RL's Best Batter Picked
Thursday, September 1st, 1994: Free agent-to-be Augusto Álvarez has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In August, the 34-year-old Virginia Beach first baseman hit .359 with 5 home runs and 23 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

Álvarez on the season is hitting .304 with 21 home runs. His stats include 108 RBIs and 115 runs scored.

August's Best CL Hitter is Ronnie Moss

Thursday, September 1st, 1994: Ronnie Moss picked up the top batter prize in the Continental League for August.

The Chicago left fielder hit .322 with 7 home runs, 30 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He also drew 12 walks to post an OBP of .385.

This season Moss is batting .247 with 32 home runs. His totals include 101 RBIs and 87 runs scored.

Rookie Reels In Republic League Award
Thursday, September 1st, 1994: Nazario Garrone was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old shortstop definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen August's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 26 games Garrone batted .323 for Portland, slapping 30 hits in 93 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 18 runs and scored 17 times.

This year Garrone is hitting at a .232 pace with 11 home runs and 70 RBIs. He has played in 132 games and scored 66 times.

Top Rookie of the Month Named by CL
Thursday, September 1st, 1994: Hal Jones earned August's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Balzac right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Jones hit .327 with 2 home runs, 18 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

In the current season, Jones has put up a .312 batting average with 138 hits, 13 home runs, 68 RBI and scored 80 runs.

Catanzara Joins Kings of Clout with #300
Sunday, September 4th, 1994: The New York Legends defeated the Portland Axemen 10-5 yesterday in a game that featured Gioacchino Catanzara's 300th career home run.

In the clubhouse, the Legends center fielder spoke about the milestone achievement. "To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

On his historic day, Catanzara banged out 1 hit in 2 at-bats and scored 1 run with 2 RBI.

Catanzara has a career .318 batting average and .368 on-base percentage. He has recorded 2240 hits with 458 doubles, 66 triples, 300 homers, 1233 RBIs and scored 1225 runs since coming into the league.

Saldaña Tosses Shutout for Cleveland
Saturday, September 10th, 1994: Alfredo Saldaña of the Cleveland Naps was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Portland Axemen with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 36-0 shutout.

In the postgame comments, the Portland skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Cleveland hurler had 11 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Saldaña told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."

This season-to-date Saldaña has 11 wins and 6 losses and a 3.56 ERA.

36 to nothing... Cleveland must have gone for a 2 point conversion after one of their touchdowns I guess.

Maricopa's Navarro Hammers #400
Thursday, September 15th, 1994: "I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Alfonso Navarro told reporters after he made baseball history today at Legends Ballpark. The prolific slugger belted home run #400 in the Maricopa Rattlers 4-1 victory over the New York Legends.

The standout shortstop collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Navarro. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

Navarro is hitting .269 during his 1925-game career. He has 1840 hits, 217 doubles, 31 triples, 400 home runs, 1323 RBIs, 157 stolen bases and 1268 runs scored.

#400 for Dunbar
Sunday, September 18th, 1994: Shawn Dunbar circled the bases and raised his arm in triumph. He had finally hit his 400th home run. It was a homer for a lot of people: himself; his teammates past and present; his former managers and coaches; and especially his family, who sat near the plate cheering his every at-bat during the past few games.

Dunbar spoke with BNN and said, "I knew number 400 would come sooner or later. I had to keep reminding myself, 'Relax, relax, just let it happen, let it happen.' And it finally did."

His milestone homer came in the Ann Arbor Wolverines 7-4 win over the Maricopa Rattlers. Dunbar went 1 for 4 in the game, scored 1 run, and batted in 1.

Dunbar has played in 1763 games with a .303 career batting average and 2038 hits. He also has scored 1218 runs and driven in 1431 runs with 400 home runs.

With their loss, Indianapolis is eliminated from the playoffs and both Havana and Washington clinch playoff spots!

Final game of the season:

Havana 94-67
Washington 94-67

If both teams end the regular season in a tie, there will be a 1 game playoff to determine which team gets homefield advantage in the CLCS.

With their loss, Indianapolis is eliminated from the playoffs and both Havana and Washington clinch playoff spots!

Sorry Teach!

I think Clifton set the Spring Team record for HRs. I'll have to double check that. I'm pretty amazed we made it to the playoffs. Congrats to the other playoff folks, hopefully I'll get to see more than one of you this post season ;- )

I'll admit, you might be right.

But I look at it this way. If I can't actually be in the playoffs, my team can at least play spoiler to others that have high hopes!

On a side note. I think I've figure this team out. We're basically doomed and playing like the true life NFL Cardinals (which obviously this team was modeled after). Only in this realm, we went from London, Canada to Chicago, Illinois.

I think the curse is in the logo.

The rest of the 90's and early 2000's are gonna be rough

Good news is that come 2008, we should be in for a heck of a season... only to be let down in the bottom of the ninth by a solo homerun.

Excuse me????

I know, you couldn't see the standings right through your tears...take comfort in the fact I'll probably have an early exit.

Crud - I had a long drawn out post about the 36-0 game, this season, and the future of my Naps but my laptop died... oh well

Good jobs to the teams in the playoffs...

As always - thank you to Alan.

Sorry sorry, your team name is just so small and insignificant looking. *EDITED due to Tasan's wounded pride*

(But seriously, good luck!)

Teach, despite missing the playoffs, you have done a good job adapting to the X.

My late season slide is not unexpected, I went with 12 P and 13 batters this season and thats a mix that usually fades out on me.

The AI did a nice job with Havana didn't it?

I love the faith you have in me, but AI's got my team too right now. I was stuck in North Carolina for an extra-long weekend and now I'm trying to get my computers back up and running and it's not going well.

Really? That's my standard mix.

I like 11P. And I think I used a utility infielder as my backup catcher.

I usually go 11p 14f myself as well. Only on rare occasions do I go 12p. I just don't think you get the best using per inning out of the roster that way, unless you have a real weak starting bunch.

Not sure if anyone noticed it but Tony Esparza became the all-time FOOL-X stolen base leader this season...by 1 base.

Since we picked him up in '85 he's stolen 847 bases with the Axemen and been a 5 time All-Star.
