It was an interesting scene. Dispute between the vets and the trainer. They brought him out and had him do some runs and watched him, he went back in, got a bath and whatever, then came back out and did some more runs. Trainers huddled together and called him off due to some bruising and it got heated.

This place is the mecca of people watching. You could spend a month straight in LaGuardia and not see as much as we saw in the first 15 minutes.

Damn. Two horses have been euthanized so far today.

Both had the same jockey. You think that will end his career?

Well the pace was honest, maybe even quick. I got the lead I wanted from VERIFYING but after those early fractions it seemed very unlikely he’d last… he faded then swerved into the rail and was eased up.

HIT SHOW ran nicely for 5th but clearly a click behind.

MAGE really sharp and ran well after a jagged start. Hats off.

Had a couple saving exacta bets with the 8-3, but nothing serious.

…with my top pick pulled up, I still actually made money on the race. Absurd.

I don't bet much so we just went with a few bucks on APOSTROPHE CASTROPHE and just missed. My mom had me put $2 on the 14 to show and of course was my only winning ticket on the day for a whopping $4.70.

But the weather was great and you couldn't beat our view. We visited our other folks down in the box and that view is amazing but I would not survive 8 hours down there. Great day.

Thoughts on the Preakness? I don't mind a 1-7 exacta box. Not sure if Mage can hit the second leg.

Short field, and the bettors have pounded down all the longshots to single digits. I'm in for 1 NATIONAL TREASURE to wire the field, and given all the crazy money on the longshots, I think the value is probably actually with the favorites.

That felt like what was going to happen. National Treasure looked like the spoiler.

Well, I didn't have as much horse as I thought I did with the #1. After a nearly 50 second half mile, he should have had a ton of run in him to pull away, but instead had to really battle off the 7 who ran nicely. Lucky to get the win and a decent cash, overall.

I was shocked he didn't win by more after those fractions. Would have bet him but hurt my back moving and wasn't up for the 2 hour trip. Kentucky derby weekend the only thing I hit was the 14 in the oaks and mage in the derby. Put me up for both days. I have bet the oaks derby double the last 20 years but didn't this year because I left abruptly early oaks day.

New York Thunder just took a horrible spill in the grade 1 sprint at Saratoga on traverse day. He was opening up in the stretch and just went down. Looked really bad.

Confirmed euthanatized. Horrible. The sport has a real problem.

The sport will be gone soon for sure. Between breeders going for speed and not stamina (making them more fragile), trainers getting away with illegal drugs with little or no repercussions, CAW teams killing any sort of prices, customers (bettors) still being treated like crap, gambling monies going to FanDuel and other betting apps, the game is getting what it deserved -- a slow death that has been in a fatal acceleration for the last couple of years. I used to be a steady player up until a few years ago. I don't even get excited about the Derby anymore. Horses die as a part of the sport but there are factors that seemingly have increased the chances of that occurring. I honestly won't miss it when it fades away.

I'm moving that direction more slowly, but it's the only direction this is going, agreed.

Wait, a second horse had a catastrophic event after their race at the same track today and also had to be put down?

It is amazing any trainer or owner would race there at this point. I get the money and prestige, but 29 dead in two seasons.

As per usual, officials want to blame the racing surface because the surface can't talk back. Horses have run on dirt since they started racing. It's not the surface; it's the trainers, vets, breeders, and owners causing this mess.
