I have unlimited data....grandathered through Verizon.
Its one of the few reasons I stay with them.

+1

I'm not a huge fan of Verizon, but god damn, I'm going to hold on to my unlimited plan for as long as I can.

So this week is the wife's birthday, and she wants one of these, so we may get one. I say *may* because I planned on getting it at Best Buy to use the 18 months financing, but they aren't doing pre-orders, don't know how many they are getting, and didn't even advertise it in this week's Sunday ad. Very strange, IMO.

Touche. You win.

Regardless...not a smart idea without unlimited data I'd point out.

I'd be surprised, though, if 4G and data plans are really that dangerous. I'd be willing to wager that people won't come as close to their limit with 4G as they think. At least the average user.

agreed....I just dont know what people download that runs up the data that much. I stream Panora 4-5 hours 7 days a week and I rarely pass the 2 gig mark

I download the hell out of some podcasts and usually end up in that 4-6 gig range. I don't play much video at all. If i had to go to a metered plan, I would simply download all of my shows via my home connection instead.

That said, I'm in a somewhat unusual position in that I'm about to buy a large quantity for my school. And the same question about whether to buy the iPad 2 or 3 comes up, with the added factor that we'd be looking at $100 off times how many ever machines we buy (right now 5 per classroom in our elementary school).
As an update we ordered the iPad 2s yesterday, although, the decision was made for me and 2 other people to get 3s in a month or so in anticipation of giving 3s to teachers down the line.

Apple made sure to lock-up all the packages that were shipped. I think last year some of the iPad2's were leaked.

My wife went down to the local Best Buy and picked one up. Didn't seem like there was much of a rush on it, as she said no one was there. She walked up about 30 minutes before, got her ticket, and left, then came back shortly after 10 to buy it. But maybe the ticket process has lessened the bum-rush/wait in line stuff. I think you've got until 2pm to come back and purchase it or it's released to the public.

The screen really is impressive compared to the iPad 2. My daughter told me I had to have all my stuff off the iPad 2 by the time she got home as she has laid claim to it.

The dictation seems to work pretty well on it.

It doesn't do well with Google Earth. When you zoom in it just shows circles and half-circles.

Just got my new iPad today, currently restoring it from the backup of my original iPad. Pretty interesting to see how it compares, it's certainly a lot lighter.

I noticed that Apple has a trade-in policy on their iPad2 as credit for the newer ones. Do they sell the traded-in used ones at the Apple store? I'm thinking of maybe getting one, but see no compelling reason to buy the iPad3. If not, what does Apple do with used ones?

It's heavier than the 2...is it lighter than the 1 still though?

You can buy a refurbished iPad2 on the Apple site, yes.

iPad 1: 1.5lb (wifi model) 1.6lb (3g)
iPad 2: 1.33lb
iPad 3: 1.44lb
