He was trying to back his teammate though, so I will give Wainwright a pass. I can't believe Holliday dropped that ball and cost the Cards the game, and probably the series.

I've been to playoff baseball games. It's not like football where the crowd gets quiet depending on what the home team is doing. There's just as good of a chance that the towels would distract a Dodger.

WoW! Twins get a walk and 3 singles in a row to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the 8th against the Yanks in New York!

Minnesota up 3-1 now. Thank you very much!

Chip Caray needs to stop calling soft liners fly balls. Fly balls go higher than 10-15 ft off the ground. Chip called the Twins first go ahead single a flyball and also the second go ahead single a flyball. Both of which were soft liners at worst.

On Bucknor - can we appeal a game before it starts? At least it's Friday night, so drinking heavily to deal with his strike zone won't hurt me at work tomorrow. Greg Gibson is the other abysmal one - his strike zone might actually be worse.

On the teams themselves, I don't really get why the Sox announced that Lester is going on 3 days rest and Dice-K is in the bullpen before Game 2. Bring Dice-K out if need be, preserve your options otherwise. This isn't the NFL where the league mandates telling the public who's playing for gambling purposes.

15 feet away from the play and he missed it. Shocking, really.

They may have scored on that single...

The umpiring in major league baseball is hitting an all time low. Some of the blown calls a blind 95 year old could get right. Good lord was that a horrible call. (as were the Red Sox calls last night)

And what a hit from that anti clutch guy ARod. He sucks ass.

Very impressed with A-Rod the past 4 games, especially tonight. I agree the umpiring has been terrible.

Anybody hear how many gaffs Chip Carey has made so far in the last 3 TBS games? Tonight:

"and Nathan can't finish things in the 9th" - Skip Carey on Joe Nathan leaving the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.

That is about as un-clutch as it gets. . .

Twins choked big time there despite getting absolutely screwed on a Yankee fan umpire.

Hindsight though, if Mauer gets on second the next three batters may have gotten out. This is baseball and who knows what the hell would have happened after Mauer's double..

I will stop being upset about it.

I can understand blown calls. A bang bang play at first. A slide so perfect the ump missed it. A tag on the shoulder that just beats a guys foot hitting the bag and the ump calling a guy safe.

For the life of me, I don't know how an umpire can justify the missed call in this game. He's 15 feet from the ball. The ball landed over a foot inside the baseline.

I guess the MLB is becoming the NBA. There is simply no other explanation for a call that poor.

It was assured to happen. The umpire in question should not work another post season game. He should be sent home right along with the Twins. (who did their own part in losing the game)

Some of the worst calls I have ever seen. The balls/strikes, the blown "foul ball" call, etc....

As much as I hate to see that blown call, really the Twins should not have left that many men on base and blew a certain score with Gomez getting tagged out. Man did the Twins ever lose this one.

The Twins blew this one more than the Yankees earned it, that is for sure.

From bases loaded with nobody out but not scoring in the top to losing on a walk-off in the bottom of the inning, ouch.

The announcer just said Minnesota left 17 runners on base too.

I agree, the biggest reason he is there is for fair or foul calls and he can't even get an obvious one right, so why even keep him working post season games this year and possibly blow another important call.

It's time to get rid of umpires alltogether, bring on the robots...

At the very least, you know, use GOOD umpires in playoff games, but even that is too much to ask. CB Buck? Seriously? Horrific...instant replay/robots/etc...needed asap

Old timers don't want to hear it, but once an ump hits 55, they need to be forced out. It's life, deal with it...

"Now Jered Weaver has to face Dustin Pedroia, who is literally taking this at bat pitch by pitch." ... after that I muted it. Did I miss anything?

PS - did Matt Holliday set the record for "most times shown being hit in the groin in a 24-hour cycle on ESPN" ? I know it was a terrible play anyways, and the anchors kept saying he was hit in the stomach, but that just got funnier the 137th time they showed it each Sportscenter.

Just like if I have to hear about how "the Twins play the game the right way. They hit when it counts, they teach their pitchers to hit the strike zone and not walk anyone, and the team does all the little things that win games."

This shit drives me crazy. Like no other team in MLB does these things to win games. Pretty sure if you don't hit when it matters, and don't hit the strike zone but instead walk people, and don't do the small things, you will lose. Like the Cubs.

Watching some of the horrid calls the last few days, I'm still trying to figure out why we can't automate this and/or have very quick rulings from above. On a close play, hit rewind real quick to verify it. With a camera following the ball, foul ball/home run calls would be much easier to get right up front, with either lights or a horn or an announcement over the PA to make the call from the booth. We can surely automate balls and strikes trivially. Baseball seems the most ripe for either automating or having very quick instant replay, especially with the length of time pitchers take to make the next pitch...

God Bless TBS for leaving their pitch track thing up all the time, unlike Fox who now NEVER seems to want to show where a pitch went unless the ump was right or it was very close. The nice thing about this is it also shows when an ump is at least being consistent with his calls.
