I have put Biggs back in the lineup now that he is healthy. He probably should have started last game, but I didn;t notice he was not in until afterwards and we won so I guess it doesn't matter.

Despite the loss we have clinched a first round bye in the playoffs. We are tied with Wheeling at 12-2 (we hate Wheeling ) so we are still fighting for home field advantage, but at least we are garaunteed to get an extra week of rest for Coghill.

We now have a one game edge on Wheeling for home field advantage. I think Wheeling currently holds the tie breaker if we lose and they win.
We are playing (8-7) Fort Knox at home and Wheeling is playing (7-8) Lake Erie at home. My question is do we start Coghill now that he is probable? My first thought was to just save him for the playoffs, but if we have to go into Wheeling, who has the best defense in the league this year, for the division championship game we might be in trouble. So should we start Coghill to try and ensure the win?

well, we could pretend that since we're such a marquee team our season-ending game would have been a sunday or monday-nighter... this would allow us to sim the other games first and see whether or not we even need the game.
assuming we don't want to bend the rules though, can you take a close look at the tiebreakers? Maybe we don't need the game either way. We haven't played them, so it would come down to what, common games? |

The problem is I am not certain what the tie breakers are. If they are like the NFL which I believe they are then it goes Conference Record and then Division Record. Here is how it stands now.
Little Rock Conf: 9-2 Div: 3-2 Wheeling Conf: 9-2 Div: 4-1 So it seems that Wheeling does have the tie breaker at the moment.

I am heading home so I am going to post the files to where we are right now and I can finish the sims tonight. I would like to have somewhat of a consensus on what to do here. I would hate to start Coghill and lose him for the playoffs, but if we lose this game we may not make it out of Wheeling anyway. Food for thought.

1. We didn't play head-to-head, so that doesn't matter.
2. Conference record comes next. This does in fact mean that we either need to win, or they need to lose. I suggest we keep Coghill on the bench and hope for the best. Even if we win, the chance of him getting re-injured just seems too great.

dola: our opponent was 3-13 last year, so i think that effectively rules out my "monday night football" angle. There is no way in the real world a matchup between a powerhouse and a doormat would be on prime time.

I agree - keep Coghill rested, let's go with Newton and take our chances. I've had a ton of minor injuries get worse that way.

Fort Knox (8-7) at Little Rock (13-2)(-13)
Code:
Injuries Ethan Brock, FB - Knee Tendinitis, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Lamont Dresow, TE - Concussion, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Otis Coghill, QB - Separated Shoulder, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Bo Biggs, RB - Strained Elbow Tendon, Out, full strength in 1996. Matthew Morrell, FL - Sprained Knee, Questionable, full strength in about 3 weeks. Ouch tough way to lose that one. Getting beat on a last second hail mary is a tough one to swallow. Still we catch a break as Wheeling loses their game too and we back into home field advantage. Better to be lucky than good I guess. Although losing Biggs for the playoffs may be tough. Injuries

An intriguing matchup. We face our old friend Kent Wolfe in this matchup. Code:
Injuries Riddick Finley, RDE - Sprained Knee, Questionable, full strength in 1996. Ethan Brock, FB - Broken Foot, Out, full strength in 1996. Otis Coghill, QB - Bruised Ribcage, Probable, full strength in 1996. Bo Biggs, RB - Strained Elbow Tendon, Out, full strength in 1996. Matthew Morrell, FL - Sprained Knee, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. And Coghill shall lead them.

Wheeling (13-4) at Little Rock (14-3)(-4)
Like I said before this will be a tough matchup for us. Wheeling has the best defense in the league and we are short our starting backfield. I am really glad it's at home. Code:
Another very solid season, but not quite what we were looking for.

bummer. looks like wheeling was simply the better team. I think having no running game put too much pressure on the banged-up Coghill. maybe next year....

The defense just flat out needs to be better next season. We were terrible this year although the offense bailed us out in a lot of games. I am hoping the further development of our young CB's and LB's will make a significant difference next season.
On a side note Coghill broke his own record for single season QB rating. That guy is the real deal.

While dissapointing, it is nice to know that we are not a gimme for the championship game every year.. we were flat out beaten by Wheeling. I don't know that even with Biggs we would have won. My only concern here is that we've got two young stars on our team, and both of them are injury prone it would seem.. Coghill really is a super stud, however he has not completed a season for us yet..
While Cog did not have as many TDs as last year, he increased his TD:INT ratio and was at almost 5:1 this year, that is just remarkable. He also increased his average by about .75 yards. We have him wrapped up for one more season, and then he gets the huge money he deserves. And he does deserve it. In two years starting for us and some sub duty for two more years he is 29-7, has 13 4Q Heroics, has thrown for 8,148 yards, a 66% completion rate, 69 TDs: 31 INTs, and a 98.5 QB Rating. If he stays healthy, he looks to break most of our team records in the passing categories including yards and TDs. Doug, celebrate! We had two 1,000 yard receivers this year! Both Morrell and McAlister hit the mark as McAlister continued to steamroll through the Little Rock record books. A look ahead at the offense: Here are the significant guys that have contracts running out: FL Matthew Morrell - Morrell had a breakout year and did far more with his opportunities than Perea did. Perea had two years of 8 games starting (one of those years under Coghill) and only managed 525 yards. In one season starting under Cog, with injuries, Morrell amassed 1160 yards and 9 TDs. It would hurt a lot to lose him, but he will probably be asking for big money. If there is a way to keep him AND McAlister, I would LOVE to do it. SE Kenny McAlister - McAlister has been the stud of our receiving corps for a long time. He holds all Little Rock Receiving records, and he still has a lot of game in him. He has flourished with Coghill at QB, having 1,000 yards in each of the two seasons where Cog was at the healm. I think we should keep McAlister no matter what happens. We had money tied up in him this season, so we shouldn't see much of an affect on our salary cap by keeping him. RB Jack McAfee - While an adequate sub at times, Richmond has proved to be a far more affective fill-in starter. No point in keeping him.

The decisions with our receiving corps will be central to the future direction of this team. I'd really like to retain McAlister and Morrell both, but financially, that will be tough.
Remember, we have a potential monster salary adding to our defensive line, too - as we have an idolized DT asking for the moon and stars this year. Plus, we having a defensive coordinator saying the defense is in dire shape. Good stuff. |
