Czech Republic 3 vs Denmark 4 Russia 4 vs Finland 4 Switzerland 2 vs Canada 6 Sweden vs USA Sweden 4 vs USA 3 Kessel scores his 3rd goal of the WJC's, goes + 1 and has an 8 rating but he can't stop Sweden from winning a heartbreaker against the US. The US needs wins in their final two games to have a real shot at advancing. |

USA vs Switzerland USA 7 vs Switzerland 1 Kessel has 2 assists and a + 2 rating. He gets an 8 rating for the game in what was a blowout win over the Swiss. The win put the USA in the playoff round of the WJC's for now, but they must beat Kazaksthan to keep it. USA vs Russia USA 2 vs Russia 5 Kessel plays 32 minutes but it isn't enough. Nothing on the stat sheet, no +/-, and an 8 rating leads to a decent night but his WJC is over. A tough loss but it took two wins over bad teams to even make it this far, so it's not surprising. Sweden 4 vs Finland 2 |

OLYMPIC SEMI-FINALS Canada 3 vs Sweden 4 (OT) And in another classic between these two teams, the Swedes pull out the victory in overtime. Crosby played 12 minutes, was + 1 and had an 8 rating but it wasn't enough as the Swedes captain, Peter Forsberg scores in OT to push the Swedes past the Canadians. Iginla was second star with two goals, but it wasn't enough. Finland 4 vs Russia 3 (OT) Another classic that is won by Lethinen in OT vs the Russians. Finland/Sweden is shaping up to be a good one as they have the two best records in the tournament. |

BRONZE MEDAL GAME Russia 2 vs Canada 4 Canada won't leave the Olympics empty handed, as they notch a W over the Russians to win the Bronze Medal. Crosby plays 13 minutes and gets a 7 rating in the win. GOLD MEDAL GAME Sweden 4 vs Finland 3 (OT) What a game! The Swedes down 2-0 in the 3rd get 2 goals from Henrik Sedin in 24 seconds to tie. Then the Fins went back and scored to give them a 3-2 lead, but once again, the Swedes come back with 6 minutes left to tie. Then in OT, Daniel Alfredsson scored the game winner to give Sweden the Olympic Gold. |

I am not going to do monthly updates until Kessel is in the NHL as I feel it's harder to accomplish in an unplayable league. I'll sim out this year, do a year end update and then get to the draft.

My Carolina Report: Since I've fast simmed thus far trying to get Kessel into the NHL, I've realized I need to control the coaching aspects too, since a broad gameplan has lead my inept team (which has no talent on the pro roster, sans a few player) to a measley 35 point campaign.
This should land me the top spot in the draft. I'll be torn (if I win the lottery) between Kessel or Frolik from the looks of it. My goal now is to have an up tempo style of hockey, and Kessel does fit that mold fairly well. Andrew Ladd has torn up the WHL and will be on the Canes team next year, and the same can be said for Alex Bourett, who is playing well in the Q. Ladd/Bourett/Kessel (or Staal) could make this up tempo style plausable. Needless to say, it'll be interesting to see what happens next. |

Wow is it painful to see computer AI outperforming our actual front office. Bringing in a top notch D prospect after drafting a potential top tier center, what are they trying to do, make the Oilers a legitimate threat to get to the second or third round in the playoffs? The nerve!

Checking out the Oilers (who missed the playoffs)
They went for the youth movement. Their D is anchored by Komisarek and Phenauf. Schremp had a decent year with roughly 50 points. Not bad for a rookie. They just have a lot of geling to do. Their oldest player is Todd Harvey at 31 so it's no surpise they were 10th in the West. |

Out of curiosity, could you give a depth chart for the current Oilers? With the trades you've listed alone I'm guessing their lineup is drastically different, and I'm curious which prospects have jumped in.

2006 NHL Entry Draft
#1 - Nashville Predators - C, Bryan Little (Saginaw, OHL) [ISS #3] Thoughts: Looking at it now, Little might be the #1 player in the draft. He tore up the O and has a lot of very solid ratings across the board. #2 - Carolina Hurricanes - C/RW, Phil Kessel (Minnesota, NCAA) [ISS #2] Thoughts: Upon looking at the #'s, Frolik started worrying me. His 3 balance was a major deterent. Nolan wanted him, but my Assisstant GM and Head Scout said we should go with Kessel and I can't say I blame them. #3 - Minnesota Wild - RW, Michael Frolik (Kladno, CZE) [ISS #1] Thoughts: Frolik is either going to be a star or a massive bust. Technichally, his ratings are the best in the draft. Everything else however leaves a lot to be desired. #4 - Anahiem Mighty Ducks - G, Semyon Varlamov (Kingston, OHL) [ISS #5] Thoughts: Top goaltender prospect. Played on a horrible team in Kingston, where he was 15-29-2, but he had a GAA of 2.29 and a save % of .934 which is not bad at all for such an awful team. #5 - Chicago Black Hawks - C/RW, Peter Mueller (US National Developmental Team) [ISS #6] Thoughts: Maybe the top player in the draft. He had __209__ points for the US team, racking up 113 goals and 78 assists. Again though, as a whole, Kessel ranked a bit higher on my board. He was #3 to me, but I think the Hawks got a steal. A damn steal, even at #5. |

Heh, looks like the Oilers certainly shouldn't be having cap problems anytime soon. Staios, Jason Smith, Ryan Smyth, Brewer, Moreau, York or Dvorak anymore, talk about a cash dump.
Wish they would have kept Smyth and Semenov though. Thanks for the update, good luck with the wonderkid! |

I forgot to include the Oilers first round pick.
#10, Edmonton Oilers, RW Aleksandr Vasyonov, (Yaroslav, RUS) [ISS #10] Thoughts: An 18 year old who is a lot like Zubov. He can play off the puck and can put the puck in the net. The only question is he is out at least 4 months with a torn ACL, so it'll be a wait and see as far as his productivity goes. |

Zubov, playing for Swift Current in the WHL, was dominate.
71 GP, 75 G, 76 A, 151 PT, +72, 8.07 rating Won several WHL awards and was a CHL All Star. He has signed with the Oilers. Hemsky had 17 G and 17 A for the Oilers. Not bad consider the lack of offense the Oilers had. Anything else, lemme know. |

As far as how Hemsky looks. He'll play wing with either Schremp or Zubov. He has the look of a potential 30 goal, 30 assist guy. Playing with those guys he could end up doing a lot of damage.
