I feel like NE and NO should get some sort of compensation from Miami for tampering. Give NO #32 this year and then give the Pats #96 in 2024 or something.

Yeah it's odd. Tough to say anything as a Patriots fan because people will try to tie it to other stuff even though it's the second time an AFC East team has been punished for tampering with our players, but that 2019 team was pretty good and going into Week 17 in Miami with a chance at a Bye and it fell apart kinda weirdly. I won't claim we totally would have won the Super Bowl or something (or Brady would have stayed - he was gone after that year) but it can't help if our QB is taking meetings with the opposing owner that week instead of focusing on preparation. I also don't care much at all if it's tampering between the end of the season and the legal period, but I feel like talking to another team's players during the season should be a pretty damn big no no and a red line, but because it's the Patriots and Brady didn't go people aren't as outraged. I also feel Brady is sliding by without much PR flak yet and he should probably be getting some.

It is also so funny that the Saints and Patriots are somehow in the middle of a Miami scandal.

I think that the fans of both teams would love it if an offseason could pass without our teams being part of whatever the weirdest news story of the year is.

I feel like the NFL owes Lions fans compensation for delivering a defective product over the last 60 years.

That's where I am. We all know that soft-tampering happens all the time and everyone does it. But I did have a sense that people didn't do this stuff during the season. Kind of a strong gentleman's agreement.

It does. I completely get why players try the "rest and avoid surgery" route. But it feels like 9 times out of 10, all that does is delay the inevitable surgery.

Good news for him is that he locked in a big guaranteed money deal with the Rams before this flared up.

Increasingly I find myself more interested in the NFL's annual soap opera of contract gamesmanship between the time-limited players and cartoon villain owners than the actual games.

The Cardinals are giving the Browns a run for their money as to who had the worst off-season (fitting, since their last NFL title was 17 years earlier than the Browns' last title). This time, the RB coach. Though if you're going to lose a coach, that's probably the one you'd pick.

I don't feel like Hunt has a ton of leverage here... he might be a useful player, but his age, past, and position conspire against him being a top-tier target for anyone, I'd think.

There's obviously a lot of money out there with the cap increase. Teams also seem to be much more tolerant of players who don't mind being headaches when it comes to contracts.

Running back has become a little like the relief pitcher position in baseball, only with really short careers. You need to carry several of them, and they fade into the background most of the time. Until you suddenly find one that's carrying your team for a few minutes.

I guess Hunt feels he's only got a little left in the tank, and the risk is high that he won't look good enough this season to warrant a solid free agency deal next year. But the structure of his contract makes a holdout a poor decision.

I don’t understand the nfl trade markets. Teams will blow all manner of 3rds and 4ths on Benny Snell type stiffs but I doubt anyone would give even a 4th for Hunt.

Isn't one making 6 million and going to be a free agent and the other cost controlled and cheap for a few seasons?

Yeah, Hunt isn’t going anywhere without a big new contract. Is it worth giving that to any 27 year old RB, let alone one with such a checkered past?

I watched that first episode of Lions Hard Knocks. It was entertaining and pretty much exactly what you wanted from Dan Campbell and crew. That dude really is crazy like a fox, in how his energy & attitude somehow serves to keep expectations low while remaining appealing to players, fans & media (and therefore owners).

Coastal Carolina DE Jeffrey Gunter looking good in preseason, sadly against my Cards-had a sack and did a lot of good things that might keep him on the Bengals roster.

Can someone again explain to me how he was the #3 punter taken in the draft?

Or is there something about his game that doesn't translate? Like 62 net with the touchback should still be quite good but maybe he doesn't keep it in the air long enough or something?

It’s probably something like that SI. Like I’m willing to bet Harbaugh or BB could explain it to us in a sentence or two but they’re too busy doing important shit.

Could be something as simple as “we don’t believe his foot exit angle is constantly repeatable”

Without knowing anything about his game, there's definitely more to punting than just kicking it as far as you can. I'd be curious to know what the average yard line is for punts these days, or what percentage are within 45-60 yards and require some sort of coffin corner ability. That's the first thing that comes to mind - the success rate on pinning your opponent inside their 20. Maybe his ability to do so from his own 20 is negated by his inability to do anything other than put it through the end zone in most other cases.

the 'punter god' came into the draft with questions about his hangtime and accuracy. he also had a high number of touchbacks in college. i think stout (the BAL punter) was well regarded as a more nfl ready prospect.
