Frank Robinson flirted with getting the MVP on the losing team, but when a #30 beats the #3, I decided that:

Derek Jeter of the Yankees is the MVP.

Let the Booing commence!

#5 1984 Detroit Tigers vs. #28 1985 Kansas City Royals

Game 1: Royals (Charlie Leibrandt) at Tigers (Dan Petry)

The Tigers bust out with 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lance Parrish hit’s a sacrifice fly to get the first run home, and then Darrell Evans hit’s a 3 run homerun, and the Tigers already lead, 4-0.

The Royals get 1 run back in the 2nd inning when Darryl Motley singles to left and Hal McRae crosses home plate.

The Tigers get that run back in the bottom of the third inning when Alan Trammell hit’s a lead off homerun.

The Royals get 1 back to make it 5-2 in the 4th inning when Hal McRae hit’s a solo shot of his own.

The pitchers settle down and no runs are scored until the 8th inning.

In the top half, Steve Balboni hit’s a solo homer, but the Tigers still lead, 5-3.

In the top of the 9th, Detroit brings in their closer, Willie Hernandez. He proceeds to give up a leadoff homerun to Hal McRae, and the Royals only trail by 1.

Hernandez settles down and get the next three Royals out and the Tigers take game 1, 5-4. They lead the Series 1-0.

Game 2: Royals (Bret Saberhagen) at Tigers (Juan Berenguer)

The Royals get going early today. Berenguer walks the first three batter of the game to load the bases. Steve Balboni hits into the double play, but a run scores. Frank White drives in another run and the Royals go up 2-0 early on.

Darryl Motley adds another run in the 2nd with a solo homer, and the Royals go up 3-0.

The Tigers are finally able to tie the game up in the bottom of the 6th inning. Tom Brookens leads off with a triple and Larry Herndon sacrifices him home. Lou Whitaker hit’s a 2 run homerun later in the inning to tie the game up at 3 runs each.

The game remains tied after 9 innings, so we go to extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, the Royals manufacture a run when Balboni single to right and Lonnie Smith trots home to give the Royals a 4-3 lead.

Dan Quisenberry comes in to close it out in the bottom of the 11th. With 2 outs and a runner on second, Alan Trammell hit’s a single and the game is tied again.

The Royals salvage the series in the top of the 14th inning by scoring 4 runs. With 2 out, Concepcion drives in the first run, then Jim Sundberg drives in two more, and Darryl Motley drives in the final run. Quisenberry stays in and earns the win, 8-4.

The Royals have tied the series up at 1 game each.

Game 3: Tigers (Jack Morris) at Royals (Danny Jackson)

Game 3 was over before it even got started. The Royals starting pitcher, Danny Jackson left the game before he even registered a single out. The Tigers scored 8 runs in the first inning. Five runs in between, and just to add insult to injury, they tacked on 7 more runs in the final inning.

The final score was a joke, Tigers 20, Royals 2. Tom Brookens had 5 RBI for the Tigers, while Kirk Gibson and Chet Lemon each had 4 RBI.

Game 4: Tigers (Milt Wilcox) at Royals (Mark Gubicza)

In game 4, the Royals return the ass-kicking they received in game 3.

They score 3 runs in each of the first 2 innings to take a 6-0 lead early on. They add another 7 runs in the game to blow out the Tigers, 13-3 and force a decisive game 5 back in Detroit.

George Brett and Hal McRae each drove in 4 runs for the Royals, and Gubicza went the full 9 innings for the win.

Game 5: Royals (Charlie Leibrandt) at Tigers (Dan Petry)

Kirk Gibson gets things started for the Tigers with a 2 run homerun in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Hal McRae hits an RBI single to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1.

George Brett hit’s a solo shot in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game up!

The Tigers take over after that though, and clinch the series for all practical purposes in the bottom of the inning. They put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th, and go on to the Series victory by a final score of 7-3. They win the series 3 games to 2 and move on.

While Pat Borders or John Olerud might have easily won this award, even in the losing effort, the bottom of the 9th inning heroics to save the series for the Yankees means that:

Thurmon Munson of the Yankees is the Series MVP!

The Yankees tack on a few more to finish the game off with a final score of 9-5. They take a 1-0 Series lead.

Game 2: A’s (Blue Moon Odom) at Yankees (Orlando Hernandez)

Paul O’Neill doubles in the bottom of the first, Derek Jeter scores and the Yankees start off with a 1-0 lead.

A Sal Bondo RBI single ties the game in the top of the 2nd, but in the bottom of the 2nd, the Yankees regain the lead on a bases loaded walk and another Paul O’Neill RBI hit. Yankees lead 3-1.

Bernie Williams doubles in the bottom of the 5th to plate Jeter, and the Yanks lead 4-1.

Tino Martinez hit’s a 2 run shot in the 7th to put the Yankees up 6-1.

In the top of the 8th, the A’s try to rally. Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson get an RBI each and the lead is down to 6-3.

Mariano Rivera comes in for the ninth inning, and he strikes out the side for the save. Yankees win 6-3 and go up 2 games to 0.

Game 3: Yankees (Roger Clemens) at A’s (Ken Holtzman)

Once again, the Yankees take the lead early on. In the top of the first inning, Bernie Williams hit’s a 3 run homer to give them a 3-0 lead.

Dave Duncan hit’s a solo shot in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1.

The bottom of the third is a huge one for the A’s. They put 6 runs across the plate, chase Clemens from the game and take a 7-3 lead.

The A’s add 1 more run later in the game, but Holtzman goes all 9 innings for the 8-3 victory. The A’s avoid the sweep and the series is now 2-1, Yankees.

Game 4: Yankees (Andy Pettitte) at A’s (Vida Blue)

Bernie Williams hit a sac fly to score the first run of the game, in the top of the 1st inning. Yanks lead 1-0.

Paul O’Neill and Bernie Williams knock a few more runs home for the Yankees in the top of the 5th inning, and the Yankees regain the lead at 4-2.

The A’s come right back in the bottom of the 5th and tie the game up at 4.

After 9 innings, the game remains tied, but in the bottom of the 10th, Reggie Jackson hit’s a double that scores the winning run. A’s win 5-4 and this Series goes to a 5th game!

Game 5: A’s (Catfish Hunter) at Yankees (David Cone)

Reggie Jackson puts the final nail in the Yankee coffin with a 3 run homerun in the top of the 9th to give the A’s a 6-1 victory and a 3-2 Series victory. The A’s trailed 2 games to none, and stormed back to win it!

Your MVP:

Catfish Hunter of the Oakland A's.

He ran into some bad luck in game 1....some runs scored due to an error and he got the early hook, but in game 5 he went the distance against Cone and the Yankees for the Series clinching win.

His line for the series:

10.67 IP, 4ER, 14K, 3.374 ERA, 1-1

#14 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates vs. #19 1988 LA Dodgers

Game 1: Dodgers (Orel Hershiser) at Pirates (Jim Bibby)

The Dodgers strike first in the top of the 3rd inning when John Shelby triples to drive in 2 runs. The Dodgers take a 2-0 lead.

As it turns out, that is all they needed thanks to a brilliant performance by Hershiser. He allowed only 2 hits in the entire game. One of them was a solo shot by Bill Madlock, but the Dodgers take the 2-1 win, and the 1-0 series lead.

Game 2: Dodgers (Tim Leary) at Pirates (Bruce Kison)

Again, the Dodgers score first. In the top of the 4th inning, Shelby double to drive in 1 run, and then Franklin Stubbs hit’s a 2 run homer and the Dodgers lead 3-0.

That score holds all the way up to the ninth inning. Tim Leary lets in 1 run, and closer Jay Howell is brought in to close the door, but the Pirates rally and get 2 runs off of Howell to tie the game up at 3.

We head to extra innings, and in the top of the 11th inning, Pedro Guerrero drives in what turns out to be the game winning RBI. Dodgers win 4-3 and take a 2-0 series lead heading to LA.

Game 3: Pirates (John Candelaria) at Dodgers (Tim Belcher)

Both pitchers are just lights out until the top of the 8th inning when the Pirates break through with 4 runs.

The 4-0 lead is plenty for John Candeleria who ends up throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 8. The Pirates win 4-0 and the Series is led by the Dodgers, 2-1.

Game 4: Pirates (Bert Blyleven) at Dodgers (John Tudor)

The Dodgers have a big bottom of the 4th inning and take a 4-0 lead.

They add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-0 and that is all she wrote. John Tudor allowed just one run late in the game and he went on to pitch a complete game victory, 6-1. The Dodgers upset the Pirates and move on to round 2.

Note: The seedings are for reference. The team listed first gets the Home field advantage in each case. The lower seed will not always have homefield.
