the price point on them?
Related topic, my wife sat in a 2032 Corvette C8 the other day. A regular patient of hers was showing it off. It was the top level trim, and cost him about $73k. He had ordered it and waited nine months to get it. Could turn it around now for $100k pretty easily. She said it was amazing.

The very base model is low $40k and the $53k is the high end. I didn't think older Zs went to $80k unless it was a tricked out Nismo or like.

I really wanted to love the new Corvette but it looks way too much like "look at me, I'm a Transformer". I prefer something a little more sedate looking.

Followup article from C&D comparing the Z and 3 other cars. Not pretty, see report card at 2nd half of article.

All that build up for the past year just to be ... mediocre.

I am hoping to be buying a truck in the next couple of months. I would have really live to buy a Maverick, but I doubt I am going to find one. I refuse to pay 8-10k over sticker which seems to be the going rate. Probably end up in a Tocoma, Frontier, or a Ranger. I checked my trade in for my car, and the Carmax offer has increased 6k since February. That is just insane.

Day 4 of driving a Bolt EUV and I almost noobed getting home. Pulling in at 13% full is pushing it way too far. There’s zero chargers for miles. I’m sure eventually that will change.

Ended up buying a SUV. Not exactly what I wanted, but buying used trucks is just tough. Carvanna has a deal where they show the original sticker for their used vehicles. Trucks are selling basically at the sane price they cost new, and dome cases more. I finally gave up and searched SUV with tow packages. Much easier to find and buy.

Good strategy, end of month. Assume you got a good deal?

I've been monitoring truecar.com. At one time, a Corolla was several thousand premium over MSRP. Now, its about same as MSRP. So assume prices are getting better?

For some cars. I was shopping used, and it looks like for cars things are stabilizing. Still hardly any new inventory, but there are definitely more cars and suv's than trucks. Most of the new inventory is at the upper end trims.
As for the deal, I went Carmax. No hassle, they gave me 2k over what one of the dealerships offered on my car.

For the past couple trade-ins, I've gone to CarMax to get their quote/bid.

I then take it to the car dealership I'm buying from and they've always matched.

(I kinda feel bad using CarMax that way)

I have as well. Carvanna actually does even higher (and Driveway much higher than that), but because I ended up buying at Carmax it made more sense going with them. I didn't have to pay the sales tax I would have if I just sold it without trading. That was almost $1,000.

As a follow up, I returned the SUV today. In the end, it just wasn't what I wanted. Carmax made very easy. Signed one paper and got a check back immediately. I would definitely recommend getting a vehicle from them.
I am now at a crossroads of deciding if I am going for a much cheaper beater truck, or bite the bullet on something newer and end up with payments.

That is definitely my lean. But 10-13k is real money to me, and it is hard to give that for a truck 15 years old and 200k miles. That seems to be the beater truck market (if I want something that runs). I'm shocked at the number of $13k trucks that have salvage titles. Like, really?

The beater truck market is utterly stupid. Like a 2011 ridgeline with 150K miles is around 13-15k. That thing is likely a timebomb with several expensive repairs due within 50K miles. And even moreso up here in Pennsylvania where everything is salted up.

But that is a pretty good price compared to some other. A 2011 Tocoma with that many miles I am seeing listed at 20k+.

I've got 120k in my 2007. My guess is somewhere about $5K.

But it runs fine so probably hang on to it until it dies (or until the Z gets a better face lift in 2-3 years).

So, as the final line in my truck hunt saga: I bought a 2016 Chevy Colorado. It has 133k miles on it, and I got it for $11,800. Funny enough, I bought it from a business competitor. It was a fleet truck, and came with a really nice Leer camper shell. That probably saved me 1800-2000 dollars on it's own. I'm probably still going to put a couple of grand in it fixing it up to my liking, but it was a bargin at that price.

I shudder at the type of financial shenanigans they’ll use to sell this low mileage late model nissan. The Altima is a meme car for 30% APR and horrible driving recently.

For those with EVs, have you noticed how bad windshield fluid smells? It’s super unpleasant and I never noticed this before when I had an ICE car. It’s also possible the kind I have is just ultra stinky.

Parts supply is still a dumpster fire. I wrote about my car accident in the college FB thread, and when State Farm towed it from the lot on Monday to the shop they assigned it to, the shop refused to accept it because of capacity. So the tow company brought it to my house and left it. Called State Farm, and it took us going through 4 of 10 authorized shops close by to find one who would take it - in 2 weeks.

We had just looked at trading in this car because it was still way above what I would expect that car to be worth (for a Nissan) 3 years later. We googled the 2023 Pathfinder because it's a new model, and the same trim we have now is $12K more - about $8K in MSRP and the rest in mark-up. Now, with damage, we won't even get the benefit of the high trade value, even if we wanted to trade up.

We don't use different windshield fluid for our EV. Honestly, I've never smelled much of anything when I've opened a jug of windshield wiper fluid.
