Chicago has a magic number of 6 in the AL East, Winnemucca a M# of 5 in the AL West. Gettysburg has a M# of 6 in the NL East, while the NL West remains up for grabs. Denver and Brooklyn are a distant 6 and 7 games back respectively of the NL Wild Card, it's essentially a race between the two teams in the NL West to determine who might end up with the NL bye or who'll be stuck in the elimination series.

In the AL, Grand Rapids and Memphis are both 3 games out of the wild card lead.

So with 5 days left in the regular season, there's just not a lot of drama to be found in the '69 season as opposed to the past few years where it's gone down to the wire.

Los Angeles claims the NL bye, Winnemucca the AL's and so the elimination series will feature Gettysburg v. Columbus in the Nationwide League and St. Louis v. Chicago in the Associated League.

For a moment it looked like Grand Rapids might sneak in. That window wasn't really that far open. Looking forward to tinkering with the franchise over the next week.

Congrats to the playoff teams.

Gomers are aiming to become just the 5th team in SLOP history to repeat as champion. The previous repeat champs were Milwaukee ('38-39), Carolina ('51-'52) Brooklyn ('53-'54) and Winnemucca ('56-'58). Apparently the 50s were repeat champion time.

It would be funnier to let the worst records have the byes.

For the newbs, LOSERS CUP is a sometimes simulated playoff for the non-playoff teams. It's for bragging rights. This year we've secured a sponsor, so you'll get a small bonus if you win it.

LOSERS CUP FINALS GAME 7:
Cuyahoga 10, Lake Tahoe 8

Box score attached because it was that good a game. Cuyahoga broke an 8-8 tie in the top of the 9th with two runs and the Spiders claim this year's LOSERS Cup.

That would be pretty hilarious. If I hadn't started before I saw this, I would've switched it.

PLAYOFF PREVIEW

After years of tanking, shrewd moves and good drafting, wolvie's Los Angeles Villains are making their 3rd playoff appearance in 4 years, this time claiming their 2nd NL West title and first-ever NL bye. There simply isn't a better offensive team in SLOP. Ron Cowles, Pat Rhodes and Ruben Rivero give the team a potent 3-4-5 order that few can rival.

Eddie Santos has emerged into an ace and C.J. Applegate and Dave Renninger are servicable members of the rotation giving the club the kind of team that could win a short series, especially if the bats are doing what they need to be.

vs.
If there's a weakness, it's below-average pitching against either a Gettysburg or Columbus club that will come equipped with two of the best rotations in SLOP in the LCS.

In the NL Elimination Series, the Columbus Crusaders make their 4th straight playoff appearance against the defending champion Gettysburg Gomers who are making their 7th playoff appearance in eight years, in the pursuit of their 3rd title in franchise history.

These clubs are identical, in that, they both have extremely good pitching. The real difference is whose offense will show up ready to rock. Columbus has so many weapons in guys like NL MVP candidate Jimmy Speegle and .400 hitter A.J. Hoogland, Dave Bohannon and half a dozen others who can contribute on any given night.

But if Columbus has the vice-grip on offense, Gettysburg owns it on pitching. Defending Pitcher of the Year Tristan Converse had another stellar year amidst the offense, Jaime Timberlake, Ian Chapman and Tim Zaets are all elite pitchers in their own right. Not to mention, the G-men have the best bullpen in the NL.

It won't take many runs for the Gomers to secure a lead and for that reason, you have to think the defending champs have the edge in the NLES.

The defending AL champion Lake Monsters of Winnemucca return to the post-season sporting probably AL Rookie of the Year Jonathan Widener who they acquired in last year's SuperDraft, because in the only year they missed the post-season in the past 14 years, the club managed to nab the #2 pick in the draft lottery.

Led by Nate Fields, Cruz Torres and their usual cast of elite pitchers, the Mucks are back in the drivers seat of the AL and look to be the team to beat.

vs.

Meanwhile, in the AL Elimination Series, we have the two-time defending AL East champion Chicago Hornets gunning for their first SLOP title in twenty years with what's likely their most complete roster since those days. Aging Brad Scots appears to have done enough to get his 2nd Pitcher of the Year and Tony Archuleta proves that you shouldn't just look at stars and ratings when evaluating a player, because he went 20-8.

Offensively, the Hornets boast stalwarts including Junior Garza, T.J. Graber, Tommy Murphy and Tom Stressman all of whom had over 100 RBI this year. But the Hornets lack a strong bullpen and the depth St. Louis boasts. But in a short series, it'll come down to who shows up at critical junctures. Meanwhile, St. Louis made several "make or break" blockbusters at the trade deadline acquiring former Spiders ace Diego Carrasco and reacquiring Willie Leon from Vegas, the latter of whom got torched in his St. Louis starts. Still, if this team can find its mojo, the pitching staff is one of SLOP's best, as Tony Llamas and Lusala Chaga are outstanding.

Offensively, D.J. Struchen, Joey Moore and likely AL rookie of the year Tony Monighetti will steer the Aviators plane this post-season. On paper, this team should be better than the 86 wins they notched in the regular season, but given they can't figure out what they want to be. If they can put it together, they'll be a team no one wants to face or they'll flame out quickly. I don't think it'll go either way.

With the consolidation of playoffs, this is probably the most "open" year we've seen with any of the six teams eligible having pretty much the right components to win a championship.

Should be exciting.

All exports are in except Chicago's...so we'll wait just until the normal deadline to go ahead and do this thing. (Plus, I'm cooking so really...I couldn't start now if I wanted to.)
