The gear is stowed, the lights mostly out, the room empty aside from one man still sitting at his stall. The only sound is that of a tap dripping.

::drip::

Kronside still sits there, eyes closed, his jersey still on and a ball gripped in his right hand.

::drip::

His fingers move back and forth on it, from two seam fastball to circle change. Back to the fastball then into a curve.

::drip::

Finally it's gripped in the white knuckled fashion of what can only be described as a choke hold.

::drip::

The whiteness spreads from the knuckles down the fingers until his hand starts shaking either in fury or just from the tension.

::drip::

His eyes snap open, staring directly at the tap maybe 30 feet away. Another drop forms, slowly building, and as Jace's entire arm begins to tremble from the force of his grip, it falls.

::drip::

Like an explosion he launches himself from his seat, his arm reared back in an arc of expelled rage. The ball whistles through the air as his body contorts, nearly sending him to the ground. There is a shattering crescendo as Kronside stands, his back to the offending sink.

The sound of his cleats retreating down the tunnel and that of broken glass coming to rest is only disturbed by one thing.

::drip::

Two inches outside again.

FOFC - Dynasty Update

Guys, I'm going to try and update the team nicknames to make it clearer who each team is in the writeups (assuming the game will allow me to make the change now that the season has started). Too many teams right now are listed as All Stars, HOFers, etc.

I'm open for suggestions of team names:

Here are some of the existing ones, that may be OK:

Pre-Americans
Pre-Nationals
Post Americans
Post Nationals
Dead Ball Era - Deads
Old Timers - Oldies (could change to Ancients)
Left Out - Left Outers (thinking about changing to the Leftovers)
Turn of Century - Centuries (thinking about Centurions)

The others are definately open, here are some thoughts:

Caribbean - Estrellas
Late 20th Century - Modern Stars
Negro League 1 - Ones
Negro League 2 - Twos (Toos)
Japanese - JHOF
FOFC - ???

Feel free to chime in with suggestions.

FOFC - Manager Update

It's Wednesday morning and I've slept in. A 2 - 0 start allows managers to breath a little bit. I have a leisurely breakfast and head to the park. The entire drive I'm trying to determine my best course of action...do I work some players into the lineup or keep going with what is working? I know Tucker is staying in the lineup, he's one of the few hitting, and I know Hays is going to get back in as well, but other than that I'm not positive. My gut feeling is to stick with the status quo, at least for the most part. I think we'll be going up against Ted Lyons tonight. He's a pretty good righty and ironically can be tough on lefties. I'll have to think some more about the lineup.

I do however, feel good about the pitching. Mighty will be starting and hopefully, he'll be able to keep the big lefty bats in their lineup, Ruth and Gehrig quite - not sure why I should think that Nielsen is a tough leftie and Ruth tripled off of him. You know...Cobb's comment about Ruth 'running well for a fat guy' is absolutely right. That big mother can motor. All the pitchers in the pin are ready to go so we should be fine there.

My cell phone rings...

"Hello"

"Mr. Breeze?" the caller asks as if someone else should be answering this phone."

"Yes, who's this?"

"This is Joe Cain the facilities administrator."

I think to myself, 'facilities administrator, facilities admini...oh yes the janitor.' "Oh yeah Joe, what's up?"

"There's been some damage to the bathroom in the locker room."

"Damage?"

"Yes sir, I just though you should be aware."

"Any idea who did it?"

"No but security is looking into it." Joe answers matter of factly.

"Thanks Joe. I'll be in shortly. You come get me if I can be of any help."

I hang up and start talking to myself, "We're 2 and 0. Who could have gotten pissed enough at this point to wreck the bathroom..."

FOFC - Player Update

As I'm studying scounting reports I get a knock on my door.

"Come in."

The door opens and little guy who looks like a body builder walks in. It's Joe Cain the janitor. With a sheepish look on his face he says, "Ah, coach. The security guys have told me they think Jace Kronside broke the mirror in the bathroom."

"OK?" I say in a tone indicating I want to know what you want me to do about it.

"They would like you to talk to him about it, they want to know why he did it and what he plans to do about it."

"Fine" I say and dismiss Joe, thinking to myself, 'why the hell do you think he did it? He was pissed about giving up a run last night. IDIOTS'

Joe Cain the janitor exits my office and I wait a few minutes before walking out. I move around the locker room searching for Jace Kronside. His bag is in the locker so I know he's arrived at the park. I ask around and am told by Bo Knowles that he thought he was headed to the bull pen with some midevil torture device.

I roll my eyes and head that way. When I get to the bull pen sure enough he's setting up a tri-level, squarish, wooden device. I know I need to talk to him about the broken bathrooom mirror but I have to make sure I know what's going on:

"Ah Jace, what'cha doing? You sure that thing is safe?"

Kronside steps back from the wooden frame, looking down.

"Sorry skip, just figured I needed to get some extra tosses in and didn't want to bother any of the catchers."

Turning again, Jace pulls pop cans out of a bag laying by his feet and starts fitting them into the clamps on the frame. Once he's done there are 9 cans fitted, 3 on each level, inside, outside and middle.

"Well it seems safe enough, I guess I'm ok with it as long as Sal is."

"By the way, I need to talk to you about an incident with a mirror." I say, trying real hard to keep a straight face. "Joe Cain the janitor told me about it this morning and the security guards apparentely determined you had something to do with it - I don't know how they figured that out, God I hope they don't have cameras in the bathroom - but anyway they said to talk with you about it - so I'm talking."

Kronside pauses as he bends down to pick up a bag full of baseballs. A moment later he grasps the bag and rises, looking back at his manager, a tinge of red to his face and looking more than a bit embarrassed.

"Yeah. I wanted to talk to you about that this morning, but when you weren't here I figured I'd get some throws in first. You see, I was sitting there, and the tap was dripping, and...well...it just kept dripping and...well, I missed. Again."

The big man is silent for a moment, clearly knowing how assinine this all sounds.

"Would it be easier to pay for it now or to just take it out of my pay?"

"Ah...I see. Water dripping is pretty annoying. I'll tell Joe to get that fixed. As for the mirror" I pause trying to think of the best way to phrase this "I'll figure something out. I'll tell them it tried to attack you and you were only defending yourself. Hell, if it's the security guard that checked my id the other day he might actually believe that."

I start walking off, but I turn back and say, "You know son, I put you in a pretty tough spot last night. Man on 3rd, only 1 out and some pretty good hitters coming up. I wasn't real happy with the walks, but I would have been surprised it they hadn't been able to at least generate a sac fly." I begin walking off again, then turn back and add "And you struck out Gehrig. He went around on that pitch, it was a horrible call by the umpires."

He hits a routine pop just left of Blade
Barrett is under it...
And takes it in for the easy out

Simmons is down on strikes
That's three outs here in
the top of the first
At the end of one half inning,

Lazzeri and Cronin converge on it
It's fielded by Lazzeri who fires to first
SAFE is the call by the ump
Close play - but replays indicate Tucker's speed pays off as he just does beat the throw.!!

GAME 3 - Wednesday, April 4th - Post Game

As we file into the locker room following the onfield post game congratulations, I strategically position myself in a corner so I can get everyone's attention.

A few minutes later, I yell, "Nice work gentlemen. I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am to sweep that team, and not only did we sweep them, but we really held one of the most prolific offenses in check for 3 straight games. Again congrats."

***Cheers****

"Now, we have an off day tomorrow, so let's plan on getting to the ball park around 2, we'll do some infield/outfield drills, take some batting practice on the field and let the pitchers take their normal side sessions. We'll take the field again on Friday against the Old Timers and Hunter will get the ball." I pause for a few seconds to let my words sink in. "Nice job guys - have fun tonight and I'll see you tomorrow afternoon."

FOFC - Manager Update

With a day off I decide to take the opportunity to spend some quality time with my wife. We go to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for dinner and enjoy it tremedously. On the drive home we are talking with the radio in the background. My ear picks up the sounder indicating a sports update. I tune out my wife's dialog about painting the dinning room an olive green color and a subtly listen to the barely audible voice...

...and in baseball today the Pre-Nats once again top the Negro Twos, the Dead Ballers come up short against the Post Americans, the Negro Ones beat the Old Timers - they should be ashamed of themselves for beating old people, the Late 20ths get another win, the Centurions best the Post Nationals and the Left Outs - win out over the Estrellas....

"What do you think?" my wife asks.

"I agree totally," I say without hesitation.

"You didn't hear a word I said did you?"

"Yes I did, you want to paint the dining room olive green." I argue.

"That was 2 topics ago." she replys

"Um..."

"Ah ha, now what do you have to say for yourself?"

"Um...Dinner sure was good?" and yes that was phrased as a question.

"Yes it was, and I'm glad you think the dining room will look good in olive green, with tan trim." she replys with a sly smile on her lips.

I glance over and say, "You mean my answer about the paint color was right?"

"Sure, but I knew you weren't listening, I figured I'd make you sweat a little."

I snicker, and make a mental note not to think about baseball the rest of the night. Tomorrow we have to play the Old Timers, I'll have enough to think about at that point.

Because I knew who had won all the games last night, I was in no hurry to read the paper. I wait until just before game time to actually look at the write ups.

GAME 5 - Saturday, April 7th - Pregame

I had numerous decisions to make following our first lost, not the least of which was who should start. Babson told me he was ready to go, the day off helped that, so I elected to go back to him in this game. I also decided Terp's production had dropped from the Spring and it was time to give Nights another shot. Gonzo's 2 for 4 night earned him another start.

GAME 6 - Sunday, April 8th - Radio Broadcast

A hanging curve...
Hamilton laces it hard just
to the right of Nights
He makes a stab at it...
Just misses it!
It's on into the outfield for a single
A wide turn by Billy...
but he'll stay at first
as the ball comes in

Hamilton takes a three step lead
Another throw...
Nielsen's five throws over
have been effective
Hamilton has a small lead now
He must be getting tired
from diving back in!

The ball is low and outside
Did he go around?
The umpire says no
Ball four
For Kelly, that's 1 walk today

Curve, up high...
Delahanty rips it to right...
Nielsen hung that breaking ball
However, Ed got under it just a bit
Pflaggstettler started back on it
Now he's coming in...
He's under it and makes the easy catch
"Can of Corn"
And there's one away

A sinking fastball...
Swung right through it... STRIKE THREE
Two down

Hit in the air to left
Camped under it is Gunner
And he has it
And that will do it for Old Timers

Sinking fastball...
Blade swings...
Raps a hard ground ball
right at Davis...
He snares it easily, throws to first...
Out by a step
One gone for FOFC in the bottom of the 1st

Tucker tries to hold up, but can't
He pops one into short right
Thompson is coming in hard...
Kelly is racing with his
back to the infield
And neither is going to get it!
Tucker is on with the "excuse me" single!

Tucker sneaks away from the base
Radbourn fires trying to
pick the runner...
Tucker scurries back quickly...
He just avoided the tag!
He should have dove back...
He almost got caught
I'm sure Joe Adcock will chat with him
It's something a good first
base coach does

That's ball four
Nights will trot down to first
Tucker is now down on second

Base hit to left for Pflaggstettler
Dick Howser is giving the green light...
The throw is coming home...
Aggressive baserunning by FOFC...
Not cut-off...
Tucker scores!
Trailing runners advance.

Just outside with a fastball
Radbourn is visibly upset...
Ewing is quickly out to calm him down
Kelly comes over as well
Nights on third, Pflaggstettler
on second and Fouts on first
They'll be loaded up for David Gonzalez

The batter checks his swing
Here's the appeal
Gonzalez swung, that's strike three
Gonzalez isn't happy at all with that call
Radbourn needs one more out
to get out of this jam

Drilled on the ground to short
Taken by Davis
Tosses to second
He's out
Score It: 6-4
The runner on first, Fouts, is out
That wraps up the inning for FOFC
So After 1 inning
FOFC has one run, 2 hits and no errors
While Old Timers has no runs,
one hit and no errors
FOFC has left 3 stranded
Old Timers has failed to bring home 2

Kelly takes the pitch...
That one is low for a ball... WAIT
The umpire says that one caught the knees
Kelly is out on strikes
One up, one down

It's a quail shot headed
towards the outfield
Blade takes off after it...
Leaps...
And Davis is OUT!
Very impressive range shown on that play!
Barrett is very fine fielder!
Two down
Nielsen retires the first
two Old Timers batters

There's a roller down at Fouts
He's in front of it...
It rolls right between the wickets!
Error on Dan Fouts as he didn't
get his glove down
Maybe a bit too easy for him

Changeup...
Ties Radbourn up in knots
An awkward swinging strike three!
Nielsen shuts down Old Timers
here in the top of the 2nd
So FOFC still with the lead
as we go to a commercial break

There's a high pop in front of the plate
Looks like the ball is drifting foul
Ewing calls for it
and makes the play
As the ump signals a foul ball
One gone for FOFC

Ground ball through the middle
Davis ranges behind second
Nice pick up...
Twists and fires it
OUT!
Two down
Old Hoss Radbourn retires
the first two batters in a row

Lifted in the air, back this way
The catcher, Ewing, will
take it for the out
That's the third out of the inning
Three up, three down
It's 1-0, FOFC

The batter checks his swing
Here's the appeal
Hamilton swung, that's strike three
Hamilton isn't happy at all with that call
That's one away

Sharp breaking curveball...
Kelly reaches for it...
Hits a two bouncer right to Nights...
Grabs it easily...
Fires a bullet to Gonzalez at first!
Kelly is out easily
Two down
Rob Nielsen retires
the first two batters in order

He rips a grounder to first
Nielsen takes the flip from Gonzalez
Score It: 3-1
That does it for Old Timers
in the top of the 3rd

It's a dying quail headed
towards the outfield
OHHHHH, snagged by a retreating
Anson for the out
Outstanding range shown on that play!
One up, one down for FOFC

Swung on and hit sharply to short
Davis plays it on one hop
Over to Anson...
Out of there!
Two gone for FOFC

Change-up, Pflaggstettler
is looking for it...
He smacks a deep fly to left-center...
Hamilton racing back...
At the warning track...
Waits...
Leaps...
Off the fence!
Hamilton chases it down
Firing a strong throw back in
They'll never get Pflaggstettler
The slide...
In there!
It's a double for Persimmon Pflaggstettler

A slider by Radbourn
Fouts gets good wood on it...
Hamilton back-pedals quickly...
Up with his glove...
Out!
That's all for the All Stars
No runs, one hit, no errors and
one man left on base...
We've played three, here...
FOFC on top 1 to 0

Hard slider, paints the inside corner
Thompson gets a piece of it...
Slams a sharp grounder to the right side
Gonzalez grabs it...
Races to first...
Beats Thompson for the out
One out
Due up next is Cap Anson

Slow ground ball
Blade is charging it
He fires it to first
He's OUT
One more chance for Old Timers
in the top of the 4th

In the air to right
Man it is really hit...
The only question is whether
it will stay fair
It's...
Gone! Kelly has just tied
the game at 1 a piece!
Kelly gets number 2 in 1900

There's a cue shot off the
end of the bat by Davis
Blade makes the routine catch
of the soft liner
That retires the side
The Ancients score 1 run in the inning
After 3 and a half innings,
The score is tied at 1

Hit right back to Radbourn
On to first and Gonzalez is gone
One down for FOFC
Harry Hays is still in the on-deck circle
and Stan Gunner is looking
for a bat in the dugout

Hays hits a screamer at George Davis
Davis picks it up and fires to first
The throw pulls Anson off the bag
Anson swipes with the glove

Hays is out!
Nice play by Anson
One more chance for FOFC this inning

A hot shot on the ground to Kelly
He's got it cleanly on one hop...
Over to first and Gunner is out
1-2-3, nothing across...

Ewing fights one off his fists
It's lined weakly to the left of short
Nights is over quickly
Easy out
One away...
Gonzalez is coming over to the mound...
He wants to chat with the pitcher...
Here comes Fouts also...
Now they return to their positions

Curveball in the dirt
Swung on and missed...Strike three
Hays fumbles it,
but quickly recovers to tag Radbourn
Two up, two down

It's a routine fly into right
Pflaggstettler ranges over and reaches up
This should do it...
And Pflaggstettler grabs it for the out
That does it for Old Timers
in the top of the 5th
The ground crew, headed up by John Deere,
is coming out to smooth the infield dirt
The fans get a kick out of them
as they sometimes put down their rakes
and do a little "dance" to the music

Nielsen cuts on a curve that
misses in the dirt
That ball is trapped nicely by Ewing
Nielsen was badly fooled by Radbourn's
big breaking curve
STRIKE THREE!
Rob was a little overanxious
One down for FOFC
Barrett Blade is in the on-deck circle
ready to make his way to
the plate for FOFC

Hard ground ball to third
Taken by Kelly
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 5-3
We're all tied up at 1 with
two away this inning

Good slider, inside part of the plate
Tucker gets the bat on it...
Slams a sharp grounder to the right side
Kelly grabs it...
Throws to first...
OUT!
That does it for the All Stars
So at the end of five complete
it is all knotted up at 1

There's a fly ball to Stan Gunner
Gunner circles under it...
He makes the play
One down, nobody on
Game tied

Strike three swinging...
Now that is something you
don't see very often
Delahanty rarely ever strikes out
But Nielsen got him that time!
Two up, two down for Old Timers

High heater from Nielsen...
Thompson cuts at it...
Hits a bouncer right side...
It goes by the diving Blade and Gonzalez
It's into right for a single
Thompson takes his turn and holds at first

He rips a grounder to short
Nights comes up with it
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 6-3
No runs for Old Timers in
the top of the 6th
We're all tied up at 1
We'll be right back

Fly ball to right
Thompson is under it
He makes the grab
So one up and one gone

Shallow fly ball
Thompson charging
HE DIVES...
HE CAN'T GET IT!
Pflaggstettler stops at first
That's a single

It bounces in front of the
plate and gets by Ewing
Pflaggstettler moves up 90
feet on the wild pitch

Curveball, in and low
Fouts hits it to Anson at first
Takes it cleanly...
Races to the bag...
It's going to be close...
And...
Out is the call
That could have gone either way
Pflaggstettler is now perched
over at third
We're all tied up at 1 with two away
Let's check some other scores as well

AL Pre WWII is edging Japanese
League 3 to 2
Grove and Inao currently dueling
Negro League I clipping Left Outs 4 to 0
Negro League II is pounding
Turn of Century 9 to 2
Late 20th is in front of
AL Post WWII 6 to 3
Dead Ball Era leads Caribbean 4 to 3
McGinnity and Valenzuela currently dueling

Gonzalez gets a good cut at it...
He lifts it high and deep toward right
Thompson is heading back...
At the fence
And he makes the catch for the out!
Radbourn breathes a sigh of relief
That'll do it for FOFC
So we're still tied
After 6 innings
FOFC has one run, 4 hits and one error
While Old Timers has one run,
3 hits and no errors

Kelly pounds a grounder toward
Nights at short
Jeff moves in front of it...
Whoops... a bad bounce
But Nights stayed with it
Over to first and Kelly is retired
Nice play by the FOFC short stop
One away in the top of the
7th for Old Timers

He rips a grounder to the mound
Nielsen comes up with it
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 1-3
That's two away

Swung on and hit sharply to short
Nights plays it on one bounce
Over to Gonzalez...
Out of there!
And that will do it for Old Timers

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!

Smashed to short
Davis grabs it
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 6-3
One away
While we wait for the next batter
Let's take a ten second station break
This is your Strat-O-Matic
Broadcast System
Your four sports network!

Stan Gunner offers at the curveball,
but checks his swing
Oh, Gunner couldn't get the
bat out of the way
It's a soft line drive to George
Kelly for the out
Gunner never even left the batter's box
Two away

Nielsen hits a three hopper
towards George Kelly
Kelly scoops it and fires
it to first for the out
That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 47454

Grounded towards third
Fouts scoops it
LONG THROW...
HE'S OUT!
With one down, up next is Billy Hamilton
To be followed by King Kelly

It's bunted down the third base line
Fouts streaks in
Scoops it over to first
in one swift motion
OUT!
Great play!

Kelly takes the pitch
STRIKE THREE, is the call
Kelly can't believe it and says
something to the ump
Chalk up a whiff for Nielsen
Nielsen sets the Ancients down in order

Sinker, down at the knees...
Swung on...
Blade hits a Baltimore chop...
Past the infield into center for a single!
That was a difficult ball to handle

Tucker squares to bunt
It's dribbled down the third base line
Kelly bare hands it...
Sidearm toss to first
Just in time!
Nice play
Credit A. J. Tucker with a sacrifice
Radbourn has the first out
in the bottom of the 8th
Ewing trots out to the mound
Says a few words to Old Hoss...
With the runner on second...
Probably making sure of the signs

Routine fly to center
Hamilton starts in
Now he starts backpedaling...
Faster...
Just does catch up to it!
Blade scampers back to second
That's two away for the All Stars
We have a real "nail-biter" here today

Base hit to center for Pflaggstettler
Dick Howser will send the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Aggressive baserunning by FOFC...
Not cut-off...
Billy Hamilton throws the
ball away for an error!

Fouts swings and lifts one toward right

He is under it now...
And makes the easy catch...
That retires the side
The All Stars score 1 run in the inning
After 8 innings, FOFC leads 2 to 1

Off speed pitch on the way...
And Delahanty watches it go
by for the third strike
FOFC gets the first out of the inning

Over the outside corner
Thompson hits the curve right to second...
Blade takes it on the second hop
Fires to 1st...
Thompson is out by a couple of steps
Two gone for Old Timers
Time is running out for them

Knowles misses low on that one
Anson draws the walk
Number 1 today by Knowles

Anson takes a walking lead
Knowles looks the runner back

Frank Selee will send in a pinch
runner for Cap Anson
John Ward is trotting out to first base

Ward yells something to Knowles
It sounded like a challenge from here
I wouldn't be surprised...
Ward is great on the bases
He wants to unnerve Sammy
No doubt he does!
The runner unable to take a big lead
Knowles keeps looking him back

Kelly gets good wood on it!
Right at Jeff Nights...
He leaps up high...
It's past him!
Ward had to wait on that
to see if it would be caught
He'll have to stop at second
on that wicked line single by Kelly

Davis hits a sharp grounder
to Jeeberoni Potpie
It rolls up his arm
Potpie can't find the handle
Davis is safe on the error by Potpie

Grounded towards the hole
Fielded nicely by Fouts
THE LONG THROW . . .
HE GOT HIM!!!
Score It: 5-3
And that will do it for Old Timers
FOFC wins 2 to 1
Nielsen gets credit for the win
Knowles notches the save
Radbourn takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Persimmon Pflaggstettler
He was 4 for 4
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.
