Must be a new thing. I also see they're trying to bribe with a dollar of MP3 credit for you to skip the 2day now.

Even Prime shipping cost more than normal slower shipping. It might not be as regular two day shipping, but you definitely aren't getting free two day shipping either.

In many states, Amazon did not charge sales tax and it was up to the individual residents to report their non-taxed, internet purchased products on their state income tax forms (which, as you can imagine, was difficult to get folks to accurately report and pay). They started doing it in WV just a few years ago. Last edited by Swaggs : 09-04-2012 at 06:47 AM. |

I'm a PA resident as well, and noticed that I was charged sales tax on my order yesterday.
I always thought the internet rules around sales tax (granted, this does not address the use tax concern), was if the business had presence (this was generally defined if they had a shipping location in the state I believe) in the state, they would charge sales tax. If they didn't - they wouldn't. I'm wondering if they opened up a shipping location in PA? |

I'm dealing with a couple of tax issues for our business, one of which is a letter we received from Washington state detailing their legislative change to tax nexus rules for paying business and occupation tax in the state. One of the standards is sales exceeding $250K (no physical presence necessary). It wouldn't surprise me to see them extend these kinds of laws to collection of sales tax.

They may have, as they're expanding heavily in the hopes of soon being able to offer same day shipping. NY was one of, if not the, first states to charge tax to its residents on Amazon purchases and at the time there was no shipping center in state. Comes from pressure from the B&Ms who were already getting killed by Amazon on price. Having to deal with charging sales tax was too much. Been maybe 3 years now? It sucks, but it is what it is. |

The sales tax on internet vendors has gotten increasingly complicated - starting with companies like Amazon engaging in a variety of "affiliate' relationships with retailers and other businesses in multiple states, but not directly maintaining a physical presence there. Recently, it appears that Amazon has decided to play ball and become a collector of taxes in places where they have been getting pushback. (Great oversimplification of a complicated issue there)
And by and large, states with a sales tax generally have an accompanying "use tax" that works the same way but on purchases made elsewhere and brought into the state. So, whether it's railroad ties, furniture, or your copy of 50 Shades, technically you owe the "sales tax" on it, regardless of whether the seller collected it on the state's behalf. Obviously this is a system that has massive leakage for individual consumers, thus the widespread (but technically mistaken) perception that there is no tax on internet and some catalog orders. A weird coalition, mostly led by "local business" interests, are pushing for Congress to change tax laws to apply sales taxes, in some fashion, to all remote purchases. Even a fair number of anti-tax types see this as a fair step, to avoid the unlevel playing field (a reliably potent anecdote in political storytelling) where the faceless, distant company has an advantage over the local folks right here in my district. |
