Yeah, we're getting screwed over by taxes much more than you guys, but still, three weeks ago, the price at the pump was at 0.914cdn per litre, or roughly 3.00us per gallon, that's still a solid 33% increase, per litre or per gallon

I remember seeing $.79 gas in 1998, I think. I was taking the Greyhound from Abilene to Denver for Christmas and I saw gas for that price somewhere in the middle of the Texas panhandle (gas was around $.83 in Abilene)...

Yeah, gas prices were crazy underpriced! I mean, compare it to the inflation rate from 1950 or something and we were paying hardly anything for a gallon!

It looks like we're finally just about at the late 70s price of gas, adjusted for inflation (and we're paying about 1/3 more than they paid in the 50s, adjusted for inflation.)

I know very little about you, but that has to be the wisest decison you've ever made.

$2.81 today. I work for the government, so I net a decent amount of money based on my mileage reimbursement for travel. That makes paying the high prices for all other travel a lot easier to handle.

Reminds me of how I always thought it was funny when people are shocked that I simply don't care about going to a station where gas is $.05/gallon cheaper, even if it's right across the street.

I've done a cost-benefit analysis on it and determined I actually make more money by going to the more expensive station.

Yep, I always go to the station right on my route home from work, regardless what price they have. People can get pretty stupid driving their Suburbans or F350 all over town trying to find cheaper gas.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that the high gas prices are going to hurt you later on in the form of EVERY SINGLE THING you buy.

This weekend it rose to the equivalent of $US4.16 a gallon here (incidentally it's 3.8 litres to a US gallon).

What pisses me off are the politicians who claim they can do nothing about it when the tax is a percentage of the wholesale price - as the gas price rises so do the taxes. They even double dip - a tax on the fuel and a sales tax on that which means the tax rises as the square of the tax rate

I don't know how it works down-under, but I am pretty sure that over here the gas tax is based on a per gallon scale.

You are correct, with the exception (I believe) of some states that apply their general sales tax to gasoline (on top of the usual per-gallon tax rates).

My rudimentary analysis:

There's a gas station that would require a left turn (Station A), and one that would require a right turn (Station B).

A is $0.10 lower than B. Therefore, on a 10-gallon fillup, I save $1.00 using A.

However, there's clearly a greater risk for an accident at that station A. For our purposes, we'll set the chances of a "significant" accident at A as 1/1000. At B, given that it's a right turn, there is negligible major risk.

We'll say that a "significant" accident all-told costs $2000 (deductible, medical bills, lost salary, etc.).

With those assumptions, the fillup at A actually costs $2 extra per fillup.

Whatever, doesn't matter. My point is there are so many other minor expenses that people don't consider, the price of gas is ridiculous to get up in a furor over.

What is the typical assessment of a value of people's recreational time? I'm not in the transportation field so I don't know what they use but my guess is $10/hr (+/i).

If turning left takes an extra 3 minutes that's $0.50 per fillup.

Again, just commenting how dumb it is for people to fret over fractions of percents difference in prices.

I saw on the local news, a year or so ago, someone talking about how they drove all the way across town because gas was $0.08 (or something like that) cheaper there.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying but I think you are neglecting factors to put things in your favor. For instance, saying there's a 1 in 1000 chance of an accident turning left. That neglects that there's probably a 1 in 2000 chance of your right turn or whatever that percentage is. Or your idling and turning calculation is one side of the ledger but you don't include the other side of the ledger where going to the other station has a better way of getting to the street that you want or that you've advanced further in your path home and thus have spent some of that gas, not needlessly but in an attempt to move forward.

But I'm just having fun playing with this as a numerical experiment, tho secretly I think you're just trying to justify a little laziness and look down your nose at bargain hunters as a side

Not trying to start a political discussion, but I would think a similar graph could be made for the reciprical of US causualties in Iraq vs. his approval rating. I also didn't remember that gas was that cheap around 9/11/01, but I would assume the graph is correct.
