ahh, never thought somebody would say it the way I'd say it! Thanks Cringer! I hate them diet drinks for that same reason, the crap taste and that darn aftertaste... And no, I've not tried that new, 177th flavor of Coke, as it'll probably get to us in, oh, about 2 and a half years... FM

You can't drink diet thinking it's going to be an acceptable replacement for the real thing. That's not the point. For a soft drink with no sugar, carbs or calories, it's good - better than the regular Diet Coke. But there can be no comparison to the real thing because it's not a fair fight. Try staying away from the real stuff for about a month, then trying some of the diet drinks. You'll probably like them. If you don't care about cutting those empty calories, then stick with the real thing - it's 1,000,000 times better.

Nope, not happening. I don't drink many soft drinks, maybe one per week or so and there's been some times where I had not drank one in maybe two weeks then went to my parents who only drink diet stuff and I still had the aftertaste... I know you can't have both taste *and* lack of calories and that wasn't my point. As I said, I don't drink a lot of soft drink, and I'll stick with the regular stuff for the times when I do... I still think they taste like crap though FM

What I think you have to do is pound your taste buds into submission by drinking nothing but diet soda for a couple of weeks. Eventually, the aftertaste will fade away, or at least that's what I'm told. I'm about half-way there, I think. I don't notice it nearly as much as I used to before I started this crazy experiment. I haven't had a full sugar Coke in over a week. I almost drank one last night, but I get the feeling that actually drinking something that tastes good will restart the clock.
It's like when I started drinking coffee, really. The first few cups of your life get choked down because it's really a shitty drink with a foul taste. After a while, though, you get used to it...and now, I love it. The stronger the better.

Agreed. I gave up regular pop/soda/Coke/whatever you call it about a year and a half ago, and have had it maybe a half-dozen times since then. I now think its much too sweet and syrupy, and have grown quite used to the taste of diet drinks. So much so in fact, that it took a bit to get used to Coke Zero as it tastes more like regular Coke. |

The aftertaste is what kills all diet beverages for me. I can't stand it. I will give Coke Zero a chance. Although they need Cherry Coke Zero, as I am addicted to Cherry Coke and regular Coke isn't quite up to snuff anymore because of it. Cherry Coke is like having an amplifier that goes to 11...

It's just like switching from whole milk to skim. After a few months, skim tastes fine and if you drink whole, it tastes like cream.

except there's no aftertaste with skim milk. Yeah, it's a bit less tasty, but that's it... At least that's how I see it...

The splenda version tastes better, but does go flat quick.
As someone who is type II diabetic, Coke Zero is a godsend. It almost tastes like Coke. Is it me or does diet Coke taste like the "New" Coke they tried on us in the 80's. |

I don't really understand the whole aftertaste thing people are talking about here. I've never really had a problem with diet drinks and can switch between diet and regular pretty easily. I know they taste different, but have never really noticed this "aftertaste" people are freaking out about.

This oddly is about the only one that I *don't* like that much. Seems to have an aftertaste or something. Diet Dr. Pepper is almost the same way, but I like Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper (that's a mouthful, btw) a lot. I'd rank Diet Vanilla Coke high, as well as Diet Pepsi Vanilla (probably more than the Coke version, I tend to like Pepsi better). The lemon/lime varieties of both are good too. I'll also go for an occasional Fresca, diet Barq's, diet Dew/Code Red.

Dola - I also can't really drink regular sodas these days (or for the last decade), they are just way to sweet for me. Can't stand them. Except for maybe ginger ale.

Isn't it pantywaste?
Anyway, with how much soda I drink, if it wasn't diet my panties would be about 8 sizes larger than they are now.

Not so. Originally Pepsi One was apartame. They just recently came out with the Splenda flavor. I think it tastes better with Splenda. Here you go: http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/26/splenda_cola.htm Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda is scheduled to debut this spring, and will be branded with the name of the sweetener as well as a distinct yellow streak. Despite its new addition, however, Coca-Cola will continue selling its traditional Diet Coke, flavored with aspartame. Other changes/additions Coca-Cola has made to Diet Coke--in order to boost sales in North America--include the introduction of new flavors, such as:
http://www.azcentral.com/health/men/...soda17-ON.html Pepsi introduced Pepsi One in 1998, targeting men in their 20s. Sales peaked at 83.7 million cases in 1999 before falling steeply. "It was launched a little bit before its time," Pepsi's Hobart said. Now Pepsi One is being reformulated with the sweetener Splenda and will be marketed to men as tasting more like regular Pepsi. (this was in Feb 17, 2005)

Actually, from what I have read, you are correct. Diet coke is actually a diet version of new coke. So Coke Zero is really the first diet version of classic coke. I really like Coke Zero and Pepsi One with Splenda. Can't stand regular diet coke or even diet coke with splenda (and I am a splenda fan in general). The new diet 7-up with splenda isnt too bad. Tastes a little like plain soda water (which i hate), but once i finished the bottle is seemed better. Still waiting for the Surge replacement by Coke, called Vault, to hit the market around here.

Man, Surge was the shiz.....I hate the fact that Coke killed it. Mellow Yellow, for that matter, appears to be rare around here, as well. Also there was that other citris soda that coke made, Citra, and i think it got killed too. |

I'm a Diet Coke / Diet Pepsi drinker, who switched to diet from regular about 2.5 years ago. We've actually used Splenda for some baking and used other products sweetened with Splenda and been generally happy with it, but I thought the Diet Coke with Splenda wasn't very good. I'll have to give the Coke Zero a try.

You kids make too many variations of sodas nowadays. When we were little, we had just two flavors: dinosaur piss, and diet dinosaur piss. And we never complained.

Ok, been a long time since posting here (and even then didn't post much), but this thread I just had to reply.
I used to love Coke, and wanted to cut back on the calories so I started doing a Coke/C2 split, get a 12 of each and switch off which one I had next. Then I went out on a limb and chose to go all the way down to a C2/Diet Coke split. The diet taste was rough to take at first and I will agree with the above comments, it did take probably 3 weeks to fully adjust to it. Now, I drink Diet Coke fully (mainly because stupid C2 doesn't even come in cases and 12's never seem to be on sale). Diet Pepsi tastes flat to me (just like regular Pepsi does vs Coke to me). I did try the Splenda version of Diet Coke and guess I wasn't that crazy about it, but then a couple weeks ago saw a bottle of Coke Zero...OMG I love that stuff. Again...COKE, GET THAT STUFF IN CASES!!!! Now I can't remember, but I thought Coke Zero reminded me of C2 (has anybody else tried them together?). I also thought Coke was disappointed with C2, and would not be suprised to see it go away either. I hope not, since it is a nice mix if you don't want the full original. Ok, on the Coke deal...I can't remember what the "new" Coke (or I think it was even bottled as Coke II for a while wasn't it?) tasted like. It was when Pepsi was rising and beating them in the 80's and Coke made their drink more in the lines of Pepsi? Also, is the Coke Classic we have now identical to the original? Or is there still a slight difference (for some reason I thought when it came back it tasted different, but may have been just the change). I just can't remember all of the details. |

You can also add Vanilla Coke and Coke with Lemon to the list. Well Lemon I am not totally sure on, but I know Vanilla was Coke's before Pepsi. Pepsi was too busy with Pepsi Blue at that time, nice flavor they came up with there....LOL, the only good Pepsi product/variation IMO is what they did with the Mountain Dew series (Code Red, and LiveWire, although not crazy about the Pitch Black or Baja Blast). |

I also finally tried this and think it's great. Not exactly like real coke mind you, but for giving up the calories I will take it easily over other diet drinks.

I just had the Cherry Coke Zero version. I approve. I basically only drink Coke Zero nowadays anyway, so a Cherry version is nice as a diversion once in a while .

Funny to see this thread and what I posted (which FrogMan quotes at the top of this page).
That was right after I started running and working out more. So two years later and several dropped pounds later all I drink is Coke Zero, or sometimes Diet Coke if Zero is not available. Coke Zero Cherry is great. Now I hope they make Cherry Vanilla.
