My guesses for sure things would be:
Stayin Alive, More Than a Woman, and um...some other disco song

Ah How Deep Is Your Love...

All three were #1 though.

Hrm. Actually reminds me of something I read about Led Zeppelin; Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single because it was too long, and the band opted not to edit it down to a time that would qualify for the charts. Same would go for a number of their songs. Maybe this was even mentioned in the two-hit wonder thread. I don't think they fit here though, because they really didn't release many singles at all.

Man, I counted wrong. I thought they had 7.

The ones that come to mind are: Jive Talkin, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Tragedy and How Deep is Your Love.

My beach bosy knowledge is limited so being a reasonable person I would say: Good Vibrations, Funfunfun, California Girls, and Surfin USA are the 4 rushmore songs I'd use.

And At first I had Surfer GIrl so that would be the bicker song...

oh yeah I Get Around is another...

Well I Get Around and Good Vibrations are both #1. NOne of the others. It COULD be the Beach Boys. Problem is I don't think there would be any question that GOod Vibrations would be the first one to think of.

I know they started out as a kid group (kind of like a white Australian version of the Jackson 5) and were popular even way back then.

Here's one completely out of left field and I guarantee it is not it.

The Jam / Paul Weller/Style Council

Non-#1s
That's Entertainment - The Jam
My Ever Changing Moods - Style Council
The Changingman - Paul Weller

#1
A Town Called Malice

The hint being "3 sure fires" in that he was instrumental to three separate bands over the course of 3 different decades. 70s (The Jam), 80s (Style Council), 90s (Solo).

Of course, that is all UK success.

again, depending on what US chart we're looking at....aerosmith works

none of their biggest hits were #1:

Dream On
Sweet Emotions
Walk This Way

only 1 hit #1 overall (which is shocking), but if you count US Rock charts, they had 10 #1's.

Replace one of the final three with God Only Knows and you're doing ok in my book. A Beach Boys Mount Rushmore must include Good Virbrations and God Only Knows IMO, there's a lot that could be argued after that.

I thought Cartman's original guess of the Beach Boys was great but Good Vibrations hit #1 (and of course QS already nixed this one but they're one of my favorite bands so meh).

Overall US charts

It's an accomplishment to have more than 3-4 songs reach that point.

Elton John seems like a great guess, I have two knocks against it... one is that it seems like its very easy to argue the merits of 6 or 7 of his songs for mount rushmore status, so immediately landing on three in complete agreement seems a little unlikely... the other is the catch that Candle in the Wind and Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me hit #1 later on (diana / george michael duet), but I may be overthinking things with my second thought.

Nonetheless, I'd guess Elton John as well at this point, and make the three songs Rocket Man, Your Song, and Candle in the Wind.

went back to say "think it was the 4th of july" was the Chicago lyric hinted at by Quik (couple days ago we had occasion to bring the act up again)

but seeing as how he just posted, i guess i was wrong.

I might guess U2, but that's after looking at their discography and is nothing more than a stab in the dark. "Where the Streets Have No Name" could align with "road trip", but other than that, nothing to go on.

I thought of U2 as well - they fit very well except they don't have enough #1's to qualify as "sizable #1's hits list".

I thought of him, but that last one WAS a #1. I think some might put I Just Called To Say I Love You, I Wish, or Sir Duke on the list.

(I might personally put We Can Work It Out on there - not a #1, but better than the Beatles' version afaic)

Sizable is in the eye of the beholder, but I wouldn't be using that term if it were only two or three.

Artist: Justin Timberlake (has had 4 US #1 Hits)

Right, Q alluded to one of the four songs being a #1, the three others not being #1s

The first two are solid, not sure about WBSS. I'd think Beat It, Billie Jean, Bad, Black of White would all come to mind first.

The 3 non #1s are the ones that there is consensus on, and then the 4th song was disagreed on was the #1, right?

George Michael
I Want Your Sex
Faith
Freedom '90
Careless Whisper/ Wake Me Up before You Go-Go
