but are they required. My high school they required it, but about 20 miles up the road only kids going to college were allowed to take it (obviously that school was given more money for its scores).

Here's the '04-'05 (Seniors only) SAT scores (highest) for the 2004 Georgia HS Football state champs

State Avg SAT = 989
State Avg SAT (Sr's only) = 993
Nat'l Avg SAT = 1020
Nat'l Avg SAT (Sr's only) 1028

AAAAA - Lowndes Co 1015
AAAA - Warner Robins 1014
AAA - LaGrange 1011
AA - Charlton Co 851
A - Clinch Co 844 and Hawkinsville 983

Non-champs but recent/traditional football powerhouses
Valdosta 990, Parkview 1102 , Brookwood 1115 , Lincoln Co 910 , Shaw 903 ,
Fitzgerald 970 , Buford 1020
...and for those not in the know, there is a very strong correlation (as I'd guessed) between the more rural schools and the average scores <1000. Valdosta is small-town, not really rural. All of the others except Shaw have heavy rural components. Shaw is basically the "football magnet" school for Muscogee County now. They've set up a horticulture program there (I kid you not), and football players from all over the county suddenly develop a keen interest in horticulture so they can transfer to Shaw.

Point being, the vast majority of the suburban and small town football powers are performing above state averages, and are either at, slightly below, or slightly above the national averages. The things that make a strong football program (adult involvement, sense of community, hard work) translate quite well into academic achievement when properly put into perspective.

I think it is required in some places, but Jon is pretty much correct. We have an *extremely* high level of SAT participation, including many, many kids who aren't even considering college. I believe there are a few entire COUNTIES in rural areas with average scores less than 750.

Found this in an AJC article:
Quote:
Georgia's high participation in the SAT — three-fourths of high school seniors take it — is puzzling. Far fewer high school graduates go on to college. About 40 percent enroll in Georgia's public colleges and universities; the state doesn't track how many attend private institutions or go to college out of state.

Does it cost money to take the SAT? I vaguely remember having to pay some nominal fee to take it...

Again, apologies for the multiple questions, but is it possible that's its simply a well funded area, and therefore they attract top talent of all kinds (academic and athletic) ? I guess what I would be curious about is the SAT scores for atheletes vs non-atheletes and to measure that disparity, though that data for that is obviously unavailable.

Yes. The schools in the northern half of metro Atlanta in particular have significant resources, no question about it. It's a minimum of 100-200 bucks for a lowest-tier membership in the football booster club in many of those places (and booster club membership is dang near required, and goes up above the $500 level often). The top three SAT-score producing schools mentioned in Jon's post above, Parkview, Brookwood, and Buford, are all in that area.

Can't help with the athletes vs non-athletes as you point out, but let's see what "Percentage of Students Eligible for Free/Reduced Lunches" shows.

Even before doing this, I can kind of shoot down the "well-funded = better performance in both academics & athletics" argument. Some of our absolute worst football programs are in some of the wealthiest areas. (McIntosh HS comes to mind, for those who are familiar)

State Average Eligible for Free/Reduced = 48%

AAAAA - Lowndes Co 30%
AAAA - Warner Robins 31%
AAA - LaGrange 46%
AA - Charlton Co 57%
A - Clinch Co 65% and Hawkinsville 49%

Non-champs but recent/traditional football powerhouses
Valdosta 43%, Parkview 15% , Brookwood 9% , Lincoln Co 58% , Shaw 33%,
Fitzgerald 50% , Buford 31%

Basically, there's the already known correllation between income & SAT performance, but nothing that really links football performance with income.

Hey Jon, you left off the only school in Georgia other than Parkview to make SI's list of Top High Schools in America. Them War Eagles won it all in '03, and they have a purty good average SAT score.

But they're private & aren't included in the state DOE Report Card data (unless I missed something).

edit to add: For all the crying that's done in some places about the private schools, they're one of only two privates to win a football title in the past decade. Without looking, who is the other (I didn't remember this myself)

As an aside, back to the topic of athletics vs academic success being a priority, here's some things to consider:

-- It's pretty clear that athletic success isn't limited by area income. We've had state champions from the richest to some of the poorest. Compare that to the list of literary winners, debate winners, one-act play winners, etc & you'll find a stronger correllation to income & state titles.
--Now consider that roughly half the students in Georgia public schools qualify for free/reduced meals (a good indicator of the low-income component of a school's enrollment)

I believe there's a case to be made that it isn't just about football/sports being more "valued" at some of the schools, it's about prominence being given to areas of competition where there's a higher probability of success. Not a more valuable success, but definitely a better chance of success.

Yes, you could argue that the lack of importance placed on academic pursuits is causing the correllation to occur (I might not disagree with that personally) but still I believe it becomes an arguable point.

Nobody was forced to take it when I was in school, but almost everybody that graduated had taken the SAT at least once. I know the teachers/counselors encouraged everyone to take these kinds of things at least once, regardless of what they were intending to do.

This is often demonstrated very clearly by the music programs. The higher income areas usually had the most students involved and the highest quality of performance.
