Looks like I was called up just to warm a spot on the bench for now. Only one game and one AB this week.

VI. I Give Up

Trying to figure this organization out, that is. Monday, having gone 4 for 8 with my second HR in the past two games, I was sat down for the Dragons' game today. Meanwhile, the soon-to-be 23 year old A league, slow as Christmas third baseman, Thomas Rascoe, is put #2 in the batting order.

Tuesday I go 2-4 again and wednesday I am 1 for 3 when I get pinch hit for once again. I am on a 7 for 15 run and they pinch hit for me. Thursday I get pinch hit for again. This is crazy. Plus it's pissing me off, which doesn't help anything.

Friday is an off day and my family gets in to town. We go to Fiddlers Sports Bar and guess who is there also...the manager of the Dragons. I want to go shoot him but my dad suggests asking him what's going on face-to-face at the ballpark, not in a bar. I don't know why he is so calm about it as I seem to be wasting 2/3 of my time in A-ball with all the pinch hit stuff, not playing in games and especially not playing in the field but two innings in two months.

We lose 5-0 on saturday but I get it together nicely for the family on sunday with a 2 for 4 day and 3 RBIs in a 16-6 win. The Dragons are 3-3 for the week. We have to take a bus ride for an away series that starts monday so I say my goodbyes right after the game and tell my dad I will talk to the skipper. It's not really my style, up until now, to ask my coach what the hell he's doing. I have always just done what I was told. Of course, when you are all-state, you don't get told much, but in this case I will go mad if I don't figure out what the plan is so I better instigate a conversation soon. Maybe they'll trade me.

A couple of our class had big games in the majors, winning PoG awards. Mario Vizcaino, the Royals starting catcher, went 4 for 6 with 3 RBIs on wednesday. On saturday, Milwaukee shortstop K.A. Ton was 3 for 5, also with 3 RBIs. Vizcaino is hitting 8th mostly, btw, while Ton hits in the 6th spot. Vizcaino is now the #3 fielding catcher in the A.L. at .988 while Ton is at #5 with a .954 fielding percentage.

In other news, Rob Nielsen is off the San Diego injury list but still hasn't played yet while Grady Hatcher was sent back to AAA by the Cubs.

VII. More Like It

For the first time all season, and before I was never even that close, I had the best week of our class. I hit .370 and even had more RBIs than anyone else (that probably won't happen too often). Who knows if I can keep it going but it was fun.

I now have a 5 game hit streak going but, unlike the 9 gamer I had before, this is a good one. Three of the games were multi-hit affairs and we only lost once in that time. The Dragons had a good week at 6-1, as well.

As far as the rest goes, it was definately a week where you know this is a crazy show we are a part of. The business of baseball was full out this week as we had our first class member traded. Joseph Keene was traded from Minnesota to the Angels on saturday. The Twins seem to have unloaded him because all they got was a 28 year old first baseman who is hitting only .220 at this time (though his career average isn't too bad at .280. Maybe they had a bad injury or something.

Three other draftees were moved around the levels this week as well. Padre pitcher Rob Nielsen was sent back to AA, but I figure that may just be a rehab kinda thing after his injury. Who knows? Grady Hatcher was called back to the majors at the end of the week, at least he is listed on the roster now, anyway. Also, Riley Navraj, the other highly ranked third baseman in our draft class, appears to have been promoted to AAA as well at the end of the week. We'll see what is really going on soon, of course.

All this gets me hopeful that either Thomas Rascoe or I will get called to AA soon. The Reds don't need two starting third basemen at the A level, I would think. Of course, we have seen that what I think hasn't really been part of the scheme so far, so what the hell. I'll just keep on trying to improve and FORCE their hand if I can.

It was a good week to be in our draft class, for the most part, as a hitter. Seven of us had averages over .300, led by AJ Tucker of the Expos. AJ hit .364 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs. Dennis Adkins got his first hit in the majors on saturday as well.

The pitchers were another matter. San Diego seems to be screwing with Rob Nielsen like the Reds are with me. He was left in AA even though his ERA is 2.08 in AAA, actually a tad lower than his AA average. Plus, he was used as a starter this week but then was put in for relief once also. No consistancy. No way to know what to prepare for. I can relate. Tim Moungey of Minnesota had a terrible time. After many relief appearances, he too was all of a sudden put in for a start. I'm sure that's what he would prefer, but spot starting is a bitch and Tim was, I guess, not prepared. He gave up 6 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Not good.

I had another excellent week at the plate and another nothing at third base. More and more, I wouldn't mind being traded at all. Even though I hit .368 for the week and had a 7-game hitting streak at the time, I was pinch hit for in three consecutive games. Pure bullshit, too, as I hit .444 in those three games before being lifted (4 for 9).

Of course, with all that crap, I see that another of our class seems to have been promoted for next week as Wahoo McDaniel was on the Detroit AAA roster at the end of the week, though he hasn't played there yet. Glad for him but, when do I get my turn...

One of these days.

I'm surprised you didn't go with Frenchy Armstrong or Billy Aude.

Still going good. Hit .316 for the week. Would have done better except for the 0 for 4 on sunday. Seems I always have trouble at the end of the week. Maybe I wear down a bit or something. We were off on thursday this week and I went to Larry's Workout Palace as I do most days but maybe I need to check with the trainer to see if I should tone down my workouts. I seem to be fatigued, very fatigued, when we play a bunch of games in a row, even though I still got pinch hit for this week.

Not a very good week for our draft class pitchers. Moungey and Nielsen were ok (well, Nielsen was very good, actually) but I know they would rather be starting and they aren't- I can relate to that feeling. Nagata and LaLoosh both went 0-2 on the week with quite a few hits and runs given up.

Nothing outstanding in the minors, though four of us did hit .300 for the week. Owen Hunter hit .333 with 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, 4 runs and 4 walks. Oh, and in the majors, Dennis Adkins and Grady Hatcher both got their first big league RBI this week. Nice.

I finally got around to asking the manager about the way I am being used. He basically told me that it was his job to run the team and the purpose of the team was to get as many prospects as possible ready to move on to AA or AAA. He said he was utilizing everyone on the club as much as possible and that as the youngest I had more to learn and not to expect to be treated differently.

So I said "Why can't I play in the field some, even if it is just once a week or late in games?"
He said "We need to know if Rascoe can handle the job. He is four years older and we have an investment in him, too. It's not all about you, here, no matter what you were paid or when you were drafted."
"I'm not saying it should be about me, but if your job is to get us ready for AA or whatever, how can I get ready being taken out three times a week and never playing at third?"
"Your time will come. Be patient," he said.
"I have been patient for over two months. It gets old."

Don't know if that was a good idea. Don't know if it was proper etiquette. Don't know if I care at this point, either.

His Robness demands to be called up to the majors in a starting role. This grows beyond tolerance.

That's great advice. It's only been 2 months and you're whining already? Call me after 2 years go by.

Al is an 18 year old who has always had his way. IOW, he is spoiled, pretty much.

Patience, grasshopper. That's what people tell me. I never had much, to tell you the truth. No patience for losing. No patience for whiners. No patience for not being the best. That's what's so hard about this. I was always the best. Always!! Struggling was never a word I had a need to know. Neither was pinch hit, nor Mendoza. Now, though, each word has been in my face for several months.

Confidence is a funny thing. I had none after doing so poorly for so long, but now it's back. Along with a cocky attitude that can get me in trouble. Cocky says I have the highest average of any of my draft class. It helps for confidence, also, since I know I'll be fighting against these guys for years to come (we all hope) to get what we want- gold gloves, stat category leadership, RINGS. But patience says to realize that my average has been forged in A-ball, unlike all the others who are facing better pitchers most every day.

So I sit here in Dayton and wait for the callup, whether of Thomas Rascoe or myself. I know it may not come this year at all, though I can't understand how I can be going so well and not get the chance to move up. I had another very good week, hitting .385, scoring 4 runs with 3 steals. Come ON!!

Patience, grasshopper, patience.

All four pitchers in our group got to start last week, though Tim Moungey had a weird one and also had a relief appearance. Moungey pitched 4.0 innings for the week, including his relief job, but had a 0.00 ERA. So why did they pull him so soon if he had a shutout going in his start? More confusion. Also, Nuke LaLoosh still leads all of A-ball in Ks with his 132.

Several big happenings for the fielders in our crew. Riley Navraj, the Pirates third baseman, is now the #1 prospect in baseball- at least for a week. Grady Hatcher hit his first major league HR sunday ,while Wahoo McDaniel has been changed to a 3rd baseman by Datroit at AAA. Three third basemen now in our group, though McDaniel is in the AL and Navraj and I are in the NL.

VIII. All Star- Not

Been a long two weeks with a 5 day break for the all star game. None of our crew made it, though I wouldn't think anyone would have expected to anyway. I would hope I get to play in the All Star game at some point, though I suspect that's a ways off for me. It will be interesting to see who the first one of our draft class is to be selected.

I went home during the break, but just for a couple of days. It was good to sleep in my own bed. I'm gonna take my pillow back with me. It seems sort of dorky, but I sleep better with my pillow, I think. It is a feather pillow and really flat. I hate big pillows. It's hard to remember that I am, basically, still a kid. At 18, I have never had to deal with alot of the things I am doing for myself now. I haven't really said anything about my living situation- roommates, eating habits, etc...- but that isn't really my style. In fact, I usually don't talk much at all, period, so writing this is a bit of a chore, though I am getting used to it. I think it helps me to get it written down. I can go back and read it and see if I am being to whiney or idiotic and adjust from there.

I did see Lisa, but just barely. We are broken-up, for sure, though we never really said so. It was more or less just understood, I guess. I don't really need, or have time, for a girlfriend right now, though I do miss all the things that go with it (if you know what I mean, and I think you do. ).

Anyway, I had another very good week and I am hovering around the .300 mark in average for the year. A month ago that would have seemes ridiculous, but I want to get it over .300 and keep it there for the rest of the season if I can. That is my one goal at this point.

Looking at the stat lines for our class, I feel better about myself, not because some players are struggling or anything, but because I can see the ups-and-downs that we all are going through from week to week. Hitting .333 one week and .200 the next. ERA of 1.50 one week and 9.5 the next. Everyone is just trying to find their way...and I hope we all do.

Speaking of ups-and-downs, Robin Witte, the Cincy third baseman whom I hope to replace eventually (or get traded), won the Player of the Week award in the NL for the second time this season. Now, if someone has been PotW twice in little more than half the season, I would think they were an all-star type player. However, Robin is hitting only .254 on the year, so he seems hit about .220 for awhile then blast out a .450 week, then drop back down.

Speaking of Cincinnati third basemen, I think I see why I am stuck in A ball. At the AA level, there are two players listed as third basemen. Robert Haddad is 20 and Tuan Nall is 23. Robert is hiting a brisk .209 while Tuan rings in at .233 so far. They pretty much split the time, though Haddad has a few more at bats. So, you might think that Rascoe or myself would be called up any time- or already- since they can't seem to hit at that level. The thing is, they hit for power. Cincy has the "defense up the middle, power on the corners" philosophy it seems. So I could hit .350 but with only 3 HRs on the year (yea!!, I hit #3 this past week), I am stuck.

Anyway, I had a very good week, though the draft class had an outstanding week. I hit .350 but that was good for only 6th best of the group. In all, it was feast or famine as eight of us hit at least .300 but the others all hit .208 or worse. White Sox pitcher Nuke LaLoosh pitched a complete game for a win and Kai Nagata also won.

Personally, it was another frustrating week. The Dragons had an 0-7 record. It was not a fun time. I was pinch hit for three more times in weird circumstances. The three games in which they hit for me, I was hitting 5 of 9 with a triple, homerun and six RBIs. At this point, I try to just shrug it off. It's not easy with my being me, but it does no good to voice my displeasure or look like I am mad in front of my teammates or the coaching staff. I have decided to treat this as a growing experience, accept it, and try to use it to become a better player and a stronger person.

I hope it works.

Well, a breakthrough of sorts. They moved me up to 7th in the batting order. Yeah, baby, we are on fire now. Of course, there is the fact that they also pinch hit for me in three of the five games this week to temper my enthusiasm. In one of the games, on thursday, I was 2 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBIs when they took me out. I'm learning to live with it; not like it, but live with it.

I don't know what I'll be doing in the offseason, or rather what Cincinnati will expect of me, but I think I need to find somewhere else to stay, and I may have a great chance to get in with some of the other guys. One of the players is moving up to AA which leaves an open room at this B&B sort of place. Not really a B&B in that the guys live there full time, it's just that it's like a dorm or something with two meals a day thrown in (lunch on your own). I'm tired of eating out all the time or having soup and crap. I'm also tired of being all alone all the time, though I am a bit of a loner by nature, it does get old. Hope I get in.

Back in the real world, there were six of our class who hit over .300 this week, led by a monster week by AJ Tucker of the Expos. He hit .500 for the week with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs. WOW!!! It was a pretty good week for the pitchers, too, especially Rob Nielsen who got called back up to AAA this week. Hope he stays this time (no more injuries, dude). Speaking of injuries, our group has been fairly lucky so far, but Detroit's Wahoo McDaniel went down on wednesday with a sore elbow. It says he is day-to-day, but it also says he has 6 more days recovery time. Hope he's back next week.

We played seven games for the week, going 5-2. Nice rebound from the 0-7 of a couple weeks ago. On the other hand, pinch hit for in four of the games. Still over the .300 line though, so I guess it's alright for now.

The trade deadline passed without anyone getting traded from our draft class. I don't actually know if the deadline is for major leaguers only or minor leagues, too. Doesn't really matter at this point. Not really.

Six of us hit over .300 for the week, led by Riley Navraj of Pittsburg at .364. In a few years, he and I are gonna be having some hellacious battles for the all-star third baseman spot. At least I hope so. Wahoo McDaniel, who was injured last week, played in all but one game last week. Maybe he should have had more recuperation time, as he hit just .208, but it's good to see he is fine.

Slumps. Everybody gets them, right? It's hard not to have an off week or so from time to time. I was cruising along fine. Monday we win 7-6 in 10 innings. I go 1 for 3 with a walk and a SB. I get pinch hit for, naturally, but I am used to that by now and just roll with it. Tuesday the Dragons have an off day on the schedule. I was going to move into the boarding house place but I decided that we have only a few weeks left and I'm not staying in Dayton this off season, so I don't.

Well, wednesday comes and guess what? I have been put into the leadoff spot in the lineup... and that's where my slump begins. The rest of the week I am 2 for 21. They keep me hitting leadoff the whole week and even with my crappy week, the team continues to play well, going 4-2. Tomorrow starts a new week. Hope it's a better one.

On a brighter note, another of our class has hit the big time. Detroit called Wahoo McDaniel up on friday, and not to sit around like, unfortunately, the Mets Dennis Adkins has had to do. Wahoo got in three starts in his first week with the big boys and hit .273 for it, too.

K.A. Ton earned another PotG honor saturday for the Brewers with a 3 for 4 showing including a HR. Five draftmates hit over .300 for the week and AJ Tucker had 7 RBIs for the Expos in AAA. All four pitchers got to start a game this week, but Rob Nielsen also got his first save ever for the Padres AAA team.

X. Rebound

Slumps. I got out of mine. In a big way!!

And, I am now playing 3rd!!!! I can't believe it. They finally put me in. All week. Moved Rascoe to 2nd. I was so pumped I had my best week. So far I have not made an error though it is just 15 chances. Still, it's been awhile since I had any extended time in the field.

They put me in on wednesday, after a day off on tuesday. I proceeded to get four straight multi-hit games with a .563 average in the four games (we were off again on saturday...go figure). I only struck out once all week. I don't know what next week has in store, but I am still riding high from this week so I don't care.

Playing third. Leading off. Average over .300 again...I feel good, badadadum, I knew that I would, yeah.

It was a good week for pitchers as all of them had ERAs under four (though Tim Moungey didn't get a start in this week with the two days off). At the plate, it was definately feast or famine. You were either over .400 or you were .250 or worse. Speaking of worse, Rob Nielsen was sent back to AA again. That's, like, four times he has gone back and forth. Sucks for sure.

I love my manager.

(This week.)

Season is winding down and I still am hanging right around the .300 mark for the season. Originally, I had high hopes and expectations, but after the start I had, my new more-in-line-with-reality goal was/is to end the season at .300 or higher. I need a good ending to achieve that goal.

Still batting leadoff. Started the week as the third baseman but, after making my one and only error in 33 chances (.970 fielding percentage), they put me back at DH. The one consolation is that it is apparently against their rules to pinch hit for the leadoff batter as I wasn't hit for the whole week again.

Not a very good week for our draft class. Only three of us hit over .300 for the week, led by Tampa's Frank Justice at .409 with two HRs and six RBIs. On the bright side, Dennis Adkins actually was given a start by the Mets on friday. He was 2 for 6 on the week for a .333 clip.

Rob Nielsen should be very tired at this point. Yeah, you got it, he was sent back up to AAA again. I guess that's a good thing but he must be going crazy trying to figure it out. Plus, he got in two games but both were in relief.

XI. Finis

It's over. My first season as a professional baseball player. A frustrating learning experience to be sure, but if, as I hope, the Reds were just trying trying to test my mettle with all the a) not playing third, b) sitting out games, c) being pinch hit for every other day, d) etc..., I feel like I proved I could deal with it and come through.

As for achieving my goal of hitting .300 on the season. I started off well on monday with a 2 for 5, but tuesday and wednesday saw my average back below .300, going a combined 0 for 9. However, thursday was a very nice 3 for 6...back above. Friday was an off day and saturday I went 1 for 5 which put my average at exactly .300 on the year. With one game to play.

I would have a cool story that the skipper came to me and told me he would sit me out on the last day so I could hit .300 for the year, ala Ted Williams and his .400 average long ago...but he didn't. I was hitting leadoff. Another mini-test by the Reds? Everyone knew I wanted that .300 badly, especially after the start of the season I had. My progression, wee-by-week, looked like this:
  • .208
  • .143
  • .186
  • .208
  • .232
  • .226
  • .244
  • .247
  • .253
  • .269
  • .278
  • .281
  • .292
  • .298
  • .302
and hovered around .300 the rest of the way, except for that one week where I hit .125 or something awful and dropped down to .292 before rebounding the next week. Anyway, I went 3 for 5 with two doubles in the final game to finish at .303 and reach my modest goal which, of course, only became my goal because I started the season at or below .200 for a month. I made it.

Now, with the minor league season over, I wonder which draft classmates from AAA will get an end of season call-up. Not me, obviously, but it will be cool for some to get a taste.

Man, I'm sucking it big time.

At this rate, I'll turn out to be just an ordinary reliever, not even a closer. Bah!

San Diego has no clue what to do with me, apparently.

Did awful in the majors, but getting 31 AB's in 35 games is a very small sample size.

The season is over for everyone. There were no teams with a member of our draft class that made the major league playoffs. Not even close.

We can all hope for improvement on whatever kind of season we have had (and hope Jeff Nights comes back strong after missing most of the year with the Marlins).

Here are the rankings on the future prospect list as of the end of the major league season:
  • Riley Navraj #1 (+0)
  • Frank Justice #3 (+0)
  • Owen Hunter #5 (+0)
  • Wahoo McDaniel #11 (+2)
  • AJ Tucker #13 (+3)
  • Jace Hunter #16 (+2)
  • Dennis Adkins #17 (+6)
  • Rob Nielsen #18 (+3)
  • Al Mighty #22 (+3)
  • Joseph Keene #32 (+5)
  • Jeff Nights #100 (-81)
  • Grady Hatcher unranked ()
  • Kai Nagata unranked
  • Nuke LaLoosh unranked
  • Tim Moungey unranked
  • Mario Vizcaino unranked
  • K.A. Ton unranked
