When the game first came out, sn00p got busy and immediately produced a graphics set that puts what Firaxis did to shame because nearly everyone recognized how awkward it looked. Your screenshots of the Pimple Mountains reminded me. Don't know if you can find his graphics set but it make your screenshots look nicer, imo.

Well, you're earning you're "curmudgeon" title in this thread, Ornery-doo-doo. sn00p's graphic set is very impressive - I've just never bothered to try making those kinds of changes to the game - the current graphics don't really bother me. Is it possible to change them once the game is already started? I wouldn't mind giving it a shot - and I'm sure I can find it (in fact, I think it might have been included with the PTW expansion CD). |

Yeah, I intend to slap them around a bit before they have legions swarming all over the place. The AI must cheat like crazy on Deity level... EVERYBODY has like 6 cities already, and tons of troops marching around, not to mention that they're keeping a step or two ahead in the tech race. I'm trying to decide whether or not to pay the Celts and/or Russians to ally agains Rome - I think I can handle them alone, but I'd hate for the Romans to sign an allegiance with one or both of them against me. |

The AI, on levels past Warlord, starts with extra units, and they are programmed to make better trade deals with other AI, the higher the diff goes.
On deity, they get something like 4 settlers to start, and I think 8 warriors. It's insane. |

Chapter Two - A Forge Of Heroes
Chapter Two - A Forge Of Heroes
Prior to the unprovoked aggression of Rome, America had been a quiet land, and in fact the smallest nation in the world. Ceasar's mistake had been his assumption that this meant the Americans would be easy prey. His miscalculation would doom his people, and spark a great shift in the balance of power across the continent and the world. Anvils sang across the land as America prepared to hurl a fist of iron against their northern aggressors. The first swordsmen were equipped and trained at Celeval in 1075 B.C., and immediately were deployed to eradicate the hordes of Roman warriors and archers swarming around the city's perimeter. Stone and wood fared poorly against iron, and the battle was swift and decisive. The same year, Chief Bush sent an envoy to Entremont and proposed an alliance against the Romans. Chief Brennus balked at first, but was persuaded with a sizeable sum of gold. The mighty Celts were now on the side of justice. By 1150 B.C., Roman forces had been completely expelled from American soil. That same year, a grizzled gold prospector named Atatange, weary of wandering the west with little to show for it, settled on the coast, and named the town after himself. Several companies of American swordsmen marched north towards Pompeii. They would take the fight to the Romans now. |

Chapter Three - The Battle Of Pompeii
Chapter Three - The Battle Of Pompeii
1500 B.C. General JeeberD leaned on the hilt of his sword, looked across the plain at the city of Pompeii, and thought of his family. A lifetime ago, he had been a modest farmer with a small home in the Celeval foothills. He was never rich, but he had a comfortable home, a wife, and three small children. He had never seen a Roman before one of their arrows had pierced his side and left him for dead while he watched his wife raped and murdered and his children butchered. But only part of him died that day. What remained lived on. "For today," he said aloud, to no one in particular. Vexroid's company of horsemen had already begun the assault on Pompeii, and had weakened the Roman defenses. What was left would be for his men to decide, and there was little doubt what their conclusion would be. JeeberD's story was shared by nearly every one of the men he was about to lead into battle, and at last the Romans would feel the wrath of the righteous anger of America. JeeberD turned to face his men, who were standing in formation and awaiting the order to charge. He raised his sword high and shouted to them, "They have shed the blood of our wives and children! We shall feed our hunger for vengeance upon them this day! Do not fear death, for death can take nothing more from us than Rome already has! Make ready!" With that, the entire company drew their swords and let out a fierce howl of anger as they charged across the plain towards the walls of Pompeii. Nine hours later, covered in the blood of countless Romans, JeeberD and his men gathered at the gates of the city and fixed the heads of enemy leaders upon their own spears. Pompeii had been taken, and was renamed for the gallant general who had lost so much on his way there. Last edited by Franklinnoble : 08-26-2003 at 06:06 PM. |

Chapter Four - A New World
Chapter Four - A New World
For over a hundred years, war raged on in the north along the border with Rome. America continued to mass troops and send them to JeeberD to reinforce defenses and prepare for a decisive surge into the heart of the Roman empire. Back in Franklin, there was a period of upheaval as the people were no longer happy with a mere chieftain as a leader - they wanted a divinely inspired King, like the Irish had. After a few years of general revolt and disorder (mostly which was due to the Bush family removing undesireable political adversaries), a coronation of King Bush the First was held in 1375. Just weeks after assuming the crown, the new King was brough news from the west. The far west. American vessels had crossed the great seas and discovered a new continent, populated with many nations. Diplomatic envoys were sent without delay, and embassies were established in the capitol cities of England, France, Germany, and Mongolia. Ambassadors report that their military and scientific development is similar to America's, and collectively very formidable. *** In 1350 B.C., a great column of men and horses marched north towards the Roman city of Neapolis. With General Vexroid leading a company of horsemen to the west of the city, several companies of swordsman began a siege from the east. The Romans proved tougher than expected. The swordsmen were nearly completely annihilated, and Vexriod's company suffered heavy casualties. Vexroid himself had lost most of his left arm in the battle, but refused to retreat. Standing on the banks of the river, the general sat tall in his saddle and spoke to his men. "I know you are tired. Many of our brothers have died this day, and many still may die, but we must press on. Neapolis is nearly beaten. If we strike now, the city will be ours. If we wait to regroup, Roman reinforcements will arrive, and it may be years before we have this opportunity again. I ask you now to pick up your spears and make one last charge with me." Even the most sorely wounded rose to re-mount their horses and ride again into Neapolis. General Vexroid had been right - the Romans were severely weakened, and fell swiftly under the hooves of the American assault. The gamble had worked, and the city was renamed for the man who had rolled the dice. *** 1200 B.C. They called him Blade, because a Roman knife had pierced his thigh in the battle of JeeberD and broken off. Most of the blade remained, and he walked with a limp since. Decorated for valor but unfit for further military service, he had been commissioned by the King to seek out new lands to settle. Much of the west was still untamed, and he had heard from a merchant in Atatange that there were unusually high deposits of silkworms in the forests to the north, so he had led his group of settlers there, and founded a city that he hoped would someday bring great riches to his people. *** The tide had turned. With the battle of Vexroid, America had crushed the largest remainder of the Roman army. Scores of fresh troops were arriving daily at Vexroid and sent marching north towards Rome, where America would bring the battle right to Ceasar's front door. |

Chapter Five - The Fall Of Rome
Chapter Five - The Fall of Rome
1150 B.C. For nearly 3,000 years, the great city of Rome had been the centerpiece of a shining empire, and the heart of convergence for the collective enlightenment of one of the world's most advanced cultures. Romans had once fondly referred to the city as "The Foci," which, roughly translated, is latin for hearth and home. It was the pride of an entire race. As Julius Ceasar looked across the fields south of the city from the balcony of the imperial palace, he knew it would all soon end. Innumerable columns of American troops marched towards the city, and before the sun would set this day, Rome would belong to America. Most of the population had already begun to flee. In the six hundred years that Rome had been at war, America had only grown stronger, and by now, there was no stopping them. If it had been just the Americans, perhaps the empire could have survived the onslaught, but Bush had been wise to bribe the Celts into an alliance. As America chipped away at the south, Ireland attacked from the east. Their Gallic swordsmen were swift and lethal, and Rome could not bear the burden of such a war on two fronts. When Neapolis fell, the plunder of Rome was assured. Ceasar had no army in the south any longer. The Americans regrouped and prepared for the offensive that was about to unfold. Ceasar bowed his head. Why had Rome provoked the wrath of these people? It seemed simple enough at the time. America was small. Rome was not. America's military was weak. Rome's was not. America was wealthy. Rome was not. Rome should demand wealth from the small and weak. America refused to pay tribute to their bigger neighbor, and Rome had but to invade and take it. Ah, but while money may not buy happiness, it can buy swords and spears. Many of them. Perhaps if the initial attack on Celeval had succeeded, things would be different. Instead, the Americans were able to weather the initial barrage, and the rest was now history. Ceasar turned away from the balcony and headed for the stables. He would have to leave Rome immediately if he did not wish to have his head upon a spear by nightfall. Rome would continue to fight, but the empire had been crushed. All that remained was the faint hope for survival. When American troops captured the palace later that day, they declared that Rome was no longer the "hearth and home" of the empire, and re-named the city The Afoci as an eternal reminder to the enemies of America. Chapter Six - Perpetual War
Chapter Six - Perpetual War
As Ceasar fled, there were events in the south of America that had captured the attention of the King in Franklin. Russian troops had been spotted in the mountains between Franklin and Sachmo. Immediately, an envoy was sent to Moscow to demand an explaination and the removal of the troops. Catherine complied, and pleaded ignorance regarding the incident. In 1125 B.C., King Brennus requested an audience in Franklin. The agreement for a military alliance against Rome had expired, and he did not wish to renew it. What he really meant was that, yes, his troops were enjoying the spoils of war, but he'd like to milk more money out of keeping a "formal" alliance with America. Out of deference to their cash-strapped allies, America renews the agreement with an offer of communications with the nations of the new world and 25 pounds of gold. Of course, the Celts need to learn a thing or two about managing their money - in 1100 B.C., while the war with Rome is already decided, they sign a military alliance with France against the Romans. No doubt Joan of Ark will enjoy lining her coffers with Celtic gold knowing full well that Rome will be a distant memory before her troops can arrive. *** 1075 B.C. The siege on Antium, the new capitol of Rome, was bloody. Nearly the entire force that had taken Rome had been wiped out in the assault, and that was after two companies of Gallic swordsmen had been exhausted in softening their defenses. The final breakthrough had been made by General Galesburg's company of horsemen. Galesburg had earned the nickname "Coffee Warlord" for his habit of feeding his horses coffee beans before every battle. He was convinced the beasts ran faster under the influence, even if they did always seem nervous and jittery. One of his men hung a hand-painted sign on the gates of the city that read "Coffee Warlordia" in jest after the decisive battle. The name stuck. That same year, scouts near Blade reported a massive uprising of barbarians in the north. Citizens of the city remained confident that their defenses would hold strong, as the King had just begun to issue stronger iron armor and pikes to all the spearmen in the empire. Russian troops were again caught wandering the mountains near Sachmo, and again asked to leave. This time, however, they refused. King Bush sent an envoy to Moscow and demanded that the troops leave, or they would be considered a hostile invasion force. Catherine scoffed, and replied with a declaration of war. Had she learned nothing from the example made of the Romans? Bush immediately contacted King Brennus, who was all too happy to join forces against the Russians (for a small sum of gold, of course). Someday, the Celtic love of war might prove problematic, but today, their swords are a welcome ally against the Russian threat. In the north, the war with Rome, while in it's waning stages, continued. During the battle for Pisae, a company of swordsmen found themselves in disarray as their captain was struck down by a Roman spear. A young soldier named RendeR began to rally his comrades in the midst of the battle, and led the final charge into the city. He emerged as a great and respected leader, and the town was re-named for him. General RendeR was assigned to The Afoci to assemble an army. But it would be for others to finish off the few remaining Roman settlements. RendeR's army would be sent southeast - to Russia. Why? Actually, it's the Mongols that I expected to be tough. I deliberately made one starting position on the map as nice as my own on the other continent - just to be sure I had a solid adversary late in the game. The Mongols ended up getting it. I don't expect to wage much war with any of the nations overseas before the modern era - too hard to move large numbers of troops before the advent of transports and the ability to airdrop. If anyone overseas declares war, I'll just make alliances and play coastal defense against whatever they send over. My long-term plan is to eventually dominate the continent, and then the world!
