It does appear that ALOT of people are playing this game online, successfully. So what's our problem?

I'm not sure. We connected the one game just fine, but now we can't all seem to get in the same game.. very odd.

I have Norton on, but told it to allow Civ IV access. It didn't stop me from connecting to that first game.

Ok, I turned it off. However, that wouldn't explain how I connected the first time ok. By the way, in the readme, it mentions the sync-error we were getting in the first game and it says that the host has to save the game and restart it from the lobby to fix it.

Sure. FWIW, I just joined 5 different games successfully before quickly apologizing and leaving. To clarify, I didn't join them in game, but as it was preparing to start. Connected to every one of them with no problems.

Yeah, I messed up. Apparently, I shouldn't have set the other civs to open with no one controlling them...

Good news:
We finally figured it out.

Bad news:
Forgot to allow more then two civs in, and allow people to join.

I'm a little embarassed that it took me over an hour to realize Galaxy and I were the only 2 civs in the game

In my defense, with AI takes over checked, I assumed the AI would take over in the beginning of the game..

My roomie and I just played over LAN as alliances...Made a huge human error. The Incas/Mongolian alliance declare war on us, and our military was aimed at the Cyrus/Arab border. We were ahead in research and unit types, but we just had no one over to his border.
