Getting the tip to start the gravity turn at 10k has done wonders for my program. Orbiting has become very easy, and I can realistically start looking at other worlds. I managed to do a close fly-by of Minimus last night, but I didn't have enough fuel to get into an orbit. That should be a good challenge since the gravity is so low.
Seeing all of the new parts and navigation aids makes me a little jealous of the people who didn't get to experience the very early versions. Achieving orbit was a lot harder when you couldn't hit the 'M' key to see the orbit. |

I am still having problems trying to get docking down.

Docking might be my next goal. I managed to park a ship in orbit around Minimus. For fun, I set the orbit as generally circular at 8km above the surface. I'm going to assume that there aren't any mountains that high.
I'm quite sure docking will be all kinds of messy. In fact, I'll be proud of myself when I get the first space station piece into orbit. |

Just did my first Launch-to-Moon Landing! I got my Kerbal out, and couldn't get him back in the ship. Tried pressing and holding F to no avail. Any tips?

Launch-to-Minmus Landing! Next up...Mars/Duna? Or maybe Eve.

I could match orbits and get within a few meters, but could never get the docks lined up. I'd be all lined up, then switch views and be off 5 meters in the other direction. (poor depth perception, I guess) After a lot of frustration, I ended up getting an addon to complete the docking for me.

I am pretty close to that point. What addon did you get? I am thinking the difficulty curve of docking is lowering my enjoyment right now and am to the point that I just want to get it done. |

[Plugin, Parts, 0.18.1] Orbital Rendezvous and Docking Assistant v1.0.3 Currently using: Orbital Rendezvous and Docking Assistant - v1.0.3 but looking for something better. It has some issues, it's continuously making micro corrections. Which uses a lot of fuel and tends to make your ship wobble. So ,if you are trying to attaching a space station part, it might take a several tries. But if you are just docking capsules, it works great.

Finally, orbit achieved. Going to let Jebediah log a few laps and then I'll see if I can get him back home alive.

Got a launch vehicle and capsule that will reliably get into orbit with enough fuel for a trip to the Mun. I'm thinking next I deploy a handful of satelites, in preparation for a space station. I've got this idea to setup a station in Munar orbit.
Having lots of fun with this one. |

Been playing a few hours each night this week and its pretty sweet. Got Jeb to the moon and back last night and I'm not sure I remember such a feeling of accomplishment from a game in a long while... (I had to save/re-load probably 10 times to get the munar landing right though . . .)
Anyone have a link to a good tutorial or explanation on maneuvers? I feel like I'm missing something potentially huge by knowing nothing about them! Last edited by Daimyo : 01-18-2013 at 05:31 PM. |

Daimyo, I've been watching some of Scott Manley's YouTube videos. Don't know if there are better ones, but his seem pretty solid and easy to follow.

And Jebediah is home safe and sound. Time to go experimenting.

Yeah, Jeb's a go getter. After his first sucessful orbit and return he manned three more missions last night. One failed to reach orbit, one exploded on the launch pad but he survived, and the fourth time was again successful reaching and returning from orbit. Even had an almost perfect circular orbit going on trip #4.

Nice to see this getting some love. FOFC is the type of audience that should love this game.

Thanks for this recommendation. I finally was able to dock a few times on my own, but man it is just super tedious. It really feels like a job, spending several minutes to close the last few hundred meters very carefully. This plugin makes that part a little simpler, and returns this game to a fun, enjoyable time waster for me. Now I can go back to trying to build a inter-planetary super cruiser in orbit by piecing together several ships! |

Months later, I finally broke down and picked this up.
The Archon Project was a glorious time for the Kerbals. Their first satellite would soon be in the skies! ...Archon VI, VIII, and IX did actually make it. The others...not so much. And I think Archon VIII is in a slowly decaying orbit, making its death inevitable, with no fuel for orbital corrections. Project Spartan was thusly announced, in an attempt to build a space plane. Bill Kerbal was the Spartan Project's first test pilot. Spartan I gloriously launched...lost control, and exploded on the runway. Rest in Peace, Bill. This game should be named North Korean Space Program. |

One of my friends at work, his background isn't space and he works in Flight Assurance, so he doesn't get into the particulars of the design of the vehicles or the mission planning...he started playing this. He came in one day with a big smile on his face, "I finally understand what you guys are talking about!"
Needless to say, this game has zero appeal to me..why would I want to play a game of my job? But I've heard good things about it, it's apparently well-done from a "how stuff really works" type perspective. /tk

Grabbing the demo to this right now.. I guess I will be killing a lot of lil' dudes while I blunder my way through building malfunctioning rockets.

I'm going to pretend I am an evil dictator hell bent on making it to space, even if it requires slow, expensive genocide.

Career play has been added now, you need to perform missions and gather science points to unlock equipment. Adds a bit of playability to it all.

I got back in to playing this. The game was already outstanding when I played it over a year ago, but has made leaps and bounds since that time. Career mode is a fun way to break in a newer user since you don't get overwhelmed. There's so much stuff now - planetary bases, space stations, vehicles, probes, asteroid capture.
It's probably the most fun pure sandbox game I've played since the original SimCity. |

Bought this a couple of weeks ago, and can't stop playing. So totally hooked. Very fun, but beyond frustrating game.
