Thanks! The more I thought about a country choice, the less I liked it, so I went big to shore it up early. Because of that, I may have put Elvis in Country rather than the very wide open and powerful 60s and below. Lots of greats fit into that, so a guy in the Country Music Hall of Fame (Elvis) would be a good way to knock that out.

I think Lenin went late, and he, for Songwriter too, was the other one I was looking at and is a good pickup

Chief, producers often work with MANY MANY groups and artists, not just one. Can we assume that they are not held to the restriction?

If you are taking a 1st round label, there is no other choice, you have to get this, and a nice selection

This is kind of what I was thinking. I could be wrong, but in my mind there are only two labels that you can say and everyone immediately knows and appreciates. I'm sure there are others but I'd bet you'd have to do some explaining first. |

I like picking on the swing. Too bad none of the obvious choices fell this far, though.

Okay. Wrestled for a long time with my draft philosophy. I think I'm going to try to jump the field in the areas where my personal background is weak, and hopefully have enough savvy to make up for it later as I fill in the roster with the second-tier types of the golden age of rock.

Very happy to knock out the 90s (was very concerned about the timing of Blood Sugar Sex Magik) and hip-hop (plus other instrument) with what I think are solid picks.

Bambaataa is a very innovative pick, I like it.

Rush's two biggest albums were 1980 and 1981. I wanted to use Peart as my 80s drummer.

80s is interesting, and after taking another look, I think I'm okay with it. Permanent Waves ('80) was their first time in the US Top 30. 2112, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres were all late '70s, and were Top 5 in Canada, but were only in the 30s-60s in the US.

I was going to use Peeart as 80s drummer until Chief posted this rule. Rush's breakthru album was 2112 in 1976. First to go platiunum and all that. Then they had a number of big songs from Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres after that in 77 and 78. (Closer to the Heart, The Trees...) Even Working Man from 74 got radio play and led to their record deal. Correct Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were the monster albums but its not when they broke through. It's Chief's wording of "FIRST BIG BREAK" that seemed like Chief was saying "the thing that made them a known band that didn't die", not necessarily their biggest hit.

I think it is up to the voters to decide if his time period was correct.

Not if it's a rule he specified. Otherwise you could basically use anyone who has ever made music in any decade they did. That was his whole point. I know previous drafts were more versatile yes, but he made a point of making a rule. Just trying to follow the spirit of his rules as there is no real grey area in them. And the voters take those rules into account when they vote. There is a pretty strong case to be made that Rush didn't hit it big until the 80s, even though they did have some success in the 70s.

Then Jerry Garcia could be said to be an 80s singer for that matter. That's when he had his only hit.

Not a strong case at all really. They started in the 70s, got their break in the 70s, had their first success in the 70s. had their most famous album in the 80s. Not the same thing. But Chief is here so he can say if he wants to change the rule or not. |

We had to have one guy who is the expert on all things Rush in this draft, didn't we.

This. My conceptualizing was just to explain my thinking. It's really just a suggestion. In the end, it will be the voters that decide if your categories are appropriate.

And it's not that I don't understand what you're saying. I obviously do. And that is how a lot of the other drafts I've seen did things sure (the whole 'put things where you want and suffer the consequences'), but not this one because the rule is there.

Hmm... I don't like having one part of the category covered undetermined a rule and anothet not. But you're right, producers do a lot of different acts. So I'll have to make managers open as well. So from here on, managers and producers are not subject to the act elimination rule, like Labels. Please let me know if this change affected picks earlier, and I'll see if we can make any amends.
