I think there's a place for spanking. My 18 month old understands the word, and will refrain from doing something if I tell him he's going to get spanked for it.

The timeouts work pretty well, too. Of course, the only way to keep the kid in his time-out chair is to threaten to spank him if he leaves...

We all have our own styles. I spanked our oldest for a while until I realized that a) I was doing it in frustration and anger and b) I saw my kid start using violence to resolve conflict.

I think it is cool that you came to that conclusion yourself and can admit that to that.

My kids still get spankings if they put themselves in immediate danger (reaching for a hot stove, running out in the middle of the street, etc..) and I occasionally lose my temper and smack them on the butt in anger.

In all honesty, however, my kids respond much better to time outs. Spankings kind of hurt, but they are over in a millisecond and forgotten 2 minutes later. Timeouts affect their "flow". There is a designated place where they have to sit and they are ignored for the time they sit there. Then when their time is up, I look them straight in the eye and tell them in no uncertain terms what they did was wrong. No sugar coating. No "I love you, but...". Just stern instruction.

The worst brats I ever seen are the ones whose parents are too lazy to do anything other than lash out at them violently.

i agree with this. when we have children i'll become a "time-out parent", rather than a spank-the-butt parent. that's not to say i won't ever raise a hand to my child, but it would come probably after they were 5. they'd have to understand *why* they're being spanked for it to be effective, imo. a lot of times young kids do things that could be remedied by a time-out. you should only breakout the spanking for something horribly bad so that they understand the severity of their wrongdoing. i think you give the wrong impression when you resort to spanking for any ole bad thing. i don't want them thinking that as long as you're bigger and stronger than someone else you have the right to use violence.

First of all, it's really hard to enforce time-out if you don't have the spanking card to play as a last resort.

Second, you gotta be careful... if they don't know that it's ok to use violence when they're bigger and stronger than someone else, they'll end up picking on someone bigger than them, and then they're screwed. I say, train the kids to pick their battles wisely...
